  • Pipeline Welding School (HOW TO GO FOR FREE)
Austin Ross breaks down pipeline welding training. Pipeline welder certification is different than you may expect. Pipe welding schools can be a great start. My best pipe welding schools suggestions are welding tech schools (especially if they are free), Tulsa Welding School, and Kentucky Welding Institute. Many offer pipe welding courses, pipe welding certification, and pipe welding certification test, but there is a big missing puzzle piece. Experience.
So, do you get tradition pipe welding training by taking a pipeline welding course or do you really dive into pipeline welding by way of pipeline welding classes in the field. Learning how to become a pipeline welder can be tricky, but I would love to save you some time and money by skipping pipeline welding school.
Watch the video to learn how I think you can get paid welding training, specifically if you want to do pipeline welding.

I’ve been to Kilgore welding school in Kilgore Texas, the only thing about dimes welding schools is you don’t learn to weld in the elements like you would in the pipeline. Welding in an air conditioned shop won’t get you ready for welding outside

it depends where you come from too... In Canada (New Brunswick) more specifically you NEED to test for a F3/F4 qualified plate ticket(open root all position flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) 6010root fill and cap, 7018 root fill and cap... then you have to be a 3block testing for your redseal to do the 6G pipe test which can be traded for a B-Pressure welding ticket in Alberta.. Without that pipe ticket you wont get your redseal... only exception to this is if youve been grandfathered in which I believe you have to have been on the pipeline 1992 and prior.. You can of course become a helper but still need to go write your block 1, block 2, block 3, and red seal tests.. Which much of the info you wont know unless youve studied the materials. I started as a welder and obtained my journeyman and worked in the pipeline, also worked structural and misc fab in shops.. so went back to school where they credited me block 1 steel fab and then did my steel fab blocks quickly as I could get my hours signed off from previous shops jobs where I was fabbing anything from stairs to hand rails to agricultural equipment to parts for NASA and misc assemblies used to test their rockets. During that time a general fab shop I was working at got busted by CWB for not having a QC guy so I got sent for a 3 week level 1 inspectors course and gained that cert. After that I joined the pipefitting union and became redseal in that. So I started off paying for schooling and the rest was basically free. I believe these have changed now since in the province of NB their is barely any pipe welding and you only need your all position FCaW and SMaW tickets in order to write your red seal.

I’m a 16 year old freshman living in California, and the reason I find welding interesting is the hands on experience that is involved. I’m hoping that one day I will become a welder so that I can make good money. Right now I’m just searching all of TH-cam for any research I can get from professional welders such as yourself. 👨‍🏭 👍

I learned in high school. The Tulsa recruiter came in and showed off what a TWS top student can do. He showed 2 coke cans welded butt end to butt end. Looked pretty rough but he said it was pretty difficult to do. I quietly got up and went into the shop and took 2 Mountain Dew cans from the trash, tigged them up while he was talking and took my seat. When he asked if we had any questions, I came to the front and asked “what the difference was between his ‘coupon’ and mine?” He looked puzzled and said no. I said, “this one (TWS student) took 2 years and $18K to get this quality. Mine took two semesters at a free public high school.” The Tulsa weld school people didn’t come back the next year. While that was just an arrogant kid showing off a trick, it was a real lesson to the class. Jobs I’ve been on welding as either a welder or foreman, never has a new hire showed me a transcript or certificate. Hell, just bc you’re certified doesn’t mean it’s going to count at that site. Guys that weld around the farm, in my opinion, are far better hands than trade school hands simply because in school, the practice isn’t what the job is. NEVER , in 20+ years of welding, have I ever had to join 2 plates with a perfect, clean, well fit gap and a millscale free backing strap in a 3G position set at a comfortable height. My advice, when practicing at home or school, set your part on the floor or behind something to get used to welding in weird positions and around obstacles. I.e. real life.

I think Welding school is important because it really starts you off with the basics so you don't look as green. You have a good understanding on the fundamental characteristics of the arc and machine options. I started at the bottom after trade school but with experience you gain more knowledge. The more you know will help you with situations where it can help you break out and pass that RT test.

I would suggest being a welder helper first and foremost. Getting the experience with the welders while on pipelines is priceless. I feel I acquired some great fabricating knowledge by welder helping while working building pig launchers, compressor stations, etc. Someone is always supplying keys of knowledge out there; the more you are involved, the more keys you collect to open doors of opportunity!

I went to wldking school and got my first job--the job i have right now. And that job keeps a roof over my head. So for me it was mor than important, because I went to college to be an English teacher but wound up really disliking the public school system. Butas you said, Austin, I have gone 3 weld tests since then because I would like to make more money, but I could't pass the weld tests. I had never used the MIG wire they used, I was asked to TIG weld aluminum. and galvanized steel pipe, and one test gave me a spray transfer challenge for literally 90 Degrees vertical, and I thought my welds on that test were really good, but nope, they didn't like what I brought to the table. So , yeah, it's a giant world of welding out there and the only way to get good is to go whre you want to go and try your best. OTJ, baby.

i was working as a carpenter and had achance to take some welding classes and took cause i wanted to learn. during this time i ended up working in the precast business and was eventually was put to work as a welder. that was thirty years ago and im still going strong. i teach welding in 4H and tell my kids yes to welding school because of all the different skills they will learn but nothing beats experience.
and as i also say all the time. run your welder not your mouth
one other quick note. no mater what it is if you want to get ahead you only need to do three things:
    1 show up earilly
    2 stay late
3 give more than asked in the middle
my son is sssooo tired of hearing both things from me.

Welding school,it’s my opinion that one should attend a school to learn how to weld with different techniques and to learn all that they can about different rods and methods. I’m a self taught welder however I don’t make a living as a welder. I weld out of necessity and I like to fabricate things. I’ve thought about going to a welding school to learn more about the technology and techniques however I’m and old man over 70 and there isn’t a welding school close. Finely after many years our county school board has starting building a trade school to teach welding and other trades better late than never. Learning all you can about a trade that you make a living from is essential. And most of this will be leaned from actual experience of doing the job.

I took welding classes that were offered at my local college, but never pursued it for a living, as I was afraid of heights & refused to work higher than I could safely jump, wasnt told of ground work, never even knew of it until maybe a decade ago, my area isnt a hot bed of pipeline activity. growing up my best friends dad started teaching me when I was 9, so I wound up being best welder in my class, but that was in the late 1980's. so yes college was beneficial, but hands on by someone taking time when I was a kid was better for me, I love welding, but this is all new to me, on angles, math, and pipe. I figure I should take to it pretty quick, but who knows.

I went to a local junior college near my house in Texas called Hill College and took their 2 year welding program. I actually have an associates degree of applied science in welding technology lol. I switched to night classes for my second year and started working 5/12s in a local fab shop migging and tigging and then going to night classes 4 nights a week. I did learn a lot of the basics in school and really just got a lot of hood time. I then got a job as a helper and it wasn't long at all before I broke out. If I were to do it again I'm not sure what I would do lol. I did learn a lot of valuable info in both the school and fab shop that I just soaked up. I feel like if I would've went straight to being a helper I could've broke out a little sooner, however I don't count it as a waste of time because I learned a lot of valuable stuff (different processes, metallurgy, tips and tricks in a fab shop) Whether you go to school or not, you need to be a helper first.

    makes much more sense.
I learned welding working with millwright's and my uncle's at the family mine. Very little pipe, but tons of repairs, I started by hard facing buckets, crushed jaws and hammers, dozer blades, etc.
Now I'm an old fart 60yrs, and still never did large pipe, I do however, build lots of pipe fencing, H frames and corner sets.
