    In this video I will demonstrate how to export any project to 4K directly in Final Cut Pro X. This is achieved through upscaling (or converting) any pre-existing timeline, for example 1080p HD, to 4K. Additionally we will explore different export options and their specific purposes; for web (TH-cam, FaceBook, Instagram) and for highest quality (client work, archive). I will split this video into two main parts. First, how to export a 4k project as a 4k video. Second, how to export a 1080p project in a 4k video. First we're going to start off with the 4k project, in this case I have an iPhone 11 unboxing, you can see this is a 4k at 30fps project. How do we export this as a 4k file? First make sure that nothing in your timeline is selected, click on the share menu and select master file option. From here you can change the title, description, creator information and add tags. Seeing as this is a 4k project, final cut will automatically export this 4k file at 3840x2160 also maintaining the original frame rate. The file type in this case is .mov, this will run perfectly on Mac OS, the file size is 1.66 gigabytes. There’s two main exports that I use. First, h.264 video codec, this is perfect for uploading to the web this is how I export and upload every youtube video. This codec strikes a great balance between maintaining much of the original quality while also being compressed to smaller file sizes. Let’s say you want to export a top quality or a best quality export. For that there is the second option, apple pro res prores 422. The file is still 4k at 30fps you'll notice a much larger file size and will give you a best quality export, great if you're handing a video to a client. I don't advise using this video codec for uploading to the internet because for example youtube will heavily compress your video.Therefore whether you upload as an h.264 or 422 export the quality that will ultimately be visible to your viewers on youtube will be very very similar and is not worth the extra data or time uploading. But how do you upscale and export a HD project in 4K? If we look at this other project’s specifications, this is a 1080p hd project. Let’s create a new project in 4k so we're going to go under the same pre-existing event we'll go up to file select new and then project, click use custom settings, this will give you manual control over all of your projects parameters. Change the video resolution from 1080p to 4k but you can also change it to 8k you can even have a vertical ratio for say uploading to instagram. Select 4K and click ok, here we have a blank 4k project. Now we’re going to simply select everything we want to carry over, all clips audio and titles, press command a, press command c. Next go into the new project, drag the playhead to the start and press command v to paste. All the video has now been copied over as well as the elements. Because the aspect ratio between 4k and 1080p is consistent the image will still fill the frame fully but you will notice it does have to render as indicated by these little dots. We've taken 1080p hd footage and dragged this into a 4k timeline, this is effectively upscaling 1080p footage to 4k, this why it has to render. Several benefits to upscaling to 4k. First, this will be scaled properly to match the resolution of a 4k display. Second if you're uploading to youtube a 4k project will be given a higher bit rate. The video has now finished rendering, let’s export this project. In the share menu click master file and it will now show the 4k resolution, from here we're able to export this project as 4k and this is how you export any video in 4k through final cut whether it be 1080p 720p or any resolution this can be scaled up and altered using custom settings when creating your project.
    Thank you for watching, let me know if you have any questions.

    This was really helpful. I've seen another method of doing this, and wasn't sure if it was accurate. I've seen where you can "select" the project, and the "modify" the project, and change it into 4K from there. At that point, you can export in 4K. Is that another way of doing this properly, or is creating the new 4K project timeline the best way? Thanks.

    • @DREZZYFILMS
      @DREZZYFILMS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that method of modifying works in ppr. In Final cut you have to create a 4k timeline, but they're all the same vs downscaling it from 4k to 1080 I think that Kinda of mess your scaling through your edit and you have to go through timeline and readjust each 4k clip to match 1080.

    Sorry, I find this confusing. I have a 4k video shot at 60FPS, an 11 minute video that I want to upload to TH-cam. However the file is over 4 gig. TOO BIG. How can I change that? OR do I have to shoot in a lower frame rate?

    • @DionMedia
      @DionMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, 4 gig is reasonable for an 11 minutes 4K video. A solution is to export it in a lower resolution like 1080p

      Hi, thanks for your comment. Once the project is exported in 4K, TH-cam will automatically recognise it as a 4K video and therefore it will playback in 4K after processing (can take a few hours after uploading)!

    I was editing 4K footage in a 4K timeline in FCPX, which was making my system slow down when using plugins such as MFilmLook, MTitle, Film Convert Nitrate, & Neat Video, so I modified 4K timeline to 1080, now all the audio is gone, footage is silent - even the volume gauge bar has no sound indicator. Any ideas what happened to my audio and how to resolve this issue, other than modifying 1080 timeline back to 4k? Thanks.

    Hey there, I have a project at the moment that when I try to export a Pro Res HQ final version FCPX just won't do it on my current project. If I open another project no problem, it does it. Does anybody have an idea why this may happen? Same camera, same settings, everything is the same, just different projects. I have tried restarting my computer and fcpx several times but it still won't export it. It starts to export and a >mov file icon shows up on my desktop but then when finished, the files disappears and never exports completely? Could this be due to a title or something I am using? Thanks
