      You honestly think she’s enthusiastic about working on cars? You can tell she has no interest in it nor understanding of what she is actually doing. Her husband has to physically show her what to do and she just does it. Plus she sounds like she has half a brain the way she talks.

    Great repair, very well thought out and recorded. Haven't pulled a transfer case apart, hopefully never have to, but looks simple enough to do if I need to do so. Thought about pulling a spare T-case and rebuilding it just to have it, the 242's are getting a bit harder to find now since they're no longer in production.
    I like the selec-trac in my 98 ZJ....great for the times when you need a bit more traction but don't need part-time 4WD....I hardly use part-time 4WD in my ZJ, the snow's gotta get pretty deep for that LOL...between full time and the rear limited slip I can get where I am going most of the time.

    I could be wrong on this exact model but I believe many of those are supposed to be assembled without any gasket/gasket maker. I rebuilt a transfer case on a ram 3500 4WD diesel with the 6 speed manual and that didn’t have any sort of gasket from the factory. Upon reassembly I did research and found that no gasket was correct for that transfer case. Few months later it no longer leaks a drop! I replace the seal on the tail shaft as well since the original one went bad which leaked all the fluid out then caused the chain to bust apart and crack the case. Replaced the case and rebuilt the whole thing. Been good ever since then now

    Might want to take a peek at that chunk of silicone blown behind the diff at 3:28, still there before assembly at 5:33.

      In this particular transfer case...there are a few other methods, some use clutches, some use viscous couplers. The NP242 (Selec-Trac) 4WD system was great, it really was full time 4WD, unlike today's systems that only engage when traction is lost and can sometimes engage quite abruptly or other times not at all, or not enough.
      The NP249 transfer case (quadra-trac) in the 90's Grand Cherokee's had a viscous coupler that would lockup to send power in varying amounts to the front axle, it was in 4WD all the time, no 2WD, but did have low range...the failure point was that viscous coupler but when it failed you still had 4WD, just more of a part-time 4WD as the coupler would lockup and you'd have the tire scrub and hopping issues you'd find in a part time 4WD system.
      The NP247 used a progressive coupler that contained a clutch pack to vary the amount of power to the front axle...in this case it would be in rear wheel drive until traction was lost then it would progressively send power up front till traction was regained then revert back to 2WD.

    stronger springs on the fork and shift forward to reverse a few times and creep at idle. cross fingers and just leave it in full time when off-roading :)

    Is this TRANFER same as the chevy 2004 z71 when put it all together? I got a problem that Al the gear the rear and front shaft. When moving the shifter position by hand to 2wd I still see the front shaft moving too

    how many planets are in that 242? 3? 4? or 6?. about to rip one apart myself (grand cherokee 2003 w/6cyl and auto) debating getting a 6 planetary for little more strength around the shaft if there is not a 6 in there

      The NP242 is an NP231 with the added bonus of the internal differential to allow full time 4WD as well as part time, and low range. Love that selec-trac in my Grand Cherokee...although the NP249 that was in my previous Grand Cherokee lived to 232k before the viscous coupler decided it had enough, at least when it fails you still have 4WD, but its more of a part-time 4WD so making sharp turns on pavement just wasn't gonna happen very well...that Grand Cherokee saw a lot of offroad use so I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did before the thing started failing...it still ran and drove great and the current owner just did a transfer case swap and was back on the road with it pretty quickly and its still running around the valley 9 years later.

      Lincoln lock the rear and leave the front alone, he probably doesn't wanna be changing dana 30 shafts constantly
