Peter's confession is the rock (not Peter).
"Therefore, he says, You are Peter; and upon this Rock which you have confessed,
upon this Rock which you have acknowledged, saying, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,
will I build My Church; that is upon Myself, the Son of the living God, will I build My Church.
I will build you upon Myself, not Myself upon you."
      - Augustine of Hippo
Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament
      SERMON XXVI.
      AGAIN ON MATT. XIV. 25:
OF THE LORD WALKING ON THE WAVES OF THE SEA, AND OF PETER TOTTERING.

Well, Jesus, Peter, and Peter's confession are all rock. Christ is the ultimate foundation , cornerstone and builder of the Church. Peter is the visible leader and the "rock" upon which the Church is built. Peter's confession of faith is the truth upon which the Church stands.

St. Augustine also wrote : "If the order of bishops succeeding to Peter is to be considered, who does not know that he is the rock which the Church has been built upon by the Lord?"
St. Cyprian of Carthage: "The Lord says to Peter: ‘I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my Church.’... He builds His Church upon him."

I lost my belief being confronted by atheistic professors and I prayed and asked God to help me with my doubt. Within the next week I saw the Shroud of Turin on a magazine, then it popped up on a phone from a guy sitting next to me at the Dr. Office. I went down that rabbit hole and now I am convinced that the resurrection happened and my life has been changed and I felt his love or spirit flow over me. I also lost the fear of death that haunted me for years.

      Romans 3:23-25 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, [24] and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, [25] whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
      Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, [9] not a result of works, so that no one may boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Faith produces good works but good works play no part in obtaining or keeping salvation

The idea that one way is true while other ways are wrong, is the basic premise for our entire school system or any type of truth. It's the single worst argument against a belief. Many people can be wrong, while few people are right. That's usually how things work. And ultimately, the view that all religions are wrong, or all religions are true, simply becomes another truth-claim added to the bunch. Not somehow above the question of what is right or wrong. Great job by Michael.

The Catholic Church preserved, compiled, translated, chose the books to include and declared the Bible canon in 382 under Pope Damasus at the Council of Rome. Jesus didn’t leave us a Bible but He did leave us a church (Matthew 16:18). Every Catholic essentially reads the entire bible (OT & NT) every 5yrs at Sunday Mass.

God is defined as a being than which none greater can be concived.
A being that necessarily exists is greater than one that does not necessarily exist.
If God exists only in the mind and not in reality, then a greater being could be imagined-one that necessarily exists.
But no greater being can be imagined than God.

History? Really? The Catholic church, with one of the most abominable histories (second only to Nazi Germany, which it had alliance with) in mankind's existence, is justified by it??
As many outright false scriptures as the Catholic church has concocted, there are many that are indeed true. It is up to every Catholic, and indeed every one of us, to seek out that which is true, and reject, even expose, that which is not. "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling," God tells us. Trust in him alone, not people. When we stand before God in judgement, he couldn't care less what "religion" we affiliated with - only what we did with, for his Son.

Sacramentals are efficacious holy objects that are meant to inspire and bring us closer to God. Catholics do not worship Mary. Priests cannot marry because their vocation is different. Confession to a priest is biblical, traditional, and real regardless of what you think. Purgatory is real. Papal infallibility is not what you think it means, and it's funny you talk down about "made-up doctrines" when you technically follow made-up doctrines as well, so you're a hypocrite.
The fact you say Catholic history is abominable only second to Nazi Germany just shows your level of ignorance.
People in the Church can be wrong, but that doesn't mean the nature and mission of the Church itself is false. Religion is an organized response to what God has revealed to us. I fail to see why someone like you would consider something unorganized / divided as superior to something organized / unified. "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" doesn't mean you can ultimately be your own church or your own pope. It means take what Christ did for us on the cross, make that your own, and offer it back up to him for your good and for all his Holy Church. Faith is not a purely private or subjective matter. And it is not by faith alone that we are saved, but grace alone. And that grace can be lost if we sin. You can't just say "I believe!" and yet do nothing for your brother. This is what the Church teaches, not whatever made-up filth you've imagined the Church in your head to be.

Obviously it’s the Catholic view that Catholicism is the fullness of truth and other religions, although there are truths to be found in them, are not fully true. So I think the question “which religion is true?” Misses the notion that you can land on a religion, still be wrong to an extent, but still be right to an extent.

@@xoalwgickamglqof yes it does. Here’s the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
The Church’s bond with non-Christian religions is in the first place the common origin and end of the human race:
All nations form but one community. This is so because all stem from the one stock which God created to people the entire earth, and also because all share a common destiny, namely God. His providence, evident goodness, and saving designs extend to all against the day when the elect are gathered together in the holy city … * The Catholic Church recognizes in other religions that search, among shadows and images, for the God who is unknown yet near since he gives life and breath and all things and wants all men to be saved. Thus, the Church considers all goodness and truth found in these religions as “a preparation for the Gospel and given by him who enlightens all men that they may at length have life.”* In their religious behavior, however, men also display the limits and errors that disfigure the image of God in them:
Very often, deceived by the Evil One, men have become vain in their reasonings, and have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and served the creature rather than the Creator. Or else, living and dying in this world without God, they are exposed to ultimate despair.* To reunite all his children, scattered and led astray by sin, the Father willed to call the whole of humanity together into his Son’s Church. The Church is the place where humanity must rediscover its unity and salvation. The Church is “the world reconciled.” She is that bark which “in the full sail of the Lord’s cross, by the breath of the Holy Spirit, navigates safely in this world.” According to another image dear to the Church Fathers, she is prefigured by Noah’s ark, which alone saves from the flood.*
“Outside the church, there is no salvation.”
How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers?* Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:
Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.* This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church:
Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience-those too may achieve eternal salvation.* “Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation and also the sacred right to evangelize all men.”* - I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church, CCC 842-848

Because Catholicism actually even allows marriage between different religions. It's funny the later question they asked about whether or not it would be a deal breaker if Michael's wife did not go along with the religion. I came to religion the same way he did. I came to the logical conclusion that there must be a creator, So did the creator create and just disappear or is it a personal creator? If it's a personal creator then which religion seems most logical? When I came to Christianity I said okay which denomination seems most logical? I became a devout protestant and well catechized. It wasn't until recently that I started to become challenged by Roman catholics that I decided I would learn more than the average catholic so that I could convert catholics to protestantism, And through all of the extensive and in depth studies and reading I did, I wound up backing myself into the front door of the Catholic Church. I had to admit I was wrong, And that catholicism is correct.
But back to my original point, Is my wife and I were not religious initially. She lets me have my religion, She lets me engage our children in it, But she wants no part of it. Is it has been difficult, I would be lying if I said differently. But it is possible.

This is my beef with Catholics and how they talk about faith like this. I know it’s only a snip of the conversation but the guys asking questions kept digging and Michael never told them about being saved. He just made it seem like the act of going to church. Of trusting in Jesus and confessing him as Lord is trying to fly out of your mouth in this conversation idk what is. Great answers besides that just wish the gospel could’ve been highlighted a bit better.

Salvation is an ongoing process not a one time thing - that is why Catholics do not use the language "being saved" because it implies a one-time event. You cannot have God the Father without Church the Mother. Mother Church contains all the sacraments and graces needed to attain eternal life, namely in the sacrament of the Eucharist where we receive the very body and blood of Jesus Christ that gives eternal life and become one with Him. Jesus established the Church to bring salvation to the world through it. Therefore, outside the Church, there is no salvation.

I see a lot of people are either too scared to think that deep about life and it's meaning or they just don't want to bother and dig for the meaning. Many people now just want to have a good time and collect as many things of "value" before they die. That is a very sad and scary way to live; as I was once an achiest. Racing against time constantly to try and achieve something that always has the goalpost moving and ultimately doesn't mean anything when we die. People that I see who don't believe in God, regardless of how radical, are all trying to fill a whole in their heart that only God can fill. I hope anyone who doesn't believe in God open up their hearts to give the Bible and a relationship with God a shot. A genuine shot, and see how it transforms you. God bless you all!

My parents are Portuguese so when Americans or other groups say they are Catholic I picture my grandparents attitudes and older Portuguese people culture. They were dictatorship directly connected to the Catholic Church. They had strict rules. And Catholic mass used to be Latin. And they said that in mass they used to make the women sit in the back and the men in the front and to not look at them. The church also runs like the farmers market every week and they are saint days.
But they’re super conservative and they hit the kids. It’s used to be like Vince lambardi football. It’s a very work oriented culture and religion.
In America all of the religions are more relaxed like it’s a Sunday picnic and families sit together and hold hands and eat pancakes. I never directly lived in it but it seems like it used to be more discipline based and work based. Instead of Christmas holiday hugging with Santa Claus it was more related to school and duties. In America church is promoted as family fun stuff. I think its original intent was focusing on work and service. The schools and hospitals and services like what nuns do was a bigger deal.
The people were tougher. My grandparents seemed fearless and workhorses. They’re like a rocky marciano.

When The God of Israel Speaks... It's Good to Listen

Isaiah 43: 9-18 Before the day was... I AM HE...

9 Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and shew us former things?
let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.

10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me,
and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you:
therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God.

13 Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?

14 Thus saith the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; For your sake I have sent to Babylon,
and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships.

15 I am the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.

    16 Thus saith the LORD, which maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters;

17 Which bringeth forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together,
they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are quenched as tow.

18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

Isaiah 45:5-9, 18 Woe unto him that Striveth with his MAKER!

5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:

6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.

7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

8 Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open,
and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it.

9 Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth.
Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it,
he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

Isaiah 46:8-11 I AM GOD... and there is none else...

8 Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors.

9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying,
My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

11 Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea,
I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

Isaiah 47:10-14 Word for Astrologers and Stargazers, and Prognosticators

    10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee;
and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.

    11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee;
thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

    12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth;
if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.

13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators,
stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame:
there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
