Kezia is a fucking monster of an album. Damn near 20 years later and I still love it as passionately as I did when I first heard it. Yeah, maybe some of the transitions are more abrupt than they would do now or maybe they would have written things slightly differently in retrospect, but those idiosyncrasies are irreplaceable parts of what makes an album like Kezia so incredible. It’s just pure passion and investment in their craft and vision and the result is fucking glorious.
Protest The Hero was truly and still is far ahead of their time. It made me so sad hearing about all the negativity towards them in this interview. Long Live Kezia!
My dad, am amazing guitar player that loves country, heard the band years back and said "who is this?! It's good stuff!" the guitar playing is excellent!
Kezia was amazing Fortress was a Masterpiece one of the few albums I have ever heard that is literally perfect from start to finish very very rare in metal...in music period.
Compared to other bands, Luke,Tim, Rody, Moe and Arif are the best originals members of all time. They fit perfectly together. Sound perfect together. There attitudes with each other are great. I'll be a fan for life.
+Allen Arias From what I recall, Luke loooooooves Thrice. It's so awesome to hear when your favourite band cites your other favourite band as an influence!
I know they sort of have more say than anyone else, but they really sell themselves short on how well these songs were written, they had a natural knack for making memorable work with how technical and energetic the material (is) was. It must be strange to try and get back in the seat that you were in 10 years ago but that album has aged extremely well and set such a high bar for bands in that style as well as a benchmark for all their albums to follow, and the production was such an excellent middle ground between raw punk and metal clarity.
We agree entirely. That album has held up remarkably, but you can't really blame them for not being all "we made a perfect album, we're great," you know? Then everyone would be up in arms about them being too cocky. That being said, it is a perfect album.
How the hell you compare Power Metal to Progressive Metal (core?) ? And better in what way? Technically, Dragonforce are insanely complex and technical. They are band of pros (not to say that PTH are not pros) . So no, they are not technicaly better than Dragonforce. Maybe you like them more than Dragonforce, which I certainly do.
I went to this tour in Philly specifically to see Protest the Hero, and I will never forget the Dragonforce jean jacket power metal bros giving them the finger and throwing shit at them. The sad thing is that they killed that show. They were awesome.
@@danfromsouthjersey it still bothers me that the corniest of cornball fans have so little self-awareness that they think they have the stature and status to look down on ANY other band
As a musician, a drummer, a fan of progressive music and great music in general these guys are insanely talented every note has the perfect place ,they mean every note nothing is just filler. I got to say, from watching interviews from far as back when they're in school to now they're pretty grounded guys they are realists which is a tribute to their Talent the way they write music, their whole way of thinking. They don't take themselves too seriously and I think that's a good thing for a lot of musicians and people in general to realize. They have the right balance between confidence in there playing and modesty, and neither is overdone. If I may continue the ass kissing ,individually their incredible musicians and as a unit in the context of the band It's Magic as far as this musician / fan is concerned. they've been my new favorite band for a good while now. No reason to stop guys you can just keep getting better and better. Fellow countrymen of yours Rush lasted for 40 years I don't think they thought they would make it to 10 years themselves so never say never guys.
This album blew me away in high school. I remember seeing the video for Blindfolds Aside on MTV2 in the UK when I was like 15 and introduced me to that technical sound. Great stuff.
when i first discovered this band/album i was 18. i appreciated the music, and had an idea of the story of the album but never really appreciated it to the level i do now. i’m 27 now, and this album is hitting me in ways it never did. the writing and story is just fantastic. really makes you think, especially around the middle of the album and the way it all comes together. i absolutely adore this album. thank you PTH. this album will always have a special place in my soul.
just such fuckin great and humble guys. deliver this landmark album as practically infants and just like "oh we weren't very good songwriters then" I remember the first time I saw em live just being blown away that they played this crazy stuff perfectly live...unlike say, oh, dragonforce for example
I drove 9 hours north to see their first date in Toronto. It was absolutely worth every second of it. Unbelievable performance. The only thing I hated about it was how incredibly JAM PACKED the venue was. It was like being trapped in a can, shoulder to shoulder with sweaty bros throwing shoes, beer cans and whatever else they could. For anyone who didn't make it, I'll say that they DID have several HD cameras set up (professional quality) along with a ton of Gopros up on stage so don't be surprised if there's a DVD coming from this. I spoke with Riffy after the show and asked him. He said that he wasn't sure what was coming out of it. I guess we shall wait and see.
Ya same with Chain Reaction; Instant crowd smosh, shirtless sweaty fat guy in front of me immediately crowd wave shoved into his rolls can't breath christ
You guys are a huge part of my life. Been listening for 16 years. I knew after hearing Kezia they were special. Incredible musicians and vocals. Absolutely epic discography. My favorite band of all time. Peace and love to all
They had just released one of the greatest prog metal albums in Scurrilous when they lost Moe, one of the tightest and most inventive drummers in all of rock... then Riffy takes off after the next album. PTH calling it quits still hurts to this day, but I get it.
When I still listened to Edge 102 on the radio, I was listening to the Phoenix Club one night, and the late Martin Streek put on Blindfold's Aside. It was difficult to get into it at first, but I remember I instantly liked the guitar work and especially when it slowed down to build up to the final crescendo sequence, which is probably the best one among many such moments on that album. I remembered them many years later, and bought Kezia while I was at HMV(when it still existed) one day. 10/10 record.
Favorite band ever, i went to the kezia tour it was freaking amazing ! I can't believe people booed them in their first appearance just to see dragon force !
20 is close It worked too. I met them in their tour with trivium and they became one of my favorite bands to this day and I never listen to trivium anymore 🤣🤣
I listen in 2020, I didn't know they were communist until recently. I'm getting antifa vibes from there lyrics these days. Still enjoy the sounds but...
Kezia is my favorite PTH album, for both the music and the way the story is fleshed out and is an actual story. Fortress is a great album as well, but I didn't find the lyrics quite as engaging; the story didn't seem as good as the one in Kezia.
awesome video, I absolutely love seeing insight into these guys' music, they are my favorite band!! Only complaint: stop playing blindfolds aside clips every two minutes....we have all heard the song.... like do it twice maybe then be done plz, it was rly disruptive.
+Nintendodo64 ....so why didn't you? lol Aggressive Tendencies has a point :P By the way, the show was epic. I can't wait for the dvd to release, I crowd surfed like crazy!
That Dragonforce tour ahaha, I mean the second Arif walked on stage with no shoes people lost their fucking minds lol I was there for all three bands, PTH, Sanctity, and Dragonforce. All good shit. Wish I could have talk to PTH after the show. I woulda fan-boyed so hard it would have made up for all the asshats.
No wonder the music industry is collapsing on itself. These guys dont get a fraction of the credit, promotion, or recognition they deserve, and a fucking Nicky Minaj video gets a billion hits.
Blows my mind that PtH got boo'd on their first tour with Dragonforce. I was too young to catch that tour, but Dragonforce and PtH were two of my favorite bands during the 2006-2008 timeframe and seeing them together would have blown my MIND. PtH was really just too far ahead of the curve, I guess.
I'm blown away by this band. The music industry sucks, I literally discovered this band a month ago. I heard of them but wrote them off as a crappy metal core band ten years ago. Damn
Wow....to hear that anyone honestly ever complained about PTH being a “shitty band” while waiting to see fucking Dragon Force... GTFO. 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
I personally like "A calculated use of sound" the most. Kezia was great, but I lost interest after that. Underground operations was awesome back then. Bombs over Providence should have been way bigger than they were. Old man rant over.
When i saw Protest they pre hyped the crowd by playing Decline and Half of a Propaghandi album; I couldnt hear them at all weather venue or mix just luck of the draw

Now that I'm older and going back and listening to my old tunes I realize how much of a masterpiece that kezia is
Dude yes, same
Protest The Hero was truly and still is far ahead of their time. It made me so sad hearing about all the negativity towards them in this interview. Long Live Kezia!
they're not a band for morons, so that's like most of the population..
My dad, am amazing guitar player that loves country, heard the band years back and said "who is this?! It's good stuff!" the guitar playing is excellent!
"we're not gonna make the 20-year mark"
You still got three years guys.
Almost there!
I still think Kezia is my favorite album of all time, i can still listen from start to finish and never get bored of it
It is a classic.
Same with fortress
Kezia was amazing Fortress was a Masterpiece one of the few albums I have ever heard that is literally perfect from start to finish very very rare in metal...in music period.
》 VENGEANCE 《 I'd say Conclusion of an Age is one of those albums. (Sylosis)

Aggressive Tendencies
yeah exactly!
The amount in which Protest the Hero in better than Dragonforce is unreal...
+Ovaltine Jenkins 100%

They actually turned down a tour with Sikth to do that tour 😢
I went to this tour in Philly specifically to see Protest the Hero, and I will never forget the Dragonforce jean jacket power metal bros giving them the finger and throwing shit at them. The sad thing is that they killed that show. They were awesome.

I realized this now. I was probably a year late rocking out to it. Remember listening to it graduating year 2006 and beyond.
Kezia as well as Billy Talent and Alexisonfire self titled were some of the best Canadian albums to be recorded, produced and mixed the early 2000s.
Saw them in Ottawa on the Kezia tour last month! They were fantastic. Great openers too.
You guys are a huge part of my life. Been listening for 16 years. I knew after hearing Kezia they were special. Incredible musicians and vocals. Absolutely epic discography. My favorite band of all time. Peace and love to all

My favourite album when i was about 11. Went back and i consider it a classic. Underrated.
So much respect for these guys
I LOVE kezia, such an amazing album i love the dynamics killer riffs vocals, solos all of it
Respect to such a smart/talented/brave band. I will always be at anymore shows y'all play within 3hrs of RVA.
LOVE this band, Protest The Hero.
Hell yeah! That rules. How many times have you seen 'em?
2021 and still my favourite album
Such nice guys
Favorite band ever, i went to the kezia tour it was freaking amazing ! I can't believe people booed them in their first appearance just to see dragon force !
Kezia is a top 5 all time album for me. Prob listened to this record a thousand times.
Its front to back Jams with 0 gaps 👌
God, I hope they come out with a DVD/Blu-Ray... = (
Still listening in 2021
20 is close
It worked too. I met them in their tour with trivium and they became one of my favorite bands to this day and I never listen to trivium anymore 🤣🤣
Who still listens to Kezia in 2017?!
People who rule!
2020
Almost every time I get on the treadmill
All the time!
I listen in 2020, I didn't know they were communist until recently. I'm getting antifa vibes from there lyrics these days. Still enjoy the sounds but...
They're incredible guitar players and nice guys!
What a great interview definetely one of my favorite bands of all time!
Cheers! A bunch of talented lads, no doubt.
Such great great greeeaaaat jams, *chefs kiss*
Cool guys . So nice to see them like this
The result was the greatest metal album of all time.
This is so beautifully honest...Great group...great music..great contributions..Love it..
Still listening in 2021😍😁
Kezia will always be the album that "takes me back".
Still my personal favorite release by the band.
Thank you for this music! It really helped me get through my teenage angst. 😁
Still my fav album by them.
Kezia is my favorite PTH album, for both the music and the way the story is fleshed out and is an actual story. Fortress is a great album as well, but I didn't find the lyrics quite as engaging; the story didn't seem as good as the one in Kezia.
it was deliberately supposed to be more vague and open to interpretation.
Volition is mind blowing man. That's my jam.
This album was seriously amazing back in high school
I'll correct that statement. "This album is still seriously just as amazing as it was in high school"
awesome video, I absolutely love seeing insight into these guys' music, they are my favorite band!! Only complaint: stop playing blindfolds aside clips every two minutes....we have all heard the song.... like do it twice maybe then be done plz, it was rly disruptive.
arghh how did I miss this
Protest the hero is amazing.
Nothing against their newer stuff. But this is my favorite album of theirs by far.
Same. Massively talented band and will never take that away from them, but ''Kezia' just does it for me in a different way!
I was broken when the venue they played this last tour in Montreal was 18+...Kezia was the 1st CD I ever bought.
Their trivium tour in 06 was awesome. Back when trivium was good
worked out to it today in 2021 🤘
Ha sounded like my mom trying to be hip: "The dragonforce, the trivium"
No offence to Dragonforce, but I LOL'd when he said Dragonforce
I would have shelled out so much money to see this tour... but I live in Florida :(
+Nintendodo64 Florida is only about a 2.5hr flight from Toronto!
+Nintendodo64 ....so why didn't you? lol Aggressive Tendencies has a point :P By the way, the show was epic. I can't wait for the dvd to release, I crowd surfed like crazy!
not gonna make it to the 20 year mark? Don't say that :(((
They probably didn't think they'd get past 5 years, I think they can go another 10.
+Alex Ritter lets hope
Almost at the halfway point (in 2019) and a new album is soon coming out, so fuck it, they're going strong still!
They'll make it!
First EP was 2002. So they just need to make it to 2022 at least!
The guy who is going to see dragon force.. Dragon force said to protest they sucked..... Oh god the pain of hearing that story.
That Dragonforce tour ahaha, I mean the second Arif walked on stage with no shoes people lost their fucking minds lol
I was there for all three bands, PTH, Sanctity, and Dragonforce. All good shit.

They should go on tour with The Fall Of Troy! perfect combination!
I saw them with Fall of Troy! I believe it was 2006 or 2007.
@@ShaLLoWBaYzerg goddamn im jealous
WTF.... I missed it all. Wasn't the release 2006? Shouldn't this tour be coming around now?
+Brett Reid According to Wikipedia, Kezia was released on August 30, 2005
+Brett Reid But I think there might be a Kezia X Live DVD in the works... just speculation.
05 on Underground Operations I believe and then it got picked up by Vagrant in 06 and rereleased to the masses.
Blows my mind that PtH got boo'd on their first tour with Dragonforce. I was too young to catch that tour, but Dragonforce and PtH were two of my favorite bands during the 2006-2008 timeframe and seeing them together would have blown my MIND. PtH was really just too far ahead of the curve, I guess.

i named my cat Kezia after this album.
Anyone still listening in 2021?
I miss this music era
i always thought chiodos and silvestein fit way more with protest than "metal bands"
they will fit better.. the style is kind the same
Emmanuel .Quinones not really. PTH fit much more into the prog metal world then the emo genre
Blueskythinking okay but neither of those bands are emo
I see a lot of similarities with pre-CraigOwensSplit-chiodos-theatricality honestly.
I think the dragon force fans where just in denial that their favorite band is garbage.
+Alex Ritter hell yeah!
Dudes last name is Mac Miller.
Funny cause Thrice was my favorite band until the day I heard Protest The Hero.
Wow....to hear that anyone honestly ever complained about PTH being a “shitty band” while waiting to see fucking Dragon Force... GTFO. 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
Love these guys. Dragonforce is Ah! Ah! Cringe core meme stock
Love the fawkin boyz
Wow. Just wow. Dragonforce fanbase is so based. *slow clap*

Protest the hero > dragonforce.
i dont even think that gimmick band plays anymore.
influences fom propagandhi ,u cant go wrong
Fortress is one of the greatest prog metal albums ever.
