  • In this video, Tom teaches our fellow RC enthusiasts how to use the new Avian Prog menu to program your Avian ESC right from your Spektrum Smart compatible transmitter. Follow along to learn how!
For written Update instructions, update download link, and programming charts GO HERE - bit.ly/SmartESCUpdate
-- New features covered in this video --
Added: Avian Smart ESC Programming via TexGen
➢ Change and save Avian programmable options directly from your Spektrum DX, iX or NX transmitter and Smart receiver. Enter the Avian Prog. menu on your Spektrum transmitter to review, change and save
programmable options that were once only able to be updated via the SPMXCA200 Smart ESC programmer or by using the SmartLink app. Use the aileron and elevator to navigate the menu and make selections.
    Added: “Reverse” Brake Type
➢ To use “Reverse” brake type select the option and then set a channel to activate the reverse thrust (option 15 on all Avian ESCs). When the reverse function is activated using the channel designated the ESC will cause the motor to stop
then spin in the reverse direction and increase with throttle input.
Added: “Governor Gain” (Heli Mode only)
➢ Controls how aggressively the governor maintains the set RPM
o Level 1 (less) to Level 3 (more)
Added: “Auto Restart Time” (Heli Mode only)
➢ Set the auto-rotation bailout timing
Added: “Restart Accel.” (Heli Mode only)
➢ Controls how aggressively RPMs are recovered
    Added: “Thrust Reverse Ch.”
➢ ** Requires Brake Type set to “Reverse” ** Select the channel that will control the reversing function
    **--- Some important notes ---**
    - This feature is new and may require a ESC firmware update - here is a video to learn how - • Avian Smart ESC Setup ...
    - ALL Spektrum Avian ESCs can use this feature with update. This Includes the 15 amp, 30 amp, 45 amp, 60 amp, 80 amp, 100 amp, and 120HV esc.
    - This menu will appear on ALL Gen 2 Spektrum DX transmitter, All iX intelligent Spektrum Transmitters, and all NX transmitters. You may need to perform a firmware update to gain access to the Text Gen menu for Avian Programming.
    - For access to this menu you will need to be utilizing a Smart Avian ESC and Smart compatible Receiver.

Conscendo Advanced to shorten the approach. Same for my Radian, which doesn't have spoilerons.
F-4 to shorten the rollout or for air braking.
My apprentice to back up on the water.
Of course it would just be nice to back up my P-39 and Cherokee.

Nice instructional video, thank you. Please add the first step to enter the Smart ESC Programming Screen. I found this part missing from your video and only reading one of your replies realized that when you said go to Telemetry, it was not the Menu item but a full thumb roller to the right before you can see the menu for SMART ESC. Once there my model set up prevented me from completing the steps because the stick movement no longer resulted in +100 / -100 registering to the programmer. So I set up a new model, fresh called "TEST" with no limits or trim setting and I was able to enter the menu and change the ESC successfully using the instructions in this video. Very cool. Initially I tried using the Stick Programming Method and it didn't work properly. I know this because I have used the same method to program 3 other manufacturers ESCs and theirs seem to read my inputs more precisely. Overall this is a nice way to quickly change ESC parameters on the fly, but you still need to set up a fresh model with no presets for trim or rates so that the stick registers -100 at one end and +100 at the other. HOPE THIS HELPS ANY OF YOU STRUGGLING WITH THIS. Scott

I just ordered the new E-Flite D-18 Beechcraft that has a Spektrum Avian dual 40 amp ESC ( SPMXAE0240A ). According to the manual it says you must program the ESC for Thrust Reverse with a Smart ESC Programming Box ( SPMXCA200 ). Your video says you can program any Avian ESC with a newer generation Spektrum radio. I have a new NX8. Can I program the Beechcraft D-18 for thrust reversing from my radio, or must I purchase the Programming Box to do this??, as stated in the manual. Thanks for your answer, I will watch for it.

    Love your videos Tom!
Considering using 2 of the 120Amp Avian ESCs connected to EFlight Power 180 Brushless Outrunners in the Hangar 9 OV-10 with 12S configuration. Plan to use AR20310T receiver. Is this receiver a Smart receiver? Do you recommend an alternative receiver?
Notice that this ESC does not support motor reversing. Is there an upgrade planned to include reversing on this ESC in the near future? If so, would both be assigned to the same switch on my Spektrum iX20?
All of my current planes and jets are BNF or PNP foamies. This will be first ARF. Trying not to wait till last minute to resource all the parts.

Hi Dexter. Thank you! :) Currently the Powersafe receivers DO NOT support Smart ESC telemetry... It is in the works but it may likely be a new receiver :( The largest channel count Smart compatible RX at this time is the AR8020T and AR8360T (8 Ch) but more are in the works. ALSO the ESC does support reverse thrust with our latest update for the esc. BUT you do need a Smart receiver to perform this function so until we have a receiver for your application it is kind of a moot point.

Well I managed to program thrust reversal on a twin motor plane with two 60 amp Avian ESCs. Both ESC were programmed separately with Rx slot 1 and then both were connected to Rx slot 1 with a Y connector with the red wire removed from one Y connecting to one of the ESCs. Cannot rely on the telemetry however, but no matter, I don't need it for that fast plane, just the timer alarm and voice on the aileron, elevator and rudder rate switches.

Is there anyway to connect this to the throttle for reverse on an airplane and run it like the collective / throttle on a helicopter so that mid point on the throttle is essentially 0 throttle, full up is 100 fwd (like normal) but as you cross the mid point it goes into reverse proportionally so that with the throttle stick all the way down it would be 100% reverse? • @SpektrumRCvideos

It stands for active free wheeling. Essentially it ramps down the rpm of the motor when the power is reduced to zero, encouraging the prop to keep free wheeling while in a glide etc.

    • @MikeSarni
      @MikeSarni 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ok so it was fine once you went back to 22ms? because I'm getting the air tractor today and I'm putting an avian 60 amp ESC in it I have the nx6 and I know you could change frame rate I wonder if it Just defaults to 22 ms though..... What radio are you using the new nx6? Because then that would explain the freaking out on the rudder and elevator sevos. There was a problem/bug with I think five or six air receivers where elevator and rudder would twitch every 10 seconds... definitely couldn't fly with it and it was like clockwork every 10 seconds 🤷‍♂️ anyway horizon hobby just actually came out with a release about a month ago and It fixed that issue for the NX series....took me a while to find this out but I had bought a new citation longitude EDF UMX and I couldn't use it because I had this problem ... After pulling hair out and doing a crap ton of research for a few days and buying new reciever/2 new servos, I actually found this out through research online and looking at NXseries change logs( December's fw did say that it was a problem)... I was pretty much done at this point because new parts didn't work I couldn't figure it out and then binding to my old DXE for shits and giggles it worked perfect🤦‍♂️o🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ s right then and there i knew it was software.... after the newest update it was good to go ....but yea I was initially bummed couldn't use my new aircraft it definitely sat for a good while 🙄

@@MikeSarni I am on a DX8 Gen 2 and it defaults to 11ms. That caused the glitch. The two servos in the Air Tractor are not the upgraded ones the Timber X has so they need to be set at 22ms.
