You’re welcome. I have loved birds of prey since I was young. I’ve learned in the last couple years what great predators herons can be. It has been a challenge in the last few weeks but I’ll keep trying
You’re welcome and I am very happy you enjoyed the video. This particular heron was a favorite of mine. I miss her like she was a pet. I’ve looked a lot lately but I haven’t had much luck. I do miss following a heron as it hunts. I did for a short time yesterday but there it is tough for the herons to find gophers this year. It’s tough for me anyway to find them.
I think they are actually considered nocturnal but since the live in burrows they do feed just about anytime. I find early morning to be most productive but anytime is possible.
I’m pretty sure it does so to help wash it down. With this heron , I could usually tell when she would take the gopher to water. If they were small, she would just swallow them but if they were pretty big, she’d soak them to help lubricate them.
Its amazing to me that pretty much the same method they use to capture fish works on small terrestrial prey as well. It certainly pays to be a generalist.
Yeah they are really good at fish or crayfish or gophers or lizards or just about anything. They can spear a big fish in the same way they catch gophers or delicately grab a minnow in the same way they might catch an insect or an earthworm.
I love the clarity of the video. Very nice camera work.
Awesome to watch the Herons in action, love those birds
Yeah I do too.
I didn't know they hunted gophers
As the GBHs are great at catching gophers, you are great at catching great footage, sir. Excellent patience!
Thanks. I’m definitely more patient than I used to be. My herons are experts at patience.
ps I have seen your footage on other people's posts. Are you aware???
@@p47koji yeah I have seen a couple. One was good enough to at least credit me. Thanks for the heads up.
I was recommended to your channel by YT and immediately I was hooked. Thank you so much for sharing your videos Mr. Zenor. Keep it going, more videos.

Very interesting. Seems that not being nocturnal is a big issue for these rodents.
