as a massive blink fan who grew up loving them, Travis was always a step ahead in crazy ability. drummers rarely get noticed especially these days, he did and now plays multi genres of music. he's a proper talent
This was litarlly less then a year before they broke up. They were just all not into it or each other that this point. Which really makes me sad because they could have been so good if the had actually cared.
Peter Collins he fucked everything up with his damn ego IMO and from my perspective. He wants to be this poser rockstar type while Mark and Travis are staying true to the Blink image which IMO is what they SHOULD be doing and just alter the image they've created. Some say Tom just wants to grow up and play mature music, to me it seems like he's been wanting this ever since he stopped play his signature strat and should have just done it instead of leading Blink on and creating the failure of Neighbourhoods. Idk, I just wish he could make his mature shite and when he's on stage with Blink stay true to the Blink image and do his own shit on the side.
I'm not a Blink 182 listener and not really familiar with this song outside of this performance, but I am drummer. From 2:45 onward Travis is playing in time. He's playing a bunch of 36th notes and the snare is pretty syncopated, but it's in 4/4 and at the same tempo as what Tom is playing on guitar just before he starts that beat. The snare hit at 2:49 and the cymbal hit at 2:55 are both right on beat 1. It sounds odd because Tom seems thrown off and tries to change his tempo a bit to match this odd (but in time) beat, which throws off what Travis is playing because he was already playing the right tempo when he started the beat.
The reason why Travis is playing so good and so hard is because everyone in the band knows that theyre about to break up. tom is just going through his motions and mark...you can just tell he doesnt even wanna be there. so Travis is doing everything he can to put on a show for their fans and to entertain them. God bless Travis Landon Barker
3:02 Mark looking at Travis like; Man, what the F you doing? The song is over! Lol epic! Lot of people are complaining about this version in the comments but I love it!
mark: hey Tom what song should we play on the talk show with the old guy? tom: let's just play the most emo one we have, and make it more emo. mark: sure man.
+Im mad Just delete ur comment I read that once and it clearly said that it looks like travis pulled up two random guys to play it doesn't say travis sings ...
+Unwired Society He kept time through his whole outro. It may be hard to follow but he didn't go off. He did this a lot while performing this song live.
Didn't go off time once, or go twice as fast, he just doubled the note value and did loads of syncopated drum 'n' bass stuff that sounded like it was off time and faster. He did and still does loads of improv stuff like this live, especially with Down.
Didn't go off time once, or go twice as fast, he just doubled the note value and did loads of syncopated drum 'n' bass stuff that sounded like it was off time and faster. He did and still does loads of improv stuff like this live, especially with Down.
@tommyboyjeffs hes not using an electronic bass drum. hes using his left foot on the bass drum. if you look at 1:45 carefully youll see he hits the bass pedal with his left foot then shifts his foot left to hit the hi hat
It's an off timing beat and blink is known for making weird timings to their songs. It was good and done right. As a musician I know this very well. A lot of pop punk bands do this. Travis was perfectly fine.
+dom anant So you're saying you do? That you write, record music and know this stuff? Man you are funny I would like to hear what you've written. Probably nothing. And I've got proof but whatever I don't need to proof anything to you
It's not an "off timing beat", its just travis playing a really fast syncopated dnb beat. Blink and pop punk bands are known for weird timings or doing this.
Not the best performance by blink and Mark's singing was just crap. Idk how he was feeling that day, but the way he sang "down down down down" was just horrible :\
@Poulmy 2:47 isnt a polyrhythm. I dont know where people are getting the idea that it is, but if you actually knew what a polyrhythm is you wouldnt be making this mistake. Polyrhythms are playing 2 or more time signatures simultaneously. Whilst this would have sounded good for a solo (maybe), this was just a minor screw up on his behalf playing it randomly in this song.
@XclarkeX182 triggers dnt make it sound quicker, it "triggers" a sound so the drum can sound how you want it to without having to be perfectly in tune. it is all him playing.
I don't care, I'm saying it - I think this performance was sloppy as fuck. Travis is off doing some awesome things and Mark and Tom are nowhere near on the same page. Mark's voice was pretty shoddy here, which happens...and Tom seems like he was trying to perfect his new voice while playing a shit version of Down on guitar. If I didn't know Blink 182, I'd be like wtf is this? And I get that they can get rough in the punk way during live shows, having fun and whatnot...but this is not that.
Hm, Im a drummer too but I definitely feel like something goes wrong with the tempo at 2:46 Something is off to me. Travis is my favorite drummer though and blink RARELY does anything questionable so its probably a fluke. But I also dont think my ears are bad, then again i dont beleive yours are "bad" either... so im curious what your opinion is on 2:46?
its sad how u argue about how good a band is live. i mean come on! if u wanna see a good band live that u dont have to hope for a good chorus then listen to greenday
people commenting on travis being out of time or not playing well make me giggle. You people are CLEARLY not musicians, let alone drummers. as a drummers for the last 21 years i can say with certainty and experience that this was on point and que far and beyond what he would normally play with this song live. this is hands down his best drumming for the song down (cd recording aside). I would love to hear opposition with a credible source saying otherwise
He didn't even perfect an easy fill. What kind of drugs are you on? Oh and it's not just about the drummer, they're supposed to be a band and sync in with one another. Anyone who listens to music can tell the difference between what is off timing/rhythm or not. Lmao stop being pretentious.
about 10 years ago i seen blink live and Travis did this amazing drum solo in the air he was strapped in it was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the most the i remember!! i love travis!!
This is in no way "SICK drumming by travis". I don't like to be a hater, but this entire performance was a mess (except Tom's singing which is definitely a rarity). The end is an off-time nightmare.
+Erik Schuessler I love Travis's drumming, but it really was. I've tried playing that alternate outro myself and it's like throwing a drum kit down the stairs, it's a nightmare.
The fault is clearly with Travis, with his inappropriate drumming he brings the others out. He clearly missed the job in this performance and should think about what a drummer's job is.
Ryndan Riley barker is extremely overrated man. People who ride his nuts are generally not actual musicians and dont understand what they're listening to/watching.. and cant look past his stupid image and dumbass drumming techniqu which is terrible.
+John Bourgeois His keeps his timing just fine all the way to the end. He does this a lot while performing this song live because it offers him the freedom to play like this. It may be difficult to follow but the timing is all there.
John Bourgeois I agree he is very overrated but he does write some cool stuff every now and then, and he hits the drums as hard as he should to give them the right tone. He's not the terrible at drumming, but he's definitely not better than half the college aged drummers you'll find in local bands in every city in the U.S. So I agree with you, but in my opinion he isn't terrible. Usually competent enough and occasionally interesting is my opinion.
Justin Kaminski I understand, but he is off here. It could be a micing issue or something, but he comes in faster than Tom was playing at the beginning, and then his fill at the end of the first verse misses the beat and goes a little longer than on time, which then throws off both tom and mark for the beginning of the chorus, and it sort of just continues that way for the rest of the song. Maybe he couldn't hear them or something but Mark and Tom keep readjusting to his changes in tempo in this one.
There is no way that Travis's drumming is good here. He is playing way too fast. What drugs are you people on? I love Travis too, but he's clearly sabotaging the performance. Less than a year later Blink is on hiatus. Surprised? By what's happening in this video, I'm not.
Do you have any idea how a band works? The drummer leads the band, and keeps the tempo. Travis is consistent through the whole song, mark and tom are out of sync, only exception is at the end of the first verse. If you knew anything, you would know that the hiatus was all because of Tom. That is why Tom made A&A, and Mark and Travis made +44. Tom wanted to play different music and A&A shows what he wanted, and that has obviously carried onto Blink since now they play similar weird music. Still good. Even now you can see Tom wants the band done his way.
MGRaiden64 Just because you come off as posing like you understand how bands work, doesn't mean that you are right. You have to be a fan boy or something. No one in their right minds could actually think that Travis was, either purposefully or accidentally (having an off night), playing in time. His tempo was really off, with all of his speeding up and slowing down. I do play in bands and good ones at that. I also understand music. Stop with all the anger. I'm just pointing out what is painfully obvious. That's all. My wife is a drummer as well and she agrees. So does my drummer. It's crazy that you ACTUALLY think that it isn't the drummer's job to set the time. It's the guitarist's/singer's job to sing in sync with the time and the beat.
amandio silveira Oh you play in a band? Your wife is a drummer? You must know everything! Please, tell me about your bands and how I can see you guys live. Please show me the times of the video where Travis randomly slows down and speeds up. If you show me a point of transition in the video i will only laugh Those last two sentences only contradicted themselves. "It's the guitarist's/singer's job to sing in sync with the time and the beat" Are you implying that Tom is the problem in this video? All you said is that it's Tom's job to sing and play in sync with the beat, which is the drummer.... A simple google search will show you that the drummer leads the band.
@Firecrotch6979 Ok expert. What time signature is he playing with his right hand? Left hand? And bass? If you can answer those to me and prove that they are all different time signatures and that it is indeed a polyrhythm, then fair play to you. If you can't....then I guess that resolves this "argument" =)
The chorus is done perfectly, everything else is too fast. Especially the outro after he does the rim percussion stuff. Jesus christ. It really did fuck up the whole performance. I mean it wasn't like modern-day Lars Ulrich butchering, but still.
***** hahahahahahahahahha "if you knew anything about music" what a comment though, if you honestly think that is in time you really need to sit in a room with a metronome till you can count in time
Dude, Travis was perfectly on time. The guy definitely has his short comings in terms of technique and philosophy, but he has an internal clock that is fantastic. The 'pre outro' section especially while playing on the rim showed fantastic syncopation between the picked notes of the guitar. It's a melody in itself!
this is so sad, you can tell this was during the middle of their fighting and that they were about to break up, especially mark, he has absolutely no emotion and frankly doesnt even seem like he is trying to sing well. im just glad they are back together now
Neil Stafford Idk wtf you're counting but the end was definitely off. Even the bassist got all quiet because he couldn't follow whatever the fuck that was. Travis was showing off and let it get to his head and overcompensated.
Blink 182 is 2 punk rocker guitarists that just learned to play guitars and one world class drummer, who holds down 80% of the music. Thats what it seems like. The other two dudes are just chillin. :) Im just playin, but thats what it looks like. Travis is doin 90% of the work.
I'm sorry but with Travis's standards this was not a good performance by him. At the 0:46 drumsolo he fucked up and dragged alot. Playing that last part at the end the way he did was also a REALLY bad decision. Sure it may have sounded cool but it didn't fit at ALL. The performance overall was really rushed and terribly overplayed. I know this was a bad time for the band with all the tension but especially for travis since his drug-use was at it's worst here. He was probably on speed or something similair here.
oh pleaase. of course their voices are shit, as wwebadgerse said - the band started as a joke. they're out there to have fun. as long as the fans enjoy their music, let them enjoy it. if i ever got to see them live (which i wouldnt be able to because travis is scared of flying and im in europe), i wouldnt even think twice about their voices.
@kc101699 are you kidding me? blink was famous before they had travis, scott raynor was an amazing drummer but just more punk. travis is more mainstream which made them bigger, but they were already big. dont get me wrong, i love them now, but i loved them then too.
@humbug595 I know what a poly rythm is. That's why I said "polyrythm/outside the pocket drumming", because I wasn't sure that it was a polyrythm. And now that I listen it again I can say that it's a polyrythm. He does a rythm with his right hand and another with his left hand. I'm not a polyrythm expert but it sounds like one to me.
you guys do realize the reason travis is struggling a little is because he's playing with his opposite foot right? This is when he was playing with a broken right foot so he had to teach himself all their songs all over with his left foot There's an interview floating around somewhere Reasrch people research watch travis he's spot on only when he's not injured
i dont understand what travis is doing that makes it different from any other time and how did he confuse tom, ( im a huge blink fan, i just dont know whats going on) can someone explan?
btw, travis payed with his left foot. His right foot was broke at the time.
OOOOOHHHHH ok! very cool.
how. He has his left on the hi hat and his right on the bass
Nope.
Fubar Bundy you can clearly see in the vid that hes playing the bass with his left
Jake Wojcik that's his pad for the deep rap bass. Not the real bass drum sound (clicky plastic sound) it's the Roland pad
Apparently, no one seems to notice he has a broken leg here. He's playing the bass drum with his off foot. Dude is friggin' amazing!
Lol not just that he switched the bass and his hat pedals outright, that shit is fucking impressive
Gravity ceases to exist on Mark's head.
Malcolm H FUCK XD
Malcolm H marks voice is so fucking boring in every fucking show
Malcolm H you're never getting anymore likes
slenjamiah and tom sounds like a fucking whale since 2004
Ugliness ceases to exist within the band.
you dont need to put "sick drumming by travis" on the tittle to show that in that video travis plays awesome, no, he always plays awesome
he plays twice faster than the original song
It was fucking too much..
He messed the beat
@@pedromacedo3109 Yeah you can really here it in the post chorus & bridge
He played with his left leg
Mark-"So what tempo do you guys wanna play the song at tonight?"
Travis-"Yes".
as a massive blink fan who grew up loving them, Travis was always a step ahead in crazy ability. drummers rarely get noticed especially these days, he did and now plays multi genres of music.
he's a proper talent
I watched him play drums lives with a broken foot for plus 44 and you couldn't even tell. amazing performer
That's the first time I've seen Tom singing better than Mark live. What's up with Mark? He looks pissed off, totally out of tune too
This was litarlly less then a year before they broke up. They were just all not into it or each other that this point. Which really makes me sad because they could have been so good if the had actually cared.
+klx125cross Maybe if Tom didn't wanna start being a typical rock douche.
+MrSpencerMcIntosh wtf did tom do?

was it cut or edit?
Nah he was just waiting for the cue

Mark was hanging out with Robert Smith a whole lot then.
You can tell hahah.
Also for the pink t-shirt.
It's like Travis has let two randoms from the audience get up and play who have never heard the song before and don't know how to sing.

If you show me a point of transition in the video i will only laugh
Those last two sentences only contradicted themselves. "It's the guitarist's/singer's job to sing in sync with the time and the beat" Are you implying that Tom is the problem in this video? All you said is that it's Tom's job to sing and play in sync with the beat, which is the drummer....
A simple google search will show you that the drummer leads the band.
Ironically, when they were at each other the most personally they sounded the best on stage live.
He can hold his own for sure ! Glad I found this !
Lol at 3:00 ! Mark just stands there wondering what the hell Travis is playing! Appalling...
Fact
Before Travis started to drum to a click track... he used to fuck up all the songs like this!
Yeah sounded shit didn't it. I mean he's one hell of a drummer but fucking hell...
The chorus is done perfectly, everything else is too fast. Especially the outro after he does the rim percussion stuff. Jesus christ. It really did fuck up the whole performance. I mean it wasn't like modern-day Lars Ulrich butchering, but still.
Its their track so they can't butcher it.
If you knew anything about music, you'd know he was perfectly in time. Silly people
Get a fucking brain listen to the outro you moron. He was pulling a modern day Lars Ulrich in that part.
*****
hahahahahahahahahha "if you knew anything about music" what a comment though, if you honestly think that is in time you really need to sit in a room with a metronome till you can count in time
Dude, Travis was perfectly on time. The guy definitely has his short comings in terms of technique and philosophy, but he has an internal clock that is fantastic. The 'pre outro' section especially while playing on the rim showed fantastic syncopation between the picked notes of the guitar. It's a melody in itself!
this is so sad, you can tell this was during the middle of their fighting and that they were about to break up, especially mark, he has absolutely no emotion and frankly doesnt even seem like he is trying to sing well. im just glad they are back together now
I agree with you Snorri. I'm not so good at drums but I know the difference between bad and good drumming and this is good^^
haha at the end of the first verse he fucks up lol
CA dreamin' min? please
CA dreamin' in what minute does it happens?
***** 0.48 - 0.49
didn't fuck up, just playing a 17/16 fill ;)
+CA dreamin' he wasnt doing it for that reason. He was just putting his hands behind his head?
Horrible timing/tempo. travis sucks here you have no clue what good drumming is
uhh, no he doesn't...
His timing and tempo control are actually pretty good. I don't think he a legend like some people do but he's not a bad drummer by any means.
Neil Stafford
Im not saying its awful during the song, but what was he doing at the end? That wasnt on time with the song at all.
Neil Stafford Idk wtf you're counting but the end was definitely off. Even the bassist got all quiet because he couldn't follow whatever the fuck that was. Travis was showing off and let it get to his head and overcompensated.
Neil Stafford Yeah just because it counts out 4/4.....DOESNT MAKE IT RIGHT OR APPROPRIATE AT THAT TIME. It clashed and sounded like shit
hahaha "sick drumming"? he loses time and is all over the place, worst i've ever heard travis and he's an amaaaaaazing drummer, really weird.
Thank you!!!!!
anthony lewis no
@jpindelicato1 yeah thats why he has another closed hihat under the ride, and this is one of the few performances where he used double bass pedal.
He was probably on speed or something similair here.
that singing is killing my ears
the guitar solo is pathetic
wtf is wrong with blink 182?
The only talented person in blink is tracks barker. They started as a joke band, they even admit to being bad.
oh pleaase. of course their voices are shit, as wwebadgerse said - the band started as a joke. they're out there to have fun. as long as the fans enjoy their music, let them enjoy it. if i ever got to see them live (which i wouldnt be able to because travis is scared of flying and im in europe), i wouldnt even think twice about their voices.
nah, tom just sucks live. He was good back in 2000-2003 live.
Nothing dude this is punk.. its more about the feeling they pur behind... fuck all
Andrei jj *pop punk, two very different things
Travis is out of tempo.
+Luke Harnen Nop, but weird af yeah.
+Luke Harnen I'm drummer and he isn't out of tempo
+André Soares I am a professional studio drummer... He is very much out of time at the end.
+Luke Harnen Nope
Yes he is, at the end there is a massacre
@kc101699 are you kidding me? blink was famous before they had travis, scott raynor was an amazing drummer but just more punk. travis is more mainstream which made them bigger, but they were already big. dont get me wrong, i love them now, but i loved them then too.
This is so fucking insanely good
Travis's drum solo at the end was so out of time too
Ummm.. yeah Travis is a mess in the song. The only one who was remotely on beat in this song was Mark.
travis is my fav drummer. so crazy.
@mattoffthewall I know exactly what youre talking about.. slows down a bit in the fill causing him to end it a beat late.. Youre right.
I love Mark's hair it fits him so well in this video lol.
Plus: Mmm post-The Transplants drumming of Travis... and mmm post- The Transplants Travis
@Firecrotch6979 Which keyboard effect is that you're talking about lol?
@southpark990 dumb question but do u use both legs to play the drums?
@humbug595 I know what a poly rythm is. That's why I said "polyrythm/outside the pocket drumming", because I wasn't sure that it was a polyrythm. And now that I listen it again I can say that it's a polyrythm. He does a rythm with his right hand and another with his left hand. I'm not a polyrythm expert but it sounds like one to me.
tom's hair is amazing
you guys do realize the reason travis is struggling a little is because he's playing with his opposite foot right?
This is when he was playing with a broken right foot so he had to teach himself all their songs all over with his left foot
There's an interview floating around somewhere
Reasrch people research watch travis he's spot on only when he's not injured
Mark, lol :D that shirt, that hair :D
lovely. all of it.
was this when travis broke his ankle because he is using a double pedal to control the bass drum with his left foot
i dont understand what travis is doing that makes it different from any other time and how did he confuse tom, ( im a huge blink fan, i just dont know whats going on) can someone explan?
when did travis barker start using a double pedal look at 1:40
That makes sense, I am glad you cleared that up. Thanks!
