    What is your favorite animated film of all time?
    ALSO: To be clear, Shrek 4 actually isn’t that bad, it’s a quality film, unlike 3. AND I LOVE Disney films, this isn't to say Shrek is better than all of them, or any of them for that matter. Instead it's more about how Shrek approaches the same ideas.

      Kung Fu Panda:
      1. The Eastern thoughts, ideas, art styles, and values
      2. The juxtaposition between the Grand Master and the geeky fan boy
      3. The crazy good cast of voice actors that aren't just cameos but rather balanced characters (furious five)

    • @Alexandra-rb7ju
      @Alexandra-rb7ju 4 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      I can't watch most adult animated films because of the overuse of nostalgia. I'm not sure if you are aware of Invader Zim, but I'll use the 2019 movie as an example. The creator mostly decided to bring it back for one last hurrah after being off air since 2002. In other words, it was nothing more but one big nostalgic wave and it was utterly a disappointment.

      true. If you remember they do it in punchlines too. Think of how they start with Farquad. They have stomping boots down a hallway an executioner... pouring milk. TIGHT red gloves with curling fingers in them, a reveal of his deep chinned face, a men's quire and a church organ. Then you see him approach two guards who stand clear for him. Only then does the music suddenly stop, and his true size is revealed as he walks past the guards through the door.

    It’s also that Dreamworks has this sense of a “hit or a miss” charm with their films. It feels more authentic than the overused formula Disney movies follow. Shrek teaches us about what true love really is. Some people these days expect you to be perfect and when they see a few minor flaws in you, they get turned off and look for someone else, who they think is their “perfect match”; when in reality no one is perfect. Shrek accepted Fiona despite all of her flaws and actually found the beauty in them. Fiona thought she needed to put her best face on to be loved by someone, when all she really needed was to love herself and find someone who would love her for who she is. I think the quote from the movie, God’s not dead can summarize this up well, “To the wrong person you will never have any worth. To the right person you will mean everything.”

    And the animation still holds. There's a little bit of stiffness with some characters, and the scene where Shrek carries a fainted donkey into the woods looks like the characters are kind of walking on air, but overall, it's still beautifully animated.

      @trequor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +372

      The animation is insanely impressive for the era. It's very, very basic and they dont do anything crazy creative with it, but the simple fact that it generally looks good is groundbreaking on its own.
      Like even just animating a CG character walking through a forest, and making it look good, was an achievement in CG animation

      @@trequor I think Shrek showed a huge leap in facial expressions and what you could do with character and action movement compared to previous animations, it bring the characters to life so much more. The environment, background and lighting is still incredibly basic but you ignore that and focus almost entirely on the characters expressions whilst looking forward to the next jokes. Remembering it came out in early 2001 is still astounding, especially as Dreamwork's 3D animation debut, it was so ahead of it's time it took many years for other films to start replicating it like Kung Fu Panda.

    Shrek got feminism right. Instead of portraying Fiona as this "independent woman who don't need no man" stereotype, they just showed her being a human, or rather, an ogre. A person with more depth like anyone else. She could be elegant as a princess, but she has her favorite types of foods, enjoys being an ogre like Shrek, sometimes getting dirty, and being really capable as a fighter. A woman who can kick butt, love unique things, and still like being elegant with a healthy dose of gentleness and kindness should be considered attractive by lots of standards. Something I learned about getting married was that my wife is a person just the same as me, and living together means getting to know the real her, as a person, having typical human needs, dreams, dislikes, fears, likes, and so forth. We learn to love these little things we do, and I find that's likely what Shrek and Fiona saw in each other. First appearance and impressions are important on dates because they don't distract you as much from allowing you to communicate and get to know each other at first, but you find that falling in love has more to do with the little things you find in their character.
    To sum it up, I like that Fiona defies some common feminist and damsel stereotypes while finding a middle-ground in portraying her as a sympathetic person who finds love in someone who also felt like everyone judged him for his appearance. That's beautiful. The move didn't start off with a beautiful, elegant princess. It started off with a misunderstood, ugly-looking ogre, and we the audience came to love him despite first impressions. Amazing, isn't it?

    It's also amazing how much it focuses on the importance of friendships and forgiveness, and goes against all of the norms we face. It introduces the acceptance of body size, and Shrek 2 even slips a gay man in there. It took pressure from society for Disney to do that, but DreamWorks did it right away. Only to have Shrek reject the cliche fairytale ending that farquad wanted with Fiona for an untraditional fairytale ending with him. Shrek only gets better with time unlike every other movie. I remember paying no attention to it as a child when it first came out and now rewatching them as an adult almost every single scene is comedically genius, the animation still holds up, and all the references are iconic. I usually feel the oposite when I rewatch childhood favorites. As ugly as Shrek is the movie is truly a work of art.

    The film entirely changed mainstream animation and is a masterclass in subverting tropes whilst managing to adhere to conventions. The music is so well chosen, and it can be enjoyed by all ages due to the excellent script. We still see so many other films try and fail to emulate what it achieved.

Even though reboots are inevitable in this day and age for Hollywood I really hope they leave the series be, or if they do make a new sequel film (non reboot) make it really damn good.

    There’s a reason I like stuff like Shrek and Despicable me.
    They start with what we allegedly believe is the Villain or antagonist.
    Shrek being an ogre and scaring people and Gru being an evil villain who steals things.
    In the end they’re actually the hero and not the villain, Shrek saves Fiona after realizing he loves and cares for her, next they go on a honeymoon and still have to figure things out.
    Gru is kinda the same, he ends up saving the girls he adopted from his rival and becomes a dad, a movie later and he becomes a spy to take down villains.

    They had Mcfarlane Toys design a line of toys for the first movie. There was a huge difference between the way the original vs. sequels were marketed....

      Oh yeah I had some of those! Beautiful toys, but not really meant for children. I remember having broken pieces here and there especially on Fiona who I adored, but there weren’t any other alternatives flooding the toy aisle back then

      The sequels (at least the third and fourth ones I know) were promoted heavily by McDonald's, with the third having toys in happy meals, and the fourth having cups that caused a lawsuit.

      I got to see Toy Story in 1995 as an '88 baby. Blew my mind but damn were the humans ugly as sin. I think Toy Story and Shrek are films everyone owned on VHS, probably Jumanji too.

      Im a 2000 baby, i grew up with this film. If that isn’t testament to how well shrek stood the test of time idk what is. How many films are made to be forgotten and no longer seen in a few years? Shrek was never one of those

    What's even funnier is that "AllStar" was first used in "Mystery Men," but no one associates the song with that movie. And that movie also deconstructs the comic book hero but few remember it or probably saw it at the time or since then.

      What third one? You mean the final one in the trilogy, Shrek Forever After. That was a pretty good movie. You'd assume they would have called it something generic like Shrek The Third, but no movie by that title exists. It's Shrek, Shrek 2, and Shrek Forever After, a good trilogy.
