I am a fairly new car camper. I usually just need to stay a night on the way to visit my son in Florida. I have stayed in four different rest areas in four different states. They all had safe lighting and 24-hour restrooms. A couple of them had security on duty. There is noise but not mayhem. I have been very pleased so far.
Most states don't allow overnight parking in rest areas. Connecticut does, and I've used a couple to spend some days in New York City, though I park at a pay lot during the day. I've slept many nights in Maine rest areas where they technically don't allow it, but I've never had a problem.
In the south, Try Cracker Barrel. They are all along the highway and give great breakfast before getting on the road in the morning. They have spots designated for RVs
I've had good experiences at overnight rest areas except in Florida. Florida has a 3rd party security firm of old men that open carry firearms. They take pictures of your rig along with your license plates
From a truck driver, thank you. It is so hard to work 14 hours a day and trying to get enough sleep. It's so hard at night to get parking. Even if there's several spots open there's 20 warehouses down the road kicking drivers out after they unload. them. Your so tired, and know your clocks about out and you can legally be in trouble, then you have to back in the tinniest spot with the biggest truck. It's difficult. They don't give us any breaks.
Several years ago was the last time I stopped at a Wal-Mart. My dog woke me up in the middle of the night, someone was trying to open my outside hatches. Big shock, I had already swapped out all the locks for Abus, there was no way they were getting in. I highly recommend swapping out the standard locks everyone has a key to for a quality lock. Abus and Medeco would be my top picks. Doc
Cracker Barrel is our favorite place to stay. We traveled round trip Gila Bend to Raleigh, NC and back. We spent a total of $2.50! That was our fee at a National Forest. Pretty proud of that! We were traveling in a Casita. We made No reservation…and didn’t have to buy into any apps or memberships. If we can do it so can you!
Robin, you are one amazing woman. From day one that I began watching your channel, you have provided top notched information for the traveling community. And, you are very trustworthy. I appreciate you and hope you have a wonderful, restful, fun, holiday season!! ♥️🙏🏼♥️
I stayed at a Walmart for two weeks once. I burned out the transmission in my truck and it took some time to get it repaired. The Walmart employee told me to be quiet and I would have no problems. It was great.
That Sounds Good & ProbabLy Gonna Get More UnusuaL as Time Goes By, Where Not in Kansas Anymore, Those Lucky RuraL PLaces HopefulLy i' Be Doing Some TraveLs in 2--Years, Peace
Not all Walmarts are creepy. I know someone who was homeless for a time in his car. Truckers paid him to watch out for their rigs, employees bought him food. He was safe there for weeks.
Lived in the cab of my Ford Ranger for 2 years, in a WalMart parking lot in Alabama. They hired local law enforcement to stay on site most nights. The one or two homeless junkies that would stop by my truck to visit, would always ask permission, and thank me for speaking with them, rather than ignoring them. With local state park campgrounds charging $30+ per night, it always amazed me that people in nice RVs would stay for 1 or more nights, then drive away, leaving bags of trash where they had parked, in a lot with 8 or 10 trash cans they could have used.
FYI IF YOU ARE GONNA TRAVEL IN MN: Walmart... there aren't any Walmarts that allow you to park overnight... mostly bcz of locals ordinances. Managers have said, "OK with us, but you take the risk with law enforcement." Also, there is only 1 Cracker Barrel in the state, below Mpls, and they still allow overnights. Rely on rest areas in this state.
I read Sam Walton's (founder of Walmart) autobiography years ago, and he talked about how after they first started Walmart, they used to ride around in his RV scouting out spots for new Walmart stores. They would often get kicked out of empty parking lots when they stopped for the night and it made him really mad. So that is the source of the original policy allowing RVs overnight at Walmart. Of course, as you mentioned, new local ordinances that put a crimp on that more recently.
It's because they've had to put a crimp on it. The drug addicts abuse all of these privileges and ruin it for everyone. Heck, I work with the homeless in a local shelter and safe parking area and it is *always* the drug addicts that cause problems and get thrown out. The people who are truly homeless because of a series of tragic or traumatic events or health issues are rarely, if ever, a problem. The addicts are the worst, most selfish, morally bankrupt people.
Sometimes, it's local RV parks that lobby local government to stop Walmart overnight parking. They get mad seeing ppl stay there for free and want them as customers. I lived near one in NC where this happened.
Walmart was sued when an overnighter decided to fire up his hotplate out of the back of his van which ignited a car parked next to his van and a child who was sleeping in that car did not survive the fire. It was all blamed on Walmart's overnight parking for RVs.
I think a lot of people ended up at Walmart because it didn't cost anything for an easy, quick overnight. Most of the alternatives mentioned must be paid yearly🤷♀️. I’ve subscribed and loved your channel for years. I understand that you have to pay the bills but the many Harvest Host plugs are a little much.
Mrsjohnson1743 I agree. I was excited about this video until I found out minivans weren't accepted at all the Harvest Host properties etc al. I would think Robin would have mentioned this. Bummer.
I was disappointed to learn our closest Walmart has posted a sign saying “No overnight parking”. I don’t blame them because I know there is heavy drug activity nearby, and violence often breaks out. It is safer to not stay there.
It’s the city/county not allowing “camping” in parking lots. Walmarts don’t care, it’s the city/county and citizens. Trying to push out homeless and drug traffickers. Happens anyway.
@@Henle15 - Many Walmarts do care as they lose customers who don’t want to park in a lot infested with dilapidated RVs and sketchy folks wandering around.
She's just doing a commercial for Harvest Host (et al) referral fees without being explicit about why she's doing it. Pretty much every video lately is sponsor-driven and laced with a healthy dose of fearmongering. Just trying to exploit TH-cam algorithms. Robin is unfortunately no longer a reliable option for useful information. Just watch her for entertainment at this point. I'm someone who easily travels way more than Robin and have for a decade. I've traversed the country back and forth 4 times the past 6 weeks. I've stayed in Walmart parking lots literally every night - a new location each night. Always called ahead. Only 1 (one!) wouldn't permit overnight parking. Sure, Walmart locations are slightly disappearing due to NIMBY ordinances and other issues but it's nowhere near as severe as suggested in this clickbait video.
@@SilverSergeant , I don't want to freeload off of Wal-Mart. I shop for everything I need at the Walmarts I have stayed at. In a particularly bad storm in Montana, all types of Rvs and many, many semi trucks parked in a Walmart parking lot. Their hospitality was generous, and it was a huge relief to get off the road.
When I'm in town or overlanding, I use Cracker Barrels frequently. I make sure to have a nice, hardy breakfast in the morning before I head out. Just ask the Manager when you pull in if it's okay with them and where they want you to park. Doc
Thank you, Robin for this helpful and informative video. I don’t know if there are Cracker Barrel Restaurants where you travel, but they are awesome! Nearly all of them have special areas in the back for overnight RVers. They are my number 1 option in Addition to some of the ones you mention. Happy travels!
I have looked into Harvest Hosts, but have decided against it. As someone else mentioned, the vehicle has to be self contained and have some sort of holding tanks. I'm planning on being in likely a Class C, so that's not an issue. For me, paying for the membership, then expected to spend a minimum of $30 to stay. I have heard stories of places giving bad reviews for campers because they didn't spend enough. Well, if it's a place that doesn't have things to purchase that I would use, I wouldn't spend $30 there. I don't drink, so wineries are out, and I'm mobility impaired, so some museums or similar places aren't always handicap accessible. By the time you figure in time, costs, and extra travel, it would be no different than staying in (some) RV parks, and at least there you can have hook-ups. The more I hear about Harvest Hosts from people who aren't sponsored by them, the worse it sounds. Same with Thousand Trails.
Choose your harvest host. You’re supporting a small business when you stop at them. Tea growing in Mississippi, olive oil farm in Texas, sheep milk and cheese in Montana and on and on. Harvest Host is for us an occasional pleasure in a bunch of different ways to see America. And I don’t even have a TH-cam channel…
FYI, Harvest Host and its affiliates require that guests travel in self-contained RVs. Types of RVs include motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, fifth-wheel trailers, popup campers and truck campers, so long as they are self-contained. However, NO tents, minivans, cars, or pick-up trucks will be allowed to join as guests. Important: All camping vehicles must be fully self-contained. Your RV must have an interior toilet and built-in holding tanks or bladders for waste water. Porta-potties that remain inside the vehicle at all times are acceptable, but must be dumped off-site at an appropriate facility. The dumping of gray water on Host properties is prohibited. So, even if you are self-contained in your minivan or car, you are not allowed to participate.
I was so disappointed in this. Then my plans for National Parks. They’ve same policy so no working there. I could stay in a dorm. But I’m 61 & have never shared a room with anyone I can’t kick to the couch when they’re annoying 😉
I was at a walmart and woke up to blue flashing lights... cops were making an arrest right outside my window! Dinner AND a show! I love walmart, i feel safe, it's free, and everything I want to shop for is right there. The nearby rest area is sketchy and I wouldn't stay there.
Could you make a video about safety precautions for camper trailers. Such as do you use a wheel lock on the camper when parked overnight or when you leave camp in the day?
Thank you for saying to not take truck parking spots in truck stops. As a trucker, it is hard enough to find parking. We operate under federal laws that dictate how long we can drive, so when we look for parking, it is NOT an option. It is very annoying at best to see an RV in a spot I or another truck driver need. RVs have SO MANY OTHER OPTIONS for parking. Do not take the few spaces trucks have. Honestly, I wish you had not mentioned Trucker Path.
I'm not a trucker, and even I cringed in horror when she said that. I can't believe *anyone* would recommend that unless they're paying her to promote their app? Even then, I have a conscience...and empathy for others...and no amount of money will sway my moral compass (not even millions and I already know this from turning it down in real life). I would never recommend anyone take an open spot because truckers drive at all hours and may need that open spot at any moment. smh If RVers get desperate they can go park in the corner of some huge vacant hotel parking lot.
Make sure to vote down the video so she will get the message and so the video doesn't get widely promoted. Sad that we have to do that, but if she wants to be unethical we have to show her being unethical isn't ok.
I stay at truck stops only if they have auto only areas where I can park my van. Some have overflow truck parking even in the front "car" areas so I move on somewhere else then.
If I have to stop because it would be dangerous to keep going, I love finding a well lit truck stop, I NEVER take up a truck's parking spot though. I park somewhere in a little car spot but feel safer knowing there are other people around because by that point I'm exhausted. Respecting your parking spots is the least we can do for that feeling of security!
Yeah. If I deem someone to be unethical, I have permission to be unethical, too. Sad, that we have to clarify that on today's world. If Trucker Path isn't a private group then it would appear that you care a lot more than they care.
I used to watch many RV and van-living YT channels...since about 2 years ago, I only watch Robyn (besides CheapRVliving, of course)...and this is why. Valuable information and she's the nicest person. Doesn't matter but she also has tried on several different hair styles/cuts...she looks gorgeous in the current one, IMHO. Thanks, Robyn!
My daughter went from Delaware , across the top of the country, to Port Townsend Washington last October, and stayed at some of the most amazing Harvest Host location's. The most memorable was a horse farm in Montana. The owner brought her up to the ranch house and cooked up a big Cowboy steak dinner. Lavender and Alpaca farms. Winery and brew pub's. She hangs out with the KIFT group on the West Coast. Thank you for explaining this to newbies!
Im not a fan of HH because 1) it's a paid service even if you dont pay the direct business so not interested in always having to take the time to shop or patronize the business on a quick overnight stop. And 2) most HH are not convenient to our travels. BW also not interested mainly due to locations and safety - Truck stops are out for us but state rest stops are for all travelers. If it doesn't say JUST TRUCKERS, there are RV designated spots at most. No guilt here but those are rare circumstances for us. We plan trips with stops and destinations in mind. Boondocking is great with a group.
Hola from Guaymas Mexico, Byrdie. I appreciate your resources and the time you invest researching great alternatives and options to enjoy RV nomading to the fullest. I particularly like your wrap-up summary and graphic. On my 'home' to my Mexican house I enjoyed Harvest Hosts with fabulous success. The hosts were all accommodating and welcoming. As a golfer I appreciate the add-on for golfers. Happy Sunday. ⛳
Thank you! I’m over Walmart also and Cracker Barrel in some states are becoming the same. HH is great. And Letchworth is beautiful also with Watkins Glen. Thanks for posting Solo Streaming Sister!!
I'm laughing at myself. I MISread your name as "big hair trolling" and I looked at your comment and thought, "That's not a troll comment, that's a supportive comment". Then I looked at your photo and thought, "Her hair isn't big." Then I re-read your name. lol Might be time for a visit to the optometrist. lol
Oh Robin, I’m so sorry to hear about The Boy! Im so sorry for your loss. You gave him a wonderful life traveling with you. I’ll miss seeing him in your videos. ❤
Sprinter Van camper here…. Personally, I love stopping for dinner somewhere gorgeous. I do my evening stuff there. Then I drive to a rest area to sleep. Get up, drive somewhere gorgeous, have my coffee, clean up the van for the day and head to that day’s adventure. I feel pretty stealthy doing it that way. ❤️ loving your channel, Robin. See you out there!
It’s amazing anyone leaves their house with all the danger driven fear being put out there. My 4 daughters and I traveled 3 years full time in an RV and never had an issue. I’m a single mom and have been traveling all over by myself and with my kids for 2 decades and have no plans of stopping. I also save the rest stops for our semis.
@@FORKandFIFTIES Lmmfao I’ve owned 2 houses. The last was a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom 2 car garage with a nice yard in one of our states better school districts. Your American dream of being a slave to the rat race life is definitely not everyones. I have no interest in spending my entire life stuck in the same place everyday. I’m not a prisoner. I prefer living a free life that fits my free soul. Also, keep in mind my rv was bigger than most 2 bedroom apartments in many cities and those folks are stuck with crappy neighbors. Should you then question folks living locked up in tiny apartments and no yard? My dogs have seen more of this amazing planet than most people ever will. It’s clear, you’re judging and not asking a question. Don’t be mad and bitter that some of us have the guts to go for our dreams while others choose to sit in traffic living a groundhogs day existence just to pay bills.
@@debrat.9105 Online school or homeschool. There are tons of programs out there. Workamping is a great way to earn money while moving around, and it’s fun. In those two decades, we didn’t travel full time the entire time. We only traveled full time in an RV for 3 years. I plan on hitting the road again in May, if all goes well. Being disabled can make things challenging and can throw off timing.
@@mommasonthemove9144I think it sounds like a fun and adventure. The RV is yours. Hotels can be ick. You can have your special creature comforts and pets in your RV. The bonuses of traveling in an RV Are long to me. I think it’s a blessings and bonus to spend time with your children. Sounds awesome to me.
Thanks Robin. I'm taking notes! It's going to be a while before we can get back on the road, but we'll be more prepared thanks to this information you've shared.
It's a win win when discreet RV'ers stay overnight at WalMart all the way in the back where there are very few vehicles parked. But don't take up more than one spot unless your vehicle does not fit in standard parking space. Also, don't leave any trace when you leave. Lastly, give some business for WalMart so that it makes everyone happy. But, there are few that always spoils it for everyone. WalMart is very gracious to allow overnight stay for travelers. Please reciprocate that favor.
Give Walmart a break! They've been very generous about parking for ages and if the could wave a magic wand to get rid of all the problems, they would. They don't want the skells and felons either.
She's talking about the people creating encampments of cars and inoperable RVs taking advantage of the overnight parking, leaving waste, committing crimes, and making the parking lot unsafe and inhospitable to patrons of their business.
Hey Robin, I went to the camp scan site and they only offer 15% discount where did you say to get the 30% discount thank you for your videos. Enjoy every week.
We love Harvest Host and Boondockers Welcome but Robin...you need to explore the Vanlife. Our 19 foot self contained van can pretty much park anywhere. No RV markings. Makes travel so easy.
I think she started in a van. She has a video about the different rigs she's lived in and why or why not they did/didn't work for her. Check it out! 😊❤
I have never ever stayed in a Walmart and do not wish too. As you mentioned, there were a lot of broken down RVs and I have seen people defecating outside. I live on the central coast and they do not allow overnight in the parking lots here. Signs are posted. My favorite places are outside of nice hotels on the street side or on the street in front of rows and rows of nice condos.
You can’t simply say all WalMart parking lots have these issues and are dangerous. You just have to use common sense and be ware of where you are. Walmart in Yuma foothills is not like a Walmart in LA or Chicago.
Wal Mart lots are for full time residence living; there are people that have lived there for years. You can buy drugs and sex, and steal food and booze without leaving. Panhandling shoppers provides income for recreation. Residents don't like 'overnighters' TIP: Always park upwind of full time residents. They are easily identified because they often don't have wheels, tires or axles. Sometimes they don't have doors or windows either. After a year or three the odor [no sanitation, water, or power] is quite pungent and the swarms of bottleneck flies can be annoying. So to quote Sam Walton "Come for a night, stay for a life." It's THE way to live in South Florida, especially if you are broke and wasted and can't afford to pay $2500/mo for rent. A Miami Native--71 years.
@@kentuckylucky5762 Yes, I should say truck spots. But I've seen this situation growing with class A motorhomes and 5th wheel trailers taking truck spots and then when a truck can't find proper parking, they usually park on ramps hiway shoulders and places that are not allowed and end up getting ticketed. This goes much deeper, but I will keep it short for this platform.
@@truckerron i know it is getting very difficult for truckers to find safe parking places.. States and the feds need to offer more safe parking lots for truckers along the interstates and state routes.
Those of us that fit in a standard car parking spot are not taking up truck parking spots. Robin also said if there is a shortage of spots don't take a parking place from OTR truckers. As a group OTR truckers are not as professional or competent as the used to be. Safe travels.
Guys, I want to add, I'm going Blind & I really need your help to get my land ready for Nomads!! I'll take the car campers, minivans & homemade truck campers, but I need to build a solid waste composting station in the back of my property!! I can haul water from Prescott AZ & my land is near the Prescott National Forest, so it's a perfect place in Central Arizona to camp for those who have no other place to stay!! HELP PLEASE!! PLEASE STOP WITH THE 👍 THUMBS-UP's, I really do need HELP, NOT WISHFUL THINKERS!!!
I saw someone trying to "camp" at a local Target store in a shabby looking RV. Needless to say, they weren't there long. That Target is next to the highway exits where panhandlers stand all day. Not all of them are truly homeless, they just make more there than having a job.
God bless Walmart! Their (past and sometimes ongong) kindness to wandering and sometimes seriously needy folk is the main reason i shop there to this day-- and i spend a LOT of money via Walmart
The incorporated areas in my county have ordinances prohibiting overnight camping at walmart. There was just too much crime and "permanent" campers in their parking lots. I don't shop at the walmart near me in the county because of this. It isn't the nomads, it's the tweakers like in your photos living there. 😢
Walmart was just trying to be kind for just over night sleeping. But people ruin it with staying for a week, putting out their slides it is sad. Cause you can not stay over night in rest areas either anymore.
boy racers, tweakers and "Squatters" are the problem. Most Walmarts in many States and in Canada don't have a problem with true overnighters, the ones located on the outskirts of the cities have fewer problems than the ones right in the city and the spots where the climate for year round living is easy. You don't have too many squatters at Walmarts on the highway where it's -22 and snow removal is in progress! Yes, city ordinances also apply, not just for Walmarts it's good to know before you go.
Only at a few locations. They are Not going to do this everywhere. Love's is mostly built around the needs of truck drivers. But regardless, I don't care for how Love's is changing and I as a trucker usually patronize Pilot/Flying J's or TA/Petro's.. They seem to care more about truck drivers.
Trucker Path came with me from my trucking days. Probably why it's my first choice when I have to get somewhere via interstates. When I'm wondering it's more stealth mode stuff in my van. I often use your tip about those streets between apartments and light industrial/office sites.
A former trucker myself 🫡 Long story- short, was struck by lightning, died & saved by my manager, spent a year in the hospital & am still recuperating… miss the traveling! Looking forward to it upon retirement. And YES! TruckerPath~ is GREAT!!! God Bless 🙏🏻
I’ve heard RV TH-camrs say your chances of hearing a “yes” at Walmart are greater in person vs calling on the phone. I’m guessing they prefer giving you the once over to make sure you aren’t parking a dilapidated rig on their property?
True. My WM experiences are few, but I’ve not been refused. I went in, did some shopping and after checking out, approached the manager with my cart for permission.
In 2019 I went on a 4 month RV trip around USA. I called several different Walmart’s to ask permission to spend the night. Everyone I called said “we just had a meeting and Parking overnight is not allowed anymore”.
I never ask permission at Walmart, better ask for forgiveness than permission. In the large cities of California, forget it. They have security, other than that I haven't had any problems at Walmarts across the country
Great vlog Robin. I've read some of the jelly comments just for entertainment. Even if you use HH or BW occasionally, we have found it to be invaluable. You just need that one time and that has been our experience. Your gut will tell you when to not stop or to not stay. During an incredible heat wave we had to cancel a BW overnight & opt for a night at Loves RV Stop. It was worth the $$ for our air conditioner, but the only time we had to cancel HH or BW.
Hi, Robin! Just wanted to tell you that I have learned so much from your videos. As a matter of fact, I bought an OGO and other things because of you. I love harvest Hosts, but I don’t have the nerve to try Boondockers welcome since I don’t really like talking to people. LOL. I love your hair, by the way. I’m trying to get up the nerve to cut mine.
Robyn thank you so much for all you do! I am soaking up as much as I can. I so am looking forward to my freedom days. I hope to be on the road in just over a year.
Never had a problem parking tho we are pretty stealth. We follow arrive late leave early. I thought you could park at Walmart for 8 hours before you had to leave. We would absolutely leave if told but haven’t had to so far. Once when in Colorado there was absolutely no place to park it was dark and we were exhausted we parked at a hospital. Talk about freaked out our son who was following us on his find my app started texting us very worried we were at a hospital!! We have been members of HH and rarely use them cause hosts don’t get back to you.
You slipped in a mention of Bass Pro Shops and Cabella's. Do they allow RV parking? I did not know that. Great video. I saved the link. I plan on retiring next year, buy a small RV and travel with my dog. I love your channel and found it just before I drive 8000 miles with my pup last month on a two week vacation. I decided traveling in a small sedan is not practical lol. Keep going! I love your enthusiasm and sunny outlook.
Im living this nightmare right now! I'm headed north on 65 from Kentucky into Indiana my phone kept alerting TOLL as I crossed into Indiana. I didnt see any toll both. I stopped at the first rest area, and spoke with the lady attendant who told me, your going to get the bill in the mail. And if you ignore it, your driver's license will be locked up till the toll is paid in full. This is crap, i didnt see any signage alerting to TOLL AHEAD. Now i have to baby sit my P.O. BOX. Its just the nerve of it all!!!!! Avoid SR 65 Indiana/Kentucky line area!!!! I remember that lady saying, they have your license plate!!! Im full-time in my class c. Arms crossed, tapping foot, waiting patiently !!!
As a truck driver, I used to hear other truckers complain about RVers taking up parking spots in truck stops. As I heard one trucker say on the CB, “They don’t let truckers stay at campgrounds, why should they let RVers stay at truck stops.” For the past seven plus years, I’ve been on my trucking company’s Walmart dedicated account. I deliver to Walmart and Sam’s Clubs in Minnesota and the surrounding states. Most of the rural Walmarts let trucks and RVs park overnight. Some of the ones around the Twin Cities can be more challenging. Sioux Falls is not friendly for overnight parking. Mostly because of city law. Trucker Path is a good app. I use the free version. But I rarely use it, unless I have to travel outside of my operating area.
Harvest Host doesn’t allow anything that isn’t self contained with a black/grey tank. That knocks out a lot of travelers. Also, l don’t want to have to talk to or buy from anyone. I just want to pull in somewhere and sleep and then leave in the morning. I personally recommend Hip Camp or a rest area. Other good options are church parking lots.
HH has changed their policy & now accept minivan campers under certain conditions. If u email HH, they will tell u minivans with water, with containers for gray water, and a portapotty are now accepted. They are in the process of updating their online info to state so.
I-overlander is 100% free, and is updated by other RVers. It includes Walmarts, rest areas, some truck stops and many OTHER sites. No annual or any other fees.
I remember when i was on my first long haul road trip by myself. I had to stop and sleep in Albuquerque. I heard Walmart was a good place to stay the night but when i got there it was too sketchy for me. I tried a truck stop inside the city, but the attendant warned me against it since even he didn't trust it. I ended up sleeping at a truck stop outside the city which was really nice the people were friendly and i felt safe sleeping in my car.
Hey from Colorado! I travel part time/car camp mostly Boondocking. I have property/flower farm and going to check out possibly being a host. Thanks for all the information Robin!
Harvest host is $70 on sale and you have to spend gas to find another...... and whatever you purchase at the harvest host location. At $1,000 a month total income, not happening.
It's about time. Had a job driving a street sweeper, a few Wal Marts were on my route. Overnight RVer's blocked multiple rows of parking spaces, would get out of the RV and yell if I got too close/made too much noise, left a mess behind (urine bottles, feces, garbage).
Squatters in RV's have ruined it for Vanlifer's for staying at Cultmart. You can't move in and stay there 24/7 setting up all around outside your vehicle, which they were doing.
I stay overnight at the Walmart in Cedar city Utah. Very nice and quiet area. Lots of food options walking distance. I called first for approval of course.
I have had NO problem with a Cracker Barrel & I love their food too! Had to stay one night at a True Value Store but you have to be gone by 7am!! I'm trying to work it out to open my land for Nomads too!! Sure could use some help, being an Old Blind Guy!! It will have to be a NO SMOKING Retreat because of the dry conditions here and no water, yet!! Please STOP WITH THE 👍 THUMBS UP'ers!! I need HELP, NOT WISHFUL THINKERS!!!
Well I looked it up and got my answer: PROHIBITED: Tents, such as ground tents or car rooftop tents; sleeping in cars, trucks, or minivans; overlanding in jeeps, bikes, or atvs. SO I will NOT be joining, bummer.
We just had a shooting at a Walmart in Spokane, an officer had to shoot someone, they evacuated the store. The police and fire dept were there. I guess this has been happening all over America. So sad, whats wrong with people?
Been following since day one. ❤❤❤still love your videos 😊❤❤. Love the info. If its out there you have it and I know you will always share it. Happy Trails. 😊
The Walmart in Deerpark, PA will not allow overnighters due to there being a campground a mile up and down the road. Town ordinance 😮 rules. Thing is I believe those campgrounds are seasonal
The one issue I’ve had with Harvest Hosts is that I simply can’t predict the timing of my arrival. Given most hosts no longer permit same day reservation, I’ve struggled to actually find hosts that will permit me to stay. I have really loved the host locations I’ve visited, but that was when more of them permitted same day reservations. Something I’ve noticed is that where there’s a Walmart, there’s almost always a CrackerBarrel, and for whatever reason, even if the Walmart wont permit overnights, the CB does. Hmmmm? I do still stay in some Walmarts, but truck stops are excellent for overnights, but I totally agree and consider that truckers get priority.
@kathryncainmadsen5850 Also in Colorado
I've had good experiences at overnight rest areas except in Florida. Florida has a 3rd party security firm of old men that open carry firearms. They take pictures of your rig along with your license plates
Sounds like California. You can overnight in your car at gorgeous rest stops.
Thank you for your service.
Doc
I was gonna ask. Discovered generic keys in late 90’s!
Did you just use Cracker Barrel for overnight stays???

Robin, you are one amazing woman. From day one that I began watching your channel, you have provided top notched information for the traveling community. And, you are very trustworthy. I appreciate you and hope you have a wonderful, restful, fun, holiday season!! ♥️🙏🏼♥️
I stayed at a Walmart for two weeks once. I burned out the transmission in my truck and it took some time to get it repaired. The Walmart employee told me to be quiet and I would have no problems. It was great.
Sounds like you were quiet, respectful of their property, and didn't cause them any problems? Wouldn't it be nice if everyone did that...
Our Walmart allowed you to stay for one night at a time . Now you can leave and come back . Our Walmart is Rural and is safe .
I don’t even want to shop at Walmart in the daytime 😂
Lived in the cab of my Ford Ranger for 2 years, in a WalMart parking lot in Alabama. They hired local law enforcement to stay on site most nights. The one or two homeless junkies that would stop by my truck to visit, would always ask permission, and thank me for speaking with them, rather than ignoring them. With local state park campgrounds charging $30+ per night, it always amazed me that people in nice RVs would stay for 1 or more nights, then drive away, leaving bags of trash where they had parked, in a lot with 8 or 10 trash cans they could have used.
The reason why they are not allowing it in many places.
The reason why they are not allowing it in many places.
FYI IF YOU ARE GONNA TRAVEL IN MN:
Walmart... there aren't any Walmarts that allow you to park overnight... mostly bcz of locals ordinances. Managers have said, "OK with us, but you take the risk with law enforcement."
Also, there is only 1 Cracker Barrel in the state, below Mpls, and they still allow overnights.
I am retired from WALMART . I was truck driver for over 27 years ,and some trouble in Miami ,but that's about it.
Oh goody so government saving us again
Bummer.
I unsubscribed
I was disappointed to learn our closest Walmart has posted a sign saying “No overnight parking”. I don’t blame them because I know there is heavy drug activity nearby, and violence often breaks out. It is safer to not stay there.
Knowing a close friend who is a Walmart manager. I agree with the statement above as she has reported drug activity taking place in the parking lots.
It's a shame that people can't behave themselves. They ruin it for everybody. ☹
I'm confused. The substitutes for Walmart are all paid subscriptions. Hundreds of dollars is no substitute for free.
Right 🤔🤨
She's just doing a commercial for Harvest Host (et al) referral fees without being explicit about why she's doing it.
Don't expect to freeload off Walmart.
Doc
All really good suggestions and information, with your usual thoroughness! Best wishes.🙋🏻♀️
After a trip to Long Island in August……I sold my campervan
83 yr old but still enjoy watching your videos…..
She must not be sponsored or have some sort of deal with them. Cracker Barrel is well known
Same with Thousand Trails.
exactly- i don't like the hard sell that comes with the HH spot.
Thank you for the info. You answered a couple of my questions.
yep this was just a thinly-veiled ad for harvest host. shameful.
Props to Creativity RV for leaving these comments up!
Take only pictures....leave only footprints.
I think this is so unfortunate for all those who are self contained in their minivans! I do wish they would change that policy.
Interesting. Where would a self-contained, 5 window, Skoolie fall in this guidelines?
I was so disappointed in this. Then my plans for National Parks. They’ve same policy so no working there. I could stay in a dorm. But I’m 61 & have never shared a room with anyone I can’t kick to the couch when they’re annoying 😉
So many van lifers have really nice set ups and bathrooms
Super bummer
Must be an aesthetic thing
They don’t want that look around their properties
I would never recommend anyone take an open spot because truckers drive at all hours and may need that open spot at any moment. smh
If RVers get desperate they can go park in the corner of some huge vacant hotel parking lot.
CASINOS! Most have security and are welcoming. Plus a reasonable priced breakfast!
BW also not interested mainly due to locations and safety -
Truck stops are out for us but state rest stops are for all travelers. If it doesn't say JUST TRUCKERS, there are RV designated spots at most. No guilt here but those are rare circumstances for us. We plan trips with stops and destinations in mind.

Campervan is the way to go. Wherever I can park overnight, I can camp. If they knock on my door, I can leave within one minute.
Give Walmart a break! They've been very generous about parking for ages and if the could wave a magic wand to get rid of all the problems, they would. They don't want the skells and felons either.
I think she's saying that - it isn't Walmart but the skanky people taking advantage of the hospitality.

We would still stay at Walmart if manager and ordinance allow. If it doesn’t feel safe, we would leave.
Hi Robin! Another place is Cracker Barrels. Some of these do not include mini vans, cars or suvs. Happy and safe travels!
Residents don't like 'overnighters'
TIP: Always park upwind of full time residents.

The problem with harvest host is they are extremely limited towards full size RVs.

@@truckerron Yeah, truck stops or travel centers need to force these rvers to park in the normal areas because trucks are important, rvs are not.

Happy Sunday, Robin! Thanks for the video.
Walmart was just trying to be kind for just over night sleeping. But people ruin it with staying for a week, putting out their slides it is sad. Cause you can not stay over night in rest areas either anymore.
boy racers, tweakers and "Squatters" are the problem.
Most Walmarts in many States and in Canada don't have a problem with true overnighters,
the ones located on the outskirts of the cities have fewer problems than the ones right in the city
and the spots where the climate for year round living is easy.
You don't have too many squatters at Walmarts on the highway where it's -22 and snow removal is in progress!
Yes, city ordinances also apply, not just for Walmarts it's good to know before you go.
Love Truck Stops are building RV parks next to their truck stops
Only at a few locations. They are Not going to do this everywhere. Love's is mostly built around the needs of truck drivers. But regardless, I don't care for how Love's is changing and I as a trucker usually patronize Pilot/Flying J's or TA/Petro's.. They seem to care more about truck drivers.
Yes. And they're adding locations at a good pace. Several have spaces in the regular parking lot for small RVs and TTs to overnight w/o hookups.
Trucker Path came with me from my trucking days. Probably why it's my first choice when I have to get somewhere via interstates. When I'm wondering it's more stealth mode stuff in my van. I often use your tip about those streets between apartments and light industrial/office sites.

Makes sense.
Or maybe that you're not an addict with teeth missing who is going to cause problems on a meth binge?
I stayed in a Walmart parking lot near San Diego in May of this year. They had security driving the lot and everything.
Yep That Sounds about Time Of AlL The Shutdowns, The FaceCoverEra? , i' Wonder What's Next.
I live in a town where there are 2 Walmarts. One allows overnight RV’ers the other does not. I think it depends where the Walmart is located.
Its just the nerve of it all!!!!!
Avoid SR 65 Indiana/Kentucky line area!!!!
I remember that lady saying, they have your license plate!!! Im full-time in my class c.

As a truck driver, I used to hear other truckers complain about RVers taking up parking spots in truck stops. As I heard one trucker say on the CB, “They don’t let truckers stay at campgrounds, why should they let RVers stay at truck stops.”
For the past seven plus years, I’ve been on my trucking company’s Walmart dedicated account.
Please dont forget about spending the night at Crackle Barrel. Then in the morning have a very hearty breakfast then cast off!!!
Great stuff!!! This will help SO much on my next trip in March.
Thank you!! Great information every time.
thank you so much, I am still in my apt work on it, I live in the great NW if you ever get up here
Thank you so much Robin. I was able to use your discount when signing up for Harvest Hosts. Much appreciated.💚
Love's are great to stay at. No charge in Tonopah, NV at this time.
Thank you for all the information in today’s video.
Hey from Colorado! I travel part time/car camp mostly Boondocking. I have property/flower farm and going to check out possibly being a host. Thanks for all the information Robin!
We had to stop that because someone dumped their tanks in the lot. Only takes one
Yay! Congratulations on reaching 300k any time now!
Harvest host is $70 on sale and you have to spend gas to find another...... and whatever you purchase at the harvest host location. At $1,000 a month total income, not happening.
Thanks! Some great information! And, all the apps sounded especially helpful. Thanks for all you do. ❤
It's about time. Had a job driving a street sweeper, a few Wal Marts were on my route.
Overnight RVer's blocked multiple rows of parking spaces, would get out of the RV and yell if I got too close/made too much noise, left a mess behind (urine bottles, feces, garbage).
Your hair looks awesome
Squatters in RV's have ruined it for Vanlifer's for staying at Cultmart. You can't move in and stay there 24/7 setting up all around outside your vehicle, which they were doing.
I stay overnight at the Walmart in Cedar city Utah. Very nice and quiet area. Lots of food options walking distance. I called first for approval of course.
We used HH this fall. We stayed at 4 different HH and all the hosts were great. My husband loved it too and he is hard to please sometimes.
Agree, thanks for posting 😊
We just had a shooting at a Walmart in Spokane, an officer had to shoot someone, they evacuated the store. The police and fire dept were there. I guess this has been happening all over America. So sad, whats wrong with people?
I think Cracker Barrel allows RV'ers too! Or used to. Last year in April, I stayed and got a great meal to boot! 😊😊😢
That discount for Harvest Host only gets you the basics with is alot of dump stations out west. You will pay extra for a full list of locations.
Been following since day one. ❤❤❤still love your videos 😊❤❤. Love the info. If its out there you have it and I know you will always share it. Happy Trails. 😊
Great video good information thank you for sharing looking forward to seeing your next episode
Awesome and thank you very much for this!
I think I depends on your Rig or CarVan… I stayed from Fulltime VanLife March-Sept ‘23 80% of my travel time. Never had an issue.
That’s inconvenient. Robin said that she doesn’t like making reservations ahead of time but you obviously have to do it with Harvest Hosts.
@@ceciliapetrowsky2572 Yes. Very, very few permit same day reservations, now.
I'm from WNY snd you are correct. Letchworth State Park is beautiful and my most favorite park in the world!❤️
