It could be the fan should keep running with the key out,to dissipate localised heat. I had a Kawasaki bike that done the same thing, disconcerting until I found out it was normal.
Yes, you're quite right, it is far from unusual for the cooling fan of a modern car to run after the car is shut down and the ignition key removed. This could, perhaps, be a warning sign that the issue with the low temperature gauge reading is actually a faulty sender and that the engine is running up to temperature. My reasoning being that a lot of vehicles use different temperature senders to operate the gauge and the cooling fan...
I remember these coming in for the first time when working at an MG/Rover dealer. We had a good look around it, as we hadn't seen one before, and one of the sales chaps said to the managing director "we're in trouble, aren't we". I remembered those prophetic words some months later when we got the news that Rover was going into liquidation. And that is why I've never liked the City Rover. I blame it for Rover's demise.

It is up to the seller to provide an up to date log book - no log book = no sale. As has already been discussed (at length, unfortunately!) Top Gear really ripped into the CityRover. It will be interesting to see if you can prove them wrong. 👍🏻 You have the advantage of actually knowing more about cars than any of them ever did.

Ian, if the car has an ecu/emu it could be a problem with the coolant temperature sensor. If the sensor is a bit sus and sending spurious inputs to the ecu/emu it may decide that it can't trust the reading and to safeguard the engine turn the fans on becauseit could be hot. Then when you turn the car off it keeps the fans on for a period to cool the engine down. Good luck

The cooling fan on my 2013 Ford Fiesta ran after switching off on two occasions... one time after a spirited drive over a hill that got up to about 1500 feet, and another time after a congested traffic drive on a hot day (38 celsius) It's normal for a lot of cars, and more so for ones built for tropical climates, like a TATA. My X type Jag runs the fan after ignition off, turned out to be normal after a long drive, don't worry about it but I would definitely change the stat.
Speaking as an aforementioned ‘short arse’ I thank you for the shout out! 😂👍
Short arses have rights Derek🤣🤣🤣👍🏻

Picasso's you can carry a C90 in the back
I remember about 15 years ago we needed a pair of rear wheel bearings for one of these. It took 3 weeks to get them because the dealer had to get them from India, when they came they were in the usual MG rover box and the races had made in UK engraved into them.
For the height of idiocacy, I've come across German products in Germany packaged in German packaging printed in Germany for the German market - so nearly everything in German - except "Made in Germany"
Seen similar thing with printed stuff - all in the local language except "Printed in...."
I recently bought a Volvo 480 ES for € 250 which was a pretty good car with six months of MOT left. It had some rust issues (bad accident damage repair in the wheel arch), needed a bit of tlc (none of them would be an MOT fail) and was screaming for a full service (brake fluid like coffee and cambelt 3 years overdue) and it also had a faulty thermostat, but it was so much fun to drive and even had 20 litres of petrol in the tank :-) Buying a generally unloved car (so unloved I have had five of them, LOL) that is fun to drive for so little money and being able to fix issues myself is what makes this petrolhead happy.
My 1.6 golf cooling fans run for a few minutes after taking the key out on a hot day
Amistech1995 I was just telling the wife I'm sure my old VW Jetta did the same thing.
Most vw Audi do
It’s normal
@@kevinjohnson1958 Yep my 1991 Jeta Turbo Diesel intercooler 1.6 does the same stuff when you turn the car off, Thermostat have been changed few months ago and its brand new so nothing wrong with it probably a engineering design, and it does turn the fan on quite often while hot or just in summer generally...
The cooling fan running post shutdown is perfectly normal - and is a feature designed to reduce "heatsoak" The fan will cut out when the temperature drops to a predetermined level.
Not when the rad is actually cold...
@@HubNut Depends where the sensor is sensing from - generally the block, which will be hot probably regardless of rad temp.
how did i get here..and how am i still watching after 12 mins??
Nice to see the subscriptions numbers steadily rising Ian. Well done for producing a thoroughly entertaining channel. I prefer the peace of mind that my newish supermini provides, but I do enjoy watching your exploits with older cars. Reminds me of my brother in his early days of car ownership. Never a dull moment.
Log book scam probably indicates a driveway 'dealer'. Trying to shift on the vehicle without anything tying it to them.
EgoShredder with a 12 year old Picasso?!
I'm used to crappy plastics. I've owned many french cars. That give me a giggle. Well done on the channel. Watching from New Zealand. Good viewing
Did you leave it for a few minutes? The fan may stay on a few minutes after running which may be normal, chances are the fan is controlled by a different temperature switch to the gauge.
Fan is controlled by the fan switch in the rad and gauge by a senior in the block as far as I know. Although it will be interesting to see how things work out this being a diesel converted to petrol built by Indians and sold to Hubnut....
He should have left the fan running to see how long til it stops as it's probably normal.
I like this one. She looks quite nice, and seems maybe there is nothing fundamentally wrong. So a good deal, and good entertainment whilst you sort out the glitches.
Nice one Ian. I am thinking the thermostat and electric fan issues are connected. Good luck!!!
Although it was inevitable for so many years, it’s sad to see Longbridge with the factory gone and all this modern non-industrial cobblers appearing in its place.
A great caper 👍 Good old British industry always to little to late. I wish second hand car were as cheap here in NZ becaus we have always paid way to much.
Cars are cheap as chips in the U.K. are they still expensive in N.Z??
McPugg you think your second hand cars are expensive in NZ? Come to the United States and see what you get for $250.00 USD. 😭
@@matty6848 afraid so people here still have the idea that we are a long way from the rest of the world so prices stay high. E.G. 25year old Toyota Land cruiser with high mileage 18,000 NZD

CauliflowerMcPugg I think your right there. I’ve been to Australia but not NZ however my cousin lives in NZ and pretty much describes the same to me that NZ almost has a inferiority complex about itself and standing on the world tech stage which is daft of course because NZ is up there with any nation👍🏻

Retitled by Hoovie "I purchased the cheapest Rover CityRover in the UK."
Wizard stops working on the Viper and phantom to tackle issues on the metro......
Hoovies an idiot by the way.
Although we have several Rover dealers here in Southern California, I don’t think this car was ever sold here. As other people have commented, on some vehicles, the fan will stay on for a short while with the engine off, I’ve had motorcycles that did it.
Ian, what's happened to the updated one's that were shipped over during the bust? They must still be in existence do you think?
I've seen an urban exploration video hete on YT in which some guys entered an old Rover plant. Inside were still a number of brand new Rover cars legt to collect dust. Some had a bright yellow paintjob.
I doubt anyone can get those cars registered for a license plate and ownership documents.
They dumped them in the sea and turned round to go home.... JK
Didn't one of the car supermarkets buy a job lot of them and sell them on cheaply?
@@jfv65 the bright yellow ones will have been MG versions
@Sam Eyers yeah, you're right. They were resold by motapoint IIRC for a few grand less than they were sold at by rover (the price they ought to have been sold at)
Had a Toyota Tercel with a leaky tank, only took half so was forced to carry a can at all times. Wish I still had it.
Cheapest I bought £50 for a type 2 VW bus with twin sliding doors, towed it back and started it with ten minutes of key twiddling.
£25 worth of welding and two brake pipes and through a test. Wish I still had it.
Cheapest with a test and tax, £90 for a FSO Polenz. Wish I still had it. Cheers
For me £200 car £2000 insurance ffs 🤦♂️
My BMW 325 used to keep running the fans for a while after the ignition was off. Wasn't an issue at all.
Excellent sheep comment on the Citroen. I am sure it said Blurrrahhhhhhhhhhhh :-)
Not had a good collection caper for ages! This is a real treat! Didn’t expect one til after the Hubnut international tour😂👍👍
That haircut is having a very unsavory influence on you Ian
I've done that. The black Astra SPORT you saw me in at the meet in The Lakes was a car I paid £200 for. It wasn't in as good a state as it is now, but moderate spending & determination pays off. It's bloody quick since I had the new clutch fitted.
At last! Someone else that buys a motor sight unseen.
...we are in need of professional help. I still regret the 55plate Kelisa after a drunken Ebay click.
I never buy cars unseen but when I arrive I've basically made up my mind it's coming home with me. Bought a few lemons over the years but I do love tinkering (the wife calls it playing). Still better than spending it in the pub.
I've only bought one car unseen, a £250 Chevrolet Matiz yesterday off a certain online auction site, but I've always made up my mind within seconds of seeing a car.
ahh a Kelisa, that's a "Perodua" right...? :-P
Good luck
HUBNUT, WHAT IS GOING ON YOU ARE GETTING BETTER LOOKING EVERY VIDEO, A VIDEO ON YOUR DAILY GROOMING RITUAL PLEASE, NO I AM NOT GAY, BUT A LIGHT SUPPER AND A RIDE OUT IN ONE OF YOUR CARS, AND WHO KNOWS, NO PROMISES THOUGH.
“we’re not lendin that to you matey” - Some person from Rover
Looks like you dodged a bullet by walking away from the Citroen
If you ever have any nagging doubts about a car no matter how much it is or what a great deal you think it is just walk away
Trust your gut
City rovers are sweet my sons first car , well done.
I had the use of a Tata Rover -The worst car ever!Awful!
My friend's wife got a Chevy spark for £250. As far as I can tell it's in good condition. After getting the suspension struts changed
Love traction engines bet it smelt awesome! The City Rover is a good car and a steal for £200. Great find HubNut!
I love that you are into indicator sounds. Been that as long as I remember. I'm not alone. Awesome!
The cooling fan on my 2013 Ford Fiesta ran after switching off on two occasions... one time after a spirited drive over a hill that got up to about 1500 feet, and another time after a congested traffic drive on a hot day (38 celsius)
It's normal for a lot of cars, and more so for ones built for tropical climates, like a TATA. That's why there are warning labels about the fans running at any time, and it's recommended that the battery be disconnected when working under the bonnet
Awful cars, but no problems with depreciation, as long as it works, it’s a gamble worth taking. Great stuff!
Cool video. Some of the mk2 or facelift or whatever you want to call them did actually sneak in to the country. They were all purchased by a big car supermarket and sold off as new cars with a 3 year warranty.
For one awful moment I thought I was suffering a reality inversion and you had actually bought the Picasso not the Rover ! Phew what a relief. Forgotten camera mounts replaced by a seat wedgie instead - brilliant and typical HubNut. Best 25 minutes of a bank holiday Monday ever.
I borrowed one of these for a couple of weeks back in 2008, the car was only about 2 yrs old at the time but all in all it wasn’t a bad car.
Hi Ian I'm lay in bed just watching you drive past my old senior school on the Bristol rd as you were heading to the m5 I now live in Yeovil and am astonished to see my old stomping grounds on one of your brilliant collection capers what a small world we truly live in hey?
