The books are deep and complex, the author did an excellent job with these stories. The movies were a decent adaptation but left a lot of important info unexplained. A lot of your questions are answered very well in the books. I'm not even sure where to begin explaining things, lol, it might be worth a quick google if you don't want to read the entire trilogy. If you pay close attention in these movies, Snow actually never lies once. He’s very up front and quite honest about everything, and his motivation, though his actions are in fact incredibly brutal, is in to just keep Panem from falling apart. Absolute masterfully written villain!

He is definitely one of the better and more unique villains in a while. My only criticism is that he and the Capitol didn't really try that hard to avoid a rebellion - what did they think was going to happen with all these random beatings and killings of people for something as simple as making a hand sign?
The movie acts like everything hinges on Katniss (because she's the hero of course), but I don't think the rebellion happened because she was just so inspirational and because she made unscripted comments about Rue, it happened because of the Capitol's brutality.
Seems like the best thing to do would be to make Katniss and Peeta act just like the other entitled Capitol members living in luxury to kill her popularity, back off the cruelty and violence, and maintain the status quo. I dunno, maybe there are reasons that wouldn't work but I don't think the book or movie told us.

@@bobdondaI mean it’s explained pretty well how they stop stuff like rebellions. They scare people so badly that they don’t even want to think about rebelling cause they don’t want to put themselves or loved ones in danger. You do something rebellious, you get killed or they will cut your tongue out or something. What they do is use fear tactics with the beatings and everything. Despite the Captitals brutality, even Katniss doesn’t want to rebel out of fear for her loved ones. Katniss is dangerous to Snow and the Capital because she brings hope, which Snow says is the one thing that is stronger than fear. This is why people are finally rebelling. They’ve never had that hopeful spark before Katniss

So, the mockingjay in the movies has been associated with Katniss. Cinna showing support for Katniss is not safe at that point because she's been causing uprisings. But mockingjays in general are already a symbol of rebellion.
This isn't mentioned in the movies or explained very well, but the Capital makes genetically engineered animals (and possibly people as well) as weapons. Not just for the Hungergames, but for war.
They made a bird, jabberjay, that could repeat anything it heard, so they would sit in a tree and look innocent and basically work as a recording device without drawing attention. The people in the districts caught on pretty quickly though and fed the birds false information, so they were useless. The Capital then released the birds since they were a failed project, and kind of hoped they would die, but they bred with wild mockingbirds and made mockingjays. Mockingjays can't repeat words, but they can repeat melodies.
Mockingjays became a symbol of the Capital's failure. So Cinna not only showing support for Katniss, but for the rebellion in public like that? Super dangerous, and he knew what he was doing.

From what I can remember, the famous three-finger hand gesture actually originates from District 12, and is supposed to be a sign of goodbye, respect and unity, often used in funerals. Maybe that's why the Peacekeepers in 12 didn't react as much because they know what the gesture actually means, instead of a sign of resistance what the other districts perceived like in 11.

Also the hand sign was also used at their reaping one year ago to the same situation. So there was already a precident set.
And to further this, the man in District 11 combined the gesture with the 4 tone melody which was from District 11. Combining both could heave the meaning of unity between the districts against the capitol, which the couldn't tolerate by any means. Idk. if they'd shot him if he only did the hand gesture

The first time in the movie that Peeta’s amputation/new prosthetic affected the plot is when he falls during the interview. 8:58
Later he says “stop looking at me like I’m wounded”. He struggles in the arena because of his new disability (on top of being electrocuted). Peetas leg is so important to plot and characterization (not to mention representation), I wish the movies didn’t cut it.

Small thing but: In the books, people in District 12 typically can't swim, because there are no bodies of water large enough to learn how to. Katniss ONLY knows how to swim because she and her father snuck out of the district fence to hunt, and he taught her in a lake out in the woods. As with the hunting, she only even has a chance to win because she has broken out of the system before. Additionally to not knowing how to swim, Peeta has a new prosthetic leg- in the books, Katniss has to tornique his leg from the wound and he eventually loses it. Finnick saves him from drowning (District 4 is coastal) and thus Katniss even considers trusting him at all.

That's a funny question because that is one of the main things these movies get wrong. In the books the main threat in the games is starvation. Katniss almost constantly thinks about her next meal and is close to starving at all times. That's why her destroying the supplies was so important. They obviously kill each other but hunger is far more prevalent and meant to show the districts how hard life would be without the capitol.
The movies focus only on the action

Well there is another interpretation that should be obvious to anyone not only learning US history.
Panem et circensis or in English bread and circuses is a term for superficial appeasement of the population.
It originates from ancient Rome where emperors like Augustus or Trajan were criticised of tactically offering entertainments and cheap grain to appease the people... or were the people criticised for falling for that? Either or both.
Anyways this is why Collins chose Panem as the name of the post-apocalyptic US. And this is what is done with the games. They both appease the population of the capitol and in a different way the districts.
But they also uphold the illusion that the capitol held the power and control over distributing the resources of the districts among the districts instead of the districts fighting wach other over these resources.
It is implied that districts like 1 and 12, rich in ore and coal, would face hunger without the benevolent leadership of the capitol.

    • @tilltronje1623

@@michaelklaus that is not "another" interpretation, that is literally the point of the trilogy. Manipulation of the populace through bread and circuses. Coupled with hefty media manipulation on both sides. The games are merely the backdrop for that, the killing is not the main point of the story

@tilltronje1623 well I didn't want to undermine you observation that starvation is a huge threat in the 74th hunger games by saying: "Ackchyually" 😅
And then people point to the prequel where starvation is also a major plot point but I would like to point out that Haymitch also notes other threats like exposure. So starvation was not meant as the main threat in the books before the prequel.

Finnick and Joanna are my favorite new characters in this one. You'll find out more about Finnick's back story in the next one. He is a fan favorite.

Random comment, but it's not necessarily that Katniss has gotten better with the bow (not saying she didn't) but the reason in the last movie that she didn't hit the target was because she's not used to the bow. She's been shooting with a simple hunting bow made of wood, and the one at the training centre is made of metal. Same with the arrows. The weight and strange feeling of it means it's not odd that her first shot was off. Instead, she shows how incredible her talent is by adjusting to the bow immediately after and hitting the bullseye.

Super fun fact is that all of the Districts are land locked except for District 4 and fenced in so nobody is supposed to know how to swim. So they designed these games to give people as little of a chance from the beginning as possible. Katniss knows how to swim cause I believe her Dad taught her. Also most of them only have knowledge of survival from their games so if there wasn’t a jungle or water in their games they would be completely unprepared for this scenario and have minimal survival skills.

The Cinna thing was awful in the books, and then she goes straight to the arena, which has water. In the book, the stakes are so much higher. Peeta has lost his leg, so he has a prostethic and he doesn't know how to swim. Almost no one in most districts does, because they are isolated from water. Except 4, which is fishing (Finnick and Mags' district). Maybe the training facilities for 1 and 2 also have swimming. But Katniss learned with her dad, just like hunting. He would teach her in a lake in the forest. Peeta can't swim, so he was actually trapped on his stage thingie. I think, to be a bit quicker with the scenes, they chose to have him swim and all, but in the book you can see her desperation, because she is determine to make Peeta the winner. Also, it's with him in the beach where she first feels hunger in regards to passion, when they are kissing. In the cave, it was for show. In the beach, for real. Another meaning to the word hunger, which is prominent in so many ways in the series.
The books are all narrated through Katniss' point-of-view, which is why it's hilarious at times. Because we see her doubt people, and judge them very wrongly (Peeta in the first, Finnick and Johanna in the second). There are a few hilarious moments, such as when Finnick goes to revive Peeta, she is confused as to why he is kissing him. She is a great narrator, because she doesn't trust anyone and she is not the most observant. She has no idea of any plot. Katniss never planned to defy the capitol, she genuinely just wanted to survive and go back to her sister. Her empathy though, it does wonders. Peeta helps, of course, and while he is also genuine, he is aware that those moves play to an audience, a thing that Katniss does not think when she does them.

It's called 'the Hunger Games' because of the mechanism that you noted with Gale. The outer Districts who were part of the losing side of the Civil War of Pan Em are kept on rations of food that are designed to keep them hungry and weak. The only people who can get more food for their family are the children who are eligible for the Games. If they want to get more food rations, they put their name into the Reaping a second (third, fourth, ... forty-second time). In this way, no one in the Conquered Districts is able to eat enough to stay strong enough for armed resistance. And the only way that someone could legally get strong enough as an individual family would be to give up their child's life. Not really a hero the Districts can rally around, is it? Big man, willing to trade increased risk of your child's life being taken in the Reaping just so you can stuff your face each night while your neighbors starve. Not really a Robin Hood figure, eh? But Katniss is. She slips over the fence and comes back with her own food, separate from the Games system.
So why have children in a system like that? Why not just stop marrying and having offspring at all? Because kids eligible for the Reaping are the only way that you can get enough food to be even remotely healthy. And each time you do that, you risk more and more that your child will be the human sacrifice in that year's Hunger Games. Why?Because you and your family got hungry. Why? Because your ancestors dared to defy The Capital and the Inner Districts of Pan Em. How can you dare to have a child in that kind of world? But how can you survive if you don't?
Welcome to the 75th Annual Hunger Games.

Astounding reaction to Catching Fire! One of the reasons I love this sequel is how they showed us that even after winning, Katniss, Peeta, and the other victors were easily traumatized and scarred just from surviving the Games. I love the fact it still shows how Katniss’ sacrifice inspired not just people in the Districts but people also in the Capitol as well. Effie is the prime example for change in the Capitol. Before, she just did her job and didn’t care about tributes because there was no guarantee that they’d survive. However with Katniss and Peeta, she came to not only care for them, but she even started to open herself to up and started to see the flaw in the system. Now even she is starting to rebel against the Capitol. Also Joanna’s sneak peak scene is one my fave scenes, especially for the fact that she winks at Hamish. The revelation of Heavensbee’s loyalty to Katniss and the rebellion was so amazingly surprising as they showed him being a masterminded game maker and used President Snow’s lust for revenge on Katniss as a pawn in the ultimate game of deception. I can’t wait for the Mockingjay reactions!!!! Also if you loved Phillip Seymore, I must recommend you to check out his movie Twister with Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. 🏹🔥❤️❤️‍🔥

Haymitches game was probably one of the scariest ones to me because his game was the 50th aka the second quarter quell and the special rule for that game was the contestants would be doubled so two male and female tributes from each district making the usual 24 contestants skyrocket up to 48 so he’s odds were even worst. He ended up winning but just like Katniss he won while making the Capitol look dumb in a sense because he uses the capitols forcefield as a weapon. It was him and one other tribute left, haymitch was about to die and he ran to the edge of the arena. The other tribute threw an axe at him but he ducked. The axe hit the forcefield and came back and killed the tribute allowing haymitch to win. The Capitol took this as defiance cause it made them look dumb that a tribute died not from haymitch but from their own creation so they killed haymitches family. That’s why he is a drunk. Haymitch and Lucy gray are the only other winners from district 12 beside katniss and peeta. In the books of catching fire Katniss and peeta watch haymitches game tape. His act of using the forcefield I think also gives her the idea of using the forcefield at the end of the movie with the lightning arrow

So the quarter Quell took place every 25 years where there would be special rules put into place. The envelopes were kept in a wooden box to be opened before the reaping at these quarter-century games. The first one that took place, 25th Hunger Games, instead of a random drawing for the reaping, the citizens of each district were required to vote on who would "represent" their district. For the 50th Hunger Games, they selected 4 people from each district instead of the normal 2. This being the 75th year, President Snow pulled the "sealed envelope" but in reality it would be written into play by the current president to best inflict fear/gain control at the time of the drawing.
Also, in regards to the Mockingjay, the symbol itself draws its meaning from history, back in the days of the initial rebellion, the capital created Jabberjays, which were able to mimic any sound or words they heard. They are the birds that mimicked the screaming in the games here. Jabberjays were used to collect information on rebel plans, but when the rebels learned of this tactics, they began to feed the capital false information and so won a victory on that front. The capital knowing that their Jabberjays were unreliable bred them out of existence with mockingbirds, thus the mockingjay became a symbol of victory, whether large or small.

    1) People are quick to hate on District 1, but it's important to remember that they are victims too. Each district is tortured a different way. In district 1 they are expected/required to live in opulence and excess or be punished for being unappreciative. They know that most other districts are starving, but they are made to/expected to eat to the point of making themselves sick and pretending they are happy about it instead of having the district share with the others. When they don't fall in line they get turned into the capital and made into Avoxes (people that are tortured and then have their tongues cut out and forced into servitude) or worse...mutts. Think of Effie, woman that draws the tributes' names at the reaping. Her and the TV host, Caesar Flickerman, ...they have a job to do and that is to make these grotesque moments FEEL like entertainment or else. EVERYONE is scared, even the Presidents' own family members. The games are NOT "entertainment" to anyone. The citizens of Panem are ALL terrified of their government because they know the grotesque and twisted things it does to people. They watch the games because they wanna see their people and try to support them if/when they can. Being a sponsor demands a lot of money so the sponsor gifts are rare, but people try. You have to watch the games to see what will be needed. In this book the people of District 1 were ALL angry that the Victors were being put into the games; they weren’t cheering happily like in the movie.
    2) Haymitch was one of District 12's winners. He's an alcoholic because he was a winner when he was 16 and since then has been required to be the mentor of countless tributes only to see them ALL die for nearly 24 years. He’d won his Games by using the force field against the Capitol. Though it was a Capitol creation, Haymitch was able to use it to his advantage and win the Games with it. The Victors receive income from the Capitol for life, are given a special status in their districts and are allowed to live in the wealthiest part of their district called the Victors' Village with their families. Their District is given supplies of food and other things to survive, while the lone victor (except of The 74th Hunger Games since there is 2 victors) is bathed in riches. Most of them become very popular all throughout all of Panem. The Capital, however, can summon victors whenever they want and make demands on them. This is clarified later and in more detail later.

Head gamemaker is just the lead guy in charge THAT year. Seneca Crane was the Head GM last year.
If you watch the latest film made, the prequel Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, youll learn a whole lot about who was involved in the earlier/origin story of the HG and their design.
Last name of Prominent people in the capitol that were around then that have characters in these ones; Heavensbee, Crane, Snow, Flickerman.
You guy should write down a cheat sheet of names/face for each character you have met so far. Itll make your reflection talks easier. :)

Suzanne Collins is a genius! To make the sequel of hunger games, basically be a even more Souped-up version of the first book's games. While simultaneously setting up the plot of the third and final book. A lesser writer would have milked this incredible idea into 5 or more books like we see today. Since she made it a trilogy you get an incredibly tight well written series. Based on an incredibly well thought out world and games.

Hunger games is for me the best book adaptation I’ve ever seen. You guys said everything, you 15 minutes in it and the emotion, specially the pain, is THERE. You feel it, it makes you hate the Capitol without even needing to see much of them actually.
By the way, no one told Peeta and Katniss about the plan because they knew none of them would agree with people sacrificing themselves like that for them. Peeta volunteered to avoid Haymich going in, and Katniss volunteered in the place of her sister, it’s simply not their characters. They are the ones willing to sacrifice themselves, so they needed to be left out in the dark.
And the Mockingjay is because she had the pin in the first game. People saw it with her when she was taking care of Rue’s body for example and automatically made it a symbol.

agree, I feel like it is one of the few franchises based on books that the movies actually surpass them. 1 & 2 are basically on the same level as the books, but the 3rd book is a downgrade imo, while the movies keep it up really good.

I love it when you pick up little details like what haymitch said to katniss and finnick.
Just to add: the transition of mockingjay bird in the end foreshadows the plot. the bounded bird loses the chain, spread its wings while catching fire and ready to fight back. The third part shows the mockingjay bird without the ring/cage because snow loses the grip of power. I love these little details in movies.

Haymitch is a past winner. He won the 50th Hunger Games (the Second Quarter Quell) where there were double the amount of tributes. Each Quarter Quell had a special twist to the games. The First Quarter Quell the districts had to have an election to choose their tributes. The Second Quarter Quell had double the number of tributes. The Third the tributes were past victors (though it is implied that it was changed to get Katniss into the arena again as she was the only living female victor from district 12).

It's rare that a second or third character is my favorite one, but Haymitch is right at the top. "Girl wake up, this trip doesn't end when you get back home... you never get off this train" and then "There are no victors, only survivors". This makes you understand why he is the way he is. The propaganda makes everyone believes that if you win the hunger games, you get to live the rest of your life in peace. That you only have to go out once a year to give a hand to the kids when they get reaped but after that, you live a life of luxury. That is not true. Like Joanna says "There's no one left that I love" because the Capital uses your loved ones you keep you in check. They threaten what you hold dear to basically make a slave out of you. So the real winners of the Hungers Games are the other 23 tributes... because at least they are free now

Your reaction is the reaction I connected the most with. I appreciated that you recognized how messed up the system was, its impact and meaning. Don’t stop reminding us :) and thank you for not doing what many reactors & YT commentators focus on: make the story about being on a Peeta/Gale team (you talked about the dynamics of Katniss & G & P within the context, brilliant!! Thank you!) or clamor for a Haymitch/Finnick story ignoring what it means (i.e., watching kids kill kids & eventually become numb to it). By doing that, they fail to see they are participating & reveling in the distractions the story talks about & proving Snow & Coin right: Panem (which means Bread & Circuses) is what people want while the system continues to take advantage of them. Collins was reluctant to write the prequel & doesn’t want to continue the series for those reasons. Thank you for your honest reactions!
Pudgey’s face when Snow walked into the room, lol. You looked like you wanted to reach through the screen, lol!

1:06 this was exactly my mindset. I was wondering how the sequel was going to work because clearly Katniss can't be in the games again. It totally blew my mind and felt like the greatest plot twist in history when they announced they're doing a Games with former winners.
I guess I was a little naive because some people predicted it but I totally didn't see it coming AT ALL, I loved the plot twist

I just wanted to say how refreshing it is to watch you two. I have watched many many HG reactions and the fact that you guys understand what's going on and can sometimes even predict from the clues that are given is very enjoyable to watch. I've seen so many watch these and not get a lot of it. Which is fine, because we all process and understand things differently but for some of them I truly don't think they're invested and just don't care to pay attention ; as long as they're just posting and getting those views ya know? So it's nice to see that you do enjoy and pay attention to the details. Love it!!
Fun side note to this book without spoilers: The tributes that were in on the plot of getting Katniss and Peeta out had a communication system with the outside on when the rescue would take place. It was through bread. That's all I'll say. I implore everyone who hasn't, to read this amazing series. So much had to be left out

They do quarter quell every 25 years. Haymitch won in the 50th hunger games which is the 2nd quarter quell and that time they doubled the amount of tributes. They reaped 2 girls and 2 boys each district making them 48 instead of 24

1.The previous Quarter Quell's were just as messed up as this one. The first Quell, the districts has to hold elections to vote who'd they'd send into the area, and for the second Quell they had to pay double the amount of tributes. Those were the Games Haymitch won. A friend of Katniss's mother went that year, too, and survived to the last few.
    2. I have a personal fan theory that Cashmere and Gloss's parents were Hunger Games winners, too.

gale's whipping in the book was very different 1st the reason it was cause he was hunting outside the fence with katniss & came to the head peacekeepers house with a turkey since he is usually the one that buys them BUT the new guy replaced him so he was caught red handed by the new guy who them strung up the bird above gale to show the charge and them just started wailing on him his back was shredded & the boy was out cold other peacekeepers tried to tell the new guy that's enough you don't get to kill him for that and the guy just knocked HIM out too cause the goal WAS to kill Gale to send a message & when Katniss interfeared she was struck in the face with the whip not punched
now where the scene leads is the same but that was very different also in Katnisses house Gale was stripped naked on the table to access other wounds we couldn't see so nothing got infected KATNISS got very uncomftable & turned away but her 13 year old sister didn't care he was a patient the boy bits may as well be a throw pillow for how much she cared which kinda leads to the other victors picking on Katniss for being so innocent
