Three I use all the time. One, hold down option key, click drag any asset to duplicate it. Works on Mac OSX too, not just FCPX. Two, hit M twice to add a marker, with options (standard, to do, chapter), at the playhead. Three, shift-command-V to paste attributes, after a cmd-C of course. Great for quickly replicating attributes from clip to clip.
I have watched this video so many times, and it's so helpful! Thank you for breaking this down as straightforward as possible. I always refer back to this when starting back up with FCP. Great video. One point to add with deleting cache if you would still rather have the convenience of keeping them in your Library: Inside FCP, you can select your library and go to File, Delete Generated Library Files and you can remove from there. A bit more hidden but still keeps everything together. :)
The reason I like to delete form the finder is so that I don’t need to launch Final Cut. Often I’ll just go through all my recent completed projects and want to quickly clear them out

Something I’ve discovered since writing the above: after I moved my cache externally I found that my Mac would drop frames when playing back (it’s the current 16 inch). When I moved the cache back, it no longer does that. Interesting. Just FYI if you experience that. 😀
@@SuitcaseMonkey Maybe it's because of your external drive's speed? What drive are you using? I'm planning to buy a portable SSD soon and I find Tyler's tips very useful. But if this is the problem then I'll have to dig deeper to find out.
One of the first videos I've actually stopped, went to get a pen to take notes then watched at 0.75 in places so as not to miss anything! The library folder in a root folder idea, Alt+[ Alt+ ], favouriting sections of clips, snapshot saving and even audio ducking using the range option... I know that I will now use every single one of these in my workflow. Tyler, if you're ever in central Scotland, I owe you a beer👍🏻
One alternative to creating compound clips of A-roll (or any clip for that matter) is to "Open" the clip. Select the clip in the Browser or Timeline and go to Clip > Open Clip (you can assign it to a keyboard shortcut). This lets you adjust anything - color, audio, transform tools, etc - to the clip and have it be reflected anywhere in the Library.
Tyler this was really valuable video. Last week and last year in general I had all the media storage problem you’ve mention with fcpx. Now, I’ll just sit on my computer and copy step by step what you did and I’ll forget about it. Thank you. O yea, I love the colors that you’re seen the world in.

I use FCP quite a bit and what I learned new in this video was the favourites tip and making a compound clip for longer A roll so you can global change later. I knew about both functions before, but not in this context. My contribution is to customise the 'B' key to blade tool (without command), do the same for left right brackets (as you've already done), 'Z' to direct zoom all in, '+', '-' to direct zoom in and out and so on and so forth. All the stuff you use a lot, make it a direct key. Speeds up everything wonderfully! Great video buddy!
Thank you so much for these great tips. The one on storage location really helped me a lot. Leaving media in folders instead of in library saves a lot of space. Last week fcpx was slowing down on my Mac. Since I followed your advice, the problem was gone! Now when I am done with a project, I deleted cache folder and proxy media, optimized media and my computer space is back!

These are fantastic tips, aimed for some obscure reason at me personally and very effectively. So many shortcut tutorials out there on FCPX but I think I took detailed notes on 8 out of 10. All real time savers, thanks Tyler.
Thank you for the cache tip! I had soooo many headaches with this when doing virtual concerts and the render files were getting out of control. One tip I have is detaching the audio Control-Shift-S for deleting audio clips instead of lowering the gain.

Lots of good stuff here. I've created compound clips after I'd done the bulk of the work. Never thought to do the base editing with one. Interesting concept as it lets you leave decisions like master adjustments till later. NOT CREATING AN EVENT FIRST? Waaaa? If you didn't create the event first in FCP7 and earlier you'd be dead. Old habits die hard. The one great trick I just learned is to use an adjustment layer for closeups. I wished I'd known that years ago.

loving your channel! FYI, I am a long time editor and was just on the phone with apple FCP team yesterday with an absurdly weird glitch happening on my exported movies. The guy on the call checked to see how I was importing footage to FCP and turns out they dont even offer support if you import/ store footage outside the library. Very strange. He said the drag and drop method degrades the speed and integrity of FCP and should never be used. My obvious response was "uhhh what..that is all everyone does." Anyway, it was a fascinating conversation and I had never heard that before. So for my next project I will try it out...He said when the team unveiled FCP back 10 years ago or whenever, the main and first point of the presentation was the efficiency of capturing and transcoding media in the library.
I purchased you Log 3 lit and used on my R5 with a Ninja V and the image was incredible SOOC. I was filming border collies in a lush green grass field. The results without any adjustments were spectacular! Thank you very much! Great job!

Great video. One thing you missed that I use a good bit is when I want to archive, I’ll export the XML file. It’s essentially a blueprint of your edit. That way I don’t have keep the project or library files. If for some reason I ever needed to go back I can import the footage and the XML and it will link it all back. Also a good way to share with an editor.
One tip is that if you need to send projects to an editor somewhere else. Place your full res files in an external folder, as you did on here, set the storage locations of everything to “library” (opposite of what you did here), and when importing the footage, select, leave files in place, but also select “create proxy files”. That way, when you send the project (library) to the editor, your only sending the proxy files. Often for me makes a 30GB project around 1GB. Also when the editor is done he only needs to send the project back with no media, so it’s only a few Mb. Super fast. Hope this makes sense.

i never thought about using favorites, or about keeping the cache in the root file! i actually have the ⌘B shortcut (Split) set to just B, so i can split with one key, and i have Delete Clip set to E, and i have Trim to Playhead set to T so i can easily use that holy trinity of keys to edit as fast as possible!

One of my favorite tips is to custom set your keyboard shortcuts for slowing clips down. For example: I set shift+5 to make a clips 50% speed✨
