Yeah a house, haha what a cool thing to own in our Climate Change era we live in. You never hear people buying private flats on here, or buying into a Housing Cooperative, interesting isnt it?😐😐
Hey congrats on the engagement and the house! It’s SUCH a huge thing to do both of those things much less in the same year! I hope your wedding rules and you and your spouse have a blast because I love your content!
Someone did the math. If you were to spend your entire life, as of the time of the video that I saw this from, were to play every "good" video game ever (defined as having a high enough score on Metacritic and filtering out extraneous yearly sports releases), you'd basically have to start from childhood, sleep 4 hours a day, have someone else cook/clean, and otherwise constantly be playing games and maybe you'd finish by the time you were like 80 something. And we've had a few years of gaming since then, and more years of "good" games to follow. After watching that video, I realized that, not just video games, but for media as a whole, I cannot experience every good thing. There's just not enough time. So it's okay if I'm picky with what I enjoy. Choose to ignore certain genres. My mortal life is limited after all. EDIT: Ah yeah so cool to hear you jumping into Stormlight. So much good.
The lesson I learned was to finally stop caring what reviewers and youtubers think about games. Just go in open minded and make your own judgements rather than spoiling an experience with the thoughts of others
Agreed. I only look for opinions after I've already played a game and I'm curious if others like/dislike it for similar reasons. Only if I have no interest at all in a game I will listen to people talking about it before I play it myself.
I do recommend to have ONE reviewer. I think of SkillUp as my doctor of sorts. I wouldn’t have played Astro Bot, or Outer Wilds, or Nier Automata without that sexy piece of Australian accent. Find at least one quality reviewer you generally agree with, and you can trust them.
Yeah, no point in trying to follow "the masses". Look out the specialist in genres you can agree with, be mindful of your budget, and just lose yourself in it.
Hey KingK, thank you so much for this video, as always your end-of-year videos stand as my favourite videos of yours across each year. The reflection and reminiscence you bring to these end-of-year videos with a tasteful and resonant melding of your experiences playing video games and personal experiences through the big ol' journey of life, always brings me great comfort and warmth in the reflection of my own year spent on this planet. This video was no different, and I am wholeheartedly grateful for it. A massive congratulations on your engagement and buying your new house, this is phenomenal and truly wonderful news should be celebrated to the high heavens! I wish you and your partner the very best in 2025, as you and all of us deserve, and may God bring you everlasting hope, health and happiness. P.S. Please could you put the playlist of background tracks you used in this video and use in future videos in the description, that would be so awesome as I always love the music you play - THANK YOU! :)
The last section of the video was pretty bitter sweet. I hope I can speak for all of your fans by saying you should never feel restricted on what videos you want to make or what games you want to cover. It’s been a pleasure to be a part of your journey through the years and for the future of your channel King K. Congrats on the house and on your engagement!
You were the person I had with me on my journey through Kingdom Hearts. It was something that was on my bucket list since I was 5 and now that I graduated from college I completed them all in 2 months. With every finished game I then watched your video on them. It was like a reward (and I was happy I wasn't the only one who cried playing KH3 lol). My game of the year 2024 is 100% KH2 and lookin forward to running through every Final Fantasy in 2025!
19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1
dude are you me. this was straight up my experience too. kh2 absolutely rocks! KingK's videos on KH are all fantastic and are deeply intertwined with what's now an unparalleled nostalgia.
Put simply, you’re getting older. We value our time the more we keep in mind it is finite. Remasters, lazy remakes and new games that tread old ground feel cheap because they aren’t novel to us. But that’s life. Don’t force interest. Enjoy what you have while you have it.
Yeah man. That's also part of why I don't bother platinuming/ 100%ing games. I have my fun with it, then move on. I might come back to it, but only when I feel like it'll be fun again. Once a game is a little boring, that's it. And this is from a life long gamer. You could probably have called me an addict for most of my life lol
Yep. I quit rebirth halfway through and realized these ubisoft type games aren't for me. Then played elden ring and had a much better and more meaningful experience
@@key099able You're welcome to create videos on the games you enjoy. I was responding to topics raised in this specific video. Don't be so... main character-y?
I have used the Dragon Quest 8 OST to study/edit videos to for almost 10 years. Seriously one of the greatest soundtracks in gaming history. SO glad that managed to make it onto your nightly steam deck rotation.
Remakes are helpful for people who weren't around for the original release. Unless you want to pirate/emulate, playing Thousand Year Door before the remaster can be quite expensive and isn't very accessible.
Ended up picking up and playing 1000xResist from this video, I’ve finished it about an hour ago. What an incredible game and story, thank you for your recommendation.
I think the remake discussion is a little misguided. Although I also wish these games were more than a graphical update, I see them more as a chance for more people to join the discussion around these games that they weren't present for when the originals were released. You could always argue that if people want to join in that they should play the original via emulation or god forbid buy the original consoles and games but I feel like barely anyone would realistically do that. Although those graphics may be charming to someone who grew up with them, most people would look at them and choose to play something else instead. Remakes, however, modernize these classics for a new generation so that the conversation continues. Without remakes, I'm sure most of these classic franchises would die. And I for one, wouldn't want them to.
yes. Remakes / Remasters should always be celebrated because it takes a lot of effort to port/develop these just like a new game. You're so right about a lot of modern gamers not picking up retro titles because they look old. You don't realize what a strong tint those rose colored glasses are until you hear someone else say "oh man those chunky pixels in Pokemon Red + Blue are so outdated" So yeah It's a chance for new gamers to ease into a game that you also like. It's on us to not hit them with the "I liked it before you!" BS
Agreed. One of my favorite games is Nier Replicant, specifically because of the remake. The original is a messy, ugly, sometimes tedious game that benefitted from the remake making it feel more like Automata in QOL improvements, controls, and better graphics. And I never would have given it or the original 360/PS3 version the time of day had the remake not made more people aware that there was more to the series than Automata.
This is a pretty silly (flawed) take on what remake's offer newer players. 9 times out of 10, the experience a remake offers is in many ways inequivalent to an experience of it's respective original. NieR Replicant and Paper Mario TTYD 2024 are good examples of close to near identical remakes much closer to the objectives of a "remaster" but other titles like Silent Hill 2 2024, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Persona 3 Reload are distinctly their own games coasting off the name and iconography of a distinctly different iconic title. Playing a remake like those certainly puts you in a position to discuss it, but you'd be kidding yourself to think you bring anything to the table regarding the discussion of the original title. Companies should be held to the standard of bringing older titles up for game's preservation, but otherwise if a given person doesn't feel inclined to freely emulate a older game or shell out honestly not usually a crazy amount to play a game on original hardware, then they probably didn't want to play it that bad in the first place, and there's no shame in that.
@Screedawg77 Well if you want a discussion about only the original game then yeah, of course only porting the original or emulating it would be the only way to do so. But for most discussions, as long as the characters and story are well told and well represented most people who only have played these remakes can mostly still join in on the conversation. Persona 3, for example, yeah you don't get the same janky feel from the original or even the female protagonist options from the PSP port, but you get an updated visual improvement on the story and you can join in discussions about the story even with someone who hasn't played the remake. If anything, it could be interesting to compare each others experiences. All I'm saying is that they shouldn't be written off so quickly or blanketed as having no value. There's plenty to love here.
@redheadmedia7901 Part of the disconnect here may stem from your assumption that remakes improve on the games they're remaking. I don't think I've yet encountered a player who played the original and reload, and came out preferring Reload. Many cited it as a visual and storytelling downgrade in several aspects. I'm also not sure who told you the original game was janky, it did have unique intended mechanics that weren't attempted to be included in Reload, if that's what you mean, but janky might not be the word for it. There's also remakes like the 2016 Ratchet and Clank and Final Fantasy VII Remake (albiet intentionally) that don't even attempt to maintain the same stories or gameplay, so in those cases there is little to no comparison or crossover at all. It's also common for remakes to adopt lazy practices, like how Persona 3 Reload stole its script from the intentionally sloppier and stilted portable, which itself had to be that way to accommodate the psp visuals, and how Ratchet and Clank cut all the original weapons and half the levels. Additionally, if we die I don't see why, at least as far as the mainstream is concerned, games shouldn't be allowed to die as well. Is it really a better fate for them to be Frankensteined into taking a new polarizing form to extend their lives?
Not a game that released this year but Tunic reminded me to spend my time with the game and that I feel so much more rewarded when I figure a solution out myself rather than looking it up. Incredible game
Congrats on the engagement and the house! Been watching you for at least 2 years now and always look forward to a new upload. Hope you have a great 2025!
I don't agree at all that remakes are not interesting to talk about. You're probably just burnt out trying to force yourself to like something you don't, or play something you are not vibing at the moment. Time is finite but it does not mean that playing a remaster/remake/old game is more "productive" than playing a new game.
@KingKlonoa sure of course, this year was also not the best for arguing in favor of games that deserved to be remade or remastered so I can kinda understand your sentiment at the moment
I was introduced to your channel from your Black and White Retrospective. Your writing, analysis, and passion had me hooked and I have been watching video after video ever since. Always with appreciation for your craft.
Congrats on the upcoming wedding, and wishing you the very best in 25. Your content is so poignant, and if I were still writing and creating content, this is exactly the kind of thing I would want to do. Something personal, meaningful, relatable. Happy new year, cheers to you.
Just wanting you to know that I've been watching your stuff for years and have appreciated all that you've done with your work. I'll watch whatever you make whether I've played the game or not. The ending of your Sun & Moon video brought me to tears and is something I'm going to hold on to for a long time. I started Metaphor last month and the idea of not finishing before the end of the year killed all momentum that I had going with it and this video helped me process that. Whatever you make people will be there to support it, take some swings. Congratulations on buying the house and getting engaged! I'm looking forward to whatever you end up making this year.
Fantastic viseo as always, King. I've been feeling a similar thing about 100%-ing games and it reached a breaking point this year with FFVII: Rebirth. I... just... don't give a s***t about all the busy work in so many AAA - especially when the main story absolutely slaps and I just want to do that. From now on, I'm going to play games in the most natural way I can - if the main quest is egging me on to find out what happens next, I'm not going to eschew it in favour of clearing all those arbitrary blips on the world map. Elden Ring was great for teaching this, as it is constantly giving you that "piece of candy" to follow and, before you know it, you're being thrown into a new area with more shiny candy - it really feels like you're swimming against the current if you try to 100% an area instead of following those interesting threads. Can't wait for more videos, mate - but only whenever you're ready to make what you want. (I also wouldn't mind reading your book...)
While I agree there is no “consensus truth” in art, I gotta say I am floored that you felt that way about Nine Sols. The combat is so engaging and the story literally changed my life and beliefs. I know it’s stupid to take it personally but that felt like a gut punch lol
Always happy to hear someone else is picking up Okami. I hope you enjoy it enough to do a video on it, it's one of those games that I played ages and ages ago that still sticks with me to this day.
I've always admired your ability to translate thoughts in your head about games into a coherent narrative. You paint a word picture quite well and the buttery smooth voice is icing on the cake. Happy new year KingK!
I left this video alone for a few days since my work week as been jam packed and I returned to watch a insanely beautiful video produced yet again. I was absolutely blowen (in a good way) when you said you had written more for your story. Your persona 4 video is one of the most powerful videos in general I have seen. And seeing your desire to make something start to come to fruition makes me so happy. I feel like I say this about every video you produce but I am looking forward to the future of the channel. Thanks I guess
Hey! Nothing too much to say here, but I've been watching your videos since I was in middle school, and I'm on the way to finishing university. Your stuff has been some of my favorite on the sight, not only for the content and analysis itself, but how much your tastes in games as a medium line up with my own. Congrats and the engagement and the house, you've more than earned it! Keep up the great work. Cheers to some awesome games this upcoming year.
I wish there had been a spoiler warning for Paper Mario: TTYD at 5:34. I was almost at that party in my playthrough, and while I kind of saw that reveal coming, I still would have liked to have been surprised by it. (The same thing happened to me in your Paper Mario Sticker Star video where you showed footage of the final TTYD boss, but maybe I should expected that in a Paper Mario video...?) I love listening to your videos while I work, and they would be even better if the gameplay displayed didn't contain endgame stuff. Or even a spoiler warning at the beginning would help. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Another amazing video as always KingK Almost every time you upload you capture the exact same things I have been feeling too. I love everything you make, please keep up the good work!
From one creator to another, do what you are passionate about and your viewers will reciprocate. I love the way you write and create your content, and the games you tend to have more of a deep seeded love for stand out above the rest to me in the content I rewatch from you. You're doing amazing work, keep it up KingK
I don’t know if this is fully accurate advice. Viewers choose videos primarily in interest even if they love the creator unless they are a completionist superfans. I understand you’re just being supportive but I think this video brings up an important topic of the tension between passion and profit and whether you should keep certain things about the love of the work or allow them to also be a source of income you rely on as you’re building a life which inevitably forces you to make compromises on your vision.
Great video. Your point about video game remakes really struck a chord with me. How remakes are about "fixing" the originals of every problem they had, regardless if anyone actually enjoyed the things that many people claim to be an "issue." It's something that I've been thinking about with the rumors of Sonic Heroes getting a remake. Sonic Heroes is one of my favorite Sonic games, as well as one of my favorite games in general. While part of me gets somewhat excited at the idea of it being remade, there's something specific about the idea of a Sonic Heroes remake that bothers me. There is one VERY specific aspect about Sonic Heroes when it comes to its writing that I love. It's not handled perfectly, but I still adore it. With the direction Sonic as a franchise has been going recently, especially with how the characters are written, I can almost guarantee the specific thing I like is going to be changed. However, the change itself is not what bothers me the most. The aspect that DOES bother me the most about this is I know most Sonic fans, especially those familiar with Sonic Heroes, will see the change as for the better. Meanwhile, I would think the opposite. Despite me feeling that I have good and understandable reasoning for not liking said change, voicing these thoughts would feel pointless, because I feel like SO MANY Sonic fans would disregard them. Not even considering the point I have to make, simply casting it aside as being "unreasonable" or something else along those lines. To say this is annoying would be an understatement. I know I'm talking about a theoretical change in a remake that hasn't even been officially confirmed yet as far as I'm aware. However, my feelings are based off of thoughts of other Sonic media that has come out, where people share similar opinions on this same subject that I end up disagreeing with. And I fear it may reach a point that something that I already love is going to be changed for the worse, and having my opinion undermined and disregarded because a ton of people agree the change is for the better. That anyone who disagrees is being unreasonable or weird. While I do believe there is a place for remakes in the world of video games, I do think something should be brought into question. Besides the obvious stuff like graphics and music quality, are the changes being made to the game for the sake of improving the overall experience, or to simply please the masses? Because there is a difference. P.S. For anyone who read my whole comment, first of all thank you, and second the thing I'm talking about is Amy's characterization. While it's not perfect, I love how Amy is written in Heroes. Her bravery when confronting Eggman and Metal Sonic. Her energetic attitude to going on an adventure. Her optimism in facing their challenges head-on. Her role as a leader and how she continuously encourages Cream and Big to keep moving forward and not give up. I love how she's written in Heroes, even if it's not perfectly handled in every way. However, I'm more than sure they would change how she's written, and I feel it would likely be for the worse. I could be wrong, but only time can tell. Anyway, thanks again to anyone who bothered to read my whole comment. I really appreciate it.
Hey KingK, I doubt you’ll see this but I’ve been binging your whole channel for the past couple weeks and I’ve loved every second of it. You’ve basically kept me sane and helped me forget the chronic back pain I’m dealing with. Thank you so much for every video you’ve made, including this one. Just today I had to do a 6 hour drive and I spent the whole drive listening to your pokemon Gen 1-5 retrospective compilation.
thank you for talking about Dread Delusion. I’m nearing the end of my playthrough now, and it’s the first game that has captivated my imagination so thoroughly in years. I think about its world, setting, and characters when I lay down to sleep at night. incredibly well-written stuff, and simple enough gameplay that I can get really into it without feeling overwhelmed.
Watching your videos (and having them used as things to help me when sleeping or gaming) helped me a lot in how I want to make videos in spite of all the differences me and you have. This video put out everything I had on my mind in terms of finishing media and I'm not sure what to take from this video as I'm watching, but....damn. A bit too real for me! XD Also, like what the other comment said, congrats on getting engaged and buying the house!
Congrats to you engagement. I married this year and for years I did not have the passion for gaming anymore. After sparking zeros release I bought a Ps5 but the games that I really enjoyed were ff7 remake and yesterday I finished rebirth. It was like a dream for me because ff7 was my first game on my ps1 but I was never to finish it. It was a nice trip down memory lane
7:25 I *heavily* disagree with your point here. People not agreeing with you does not mean you are unwelcome to discuss, and approaching the conversation from that angle feels like you're implicitly saying "if you don't agree with me, you must be ignoring me!"
I think some context is missing here. People didn't just disagree with me. They spammed this meme. Sometimes with absolutely zero context. It was to dunk on me, for posting a completely harmless opinion on a video game. THOSE people, and there were MANY of those people, did not want to talk. I'm tired of that. Apologies for not explaining that better, I didn't really feel like dwelling on it. I got so much heat that day it sent me to bad mind places.
@@KingKlonoa People who want to insult you like that aren't worth acknowledging. You aren't wrong to be frustrated with them at all, but it is worth saying that they're just pathetic for thinking that having any form of nuance in opinions towards remakes or even games in general means you're an idiot. It's like talking to kindergarteners
Keep on making stuff man, whatever it is people will return to it. Your writing, your voice and your opinions are valued by people. So don’t overthink it and go with your heart to make what you’re proud of. 🎉 happy new year bro
I honestly feel like ive had the opposite experience to you... I've always had this mindset that my time had to be "productive" and i had to "efficiently" comsume art, like you said. I would never play a game twice or read a book twice because i had already consumed it, no use wasting my precious time on it again. But lately I've learned to accept that art isnt a commodity to consume, but instead something to enjoy. Instead of planning out how to consume the most "good" content each year, sometimes ill replay old grindy RPGs because it brings me joy. The simple joy of wandering and collecting in Rebirth is fun to me, regardless of how "efficient" it is with my time. Stormlight is actually another example. I re-read the, notoriously long, books before every sequel to refresh my memory. And i love it every time
It sounds like we have the same mindset. My point was that I spent so much time doing stuff in Rebirth out of a sense of obligation, rather than because I felt fulfilled doing it. Whereas, I played hundreds of hours of Elden Ring and Metaphor, and conversely felt my time was very well spent on those. It's not about efficiency, it's about paying more attention to my intrinsic desires, whatever those are.
I loved this video and the final fantasy video. Those are the type of videos I subscribed for and I’m happy to hear that you’d like to pursue that further. This video made me realize that I should stop playing so many games and take my time with one at a time. Thank you for an amazing 2024 and look forward to 2025!
I think you are my favorite gaming youtuber. I think your measured takes are mature and authentic. Other gaming tubers are either too hyper or their “measured” takes feel more like being a contrarian is a part of their personality-which I am not a fan of. However you move forward with this channel, I hope you stay honest and authentic to yourself. Congrats on the big life changes!
In 2024 I also got engaged, bought a house, but instead of playing lots of games I watched almost 700 episodes of One Piece. Now I have weird associations between specific arcs and major landmarks in my life. I hope you can relate.
I don't imagine you shall have much time for this message, but I wish to express my ongoing, visceral gratitude for you and your channel. I used to be a financial supporter, but given housing costs and a new baby (on top of a teacher's salary) I couldn't justify that support any more. I apologise for that first up. That said, I remain an avid subscriber, as your thoughts on gaming and the nature of them as a medium are both poignant and ontologically rigorous to a satisfying degree. I love that you reflect on the nature of gaming as a whole, our attachment and feelings of obligation to said medium in your videos, whilst still maintaining an avid love and appreciation for them. I am glad you will continue to write on what brings you passion, and I will continue to watch and enjoy your content moving forward. I am so happy for your engagement - all my best wishes to you and your lucky partner, and congratulations on the house as well - good luck with the satisfaction (and challenges) that will pose moving forward. All my best wishes for the new year, and thanks once again for your superb content.
As a long time fan of your channel, I want you to know that I’d much rather watch year-end videos of ANYTHING you’ve played this year, not just new games that were released this year. I’d love to hear your perspective on classics!!
I didn't even bother trying to keep up with most new releases this year. I mostly spent it on my backlog and older games, most notably getting into the Resident Evil franchise.
Congratulations on the engagement and house!! That’s so huge! 1000xResist is so incredible, I still think about that story to this day. My favorite game this year 100% and I’m so glad you got to experience it this year. Six to one King. Also I’m totally with you on most of the remakes discussion, the only thing I can really add is I’m not sure I would’ve enjoyed TTYD as much as I did without the restoration of Vivian’s original story. TTYD was phenomenal outside of that story but Vivian made people like me feel seen which I wouldn’t have gotten in the original. Say what you will about the P3R change to the transphobic joke as while it made my first go one without the intense discomfort of that moment it also just erased a trans character entirely. I’m not sure how I’d feel going to previous versions of either game bc of those changes.
You echo my thoughts on Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth exactly. And although it sucks you didn't enjoy it, it's nice to hear an opinion that isn't simping over it. Congrats on the house and engagement too, dude!
Often, a passion turned profession will eat away at the host; passion succumbing to necessity. Some call it maturity. I call it a slow death. Invert the trend, let necessity give way to passion. Happy New Years
Once I gave up on the idea of being a completionist, I've started to enjoy gaming a lot more. It started with Breath of the Wild. There was no reason to hunt down every single shrine and korok seed other than to "check a box" And it makes the 2nd playthrough much more exciting because I still hadn't seen everything the game offers
Also started reading Stormlight Archive in 2024! What a great series of books... I'm glad it got me back into reading. I'd be interested in hearing thoughts on Xenoblade 3 as well, so I'll look forward to that video in the meantime!
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I will be waiting ever patiently for the Xenoblade 3 review. As someone who appreciates the series as much as I do, your opinion on it is and will be incredibly valued. Especially for a story that’s as… remarkably topical as its story is.
Hey Friend. Really love your videos. You are a good writer with poignant insights and accessible perspectives. You are in my top 10, perhaps even 5, content creators on youtube. And I consider myself a man of discerning taste, if that means anything to you. Congrats on leveling up. Hope you find a good balance between what you want and what you need. Cheers mate. Happy New year.
Another wonderful video! I look forward to what you do in 2025, it's always worth it and makes for better quality videos when you make the content you want to make instead making the content you feel like you should make, even if it means videos are fewer or farther in between. Hope you have a wonderful 2025 ❤
I feel like 2024 was one of my personal favorite years of video gaming, even though I didn't play any game that came out in 2024. I played many impactful games for the first time, and some of them have become my favorite games ever! Games I played last year include: Inscryption Furi Undertale Oxenfree Pineapple on Pizza Here's hoping 2025 is just as good or better!
Maybe engineering school was a bad idea, I'm nowhere near buying a house yet but this guy's the same age as me and bought a house this year. Clearly this means I should play more video games 🧠 Congrats on the engagement though! Big W, much love to the future QueenK
Have a happy new year my guy. I hope ya can continue to do what you love, as well as have a work/life balance. You got a bright future ahead of you. Btw, have you ever thought about doing audiobooks? Cuz you have a great narrator's voice. Just curious.
I learned to truly love JRPGs. Finished Persona 4 and 5, started P3 Reload, and just finished FFXV after putting it on hiatus for YEARS. Made me cry like a baby at the end. Theres just a level of emotion and cultivation of the characters in JRPGs that just isnt found elsewhere and i love it. Played a ton of bf4 too lol
I started Assassins Creed Valhalla this year, played 3-4 hours and haven’t gone back to it. It just wasn’t for me, but looking back on it, I’m glad I didnt sink 50-60 hours into it, I’m glad I had the maturity to put it down and realize I didn’t have to sink several hundred hours to enjoy something. Sometimes you just don’t want to play something
I think I didn´t play any of the games of 2024. I skipped them all in favor of older titles. Right now I am playing Batman: Arkham City for the first time. And I will skip most of the side missions because of my limited time. And it will be fun nonetheless because the simple act of just BEING Batman is so much fun to me. :-)
cant believe you also played dragon quest 8, i have the 3ds port that im planning to play soon after i try out the chibi robo titles on 3ds. i just finished photo finder and found it immensely charming with a moving story towards the end about nostalgia and how it should be a means to share the things we love. its sad to see such a fun title for the 3ds receive so much hate back on its release.
Brothers A Tale of Two Sons taught me that they are always with no, no matter where they go. Sometimes when you think you're alone, you're actually being propelled by their strength, even if you don't know it.
I played the most games this year than ive ever done in my life prior. Over 100 new games. Only 2 were triple A games. Usually AAA games front load a ton of my games i play, if i had 40 games that year maybe 20 were AAA. This year was different. I had more fun with the small 2-10 hour games than i have ever had with AAA 20-100 hour games. Smaller games just understand what they are, and how much fun they can get out of ideas and wrap it up on the die down of the fun mountain. AAA games juat have mechanics that they use to milk over and over to the point its just brain melting.
I'd say that my 2024 is similar to yours in some aspects. I played less games and the few that I did play were from previous years (Hollow Knight, Cyberpunk 2077, and Xenoblade 2 for me). And I also picked up reading again lol.
@KingK your perspective on video game backlog reminds me a lot of BBKDragoon and his same feelings on gaming as a hobby. Curious if you guys have connected before
I've been entirely burned out on any game even approaching open world after sinking over 150 hours into my first Xenoblade Chronicles 3 playthrough, so I skipped basically all of the open world of Rebirth. That game felt exhausting -- even the Temple of Ancients felt miserable to me. I've since returned to it and have had a generally better experience playing it slowly and infrequently, vs the absolute binge that was my first playthrough on launch. I did get sucked into Dondoko island in Y8 though. But I understand what you're saying about wanting a salve for the disappointment of those games. The writing in Yakuza 7 was stellar and Yakuza 8 really disappointed me on that front, so I tried to squeeze every last drop of game from it to compensate. I've since pivoted to spending most of my free time writing fiction stories and it's brought me a lot of joy and sense of purpose. Happy new year KingK!
This year you git to Dragon Quest (my favourite series) 8 (one of my favourite games) and are considering Okmai as well. Enjoy, I wish I could play both of those games for the furst time again
I think it’s awesome you came around on elden ring. Tbh, even tho I did push through it day one back when you were wondering if it just wasn’t for you, I hated it by the end and ranked it below most of the other games in the series. This year however, I gave it another chance before SOTE and it has gradually become my favorite of Fromsoft’s offerings. Even tho I still haven’t quite branched off into the magic side of gameplay, I realized just how much new mechanics like posture, guard counters, and jumping add to the melee combat over older titles. It’s really fun when it all comes together.
If you've picked up reading again, you simply must read Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling. It has influenced me more than any other piece of narrative has, and it is a truly astounding book. Based on your tastes in games, themes and narratives I believe you would cherish that book as much as I do.
Remakes are great for introducing new people to a classic. As such, I'm pretty willing to try a remake of a renowned game when I haven't played the original. But I'm not likely to care about a remake of a game I've already played.
Playing Yakuza 3 - 5 back to back a few years ago has completely ruined my interested in doing side-content in games. Now when I run into minigames, bland side quests, etc. I give them maybe 5 minutes. If they don't show that they are tied to some sort of story within that time, I will simply drop them and focus on main story again
I dunno what happened to my comment do i will write it again. Congrats on the engagement and the house. Hope you are able to navigate discussions so they are more satisfying fof you and you dont get dogpiled (not that i am blaming you, seeing it in real time wasnt pleasant). I do think accurately translating Vivian's story was a great thing and a change that should be applauded. If you ever get back to kirby i wonder how you will talk about that series' remakes, same with pokemon.
I just got to the final chapter of 1000xResist over lunch break, and wanna finish it when I get home tonight. Aaaaaa just hearing you mention it makes the wait harder, haha
The topic of remakes was relevant to me this year, having played far more older games than newer ones. I bought a New 3ds late last year, and have gotten tons of use out of it, playing a lot of games in series I'd only gotten into during the switch era. I actually finished my semiannual replay of the Xenobalde trilogy this year, and had my best runs through each game. The played the 3ds version of XC1, and weirdly found it to be my favoite version. It is by all accounts the most compromised of the three Xc1 versions, but the game felt right on 3ds in a way it kinda didn't on wii or switch. Portable consoles are always gonna be better for huge rpgs, just in the sense of the time required, but Xc1 felt like a game designed for a portable system. The level design's way more linear, the UI feels more comfortable on the dual screens. But on the topic of remakes, having played the Wii and 3Ds versions, I really discovered how much of Xc1's identity is lost in the Definitive Edition. DE absolutely has the best models and more practical UI, but the UI itself is so stripped bare of personality and charm. The original has this rustic, literally rusty aesthetic, where as the DE is just... grey. XC1 is my least favorite of the trilogy, but I think I lacked a great deal of context before playing the OG versions. the remake is the most practical way to play Xc1, but it lacks so much of the soul and charm of the original in a way I have a little trouble putting into words. Having played TTYD this year, I still haven't finished it, and don't know if I will. I played Mario Rpg's remake last year, and that game actually made me cry at the end. It wasn't a deeply profound story, or a game I have any nostalgia for, but something about the ending just filled me with so much joyful catharsis, I couldn't help but cry. TTYD just wasn't giving me any of that. I got completely burnt out on it around chapter 5 or 6, and haven't touched it since. I just don't think Paper Mario really gels with me in general. I've been playing Brothership very casually, but that game feels closer to what I'm looking for in a Mario Rpg. I finally played Majora's Mask 3d this year, having put it off, having not really liked OOt and out of fear about the time limit system and how stressful it sounded. Ironically, that system ended up being one of the reason MM is now one of my favorite Zelda's ever. That game felt so right to play, and felt like a night and day experience from the rough edges of OOt. It really was kind of shocking how much more mature and refined Majora's Mask felt, considering it was a famously rushed game made with OOt's assets, on what was essentially a dare. Having played echoes of Wisdom and replayed totk this year, I think Hyrule and the standard Zelda narrative structure have reached their peak. I think the series is need of another game like Majora's Mask, with a new Setting, new Characters, new Narrative structure and new Mechanical goals. I'd love to see a Zelda game center around something as creative as the timeloop again. I played a bunch of pokemon for the first time, having started with and adoring Legends Arceus. I played Omega Ruby, X, Ultra Sun and Sword and ironically, despite most of those being the least popular pokemon games, I had so much fun with them, and Finally got what pokemon was really about mechanically. When I went to replay Violet, a game I hated on release, I found I was having a really good time, finally having a better sense of what the typical pokemon gameplay loop is supposed to feel like, despite gen 9 still being probably the most technically flawed of the lot. For one thing, Having played more games, I had way more favorite pokemon, to actively seek out and add to my party, Noivern in particular was a main stay in nearly all of my final parties. I tried the Gen 4 remakes, but just couldn't get into them, and I bounced off gen 5 really hard, and came to the conclusion I just wasn't into Pokemon for the same reason most of the fanbase was. I think the only two new games I actually finished this year were Echoes of Wisdom and Shadow Generations, both of which I loved. But for me, I feel like this was a year of catching up on what came before I got into gaming and broadening my horizons. Part of that is just the lull between switch generations, but I think it's also me having a much stronger sense of my tastes in games, as I've played less and less games per year for the last two or three.
My biggest lesson i learned this year is that: Absolute freedom in video games means the game design is impossible to balance. People get so caught up with "mUh PlAyEr FrEeDoM" that they just ignore how bad it impacts the game Shadow of the Erdtree made me question if I even loved Fromsoft games anymore, then I played DS2, then I just realized the open world added nothing to the dark souls formula
Felt crazy for not being as in love with SoTET as everyone else seems to be. I loved Elden ring but I think I love bloodborne, and DS1 more and always will.
@@hass556 can’t disagree more, tears of the kingdom didn’t take advantage at all of its open world design, and felt like botw with all of its care ripped out of, leaving a hollow husk behind with no thought in its work. Elden ring for being a gargantuan game as it is, actually felt like it took the open world design approach honestly stronger than botw if I’m being honest. Though I prefer linearness of the previous games more.
Balatro taught me that 1/4 probability is lower than you'd think
Nope!
Nope!
Pokemon taught me that 75/100 accuracy FEELS like it misses 3 quarters of the time
That damn level up never happens man
Congrats on the engagement and the house.
but most importantly, on playing video games 😂
Yeah a house, haha what a cool thing to own in our Climate Change era we live in. You never hear people buying private flats on here, or buying into a Housing Cooperative, interesting isnt it?😐😐
None of the other stuff tho
@@aturchomicz821 Damn you're a sour 16-year old. What is "on here" anyway? How do you even know what he bought and where?
Climate change?@@aturchomicz821
Balatro taught me to never quit, baby. Next time for sure, just one more mortgage, I swear.
Absolutely
My game of the year 2024 is 100% KH2 and lookin forward to running through every Final Fantasy in 2025!
dude are you me. this was straight up my experience too. kh2 absolutely rocks!
I'm like the opposite, I rarely play new releases, I just keep replaying my faves. No time to experiment 😂
Well they are old to you, but new to many so there is always value to re releases so don’t be so pessimistic.
My favorite TH-camr of 2024
I’ve learned a lot about writing for games from your videos
Remakes are helpful for people who weren't around for the original release. Unless you want to pirate/emulate, playing Thousand Year Door before the remaster can be quite expensive and isn't very accessible.
Ended up picking up and playing 1000xResist from this video, I’ve finished it about an hour ago. What an incredible game and story, thank you for your recommendation.
Skydeep Cenote! Good choice!
You don't realize what a strong tint those rose colored glasses are until you hear someone else say "oh man those chunky pixels in Pokemon Red + Blue are so outdated"
So yeah It's a chance for new gamers to ease into a game that you also like.
Love how the thesis of this video is essentially “journey before destination”. Welcome to bridge 4 !
I don't agree at all that remakes are not interesting to talk about. You're probably just burnt out trying to force yourself to like something you don't, or play something you are not vibing at the moment. Time is finite but it does not mean that playing a remaster/remake/old game is more "productive" than playing a new game.
It is "for me." And that's what all of these videos are about. I am not speaking for anyone but myself.
@KingKlonoa sure of course, this year was also not the best for arguing in favor of games that deserved to be remade or remastered so I can kinda understand your sentiment at the moment
Thanks for a great year KinkK. Aways excited for your videos.
I was introduced to your channel from your Black and White Retrospective. Your writing, analysis, and passion had me hooked and I have been watching video after video ever since. Always with appreciation for your craft.
Congrats on the engagement! Looks like you got your queen and castle coming in the new year!
Happy New Year, KingK. Tha ms for all thr videos
(The same thing happened to me in your Paper Mario Sticker Star video where you showed footage of the final TTYD boss, but maybe I should expected that in a Paper Mario video...?)
I love listening to your videos while I work, and they would be even better if the gameplay displayed didn't contain endgame stuff. Or even a spoiler warning at the beginning would help.
Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Another amazing video as always KingK
Almost every time you upload you capture the exact same things I have been feeling too.
Great video as always. The completionist mindset is a hard one to get away from. I appreciate hearing your struggles with it.
XD
Also, like what the other comment said, congrats on getting engaged and buying the house!
Daryl Talks Games has a video on completing every side quest and losing time on them. It's worth a watch.
been loving your content for some quite some time now bro thank you so much for all the great work!
Hope you have a great new year brother🙏looking forward to hearing more about your passions, along the way.
Weird that two of my favorite youtubers picked up Way of Kings at roughly the same time, but I'm not complaining
Congratulations on your achievements!
You echo my thoughts on Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth exactly. And although it sucks you didn't enjoy it, it's nice to hear an opinion that isn't simping over it. Congrats on the house and engagement too, dude!
Hearing my favorite youtuber got engaged and bought a house is amazing. You’ve helped me get through a lot. Happy to hear you’re winning in life.
Often, a passion turned profession will eat away at the host; passion succumbing to necessity. Some call it maturity. I call it a slow death. Invert the trend, let necessity give way to passion. Happy New Years
Happy new year kingk, I’m glad your playing dragon quest I’ve been playing DQ3 and I love it. Can’t wait to play a lot more from it.
Once I gave up on the idea of being a completionist, I've started to enjoy gaming a lot more. It started with Breath of the Wild. There was no reason to hunt down every single shrine and korok seed other than to "check a box"
And it makes the 2nd playthrough much more exciting because I still hadn't seen everything the game offers
Also started reading Stormlight Archive in 2024! What a great series of books... I'm glad it got me back into reading.
I'd be interested in hearing thoughts on Xenoblade 3 as well, so I'll look forward to that video in the meantime!
congrats on engagement and your house.
And you played Elden ring too.
Regarding the last part I'll watch anything you put out.
good video
Great video King i love your videos and congrats on your engagement.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I will be waiting ever patiently for the Xenoblade 3 review. As someone who appreciates the series as much as I do, your opinion on it is and will be incredibly valued. Especially for a story that’s as… remarkably topical as its story is.
Congratulations and im thankful for the joy youve added to my life see you in 2025 my guy take care
Games I played last year include:
Inscryption
Furi
Undertale
Oxenfree
Pineapple on Pizza
Here's hoping 2025 is just as good or better!
Maybe engineering school was a bad idea, I'm nowhere near buying a house yet but this guy's the same age as me and bought a house this year.
Clearly this means I should play more video games 🧠
Congrats on the engagement though! Big W, much love to the future QueenK
well, not to make assumptions with "QueenK".... Future Monarch-Consort K?
she's a queen!
@@KingKlonoa Fuck yeah she is, happy for you both
👉😎👉
Have a happy new year my guy. I hope ya can continue to do what you love, as well as have a work/life balance. You got a bright future ahead of you.
Btw, have you ever thought about doing audiobooks? Cuz you have a great narrator's voice. Just curious.
Finally somebody understands “GOTY” and “What was my favorite game this year I played regardless of year release!”
This was my first video of yours thanks to algorithm randomness, definitely following for more.
Congrats on the engagement!

Would love to hear how much you've enjoyed your steam deck, mines really helped find actual time to game as an adult
I’m so glad to see dread delusion get some credit here. It’s such an amazing game, and it would be very easy to miss
If you've picked up reading again, you simply must read Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling. It has influenced me more than any other piece of narrative has, and it is a truly astounding book. Based on your tastes in games, themes and narratives I believe you would cherish that book as much as I do.
Make what you like or want to make. I've been watching them all anyways. Happy new year.
You don’t like Nine Sols 😞😞😞?
Just so you know; this never showed up in my Sub-Box; I only found out of pure curiosity if you uploaded.
Hope you have a good year :)
I'll just emulate 3Ds stuff
As a fellow RPG enjoyer, I too find that I don't have unlimited time anymore. Gotta pick and choose my battles. Metaphor was a great timesink.
Just found your channel. Instant subscribe, hopefully that help adds a few dimes to the bank (we don't have pennies in Canada).
My biggest lesson i learned this year is that:
Absolute freedom in video games means the game design is impossible to balance.
People get so caught up with "mUh PlAyEr FrEeDoM" that they just ignore how bad it impacts the game
Shadow of the Erdtree made me question if I even loved Fromsoft games anymore, then I played DS2, then I just realized the open world added nothing to the dark souls formula
Same way for me after tears of the kingdom, the open world formula really didn’t add anything in the grand scheme of things
Felt crazy for not being as in love with SoTET as everyone else seems to be. I loved Elden ring but I think I love bloodborne, and DS1 more and always will.
Can't agree, at all
@@burritobison7700tears of the kingdom is built around the open world. Elden ring is dark souls plus botw.
