I have to disagree on the "no strategizing" argument. On higher difficulties, the battlefield is like a high-octane chessboard. You need to know the location of the enemies, the layout, when to get up close and personal and when to pick up powerups. The management part here comes from your health, which you can only get if you glory kill enemies.
TheLegendOfJoey you are likely completely right, but I'm with Arlo. I'm not masochistic. Lol. Just kidding. If you are bada$$ enough to play that way, I'm sure it requires loads of strategy.
I played the game on Hurt Me Plenty on PC, and even that needed a lot of spatial awareness. You feel like a god when you can successfully kite two Hell knights, some Mancubi and a small army of Imps at the same time.

I barley beat the game on nightmare on PC, I can't imagine it on the switch, or any console, unless they nerfed the enemies on console

Retro Soul it's already been out for a long time, it's a known quantity. Thanks to that, the majority of the work then goes into comparing the two versions, rather than tackling a brand new game.

I bought it already, I have not experienced any frame drops at all. It looks stunning for a hand held, I absolutely love it. Definitely better than PS4 or Xbox One. PC is a different story because of FPS and graphics. But I can not deny playing doom while taking a shit.

Really hope this game sells well. 3rd parties are taking a pretty big risk by siding with Nintendo yet again, but this time they definitely deserve to be rewarded.
Torrie Garvin eh, for $60 it probably won't sell as well as they would like. That's quite an investment for those who already have the game on another platform. 30-40 they would sell at least twice as much.
Amazon prime members can get any new switch game for $47 on pre-order, makes quite a difference :)

I was on the fence about picking this up. I never played it because aside from Bioshock or Resident Evil, I don't play shooters. But Arlo has convinced me to get it. Don't really care about frame rate and all that. I am excited now to try the game.

@Keirnoth - I'm platform-agnostic. I simply would like to have as many 360 and PS3 games ported to the Switch as possible. Are you telling me you have zero interest in a portable version of any games from those systems? Borderlands? BioShock? Diablo III? XCOM? GTA? *shrug*
@toujo4 - Since I doubt the Switch can handle the enhanced Creation Engine used in Fallout 4, I'd at least take a port of Fallout 3 GotY edition. Basically, any game that was available on the 360 or PS3 from 2005 to 2013. There are hundreds of great games for those systems that could have a portable, second life on the Switch.

Same here, I've never cared for FPSes. But I'm getting this for xmas and wolfenstien next year. I'm really happy Bethesda cares about Nintendo. I got Skyrim day one and have been enjoying my first play through of it ever.

Just picked this up tonight Arlo. This is actually the 4th time I’ve watched your review. I wanted to view a 4th time after my purchase to hear your thoughts, and after my first hour into the game. You’re absolutely right. This game is amazing. Going from PS4 to Nintendo Switch exclusively was a change for me. Now I’ve added Doom to my collection, It’s definitely scratching that FPS itch I’ve had for the last year! It’s not pretty, but it’s DOOM, and damn is it satisfying!

Nice review! I love Doom on Switch as well, and have beaten the game twice already, and am gonna keep running it for it’s pure and satisfying gameplay. Just a little thing to add, for those who are looking for a more linear experience than what is offered in the regular campaign, you can never go wrong with arcade mode, seeing as you get all upgrades and weapons present from that level from the get-go, as well as some extra challenge to keep your score and multiplier high. Just a little thing I’d like to add. Over all I’m glad to see you enjoying the game as much as I’d hope most people would.

I got a PS4 just a few weeks ago, but I want to get it on the Switch for the portable aspect, and I'm not even big on portable gaming. It seems like a great game to play in shorter sessions. This is the really great thing about the Switch, even though the multiplats are inferior in terms of performance, the portability is a great selling point unlike with past gimmicks.
Should be fine. The game is split into different levels, not just one big area.
I think this game took a lot of inspiration from the metroid prime series. The up close, fast paced shooting feels quite similar
EDIT : (yes everyone, I know the original doom came out in 1993 long before metroid prime. My bad, I just wrote something quick because I was early.)

For all these people moning about the cost in these coments below, it's only $60 from the Nintendo store. These things are always over priced, the Ps4 is no different this way for new games. By from Amazon and save $20 and best of all have a physical copy of it.
Yes you may get it for $10 second hand on Ps4 but we must support these games on switch and have a lot more verity in the games we get. I'm loving the switch, first Nintendo console since the N64.

Medachod I agree it does look good on the switch I had to turn off movement blur, when you turnaround fast it looked weird. Also have the hidden doom levels gone out of the game? I can't find them.

Also I wonder why Nintendo just doesnt port Wii U and Wii games (that support the controller) to the Switch and upscale the graphics a bit like what the Xbox One X is doing this would give the Switch alot more games without wasting too much money.
This is sadly true but I still dont get why they could not add Wii U and Wii games to the Virtual Console alongside making sequels for them maybe like a buy game A2 and get game A1 with it for free system or release them in bundles for cheap on the Switch.

Great high-octane arcadey shooter with collectibles, but only buy on Switch if it's the only game machine you own (or you prize portability).
I'd say that fits the bill. I know friends getting this on Switch because its one of the most addictive games they played on PC/PS4 and having it be available at any time to them is satisfying in a way that justifies the ticket price.

The dlc is just multiplayer maps modes and demons so if youre on the go its useless. And the game requires like a 20 gig install on a microsd to use that.

Great review Arlo! I'm so happy this is on the switch. It can not be stated enough how important this is for Nintendo, getting some mature badass games makes me so happy to be a Nintendo fan. I love the first party roster of course but games like this makes it a viable choice for more people to buy a switch.

you know Nintendo Consoles with doom Ports was terrible but handheld doom ports were amazing, BEFORE YOU SAY DOOM 64 I MIGHT WANT TO REMIND YOU THAT DOOM 64 IS NOT A PORT IT IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT DOOM GAME, GO PLAY IT FULLY IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME.
Switch really needed this game for it's library. This port isn't perfect, but it's a good handheld FPS. In my opinion only two version matter: Switch and PC. On the first one you get handheld experience. It would be better with gyro and motion control though.
On PC you get solid 60 fps and way better graphics than on PS4 or XO. I think that there's really no reason to get PS4 or XO version. PC is so much better and have quite low requirements. Pentium CPU is enough for solid 60 fps and Geforce 960 or 1050 will deliver 60 fps 1080p on ultra, of course 970 or 1060 would be a bit better for perfect frame pacing, since those GPUs get 80-100 fps with ease.
At the same time I'm angry on Bethesda. I won't buy another copy to just play it on Switch. I've got day one boxed PC release that is on my Steam account. I could pay 5-10$ to get upgrade to Nintendo Switch version, but that's not going to happen.
It's the same with every 3rd party game. I've already have Rayman Legends, L.A. Noire, Doom and many indie titles from Switch library, but I can't play them on Switch, and I won't pay full price again.
In case of incoming games, I won't buy them for Switch, because PC offers me much more. This is the reason why no one is buying 3rd party games for Nintendo consoles. PC, XO or PS4 ports are always better.

Nintendo could have their PC store, like GOG or uPlay. Buy game once, play it on Switch and PC of course if a game already is on PC like Doom. I think we should do something about it, since Nintendo isn't against it. Few years ago when you bought Toki Tori 2 for Wii U you got a Steam key for free. Many games will also have cross multiplayer with Switch/PC/XO.
I want to play on Switch while I'm away from my computer, but when I'm at home I want to play in 60 fps and 4K.

He was being hyperbolic and still, most people only have 1st party games for the switch who have one, so it is not entirely wrong. He is basically saying the turnoff for people buying third party on switch is a superior version on other consoles and sometimes portability isn't worth that sacrifice for a good chunk of players.

you know Arlo,you are the first reviewer ever to convince me to buy a game,i remember everyone playing doom when it came out and i was like eh not my thing,i like you love resident evil for the treasure and exploring and after watching your review and you said treasure and mild exploration i was certain that the combat and the secrets would make a perfect combo. so thank you for turning me on to this wonderful game.
My brother and I were watching Fraggle Rock and we just saw the episode in which Boober shouts "DOOM!" like you have in the beginning of this video. It blew our minds.
It pisses me off that you never mentioned how good the music in the game was. All you seem to have been concerned with the game was just gameplay and plot. And I do not know if you've ever played the original Doom for PC or any of the other installments, though by the looks of the review I find it unlikely.
The music is mostly bass and drums at times, though it gets pretty damn good near the end.
Are you kidding me, Mick Gordon spent months figuring out his analogue synthesizer setup just to get the sound of this game to make this score, and the end result sounds very unique and distinctly DOOM. I highly suggest you watching his talk at GDC about writing Doom music.
I mean, I'm glad that this is a great port & I hope it does well, but no gyro controls & the game running at 30fps are kind of deal-breakers for me.
Agreed. I wouldn't play this on console. But for everyone who wants it on Switch, glad the port works well!

Neoxon gyro controls are terrible on fps tho
I think it does have gyro controls now, as in the options menu there is a option to turn motion controls on or off. I saw it on a video on obe1plays channel.
Doom allowing the player to actually move, as if you're a video game character and not a real person with real limitations that make everything much less fun, is what makes it and a ton of older shooters much more fun than just about any modern FPS games.
I see another fiend of the same opinion as I. Person of culture you are my friend. If only more games prioritised fun over realism like Doom.

toujo4 I don't recall anybody saying that. I remember hearing lots of Nintendo fans saying it looked really good when it first released, as it wasn't some by-the-numbers shooter, but rather a fun, fast-paced, retro-style shooter.
