38:00 when you counted the tracks to get a card, was something that got us stuck. I thought Ticket to Ride was so hard. The Mysterium was my favorite, after Clutches of Hades.
Spoiler Alert: on card 33 is says out of control locomotive. On the back of each card are coloured wagons like in ticket to ride. There is however 1 card that instead of a wagon has a locomotive on it. Which is card 20. Thats how u could have guessed which card to take.
Really enjoying these videos! Based on this one, I gotta say I prefer the Exit games. About the chloroform, she used it to knock out the engine driver. It's a hint to what she's planning to do. And regarding the part you were stuck on with the decoupling of the cars, the card told you that she was on the part of the train that was slowing down, hence the non-locomotive one. The card showed 14, 15, 16 (one car), 17 (one car) and 18 (connecting piece) all being removed, which means those two cars (and the rest of the train) were decoupled. You were in the car represented by card 19, so the only way to the locomotive was the next number in line, which was 20.
Hi! Really glad you're enjoying the videos, and thanks so much for watching and commenting! I think the Exit games are better in general since I find them fairer, although the more flexible format no doubt helps. The Unlock games are much more variable in puzzle quality - the Star Wars Unlock box is the best, in my opinion. It's so interesting to get another perspective on the game. I can see you're right about the chloroform from a story perspective, although I was expecting to use it for a puzzle like the other photos. And you're also right that it tells you which part of the train you're on, so we were wrong on that. I was convinced that 17 and 19 must be parts of the same car, but obviously not. I think using the card sequence 14, 15, 16, B (the bar - not in the solution hint), 17, 18, 19 to predict 20 as definitively the train is a bit dubious since it could equally be 21, 22 or higher, BUT the fact that card 20 is the only one with a [rainbow] picture of a train on the back of it, as another commenter has now mentioned, makes it fine in any case - I didn't notice that.
@@drgareth When you were looking at the back of the cards I noticed the wild locomotive and thought that it might be the right card. I didn't even see it was card 20. I agree, I think that would've been a clearer solution to the puzzle if they gave you that explanation. You're right, I totally forgot about the B card being between 16 and 17. I see what they were trying to convey, but the execution didn't quite work out. I was trying to solve this one alongside you and I couldn't see the answer (except for noticing that locomotive, but I wasn't sure), so this was all looking back at the cards to see what they were trying to say with that solution. It was not a very clear puzzle. Anyway, looking forward to the next one! Be it Unlock or Exit (or whatever else), it'll be fun playing along. I give Exit the edge because of the lack of app and the use of 3D elements so far.
@@Walkdogger Yes, it was interesting doing this solve with the app - I wasn't entirely sure how well it would work on-screen, and you sometimes end up with lots of cards in Unlock which often also have small text. In fact what is less obvious from the video is that we had several extra cards on the table all the way through that we didn't keep on camera because I didn't think they were relevant... but you can never be entirely sure! :) I did set up an extra-high-up camera too but we didn't use it for this video. That's a good point about the 3D elements in the Exit games - I think it does make it more satisfying to be physically manipulating something, and it's probably a bit more visually interesting to watch too. Next week we're solving Exit the Game: The Secret Lab.
From what I could see, card 20 was the only one with the rainbow train card on the back. In ticket to ride, the rainbow card is the locomotive and is wild. Even the solution said a different way to figure it out, this is how I would have got the answer. That being said, I don't like that my way requires prior knowledge of ticket to ride.
You're quite right, and checking now I see it does actually say that in the printed solution that comes with the game even though the app doesn't mention it. It's funny - I've played Ticket to Ride many times and never noticed before that all the single-colour cards are carriages and that the rainbow cards are the train! :) Obviously I'm too focused on trying to win. ;) But it's a good point - that is a perfectly reasonable puzzle solution in its own right. If the in-app solution said that I'd have been much more satisfied with that puzzle at the time! :)
Yey! What a coincidence. I literally just got this same game 2 days ago!! 🥳 I'm not going to watch this video until I play it myself, but I'm itching to play it ASAP so I can watch it. I'm interested to see how I rank next to your two brilliant minds.🤯 puzzle people are my people! 😎
Good luck - I hope you enjoy it! Once you've solved it you'll have to let us know how you got on! I should probably add that prior to this video it had been a long time since I'd solved an Unlock game and I think it showed in this video - but I won't say any more so I don't spoil you! :)
@@drgareth surprising, some of the puzzles you were stuck on I got and some you got that I had trouble with. 😂 I did have some frustrations with the logic behind some of the puzzles as well, but it was overall entertaining. Can't wait for the next one.!!!
@@Hennaqueenbee Well done! You should clearly have been on our team! ;) We're going to do the Pandemic game from this Unlock box next week (although we have an Exit game coming up this week first), so it will be interesting to see how they compare - also I think I'll probably be better prepared for this style of game the second time round! I hope. :)
@@drgareth That's awesome! I can't wait! I obviously love the Exit games, after all, that's how I found your channel. I've done several, including the abandoned cabin and after watching your play through of it, I got the return to the abandoned cabin and am excited to play it. I'm also going to play Pandemic next and can't wait for your video! The fault in the ticket to ride game wasn't either of you, it was the game itself. You're both brilliant at puzzles! Until the next one, take care!
I'm glad to see someone else stumbled at the same points as us! Some of the routes you have to make felt like a bit of a jump! We're now concerned that the second and third in this box will prove problematic!
Glad it wasn't just us! :) I do think that the Unlocks in this box are more complex than previous ones, but we still enjoyed this and the Pandemic one. We're yet to try the Mysterium deck, however since neither of us have ever played the original game - although I'm sure that doesn't matter.
thank you for accompanying me to get confused together...well I completely agreed with your points especially about taking the card number 18 and 20...is like we hesitate whether it is right to directly take that card assuming that the card number is equivalent to the car's number....good job guys..I enjoyed watching it...
This was a hard game but one of the more interesting games of unlock. However, I think some of the rules to this and another unlock game I've seen are rather unfair.
Yes, I definitely think they can be (and too often are) unfair. I suspect they’d work slightly better as games if a non-playing friend read the solution first and could give gentle nudges in the right direction - such as “you need to take a card you haven’t been directly prompted to take”. In fact I don’t think it would hurt the game to have a symbol that indicates exactly that.
I just got a bunch of these Unlock!s recently; did well with the star wars one but was 65 minutes over with a group for the Sherlock Holmes 😭. Guess it's time to watch how it should be done... 😂
The Star Wars box is my favourite, and I think doing any of them in the target time is an achievement - they're quite guess-y but they also penalize you for guessing incorrectly which then discourages you from guessing... I have the box with the Sherlock game so I assume I've done it although I have no memory of it. I think the next Unlock we do we'll solve the Pandemic one, since I love (the board game) Pandemic, but next week is another Exit the Game, The Secret Lab.
I must admit I hadn’t heard of that, and if I had I wouldn’t have realised that sleuth mode referred to a solo play. :) It looks a bit complex for these videos, but if I one day run out of games to play I can give it a go. Do you recommend it? I read some reviews that made it sound like there is a lot of flicking through a booklet?
@@drgareth it isnt a "riddle" game Like the Exit or Unlock Games but a mystery solving Game. So ist more narrative driven. But I really liked it. And you do need to Flick through quite some Pages in the solo Mode but the haptic experience feels really nice. I played a Case with a friend and she didnt want to let Go of the booklet cause she licked flicking through the Pages that much (:
Yes, I definitely prefer the Exit games. My main issue with the Unlock games is that they don't define what's a valid use of the cards - per the rules you can't take a card (ever) unless you see an actual number, get it revealed via the app in some way, or combine a red and blue card. So it's never entirely clear to me what is cheating and what isn't, and I think if they could come up with some rational system that made clear what was and wasn't allowed then I'd enjoy them a lot more. :) But perhaps that's just me! ;)

It's more than a bit arbitrary in some (most!) Unlock games when you can take a numbered card and when you can't. The rules as stated, after all, do not permit this sort of thing at all! So I'm not surprised you got stuck on that. We thought it was really hard too. Meanwhile, I'm not sure if I've played Clutches of Hades or not but I do have all the Unlock boxes so perhaps I have. :)
