How South Park Always Knows Exactly What You’re Thinking

  • The best South Park episodes are still just as funny and relevant as they were the day they were made. Cartman, Kyle, Kenny and Stan have given television some of its most memorable moments. Yet its the absurdity of what goes into South Park that has kept the show interesting for so long. This is a look at how South Park has survived for over 20 years! Two things, one, a great look at the behind the scenes stuff is the doc 6 days to air, and two, most of the content here does not pertained to the fully serialized seasons.

What would be the topic you most want to see a South Park episode revolve around?
ALSO: I accidentally swap Matt and Trey last names once in the video lmao only happens once but still, slip of the tongue! And for those wondering, as I kind of talk about in the video, the first set of episodes were not made this quickly, it took a while to get to the one a week point!

Parker and Stone's turnaround time is legendary. I remember during the Iraq War, when US troops captured Saddam Hussein hiding in an underground bunker. That Wednesday, they made an episode that mirrored the Wizard of Oz in Canada, in which they found Saddam Hussein hiding in a spider hole, controlling the Oz-like prime minister. I remember being amazed at how quickly an animated show was made and aired, complete with Saddam Hussein arrest photos, with a current event that was still happening.

    • @cogginsnuff

Y'know I can see how people being offended or squeamish or otherwise having their sensibilities perturbed can be amusing, but I've often found that the people who find the most joy in that specific aspect alone tend to miss the actual punch line. The audience often sides with the text in a manner akin to that of someone being a bully and all the bully's friends doubling down on their behalf. Of course sometimes that actually is the case, comedians and writers don't always hit the mark and in trying to make a joke sometimes they do end up just being a bully. However when they do hit the mark, sometimes it's the audience that misses. They misconstrue the subject of the joke with the joke itself. Just to clarify I'm saying the joke isn't that people got offended, if it were that simple being mean would be inherently funny, the joke is WHY they got offended. In the right context two men kissing and offending someone is funny because it's silly to be offended by consenting adults touching lips. If you murder someone's child it's not really that funny when the parent is offended, because you would expect someone to be offended by that, that's drama. Comedy is often as simple as subverting expectations.
My favorite is when South Park point out why you don't need to be offended about something in a critical but also original or unexpected manner that really highlights the core issue and doesn't directly make any specific person, group, or idea the sole subject of the joke.

God I remember episode 200/201, that's still my favorite episode ever.
For anyone who missed it the plot was basically that every celebrity wanted to harness the awesome power of Muhammed to avoid being mocked (lead by Tom cruise of course) and the kids having to keep him safe from them.
Eventually in the end Tom gets the power of Muhammad but it doesn't work. The kids can still mock him and his censor bar disappears because no one will go to war to protect anyone else's right to be censored out of any and all criticism and mockery. Only Muhammad has that power.

The quick pace of the episodes that have "morals" are frequently thoughts bouncing around in the early stages of a story, so looking back at 10+ year old episodes is sometimes hilarious how incorrect they are. Meanwhile, the more abstract episodes are timeless and perfect lol

I actually find this reactionary format is a disservice to the longevity of the show. It is their ability to look at social issues from different angles and be critical of ideas that is the shows' strength. The fact that they happen to write their show like this is separate to their ability to produce this sort of reactionary content, at times however it may compliment it. There might be something here about censorship but that's almost a whole other issue.
Also I think you can do better than framing this as "the "wrong" way".

Kaiser Bigmac ah thanks, that makes sense, as usually the episodes with the different animation styles are the first ones of their seasons, as they actually spend much more time on those than the rest of the season’s episodes.

That Towelie episode is one of my all time favorites of the Show. It shows that you don't need any of the main four leads to have a good episode.

2:20 I lived in Florida. I recall in my real life, I purchased a PSP, and I took a walk down to photograph the media circus event in front of where Terri Schiavo was vegetating ... AND THEN, I saw this South Park episode, as current and up to date as the evening news is.

SouthPark is where I always go to get pure facts and truth about social issues. I am no be facetious either, I truly mean it. if I'm ever slightly confused about what is going on in the world SouthPark clears it up for me in 20 minutes.

As someone who grew up watching South Park, (started in first grade) I think it’s probably one of the best educational cartoons ever made. South Park taught me about the world in a way that made me understand other people’s views and accept them. Because everyone is fucking ridiculous and believes something absurd. And most importantly, that EVERYONE DESERVES TO GET LAUGHED AT.

also they, like most comedic shows must have, is random humor in it. Random, clever, humour in it can make anybody laugh and shows they are relatable in thier own way. i think not trying to be relatable in a public way and inserting jokes you and sometimes people will get is good. It shows people what you find funny and that will make people find that funny down the line someday or in that current moment. It's what my favorite youtuber used to do(still does, kinda) but now he's too much of a relatable star for people and goes for the humour people generally will find funny not what he finds funny of course, or it just may seem youtubers are changing as a result of some experiences they've had but whatevs. Both communities that i was talking about connect back to each other in a general way generally relative humour vs one's own sense of humour.
Sid note: This was a long ass paragraph of a comment! I'm sorry if you have to read all this(i know i wouldn't)
