Plane geekery! We hopped in our 2001 Ford AU Fairmont to drive to Birmingham Airport. Why? Because we wanted to see an Airbus A380 takeoff - the largest passenger plane in the world. There are about 90 of them worldwide.
Also contains Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s. Our viewing spot was Sheldon Country Park.

Perfectly happy to see the occasional train and plane on the channel.
I travelled on the A380 from brum to Auckland via Dubai...you wouldn't believe how smooth the take off is, a cracking flight with Emirates..
You'd have been better off staying in dubai, Auckland is a toxic hell hole, in fact all of new Zealand is!
your right ,visit family 2 times a year its the only way to fly
I done the same only from Auckland to Dubai, very smooth and even though there was a bit of turbulence, felt nothing.
i flew SQ A380, the trim was about as rattly as other BL car on the land lol but once airborne its pretty quite
although the flap noise is very loud
Brilliant video, love planes! Easy to forget how old some of these are now. My late uncle was an aviation fanatic and took me to see the first UK landing of the 747 on a test flight in late 1969, will never forget it.
Not the content I was expecting, but entertaining none the less.
Dutchie here. KLM has waved out the 747 too, after Covid. PH-BFV and PH-BFW last flew on october 25, 2020. Both have been sold to Longtail Aviation.
Martinair Cargo, a subsidiary of KLM Group, still flies 4 Jumbos in Freight config, three leased from KLM (PH-CKA, CKB and CKC) and one in ownership (PH-MPS).
Great to see Betty is still going strong. I have a soft spot for her.
I remember watching the original A380 F-WWOW at Farnborough taking off around 2004/2005.....quite a spectacle!
Love Farnborough, spent time there when I was a kid.
Best experience at the airshow was the Vulcan bomber fitted with the Concorde motors Olympus, I believe. Low pass along runway.
The plane I most loved to watch taking off, back in the days when they were still airworthy, was the Avro Vulcan. The noise it made was mightily impressive.
Yes, saw that fly three times.
...now, THAT was a loud plane! Saw one a couple of times at the Abbotsford, BC airshow, ca. 1980-81..."Oh, there'll be square eggs in the old henhouse tonight!" was the announcer's comment when the Vulcan roared overhead...
@@craigmclean8260 If you were stood anywhere near it on take-off, the vibrations from the sound would cure your constipation!
Probably the loudest plane I have ever heard. As the engines spooled up it just got louder and louder and just when you thought that was it, the pilot would release the brakes and really open the taps. Your ears would start crackling and you would feel your guts vibrate.
@@mickfoster7140 I loved it when they would do a low level fly-by and then hit the loud pedal. The howl of those engines has never been bettered.
First jet I went on was a Yugoslavian B727 where you entered through the rear of the plane now that was a noisy plane. Love the footage of planes HubNuts, makes a nice change.
Planes, trains and automobiles. What a great film. An A380, that that comes from the ground.
You both are totally daft, and that makes you so much more relatable. Thanks Ian and Carly for showing us that you can, even as "adults", just say "we are going to do this now just because we want to", and it's so liberating. Keep it up! I really enjoyed this.
We've a good spot here in Melbourne for doing that, and I've been doing it for many decades. It's sort of a shame (just for the plane watchers) that planes don't roar like they used to. Another part of the experience that's been engineered away is wingtip vortices, which got 'fixed' by the upturned winglets. It used to be that about 20 seconds after the aircraft passed, the vortices would reach ground level and swirl and whistle around the plane watchers - a very strange thing it was!
Years ago I worked in the aircraft manufacture industry in Australia and we built the intermediate and shear tied wing ribs for the 757. It was an interesting process that started with an F shaped 7075 alloy chord that was stretched then heat treated and then milled in to shape by a five axis milling machine. We even made parts for the Boeing 929!!!
Flew on a BA A380 from Heathrow to Los Angles back in 2015, best flight I’ve ever been on! Massive and massively impressive bit of kit.
It was nice seeing him again. Steve Berry was definitely one of the better presenters of 'that' certain BBC2 motoring programme. He is so knowledgeable that he probably knows which model of Maserati that Joe Walsh was singing about in 'Life's Been Good'.
I love the A380, I have flown London to Sydney many times on one, the most comfortable plane I have ever flown
The 380's wing flex is nuts! We went on honeymoon to Oz & on the way out got a 747 on one leg & a 380 on the way back. Sat just over the back of the wing on the ground looked like a large silver hill, once we were airbourne it flexed so much I could see the wingtip! I like the smaller jets with the winglets, nice design!
Brilliant. And the size comparison of the two aircraft taxiing. Wonderful take off shot as the monster defies gravity. Seeing the Ford AU merrily eating the miles a true delight. Many thanks for sharing.
This is just down the road from me, I used to bike past the end of the runway to get to my nans house the otherside of the park. Suprised i didn't see an AU Fairmont rolling around.
Great to know that Mrs HubNut is a great knowledgeable fan of Plens!
love the variety of the Hubnut world. this is super content! Miss Hubnuts geeking out is so heartwarming
Love this. The A380 might not be pretty but she’s an engineering marvel. Flew on Emirates to Auckland and the lack of noise when you take off is bonkers.
Absolutely brilliant video ian miss hubnut ❤👍 thoroughly enjoyable seeing the planes takes me back to watching them at Manchester airport and I had a scanner to listen the pilots brilliant
Stunning, they just don't look like they're moving fast enough to generate lift do they?
Magnificent!
First time I saw a 747 was on a train out of Sydney: it looked to be hanging in the sky. There's a story that when it first rolled out, one of the people who'd been building it said "It'll never fly."
I always think the A320 sound is like someone sawing the wings off!
That was a good video. Great to see Miss Hubnut geeking out!
I saw the A380 prototype flying in the South of France when it was still in final development/testing. It looked so big in the sky, messing with the whole “very small/far away thing”. Now I’m under on of the main flight paths for Boston Logan. There are two A380s a day - a BA flight from/to Heathrow and a Lufthansa from/to Munich. Sometimes they’re overhead, but even from a distance they still look like flying villages.
Great to have a variation on content. We should appreciate the A380 for as long as possible. Surely the best aircraft both to watch and fly on if you get a chance to. Great filming.
If you were Jerry Dyer, Ian, you would be constantly shouting and almost fluffing and cuffing at every driver on the road 😂
I make bits for cabin heaters that go in Airbus A380.
Amazing to watch first-hand, like a flying monster clawing its way into the air.
I suspect theres a 'Suspend physics & disbelief' button in the cockpit somewhere 😂
Smashing, see you at the show!
Hubnut does planes! Great to see you both having such a nice time together.
Birmingham wa my local airport for most of my working life and I used to do the A380 flight to Dubai every three months on a Saturday afternoon. It's certainly a 'fun' place to land when there's a south-westerly gale blowing across the runway!
Incredible physics 😊
Great vlog. I’ll be flying in a BA 380 next month and I never thought I’d do that again. 😊
I remember when the A380’s were under development. I went to Iceland in holiday and our flight was slightly delayed as a grey A380 was landing in Rekyavik airport ahead of us. It had taxied up when we landed. They were testing high wind speed landings and takeoffs.
Funny my wife and I stayed in Birmingham to watch Peter Hook and the Light last week then we took caddy van to the Elan Vally to camp. I was driving past Newtown thinking Hubnut country!
Kept a look out for tiny Japanese cars doing tremendous speeds but you must have stayed at home that day.
A goosebump moment, Love the A380
The 380 is the best plane to fly in from an economy passenger's point of view. The 350 is close behind followed by the 787... All the rest...have lower cabin pressures and ..well just feel old and I avoid them for 10 hour plus flights if possible.
Like old cars I do like the older planes having good memories of flying DC8s 9s and 10s and the original 747s and original 737s..but in those days Auckland to Heathrow was about 5 flights.
DC9 between Canberra and Sydney was a stirring experience: I was a very nervous flyer in those days, and the take off felt as though it was at an impossible angle. Also travelled in the back of a DC8 a few times: very long, and I swear I saw the fuselage twist in mild turbulence.
I spotted that exact same take off while at work in Stechford.
Our work car park is a good vantage point for the flight path over Tile Cross, Kitts Green and Hodge Hill.
I used to work in Kitts Green! Back in 1996-7.
Flown on A380s a handful of times,, from 2014 until recently thus year luckily business decks , truly awesome quiet smooth plane
Always impressive to see these beasts taking off.
A380 all the way. We always choose our long haul by the 380. A seriously quiet and relaxing aircraft. Emirates are among the best.
Wauw that is a big plane. My appartement is on the twelfth floor right smack in the flight path of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. I can practically touch the planes ✈️ coming in. A few weeks ago I heard the Dutch Dakota Association’s DC3 coming in but didn’t bother to look to my regret because I later heard it was her last flight. She is no longer allowed to fly because of environmental reasons. Seen her before as wel as 747’s and A380’s they just pass by my window. 👍🏻👍🏻😋😃
I used to drive past Kemble airport quite often. During the pandemic I remember seeing many 747's lined up for retirement. A very sad experience knowing that they would be broken up. Hopefully some may be preserved and available for flight but the electronics are obsolete in many areas so continued flight may be difficult, the same happened with the Vulcan.
I do like a bit of plane action. Getting stuck in traffic with the coach on the M25 in bank holiday traffic afforded an hours entertainment including a BA 380 coming in to land right overhead. Passengers weren’t overly impressed but it broke up the monotony for me. Nice having RAF Leeming on my doorstep too especially since the coach company I do a bit of driving for backs onto the base. Wash ramp out back provides a nice, private viewing platform 👍
That was something different, guys...!!! As much as I love cars (and I DO!!) I ALSO love a bit of plane spotting!! Could this be the beginning of a new channel, I wonder, with the possible title of "HubNut & Bolt?!" I'd watch that channel!! 👍🙂
I was born in Sheldon, and have many happy memories of that park, though I don't remember it being called a 'country park' then! The A380 doesn't look that big from a distance, but if you stand near one, you realise that they are absolutely gargantuan aircraft!! I genuinely cannot comprehend how they become airborne, must be some magic or other!!😂
Airbus a380 are impressive but a boeing 747 is better in my opinion but still enjoyed this video
A 747 is certainly more graceful. Beautiful things.
As the saying goes, if it's Boeing, I ain't going. Too much cost cutting going on there
I am always amazed to see these massive planes take off, I am not a great flyer but just in awe of them.
An excellent video and great to see Betty feature.
Plane & Simple. Who wouldn't? Geekery is a solution to the humdrum. Aer Flingus ;)
Wow awesome
Love this. I'm quite an avgeek as well. I'm particularly fond of 777s, and especially when they're powered by those massive GE90 engines. Not only do they give the 777 a "muscular" look, being proportionately "too large" for the aircraft, they sound absolutely magnificent.
I had the pleasure of flying on an A380 to Dubai en route to Indonesia back when my life was normal (Happy family 😢)
And i get to see the end of the runway at Hawarden airport (Airbus) when i drive the train past it, "Beluga's ahoy" as you may say 😊
I remember seeing A380s coming in to land, when I was on a training course near Stockport, 2018. Certainly an amazing sight.
Here in flintshire north wales we see the beluga all the time in and out of airbus Broughton.
Yup, watched that last year.
@@HubNutAh but was it the ‘XL’ ?
A couple of weeks ago when I was on a Digbeth coach station run, I did see the A380 climbing out over the M5.
I've seen it a few times, including F-WOWW on one of it's trial flights when I saw it emerging from the murky skies above Avonmouth, after she did a fly pass of Filton
I also did the Toulouse factory tour several years ago.
Amazing aircraft.
The A380 is so comfortable even economy class is great, Jet2 are replacing the 757 with A321 neo's and the Boeing pilots are re-training for the new airbuses.
Such a nice video! I do like a 320 and A380.
A380 is bigger than 747. Klm retired last of its 747, sadly.
Nice one mate you were stone throw away from me if i known could have called you in for a cup of tea 😊 nice video👌
Great to see how much more excited Carly was than Ian ... No surprise you'd be excited, the A380 is an impressive machine!
If 'how does flight work' is of interest, there's a book called 'The Simple Science of Flight' by Henk Tennekes ... Honestly, it's a really interesting read ...
This could be the first Hubnut video I've fallen asleep watching.
I'm now going to try again.
First? I'll take that as a compliment.
@@HubNut Please do!
The 757 was a great plane, a staple of charter airline fleets through the 90s and beyond. I flew on them a few times with Monarch, Britannia etc for ski holidays from Bristol and Birmingham back in their heyday.
Birmingham Airport is home to the company that is commissioning one of the RAF’s new Boeing 737 Wedgetail AWACS planes coming into service… there are some TH-cam videos about it….
Absolutely delightful video. Very happy to see planery on the Hubnut channel. And had no idea A380s flew in to Brum. Champion
another great video has always Ian and Carly miss/mrs hubnut and hublets and hubmutt 👍
I grew up round there, spent many hours in that park as a kid, occasionally watching the runway too. Our house was right in the flight path for the airport, the planes came in ridiculously low, always looked like they were going to clip the roofs of the houses on our street.
Forgot to mention, I was out on my bike when I was around 10-ish and Concorde came in to land, absolutely deafened me but it was an amazing sight.
I flew on a Virgin Atlantic 747-400 back in 2008 on a school trip to New York. Probably my favorite plane I've flown on, more comfortable than the British Airways 777-200 I flew on to America in 2022.
Really cool, but the coolest was when the Space Shuttle flew over the house piggybacked on the Nasa 747!
I've been on a few A380s since my sister moved to Queensland. I love them. Great for a long haul, especially upstairs ;-) That said I went on a 787 this year, and had noticeably easier jet-lag when I got to Oz.
On the 737 vs A320, I'm team Airbus. Much smoother. 737s seem to change direction more sharply, which can be less comfortable.
Wow the A380 is a monster
Great video
Amazing to watch. Strangely though even though I live close to the B/ham airport by the rear of the Land Rover factory we don't hear the aircraft that much. Only noisy planes seem to be the turbo prop planes.
Same here. I lived for a while on Damson Lane near the Rover plant, but hardly ever heard planes taking off and landing! Could actually hear the trains more, especially at night.
@2760ade strange you say that as I can hear the trains as well. My parents live the other side of the motorway in Bentley Heath and you hear both the trains and the planes.
@@bentullett6068 I think the sound of trains must really travel!! Bentley Heath must be on the flight path then? I know it well by the way, used to drink in the nearby Drum and Monkey, (don't know if it is still there) and as nerdy train spotters, me and my mate used to hang around the level crossing! 😂
@2760ade the planes fly over Barston and Hampton in Arden and occasionally have to loop around Bentley Heath if they have to que for landing.
Ian, Consider yourself chastised, Betty is not wide, She is Generously proportioned.
I too am an aviation nut. You are both well versed in terminology and use your on line resources. It is beautiful to see that this an interest you both can share together. Beautiful Videography! Please share this anytime!
Ive flown on A380’s many times when I was working overseas in a certain hot and sandy place. Used to fly from Manchester with Emirates usually on a Sunday afternoon. From a passengers point of view they are just like any other jet. I couldn’t never tell what kind of jet I was in to be honest. On take off you could watch the view on the seat back TV from a camera mounted on the tail which was quite interesting.
AY UP MR AND MRS HUBNUT
Definitely don’t mind plane content. My daughter starts commercial pilot training with BA in January so it’s all of great interest🙂
First time I'd seen an a380 was back in 07, almost missed it as it is so quiet on takeoff
Flown on the A380 several times , very quiet considering it's size , oodles of power and it defies gravity on takeoff effortlessly
Love the "plane-geekery"!
Nothing wrong with a bit of Plane action on the main channel, especially when it's something special like an A380.
Saw it at Farnborough once (around 2004/5 I think) and it was mind-blowing how something so big actually took off. It was a complete contrast to the Stealth Bomber at the show that was tiny compared to what you expect, both impressive machines for totally different reasons.
Super-impressive, these planes taking off. And of course a beast like the A380 is fantastic to see. Another plane I love (I'm old) is the original 707. A beautiful design.
We had the a USAF KC-135 at SYD airport a couple of days ago - the KC-135 is the Military version of the 707 and is used for in-flight refuelling. Lot's of coverage on Sydsquad channel.
@@iboswell Thank you! Will certainly check it out.
@@alpcns You actually get a takeoff and landing as their mission to escort a couple of F-22s was cancelled mid-flight so the end of the stream sees it land at SYD again. I believe they finally departed 24hrs later and presumably the 2 F-22s are now back in Guam with their fuel buddy. The F-22s were over for an event in August up at Williamtown airport. Presumably the runway there is too small for a fully loaded KC-135.
@@iboswell Great information, thank you again!
A thought on the "minimal liveries", it's very likely to be them weight-saving, because the paints and stickers and all that add up, so for smaller planes or short flights, every bit of weight they can shave off is extra profit, I think it's why American Airlines used to just go in the noodles with their shiny bare metal look, less paint, less weight... :)
Fun bit of plane-spotting! The A-380 is certainly impressive; there's a plane-spotting video, taken one snowy night, w/ quite a few of these beasts taking off from Heathrow; almost spooky-looking...Kind of hard to imagine that they're retiring the 747s; when I began at Boeing in 1988, the 747-400 was still in flight-testing, to be first delivered to the now-merged w/ Delta, Northwest Airlines, in January, 1989.
The planes are certainly much quieter nowadays; even the A-320s no longer make the characteristic howl when passing overhead (said to be from the aerodynamics/acoustics of the wing tank fuel vents); if an MD-80/90 goes over the house now, it sounds like a fighter jet. The best-sounding old-school planes to me were the earlier 747s (P & W JT-9D-equipped), the DC-10s (GE CF-6), and the Lockheed L-1011 (RR RB211), although the "topper", to me, is the early C5 Galaxy, w/ the GE TF39s...
A380 fuel consumption as quoted by Airbus is 78 passenger miles per US gallon or 3L/100KM per passenger.
Now, is that chock-a-block with all seats occupied, or what? Do Airbus say?
@BillMalcolm-tn3kq they don't.
Probably an average of typical airline spec.
Between 3 up and 4 up in Betty, then?
Mr Hubnut flashed on screen that Betty had gone through 400,000 litres of fuel, more than the capacity of the A380.
Given that the car has about 400,000 km on it, or a quarter million miles, I'd consider that galloping consumption at 1km per litre. Time for antibiotics and an inhaler me old son.
Probably Seabrook arithmetic error. Noted comparable number errors before which a moment's thought at the physical improbability of it would not have been voiced. 40,000 litres, yes, Betty's a drinker and that's about 25 mpg Imperial average.
The marvels of modern technology
Despite seeing it on a daily basis I'm still in awe of the a380 (We get a couple of 747 freighters a week at Birmingham at the moment).
Made a nice change. The stats are mind boggling, they should never be able to leave the ground. Saw Concorde leave Heathrow late 70s, straight over my car. Impressive. And noisy.
The noise reminds me of 20+ years living near Hounslow Central tube station. TBH it wasn't great fun, not a plane-spotter. But you transmit your enthusiasm well.
A380 engine diameter is roughly the same as a 737 fuselage profile.
Wow, dedication to big planes, there's a daily A380 flight to/from Glasgow, under normal winds I can watch it go skyward from the back garden
Yet again you were about 20 minutes from me! 😂 if I’d known, kettle would have been on ☕️👍
Back in the area again next week! Albeit stuck at the Airport/NEC for several days.
@@HubNut Yes! - the NEC show, of course! 🤦- Not to worry, looks like Chemmie is taking a break now? So paint correction skills maybe not needed there for a while. Will let you know if I'm over in your neck of the woods - will bring all the kit in case ☺👍
Airplanes, trains, and automobiles all have hubs and nuts soooo yes, no issues here. All good😊
Unless you're Steve Martin then maybe😮😊
Perfect vlog!
I'm not really into planes but the first time I went to Barbados I had to go and watch Concorde land and take off and I'm glad I did as there will never be a plane like it again
In the 90's my office was on the flight path for Heathrow. I used to stand in the car park to watch Concorde take off. Truly amazing and made one feel proud of seeing a BA Concorde take off.
3:46 sightseers enjoying the beautiful view 😅
I concur Ian.
Airbus all the way!
Nice to see some plane action, being a big aviation fan myself.Yes,G-LSAI was on you tube departing from Liverpool to Gatwick.37years old. Will be a shame to see her go (January then?).Nice job,and a nice change👍!
Planes, trains, automobiles or bikes. They all have Hubnuts!
Cheers all!
Why am I not surprised that you enjoy watching Petter on Mentour Pilot?
We recently flew on a minimum livery Jet 2 Airbus from Mahon to Stansted. It was not part of the Jet 2 fleet, but contracted in from another operator on their behalf.
Love the Flight Tracker App as can sit in our back garden in SE London and see the planes for Heathrow to the east, City airport is over to North plus private stuff going on a Biggin Hill plus with the Thames just down the road the shipping app is fun too.
A great day out a drive in Betty the AU Fairmont and plane spotting
