In your most recent videos, the image quality is very good, not that it was bad in older videos but the newest seem to me to be a step up. Would you mind saying what equipment you are using? Thanks
Honestly available light is the biggest factor. This heron likes to hunt before the sun comes up so sometimes my ISO is pretty high I have a Canon R6 and an older but very nice EF lens, a 400 mm DO lens. I use it over 90% of the time because it is light enough to carry and it can still reach out pretty well. In fact with this heron I usually have to step back to get the proper composure.
I typically go to the parks on weekdays around dawn and they typically begin hunting gophers then. Lately gopher hunting has been tough and the heron gives up early after a half hour or so. She’ll then typically hunt crayfish and within an hour she can catch her fill and she’ll stand by the pond for hours to the best of my knowledge. I sometimes come back and see her. I have been following off and on the same heron for almost a year. It has distinctive features so I know it is the same one. I have seen her hunting gophers almost all day long and I have seen her catch as many as three in a day in a nearby park.

My guess is that the gopher was a mother defending her nearby underground babies. That’s the only way that behavior makes sense to me.

Daammm. I’ve yet too see them have a limit as to what they can swallow 😳
I’ve seen them catching and eating a big gopher and then eat another and then crawdads. I agree

Yeah I call her Greta. There is another heron I sometimes see that I think is a male. I call him Eddie Van Heron
