I remember being in middle school and a saw a music video on MTV2 headbangers ball, was The Human Abstract - Crossing the Rubicon.
Loved that song, went onto a bunch of forums I was on and asked if there were any other bands who were like that.
Someone recommended PTH and I ended up liking them more.
    Good memories, good music.

Born and raised in Toronto and I’m beyond thrilled to see Protest the Hero get more recognition. These guys are absolutely Incredible and extremely underrated. I’m blessed to have watched their whole career since Kezia

How am I only finding this interview now?? PTH was thee band that got me into heavier metal. Fortress is still a 10 outta 10 album. I saw them play in the small city I grew up in Sask and it changed everything. Like yall said, if it wasn't for PTH, my journey through heavy music probably wouldn't look the same.

Anyone that ever asks about my top album, Fortress! Nothing compares. It’s just so so original sounding. Then when Palimpsest came out…. Wow. Anyways, I love you

Oh my god I'm so glad I found this podcast! Rody and protest is my favorite band ever! I was at the show in Newfoundland when the stage collapsed and haven't stopped listening to them since! I only wish they came back to Newfoundland for palimpsest, but hearing they are working on new things I'll fly to see them next time for sure!!! Much love from Newfoundland!

I lived in a small town in northern California and kezia literally blew my freaking mind. I remember running to show my brother the intro scream for no stars over Bethlehem.

Rody hasn’t changed in nearly 20yrs. Super cool guy back then in the early 2000s. I remember opening for these guys on small Ontario tours before Kezia. Those punk shows were sick at small clubs and halls in Cambridge, Kitchener, Guelph, London, Hamilton, Burlington etc…

I really really love what he says about PTH being about complicated music that is also fun and easy to listen to. Some riffs and sections are definitely tough to understand at first, but they often end with something simple and catchy for most songs so it's a nice journey.

Dude, Jelly King by Bellwoods Brewery - one of my favourites too. They a had a plum version once that was amazing.
Last PTH tour I missed the Toronto show and saw them the night after in Oshawa - it was a lot of fun but Rody was had his vocal chords really worn out so it was rough.
Really cool that you got to interview him!

Great interview! Always fun to see news about PtH. I've listened to them since 2007 and they've been my favorite band since 2010. I unfortunately haven't been able to go to a live show yet, since I was broke back in 2014 and they don't exactly play in Europe frequently.
Funnily enough, "the pitbull song" you're referring to is called "A Life Embossed", which is actually the only PtH song I don't enjoy listening to. Not because of the message, but rather it just doesn't really do it for me. Every other PtH song has spoken to me in some way, except for that one.
I definitely wouldn't say you deserve shit for it being political about something very specific however, but there will always be haters.

@15:05 Another band that I can think of that did that is Funeral For A Friend. After Memory & Humanity in 2009, they left their record label and then used the website Pledge to crowdfund their next EP, which is possibly some of their best material. When I saw PTH doing something similar, I realised that it was likely to become a more common thing over time.

I was surprised to hear that Rody is the punk of the group, his singing has always seemed very classic heavy metal to me. That said, I definitely have to listen to the latest record if they've been going back to that realm, Kezia and Fortress are by far my favorite PTH since i got into them because they're just so raw and aggressive.

He's right about what's going on in metal right now. As much as I love a lot of these licks & riffs these younger bands are making,a lot of the BLEGH stuff is all starting to sound alike now. As if you can't distinguish one band from another.
Hey,it happened to thrash and then death metal, then metalcore then Djent, then Slam and so on. It is the curse of sub-genres.

Not sure what part of the UK Rody has been to but poppers are the same here as everywhere else. Inhalant muscle relaxants, predominantly used by the gay scene, but also ravers. He's talking about bombs, when he says putting MDMA in a piece of paper (typically a cigarette rolling paper) and swallowing it. We call that bombing. It's fucking gross and at least 5/10 it will explode in your mouth before you've swallowed it and you'll taste the worst "flavour" imaginable. Nothing on earth tastes like MDMA powder. It tastes as bad as crack smells.
