interesting design concept, I can only imagine how terrifying it would be to see a slightly larger one with WHIP's mouse controlled turret script zipping around at the speed limit giving other players nightmares. Or worse, a large grid version using railguns to send people to Narnia.
I have a couple of vehicles like that and it is their entire purpose. Most of them carry custom guided missiles as primary or secondary weapons, mainly because it allows them to make use of their unique mobility while using their weapons. They aslo have a secret ability to dodge missiles themselves by using a friction spike to quickly lose their speed, which usually causes any missile getting nearby to miss. It is hard to pull but it can be the diffrence between life and death
@@dragonf1recdn If you want the turret on auto then yeah absolutely, but some people prefer manual control and unlike the premade turrets you can't control the main grid when using the custom controller on manual. Has to do with controls not working between grids and subgrids. Only a script will fix that for the moment. Hopefully they change that at some point.
@@dragonf1recdn Well the issue is that the turret controller does not allow for control of the ship while operating the gun, nor does it enables stabilization of the gun for accurate on the move fire if you wish to manually use it. If you want to use it automated then it is far more preferable indeed
(atmo) thrusters still use cobalt, which most of the time you're going to have to search for a while for, therefore rovers are still an important part of the progression.
To make this more survival ready you could remove the sub grids, use less thrusters to move around so it’s more energy efficient than a ship and have some thrusters to go up and over rough terrain. It’s by no means a new meta but it brings new advantages and disadvantages to the table. I’m going to try making my own and see where I get.
Been building concepts like this for while. Glad to see someone else doing it and a transforming design as well! Though I do stick to blocks or small grid hinges to avoid causing clang on servers for mods to hunt.
Wouldn't call it a new meta because this class of vehicles kinda have both ship and rover disadvantages, which are higher energy consumption, somewhat limited off-road capabilities and low clang protections, which is even worse here due to all those subgrids. Also subgrids on their own are a disadvantage in survival because you can only weld the main grid using a projector at a time
Definitely an interesting adaptation of skimmers. Might have to build one of these, but frankly, it's easier to just fly. Would be neat to see how this handles a heavy cargo load, though.
I have made similar (blockier) designs using small hinges and suspensions on large (small grid) cargo containers. I like them a lot because they handle the load well, and I set them up with a formation script to follow a small craft, so I made an entire hover train of wireless cargo containers
@@generaljedi8691 If I recall, you can even do basic formations without scripts. Lock the inertial dampeners to be relative to the grid you wish them to follow/escort. The range for relative dampeners is limited, but it should allow the vehicle to maintain relative position to the player vehicle, so long as the player isn't too erratic.
@@Gottaculat I may try that, but I usually have to space out the carts to a set distance so they don’t collide when braking and they dont loose each other when the lead accelerates (as the script uses antennas for its range)
It looks more like a replacement for low atmospheric fighters and personal transport vehicles. And probably a good one at that! (though, I think it needs more lift to work well as a fighter) Though having the wheels on hinges might cause some problems during combat... subgrids become clengs wrath when simtime increases.
I'll admit when I first saw the creation, I am wasn't completely sure what to expect, but after seeing it in action, I am rather impressed, and I'll be honest as well. I'm not the greatest builder, but this is still really impressive building skills.
Yeah, it's kinda of old, but since the stabilization of the subgrids, We're able to make these respond to the terrain better. Plus, most of these were just sideways mounted, rigid body skimmers. I've been seeing these more often than actual rovers. The current suspension block seems so unreliable. Thanks for watching!
You can put wheels on the bottom of your aircraft, but it's simpler to do vertical landing exactly where you want to be. So for me rovers are more for short trips around the base with heavy cargo from near by mines. I mostly just use one large rover for gathering ice on lakes to fuel hydrogen craft. That thing looks pretty neat tho!
All this fancy things just work cause of smooth voxels ^^ and actually noone would do things like that in survival. Despite of that, this is an amazing design and idea.
I'll be honest, I haven't actually done a play through with it, but I tried to build it specifically for survival. You can always try it out and see spaceengineers.mod.io/evhcmk3-bugdrone
@@The-lr4zo Your speed trim is also very effective with this. In a rover, you'd coast a while with no load power, but with this, it's like gliding on ice. Also, I can pretty much cover any terrain, and never really get stuck. It probably take a huge amount of power to hover, but you CAN. Also, I can go in a straight line, lol. For some reason, Suspension blocks are so unstable in SE atm. Traditional rover flip too easily.
The only glaring advantage these have is that they're quite resistant to rolling sideways compared to rovers. Other than that they've got the same problem as any fast ground vehicle; launching themselves at high speed followed by a hard landing self destruct. You can thruster brake in the air and slow down sure but then you're pretty much flying so why bother touching the ground?
Fair enough! I wish I enjoyed the traditional suspension in the game. It's something to do with the friction, causing everything to flip, or high side so easily. ESPECIALLY, if it's not a rigid body suspension.
