UPDATE - well it only took SIX Weeks for my replacement to arrive. I made an 8am appointment and it was done by 9:30am. It looks the same, BUT I hope they fixed the issue. The new unit comes with a one year warranty. But my old one was 5 years old before this all started.

It is essential that the digitizer was replaced as a minimum. It’s possible they replaced the lcd as well as a unit, but not essential. Even bad connections at the ribbon cable can be trouble. The hope is the new bits are better made. I can say at least 5 other car companies have various touch screen issues and some will go back to radio with dials next year or possibly the one after so we don’t have to take our eyes off the road.

A workaround I discovered (yes I have the delamination bubbles baad) that at least keeps my radio station on - start car, select my favorite radio station and immediately press the House (home) button to get the apps screen instead of the radio screen. Now the radio will at least keep playing while the screen goes full on berserk, and Bluetooth will connect too. Caveat for me is my touch screen won’t freak out for the first 5 or 10 minutes I drive from cold start, so I do have a chance to set this up.

My 2016 Outback started doing this in 100+ weather this week. I found your video. Oh no, there's a bajillion big and small bubbles like you're describing. The screen is frozen for input, yet it os cycling through settings and all sorts of stuff like crazy. The sound is sooo annoying, but I can't seem to mute the button pushing sounds. Have to turn off my phone's bluetooth to not start calling and texting everybody in my phone. Unresponsive to stwering wheel commands. Hubby found a place online that can sell us a used replacement for about $250. My Hubby thinks he can install it. We'll see what happens. Subaru Canada is giving me the standard company line "When an amended and extended warranty period is offered, and expires, we have no ability to do anything else to support you"..... I laughed and asked her who's policy that was - she said "Subaru's policy".... which I pointed out was convenient. If its Subaru's policy, just change it. This recall issue was because they knew they had problems. The extended period was because they knew they had problems. The problems are STILL happening with cars. Has anyone had any luck in Canada with pushing a claim through after the extended warranty period has passed? Its BS that they are trying to push that problem to the consumer now.

The issue is due to delamination of the screen and there are a ton of radio's on backorder. People are waiting months for a radio to be available. Part of the issue with availability is that the replacement radio is a reman exchange unit. Radio's are not being sent back to the reman facility within a decent amount of time to refurbish them to be sold again so the backorder gets longer and longer especially with the demand of so many radio's going bad.

My original started having the issue 2.5 years in and was replaced under original warranty. The replacement is now going bad the same way again. I have around 15-17 dots in the top right and it presses the Bluetooth button and tries to pair another device (disconnecting my current phone). The heat seems to make it worse so I have a towel in my car to put over the radio while I’m at work/home. Then I take it off once paired with my phone and click the messages button as fast as I can so it has a prompt on the screen to connect messages and the “ghost” can’t hit any buttons because the prompt is too low for it.

None on our '19 Sport, but my sister's Legacy started gong crazy last week. I'm wondering if covering the screen with opaque carboard will help, but she's already been to her dealer, she has a 8 year extended warranty as do we. She has 8,500 miles on hers as she lives in a town and doesn't drive much, we have 14,000 on ours because we have several cars. They told her it was a $5K replacement without warranty, I hope she misunderstood. Our car sits on a covered carport with a car cover on it when not in use, her's sits in her driveway. We do have the large screen. If not for the warranty, I'd look at Crutchfield's offerings.

Same thing on my 2018 SUBARU. They blamed me (and the dealer was very rude) for using cleaning fluid, which I never used. I used only a dry microfiber cloth the clear off dust once a month. They delayed and delayed until the warranty expired. Subaru of America corporate support is USELESS. They try to sound like they want to help but they end up doing nothing. The dealer charged me almost $100 just to say it needs to be replaced, which they already knew. So the replacement radio is way over a thousand dollars + labor and as of today (October 2023) the radio is STILL not available. I don't think they will ever make more replacements so an aftermarket radio is probably the only solution. But Subaru are such bastards that they made the wire connections for the speakers extremely complicated to figure out.
