In today's video, I talk about my stats such as the SAT, SAT subject tests, APs, and GPA and the extracurricular activities that got me into UC Berkeley!
As I said in the video, I truly truly hope that my words in the video resonate with some of you who might be dealing with some stress, anxiety issues during the college app process. Of course, my stats and ecs are just one example and there may be other cases with different combos of scores and activities. I know I am a year late, but thank you much for making this video. This is honestly so encouraging knowing that there are people that have/had the same fears as me going into the process.

I'm watching this video as an eighth grader as I am picking out my freshman classes tonight. I don't know when it started but I've always been expected to go to Berkeley and I do want to. I feel like to get into Berkeley I'm going to have to do a lot of Extra Curriculars and won't have time for a lot of highschool memories. Did you have time for hanging out with friends and doing things outside of school? Also how did you study for tests, what did you find worked best for you? This video was very well explained and helped me with a lot, thank you!
hi! thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! to be 100% honest, there was a good amount of time in my hs life when i prioritized my studies & ecs over socializing. i totally understand sometimes it gets overwhelmingly hard to balance things out, which gives even extra stress on top of everything else. but i want to say that getting into the school you want to go to doesn't always necessarily mean you can't spend time with friends, family members, or even yourself ! (i personally overlooked self-dates during hs and even to this day wish i knew it better) plus you can make hs memories w your extra curricular friends too if this is applicable !
for tests, i'm not sure if i can be of big help lol but i solved lots and lots of practice problems. standardized tests are eventually about reading the question's intention so once i got more used to reasoning like that it helped !
I got into UC Berkeley as a physics major by transferring from a community college; I never took a SAT and never did any extracurriculars; just had a 4.0 gpa. Plus I entered as a junior and saved insane money and only owed $2k from a small loan (I also got a scholarship). I hear people owing over $100k, which just sounds insane
Honestly, community college was harder than UC Berkeley, which sound strange, but 'top schools' just have a lot of prestige and a lot more money, so they can do more, but they really aren't more difficult than anywhere else. Cal curved so much that if you got a C in a physics class, you'd end up with an A-, so that is one of the reasons it was a lot easier.
If you really want to go to UC Berkeley, just flunk out of high school like I did, then go to CC; that way, you don't have to do lame ass SAT or extracurriculars and the only thing that matters is the GPA (and 4.0 is highest in college, so no stupid "I have higher than a 4.0 gpa" nonsense). My 'extracurriculars' were skateboarding and doing whatever I wanted

When you applied did you get an addition email of them inviting to submit a letter of rec?
i didn't get the email but i've heard some of my friends received the email !
Why didn't you send in your Calc AB score, you got a 5!
i had to send either ALL my scores or NONE so i chose none ! i ended up using the credit in college tho :)
Im a freshman, and majority of this year I went through a LOT of traumatic stuff that affected my grades drastically… Im taking all honors and because of what i went through i sunk really low, I have like a 2.8ish-3.0ish unweighted, and ik that its good but i really want to go to berkeley and the expecation is higher, i plan on self studying some APs next yr (AP bio n AP seminar) with like subjects ive alr studied and have done well in, do you think it will count as much as a regular AP? next yr im taking 3 regular classes, 1 elective class, 2 honors classes and 1 AP…. if i manage to do everything sucessfully, and i get straight As throughout the entire yr, do you think i can manage to bring myself back up to like a solid 3.5? im also doing color guard, winterguard, starting a club, my nonprofit, MUN, DECA, and Mocktrial but im worried its not gonna be enough, also what is some advice for the PSATs next yr from ur experience? sorry for the long ass paragraph 💀😭
lol what i mean abt my GPA being “good” i mean like good if i want to get into a 70% acceptance rate schl, like im can get INTO a college, but its not like GREAT for a 32% acceptance rate schl for example
@@thendrelk hi!! first of all, i think it's a GREAT start that you're making concrete plans this school year to take more classes and a lot of strong EC activities. i have to say i'm impressed! :)
in terms of gpa, i believe if u take multiple honors and ap courses as u mentioned and work hard to get good scores, u should def be able to get it back to 3.5 and even higher! but i also want to put it out that gpa isn't necessarily the most "important" factor of your application. it's def a big portion BUT it essentially doesn't serve any bigger role than a solid basis to build your character & stories.
i'm sure that you will do amazing with all plans you shared with me so i hope you start the year with more confidence and faith in yourself! 💌 YOU GOT THIS!!

Hi, My kid has 3.38 GPA with a 1450 SAT(Super score of 1500). I read that UCs need a minimum of 3.4 for non-residents. Do you think we can still apply? does UC rounds up the 3.38 to 3.4? pls suggest. we are from Texas.
UC overlooks SAT, but your grade calculations in TX may be different than how UC calculates it, I would run the grades through UC calculator to check if it is >3.4

i wish i have a clear answer but it's hard to give a yes or no opinion to this question because there are so many things that come into play for college admissions! BUT i'm sure in the end it WILL work out. wishing you the best of luck!🍀
