      I got spoiled by PC standards for this game and now I absolutely refuse to play it on switch the game deserves to look it's best imo. I almost wanna say they shouldn't have put it on the switch just because it is so ugly at those resolutions and they took out alot of visual effects and the render distance is hit hard but because it makes this amazing game more accessible to more people I'm ok with it. If possible I'd say play it on anything else though lol

      It's not THAT stupid that they don't like Witchers. They have all the reasons in the video, plus whatever stories they've heard. Plus, soldiers are still humans, while Witchers actually ARE freaks, complete with weird eyes and powers. It might be even worse than being born that way, because you were chosen for that path, and can't go back.

    • @DeltathRiylaan
      @DeltathRiylaan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@LouLouLion I guess it depends on what you liked about Breath of the Wild. Exploration isn't as wondrous as Breath of the Wild because you aren't scaling mountains and soaring through the sky and the environment isn't as wildernessy beautiful, but.. the story is insanely deeper/better, the combat is tighter and a little more fun in some ways and the side quests are much, much MUCH more interesting. They almost all have some depth and intrigue storywise to them.
      In terms of setting and story, it feels a lot more murky morally speaking. Geralt isn't a bad guy but he doesn't always do the right thing. The game is also more adult themed, with a larger amount of violence as well as some sexual content. If I recall, it has a story catch up at the beginning for players who haven't played the first two games, though I'd still recommend reading up on some of the bigger plot elements or finding a good summary/video.
      The progression systems are cool, crafting is fun and useful (even necessary), there's also a very in-depth collectible card game that exists in the game's world that most characters play, called Gwent. It's fun and engaging and you can collect cards and build your deck throughout the game. It has even become a standalone game outside of The Witcher 3 because it was so popular.
      It's definitely dark high fantasy closer in theme to The Lord of the Rings, but it does capture some of that massive world wonderment that Breath of the Wild has and it's a great game. It also has some solid voice acting. So if this stuff sounds like something you'd like, it has dozens and dozens, even hundreds of hours of gameplay. It also has 12 dlc packs and 3 expansions bundled with it. Though I haven't played all of those, I've heard they're quite good.

      You haven't talked to too many people then. I personally only know a few guys who have been Witcher fans from the original and they all said that 3 was easily the worst of the three. But I don't say it is so so. I say it is a good solid game. Too much there with obvious love and heart that was poured into it to be considered bad by any means. But when you actually look at the game from a genuine game design perspective it just isn't all that great. It has a poorly designed open world akin to that of the earlier Ubisoft titles and it's actual gameplay and controls were very poor, at least when it first released. And it released in a horrible mess. It was filled with bugs, glitches, and some crashes as well. I still got through all of them though. I had the incentive to finish it because I bought it at full price. I brought it back though after finally completing it. It is a very overrated game that continues to be praised regardless of the many flaws that exist in the game and it is the most awarded game of all time which does not make any sense in the slightest. I prefer instead of games getting such blind praise to be seen for what they are truly worth. That way the developers themselves can hear what needs to be improved. I really just want CD Projekt Red to make the absolute best game they can. For that they need to improve on their actual "game" making skills. Love the developers though. They are a very consumer friendly bunch and we could use some more of that these days.

    Best $60 bucks i spent in a long, _Long_ time
    [ Edit: ] this game is really great on so many levels. The voice acting, the immersion and complexity of everything is insane and amazing.
    There are some things that i noticed while playing this on the Switch, though. The first and worst is that ive actually had the game crash 3 times - twice from an "unknown error", and the last time after trying to mediate and the menu just froze on me- have no idea why. Luckily, you can adjust "auto save" at quicker intervals to make up for lost time if the game crashes.
    The games low resolution was really hard for me to get used to at first. This was especially true coming from a menu, or going from regular game play to a cutscene, as the resolution picks up (which is why the cutscenes sometimes stutter when they play) going from this to regular gameplay was really _really_ jarring, and sometimes i had to squint my eyes playing the game because there lower resolution was like experiencing everything through a beer bottle. You do get used to it, however.
    I also wish combat would be a little more fine tuned. Alot of times i find myself pressing the trigger button to unleash a Witcher Sign - but often find that it doesn't happen. Ive also come across at least two instances where Geralt will go up against a group of enemies, and won't automatically draw his sword , and since combat in this game is so fast and fierce, it took me a while to realize in these instances that he was trying to take on 5 wolves with his fists.
    Aside from these issues, the game is still great! 40 hours in and I'm barely a 1/3rd of the way through... Also , great review!!!

    This will get buried, but I don't care because I haven't seen anyone talk about it. At around 8:00 Arlo talks about the game being split into smaller sections, rather than a "big open world."
    The game is split into three sections, but the first is the tutorial area which you never have to go back to (which is quite small), the third is Skellige, where the last chapters of the game take place, but the second area is a map as large as almost any open world game there is. I can't imagine how you'd be running into the edges of that map at all. It contains marshes, bogs, forests, castles, and a city larger than almost any I can think of in any other game.
    I just felt like that needed clarifying, because he was making it sound like it wasn't an "open world."

      5 sections. White orchard, velen, skillege, kaer moher and toussaint. Although both white orchard and kaer moher are pretty small and empty compared to the other 3.
      You are totally right tho just velen by itself is pretty damn huge. I never even ran into the edge until the after game, when i went looking for it just to see how far i could go.

    @Arlo: I really hope that you see this post and that you take the time to read it. I know that you're basically a committed Nintendo player Arlo, but you should REALLY find the time to play the first Witcher on PC and The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings on X-Box 360. Together, these games form one of the best fantasy gaming trilogies of all time. It's a story line that, when taken as a single work, is VERY hard to top. And it's the gaming franchise that put CD Projekt Red on the map.
    I used to have a deep-held belief that The Elder Scrolls franchise was the premiere fantasy series on the market. And I've loved it for a VERY long time. (I came on board with the series with Morrowind on the X-Box "back in the day" almost 18 years ago.) And the series still holds a very special place in my heart. It always will. But, whereas The Elder Scrolls games feel like a series of stand alone vignettes with the over arching history looming loosely in the background tying the games together to be easily missed out on for anyone not interested enough to read the in-game books or get invested in the lore, The Witcher's world is a persistent front-and-center one that bleeds directly from the books and its one that you as the player are constantly DIRECTLY involved in. As you've noticed, Its politics are intricate, interesting and engrossing. And they're impossible to escape.
    I ADORE The Witcher. It's easily one of my top 20 game (series) of the last 20 years. It's an absolute shame that Andrzej Sapkowski frowns upon video games as a creative medium (he refuses to believe there's any value in stories told through gaming) abhors the games to such an extent that he refuses to play/look into them. Because, if I'm being honest with myself, the story woven by CDPR not only pays a great deal of homage to the source material, it actually SURPASSES the source in a myriad of ways. And it really serves his work well. It's simply writing of a caliber so high that you rarely see see its like on the gaming, movie, TV or novel landscape. Even the game's side-quests, which are usually stand alone fetch quest padding in many lesser games (The Elder Scrolls included), are nearly as involved and memorable as the main quest which they mostly tie into directly. Some even SURPASS the main quest. (The Bloody Baron comes to mind almost immediately.)
    All book properties should be so lucky to have such a jewel of a trilogy based on them.
    Here's to hoping that the new Netflix series (although based more directly on the time frame of books whereas the games are a sequel to them) is as good. Or, that it at least attempts to maintain the high bar set by the games' story telling.
    I'm really glad that the Switch has allowed you to be exposed to this game world. It deserves (and needs) to be played by all high fantasy lovers who haven't given it time before. It's required gaming. Quite literally, a masterwork.
    By-the-way, if you're thinking that all of the Witcher's world is drab, dreary, and kind of samey, then wait until you're a high enough level to go to Toussaint and start investing in your personal vineyard. I'm confident in it enough to say that, to me, it's, hands down, the most beautiful and peaceful game world/environment ever crafted. It's one of the few game worlds that I've actively day dreamed about and wished that I could live in...even with all of the inherent monsters. It's so beautiful and vibrant that it's physically painful.
    And hang in there with the combat Arlo. I didn't get proficient with combat until my second playthrough of the second game and I didn't become REALLY comfortable until halfway through my first playthrough of this one. And it gets more intricate the deeper you go. Preparation is VERY BIG in The Witcher universe and the beastiary is your BEST FRIEND. Once you start learning what classes or species monsters fall into, it's like finding a cheat code. Read books about monster types that you can buy from book stores in game, go to the beastiary afterward, read about their strengths and weaknesses, and utilize the best potions, signs and blade oils for the job. Suddenly you're hitting twice as hard and taking half the damage. It's great! (IGNI ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT WORK ON EVERYTHING AND CAN QUICKLY BECOME A USELESS, AND SOMETIMES DETRIMENTAL CRUTCH. But Quen, if properly leveled, is almost broken it's such a good technique and it WILL save your life.) One of my favorite go-to mele techniques that works wonders in most situations is whirl. If you max out your light strikes, and whirl, you can basically become a literal tornado of death for a few seconds at a time. It's great for crowd control, wearing down enemies' stamina gauges by forcing them to block 50 quick strikes at a time, has a very decent range (especially if combined with certain high level runic weapon writing that becomes available for your weapons through a Blood and Wine sidequest) and...it just looks cool. Also, there comes yet another important sidequest in Blood and Wine where you delve into Witcher creation and through a long lost method, you GREATLY expand on the ability slots and how they effect you in combat. You really can't maximize Geralt's potential on a single run. You do it through New Game+. And once you realize that, at that point, there's even new tiers of weapons and armor with the Grandmaster class...........

    On my Xbox I 100%'d my playthrough on game plus on Deathmarch difficulty and by the time you reach the full level of 100 and if you've spec'd correctly, Geralt is nearly unstoppable (there's nothing like wandering into a bandit camp in Toussaint and it's a boss bandit and you're suddenly taking on 30 lvl 93 bandits and ten attack dogs), especially if you've made all the correct choices throughout the game and qualified to get the best silver sword in the game, Aerondight. My personal favorite Witcher armor set is the Feline armor.
    And now I'm having the glory of doing it all over again on my Switch. Best game series ever, the Witcher series and 3 is like a finely aged wine.

    I feel like your fragmented open world problem is mostly just a bad first impression from how the game starts.
    You start in a smaller open area with edges that are easy to bump into.
    Omce you get out of that area you go to a castle that's its own tiny map. After that you get to go to an enormous open world where you can run seemlessly from town to town and even into the massive city of novigrad without being gated by loading screens or fast travel.
    There are a couple more smaller gated off zones but they're pretty big too and they're all gated for valid reasons.
    You can only fast travel to and from signposts and only once you find them, so a lot of the game is just roaming countryside on your horse finding villages and ruins and caves and small stand alone stories that are often so well written you won't notice they have nothing to do with the main quest.

      That is the least of the open world aspect problems the game has though. The open world design as a whole is pretty mediocre. Why CD Projekt Red went with a more Ubisoft style open world design of all things I will never understand but even they admit they do not know how to make games.

    For your point about splitting up the world, unless something has changed in the switch version it's mostly just tutorial land to introduce you to everything then massive main land more like what you wanted, then massive water area with lots of islands, then new dlcs map, only the tutorial area is small and even then its surprisingly large for what it is.

    As someone who read the books the amount of missed or inaccurate info makes me sweat with the need to start a list. But I wont. Instead I will simply urge anyone who can read, to read The Witcher books. Start with The Last Wish.

    • @godminnette2
      @godminnette2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually as someone who read the books, Arlo got it mostly right. Some of what he said was technically true but definitely missing context, but idk if the game gives him that info. Like Ciri just being a "former ward" or Yen being an "old girlfriend."

    • @ButtslammerBob
      @ButtslammerBob 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@godminnette2 Mostly right, I was just referring to the desire to be nitpicky. Some of it isn't explicitly said in the game but rather clear through subtext, like Ciri being akin to a daughter figure to the Witchers of Kaer Morhen and is much, much more than just "former ward"

    • @OGR-4394

    • @ButtslammerBob
      @ButtslammerBob 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OGR-4394 I wouldn't go that far, nor would I expect people to play Witcher 1 or 2 before or instead of 3. 1 has aged like milk and 2 is largely based on characters not in the books at all. I would however highly urge people to at least read The Last Wish to get a handle on what kind of person Geralt is. And especially the entire book series if one rightfully enjoys the third game.
