    I'd actually argue this is a case where I'd want to see these base game. Enhanced difficulty and strategy makes complete sense for a postgame, and makes the leaders actually meaningful rather than just EXP fodder before Red.

    • @RoryTheFiend
      @RoryTheFiend  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      yeah of course, not wanting this to replace base games "normal difficulty", but as a hard mode if the games ever had those.
      Using decent synergies and strategies should be standard in a hard mode, but also I think sometimes its nice to see gym leaders use strategies that arent necessarily top tier in their gen (gen 2 rain and sun teams) but from a perspective of having something different to fight against. I really appreciate things like that. Of course no matter what their levels are, they should be tougher to give any player some form of challenge.

  • @megariderfire1994

    I think it's fair you gave Mewtwo the objectively worst hidden power type (even at it's highest base power) and make it the lowest level member on Red's team. Considering Johto's level curve and the gap between Blue and Red being quite the significant gap...yeah it makes sense for the only legendary Pokemon on his team and level 75 would still be quite a grind to reach. That said, at least HP has no impact on the pokemon's special and speed DVs, so I'll give you that.

    Why not give all Gym Leaders full Teams of 6? They're Post-Champion Bosses. Why not give them full teams?

  • @TheLordGlenn
    @TheLordGlenn 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Giving Surge a Lanturn as other comments have noted would definitely be a good change to his team (and it can be fished in Vermillion City no less!), so I think dropping it from Misty to give to him is a good idea. What I didn't see suggested was giving Misty a *Qwilfish* as an anti-Grass option instead of Lanturn - she's pretty heavily Special-based with your 5-member team, so swapping Lanturn out for another physical attacker would balance things out a little.
    You could even tailor the sets slightly differently, going Lead Qwilfish (Spikes/Sludge Bomb/Swagger?/Surf - confuse the player to hopefully force a switch and take hazard damage) and swapping Sludge Bomb off of Setup Quagsire (Curse/Surf/Earthquake/Rest? (with a Mint Berry for longevity?)) to be something a little longer in the tooth, albeit with one less move making use of the boosted Attack from Curse?

    • @RoryTheFiend
      @RoryTheFiend  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah I can agree with everything you said here, I do also like qwilfish for the spikes lead, only 1 layer max in gen 2 but it's something rarely seen in game so appreciate the ai using moves not commonly used by them
      Thanks for the comment!

    Always a delight to see one of these. I love how intricately you go into giving them moves and great reasons behind the choices. It's something more people should do, especially when it comes to giving Pokémon teams to other established characters (giving Aquaman a mono-Water team is the biggest cop-out ever XD).
    Anyways, enough rambling. I might disagree with some of your choices in the series, but you're the guy who reminds me most of the way I like to approach Pokémon teams, and that's something I can't really say to a lot of people.

    The choices you've made were quite interesting... I would've given the starter's weakness choice for Blue instead of making Gyrados his "main" but it's fine anyway, overall.
    Mewtwo on Red is a nice touch ! Never thought about it before, personally...
    Little "complain" : i would've left an Ariados to Jeannine, even thought it's really weak on this stage of the game, i think it still fits a poison type specialist's team, but it's juste my opinion ^^

    Really loving this series, especially giving characters strong but underused pokémon (like Dodrio and Porygon2)!
    Although in that vein, I think it's a huge missed opportunity not giving Janine a Nidoqueen as her ace - I've always thought it was the best possible pokémon for her!!

    Qwilfish (w/ King's Rock) - Spikes, Toxic, Sludge Bomb, Headbutt
    Beedrill (w/ Scope Lens) - Twineedle, Sludge Bomb, Focus Energy, Double Team
    Weezing (w/ Pink Bow) - Explosion, Sludge Bomb, Flamethrower, Thunderbolt

    Nidoqueen (w/ Soft Sand) - Earthquake, Shadow Ball, Thunder Punch, Ice Punch

    I do think it's nice flavor to give trainers gimmick sets like Lock-on Zap-cannon as well as allowing the player to steamroll gyms with the right pokemon type (to reward them for finding and training up such a pokemon (as long as there's no lv 30 dugtrio in the vicinity, come on, gen 1)) AND it's always nice to give them unique pokemon (sets) that aren't all that strong. If you want a matchup against purely competitive teams, there's always the battle tower.
    Having said that, held items are tragically underutilized in -every generation of pokemon- gen 2's storyline and I agree they should at the very least be held by the ace.
    You also gave me an idea. Why not bend the rules even further and have Misty start off the game with a turn 0 rain dance? You can even have her or one of her trainers send out a pokemon in the overworld to do so (overworld shenanigans are yet another underutilized thing, Lance's ace wrecking an undercover Team Rocket member is a core memory for a reason). We can even have one of her trainers hint at this to reward players who don't skip them with surf.
    And then you can go nuts, give Erika a onesided sunny day that allows her to spam one-turn solar beams, Surge a one-sided rain dance, Brock a free sandstorm, Blaine a sunny day, Sabrina a free reflect or light screen (depending on the player's lead), and Janine a free way to poison the player's pokemon, either via proto-toxic spikes or by giving all her moves a chance to poison.
    All these things can be indicated via dramatic speeches and neat little overworld effects. We can also allow the player to defeat leveled up versions of those teams if they beat the elite 4, as such unique fights should probably be repeatable.
    Blue we can give yet another "not even my final form" moment (that we technically got in gen 1) by having him pull out a second team when you beat his first one. Because Blue isn't nearly mean enough, I think it'd be on-point not to let the player heal (and if they faint, they have to go through the first team again).

      Yeah Gyarados gen 2 was definitely its low point in the series, I dont get the moves game freak give and dont give to pokemon sometimes. If something can stone edge, it can definitely rock slide!

    Curious that you've used Rhyhorn's Yellow sprite in at least part of the Brock section.

    • @RoryTheFiend
      @RoryTheFiend  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The reason is simple, I downloaded the wrong sprite and managed to gloss over that fact while editing

      @@RoryTheFiend Ahah, yeah, that's what it looked like, although, since there was also the Gen 1 Geodude sprite alongside it, at one point, I thought "maybe there's a chance it's a stylistic choice I'm not seeing", lol; well, it seems like you caught it afterwards, since, iirc, the Gen 2 sprite is used in the overview of the team 😁👍.

      @@andreapareti324 Yeah aha, working on a 1 hour video over the course of 2 weeks it's pretty much inevitable for small things like that to fly under the radar for me

    Red's Mewtwo should hold the Berserk Gene. Is it stupid ? Maybe. But thematic. And pretty cool since this item is nowhere to see in the game.

      That's an interesting idea! In that case I'd need to give it another physical move like shadow ball, cool concept for sure

      Lanturn is a great Pokémon for electric types to give them a decent option for grounds, I can totally see those guys using one on their team
