    damn... that tiny ship is a marvel of miniaturisation, usually making something look good in SE takes quite a bit more blocks, but this little guys looks straight out of a sci-fi city...

      a little trick that helps me compact things down is put in the key blocks I want (assemblers storage tanks etc) in a pattern like a H or T or whatever then conveyor them up and fill it out with walkways, airlocks, seats whatever you're planning to put in it and colour to your style (I prefer either black and yellow/purple or white and light green/blue personally)

    The amount of work you're able to do with so few blocks is awesome. Pretty sure I'd spend 10x the amount of time just scrolling through the menus to find the right shaped blocks and feebly trying to rotate them to the correct orientation only to get something that looks only a 1/4 as good, not to mention would explode upon use.
    Keep up the great work!

    Watching this made me realize there’s a mirror mode… and that all of my suffering was unnecessary…
    I built a capital ship by hand in survival mode block by block because I didn’t know how projectors worked or how to use mirror mode so yeah, I built a ship that could all of our other ships inside
    Granted it wasn’t a very pretty ship, it kinda looked like a ship from warhammer at the front with a big ass icebreaker ram on it, and it had weak spots in bad places but to be fair I was the least experienced ship builder in the group and yet I was tasked with building the ship that we would leave the planet in and live

  • @ViniciusNegrao_
    @ViniciusNegrao_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I guess there are two types of builders. The functionality first type and the shape first type. Me, I lay out every single functional block I want the ship to have and then slap the shape on top, but the shape is usualy weird. You did an awesome job with the design of the ship, Next time I'll try laying out the shape first!

    • @cupman7326
      @cupman7326 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find that when doing the shape, adding some of the bigger functional blocks (connectors, antenna, ect) can help you figure out the shape better, at least when it comes to small ships

    Awesome looking little ship, great to see it made it to the #1 highlighted spot on the workshop!
    By the way, what planet is that?

  • @AysaMetric
    @AysaMetric 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Three quick questions:
    1) Are you playing with thruster damage off, or are the 2x1 tips in front of your reverse thrusters small enough to avoid thruster damage?
    2) How do you recharge the ship? It doesn't have a merge block or connector anywhere on it, so would you need to build new batteries every time it dies?
    3) Could one theoretically replace the folding cockpit shield armor blocks with glass so that it's flyable in first person?

    • @ngikjegjangbiuea
      @ngikjegjangbiuea ปีที่แล้ว

      Obviously I'm not the guy who made the ship, but I can answer some of this.
      1) Not sure, looking at 4:38 it doesn't look like there's tips there? Might be me going crazy, I dunno
      2) In that ship's current state, it'd need new batteries every time. You'd be able to use a 1x1 merge block on the bottom or a small reactor for easy docking/refueling though, I reckon
      3) Yes, panels and windows (iirc) have the same hitbox. It wouldn't have the same depth as the final build, obviously, but you could recreate the 5:41 build.

  • @remielpollard787

    I modified this with a clear glass canopy that works and I can see through, because I can't stand flying with cameras or in 3rd person, removed the hinges on the side and just filled the fuselage on the sides, because I think those hinges were causing a bit of clang, made flying it a bit wobbly, and added a small reactor and ore detector. It's now actually useful in survival for fast atmospheric ore scouting. The reactor makes it not an early game thing, though, so it's probably not practical due to having something even more useful much earlier anyway. I only put a reactor on due to a lack of connector. That being said, even just as a fast air car, for getting from one place to another, it's still quite useful, even without the ore detector.

    I have over 100 hours in this game, but that's only me fumbling around in survival. I designed a handful of ships only after watching TONS of videos on almost EXACTLY what to do.
    I just spent the last 4 hours designing my first large ship in the game. Not only does he get the mirror tool to work, but he actually has a line up of all the blocks he wants to use, instead of having to go back; again and again. This man makes me cry.

    Super cool. My D: drive died the other day and I haven't been able to play anything, waiting on a new one and looking forward to getting back into SE with the new update coming. Making things as compact as possible is always hard, usually you have to use rotors and hinges to make stuff use the same block space. I had a small mech I was working on with a 1x2 modded seat and a cockpit that folded top and bottom with displays built in, sensors too so it opened up for you as you approched and closed after you got in.

    I like building small ships, it makes you really think about packaging and how to efficiently cram everything and resulting in something that is efficient and effective. When I find a design I like, I rebuild it over nad over until I have something that really works. Then when you move to making larger ships, you have no excess and you can really get the shapes you want.

    I always have trouble with painting. How do you decide what parts of the ship should be what colours? Do you have a palette that you use or something? Also how exactly do you paint, I always end up having to delete half the blocks to get it all painted, which adds a good hour or so when painting even for small ships.

    • @MajorJon
      @MajorJon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any fixed palettes, but some ground rules. Typically I use a dominant color (often white), a contrasting color for grooves/greeble (almost always dark grey) and a colorful highlight, which you can use to give it some pattern (like stripes or so). I always paint with the spectator cam, you can move into blocks and paint them from the inside, kinda weird, but it works. A lot of people also seem to like the paint gun mod, I only sometimes use the color replacer block mod for big ships.

    I would have replaced those front blocks on the hinges with windows, so the pilot can look out and it wouldn’t go into the model. And the flat block right behind them would look better slanted down. The bottom needs work too, lots of unfinished and exposed systems there.

    I think it could be much smaller if you use small reactors instead of batteries (and probably infinite lifetime as long as you have nuggets). Also why not change cockpit door to glass so you can fly it in 1st person. Also why dont use standard cockpit (fighter for example) it pretty small and grant you enclosed volume(to maybe have oxygen in it to breathe)
