Don't use the 'high' suspension setting unless you really have to for clearance reasons. You will be amazed at how much better it drives off road in just auto setting. Better articulation, comfort and traction.
Yes, but even in just the normal off road height mode rather than fully extended, it is surprisingly how less comfortable the ride is compared to live axles over slow technical terrain. At higher speeds on unpaved roads and normal road height it is comfy. But too much lifting of wheels for a good ride when the going gets tough.
Yes I’ve said that again and again. I do believe however that the vehicle puts itself in off-road height when put into low range. They could change it back to normal height but then again they don’t need to be using low range anyway.
My experience I agree with the previous comment, only use the extended height if you need to. The cool thing about the Defenders air suspension is that even ground out in extended height, press the button to lower the suspension and it will go into super extended height, then if you put your foot on the brake and press the raise button for 3 seconds it will beep and go even higher, granted it will be stiff but it can get you out of trouble. As for HDC I tend to put it into manual and use the gears to slow down or speed up going down steep slopes it also saves your brakes. And to smooth out your progress and reduce jerky throttle use ATPC and use the cruise control button to adjust your speed, it really is a capable off roader.
According to the instrument panel, the Defender was in Comfort mode and not in Auto. But as could be seen, there were zero problems climbing up that hill.
@@lunamaria1048 Comfort mode is one of the Terrain Response settings that affects more than just the suspension. This is exactly the reason I commented because Comfort mode is meant for on-road driving!
Yeah, also the Jeep was aired-down. The advantages were totally with the Jeep but it still lost. I personally feel like this channel underplays the Defender every chance it can. I just took mine in a more challenging trail than this with all seasons and it slipped less than this one. It gets sorta old but eventually people will realize what an incredible vehicle the Defender truly is.
@@lunamaria1048 I own one too. A 2021 X-dynamic. I just did way more intense off-roading than this on worse tires and it slipped much less while it was rainy hard during a thunderstorm. Which version do you have?

We are getting ready to buy the new Jeep. Our 2014 had several problems but Jeep handled the problems well and kept care of the vehicle. It only has 135000 miles now and still runs great and we’ll probably keep it. The Land Rover is nice but I just can’t get myself to give up the Jeep amenities as well as it’s a great 4wd.
Seems fair to compare. They're both unibody off road image lifestyle crossovers. Underneath they're very similar. Discovery might fit too, it's very similar to the defender underneath.
Fuel economy with the 5.7 is dictated by the vehicle. My 2014 Charger R/T AWD can get 25-27 mpg on the hwy if you keep yer foot out of it. and that's with 150,000 miles on the clock
@@Ramblin_Rob Wish I could get that mileage with my '08 GC Overland 5.7 lol. I never see 20mpg... But definitely not as bad as the Toyota Land Cruiser gas mileage.
@@patrickmartin3322 totally agree, its a shame that they do such great offroad videos but this kind of easy terrain sort of kills the mood....most crossovers even are starting to be able to handle more as well
Great Video Guys! I'd have to go Jeep all the way when you look at serviceability, plus.. It's got a Hemi. The 5.7 is well sorted and a long history. 247 Land Rover dealers vs 2500 Jeep dealers. One set of slightly taller tires (as you indicated Jeeps are shorter) and that new Jeep rocks it on or off road.

@@moparproud3978 Good point! The V8 sure is a pricey option but it would be great to see a V8 and Off Road package in a base or near base trim too. @@JustinKelly I’m going to hold out hope that happens with the two row version. Which is the better daily and off road one anyways with the shorter wheelbase. I dunno. Fingers crossed
Great review .. I previously owned a Cherokee and had lots of overheating problems when desert off-roading in Egypt. I'd appreciate if you look at how the cars handle heat in future comparisons.. Cheers
I am a Defender man, but, wait a minute, that Cherokee is a beauty! I think I would prefer it, but it looks so BIG! I would probably wait a year or two and get a second hand Defender.
Maybe I'm just out of touch but i wish offroad cars would go back to being simpler. Give me old fashioned limited slip of locking diffs and skid plates with a good non electronic suspension. And traction control with just a couple modes one of which must be completely off. It's not that these new cars aren't capable it's just so much stuff to break or fail. Plus they're more expensive than they need to be.
Excellent review. Congratulations. Would like to see the GC short wb Trailhawk plus the Defender V8. On road the Defender has better road holding and steering at least for European fast contry roads, but I definitively would like to have diff locks. I do not like the poor wheel travel in the GC. Yes, the Defender is more expensive but has an incredible choice of useful extras. Defender reliability will improve with time. The new GC - I had 3 of them incl 5.9lt and I loved them all - has a lot of electronics and software gimmicks, too. Reliability to be seen as well.
After test driving a Overland today I am thoroughly impressed at the interior quality and in person the vehicle is pretty substantial and is prettier in person... Almost bit the bullet on it I was that impressed but I have to pay off my wife surgery first then we will get her a new toy.
Oddly, it's seeming like both will use trash BMW 3L engines. I had such high hopes for the Grenadier, but I think the engine choice was a big mistake. BMW is great for performance, terrible for engine reliability.
@@jworthe I don’t see your point, if people ONLY wanted reliability then everyone would just have a Land Cruiser. Why do people bother offroading Land Rovers, Jeeps, Hummers, Chevy’s, Fords, or anything else? @@theninethrees8044 Ineos has been touting reliability and ease to maintain from the beginning. If this is part of their core priorities, clearly they blew it. @@theninethrees8044 a underdog that base model costs 75k and then goes to 120k. Ineos is for the fat cats that want to look the part. At that price I would buy G-wagon
I prefer Jeep over Land Rover. Most reliable SUV brand on the planet; even more so than Toyota (despite myths to the contrary) & the design of these newer gen Wranglers & GCs is excellent.
That Jeep is so nice and at a good price. The cockpit is a better place to be and the traction control is good enough to choose it over the Land Rover.
I like the defender better but living in Salida Co where the nearest dealer is two hours away is a challenge. The Jeep is too nice. I do like that I can get it serviced five minutes from home and I like the v8. Considering my brand new Power Wagon’s transmission went out at 30,000 miles and my wife’s grand Cherokee’s transmission had a very odd surging sensation that the dealer could not fix at 28,000 miles…. I would buy the defender.
Land Rover's are notorious for problems. Not saying RAM or Jeep don't have their issues, but you have the same vehicles as my wife and I. I have 50k on my PW and my wife has 70k on her GC. Both with no major issues.
I totally agree and understand. I think it’s just one of those thing…..burned twice, try something else nice. Hope you have an amazing day. If not….make the next day.
The Land Rover is a great piece of Machinery and can tackle some very impressive obstacles. The Jeep needs more clearance from the ai suspension and bigger tires.
I would skip both and buy a Land Cruiser. That said, Jeep has really upped their game. I have owned a Range Rover, and would never do it again. If you own a Land Rover product you need a dealer close by.
I think the Discovery will still have better overall traction than the Jeep but I’d def be interested in the comparison. I don’t have much experience other than road driving a Disco 5 but I still own a 3 and it’s stellar off-road.
I like the way the Defender looks both inside and out a lot more than the GC. I like the boxier look. I also appreciate that they didn't put those little air dams in the way of the approach angle.
I love my loverland jeep, the ride, comfort, the look, we got about everything that could be loaded on/in. I won't be offloading in it tho, that's what my wrangler will be doing. My newfys are very happy with it as well.
Love the Defender That utilitarian, but modern looking interior is fantastic Defender has a lot more capability off road with the rear locking E differential. Defender with Supercharged V8 getting released in UK now It will be in USA soon Defender 130 model with a lot more cargo space and full adult sized Row 3 seats will be in USA approx late 2022. The Defender with the P400 motor can easily fit 18” wheels, with small mods. IMO the LR Discovery is a more appropriate comparison v the Jeep Cherokee L, and Discovery has a lot more room in Row 3 v the Defender 110 with Row 3 seats.
If you consider changing the discs and calipers a small mod? Because that's the only reason they can't fit smaller wheels than 19s... Downsizing your braking system is definitely not the brightest idea...
i think you filmed this on the same day we were nearby doing a rollover recovery lol! those fat rain drops kept coming and going drenching us on the hillside.
I really enjoyed the presentation and camera work. I'm researching for a 3 row SUV. Hyundai and Kia offer a lot, but there transmissions have terrible hesitancy (I've leased 2 Sante Fe's, 1 2019 Sorrento and 1 2020 Sportage. Purchased 2020 Wrangler Unlimited Sport which reminded me how a real transmission should work. Very interested in new GCL, but worried about all first year models (same applies to new Bronco). However your video may compel me to lease when other lease is up.
Was so impressed by the GCL that I bought an Overland trim, although I went with the six cylinder. It’s got plenty of power for around town. It will not ever see any real off roading though. I have my JK for that.
I have a JGC 2022 WK2 Altitude - 2 row old model. It has same engine and transmission. 23 gal gas tank. It has an almost 600 mile highway driving range at 26 mpg. Ride is excellent as well as drivability. Jeep sells way more GC than Wranglers. If you don't go off-road, GC is the best choice. I love mine - a marvel in rain or snow.
Both vehicles did well on the off roading courses. Between the Newly released fifth generation Jeep Grand Cherokee L and the Land Rover Defender, my choice would be the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. It's a longer third row seating SUV and it was still able to do well on the off road courses. Both of these mid-size third row seating SUVs would absolutely destroy the other mid-size third row seating SUVs out there.
I have both the full size Range Rover LWB and the Grand Cherokee L Outlander. The Outlander has as many bells and whistles as the RR LWB for less than half the price. I use the Grand Cherokee L for road trips and hauling. I do not fear long trips in the Jeep (ride in comfort) and not worry about being stranded in Wyoming or Montana 100's of miles from a LR dealer.
I’ve gone Jeep since 12/12/84 and never looked back. I have a Jeep Rubicon 2019 wiih cold air intake and Borla exhausts, dual. My Jeep Grrand Cherokee Overland will be delivered soonly. Kooks headers 3 inch, long tube, cold air exhaust, Borla Atack exhaust, will be added asap. Looking forward to it.
Defender WITH the I6. No 4 cylinder garbage. Most the issues stem from that engine but as for the 6 I'm not hearing of any issues for that engine. I think the electrical assist helps it tremendously. Two companies that have dreadful customer service. Both equally bad in that department and not much difference in their reliability either. Both superb vehicles until something goes wrong.
I've owned quite a few Jeeps that will get up over 200,000 miles. The Hemi is a very reliable powerplant and if you listen to the people that make their 8 speed (For the love of all things holy don't listen to Chrysler) and service the transmission regularly it will totally last that. I've seen Rams with this same drivetrain with 230,000k miles on them. I don't know where the bad rap for reliability that Jeep and Chrysler products have comes from outside of like their cars in the 80's maybe? But modern Jeeps, Dodges, and Ram's are not unreliable especially in comparison to the competition with GM's horrific V6s, and their transmission issues, or Ford's issues where losing oil pressure around 100k miles is normal, oil consumption is apparently normal. If I had to choose a domestic OEM to buy from forever, I'd choose Chrysler. Especially with their interior designs being what they have been recently, they are super nice.
@@umad42 lots of GC from 2013 - 2018 (at least those my friends owned) had a lot of electronic "gremlins". What's it like at night, are the screens too bright? Headlights? Backup lights? How easy will it be to modify, winch, skid plates, suspension? Also, a wrangler falls short in a lot of areas (noise, stability, security) and so some buyers will search for an SUV or pickup alternative. The nicest interior is not of priority. You guys always say "No one will take this expensive 4x4 off road", then you get in a wrangler costing the same amount and mums the word. I think you guys are missing a understanding of the different kinds of buyers that exist, and the TFL audience is not your typical buyer. It will drive like something from the 1980's but with more power and hopefully a bit more refinement. They have just launched a video showing the interior which suits utility companies and farmers very well. Their claim about reducing electronics is laughable though with their only example being the lack of electric seats and keyless entry. Its not as if all that switchgear on the roof and down the centre console was connected to their components by levers and Bowden cables. They are all obviously connected by electronics and cables, hopefully using a modern Bus system rather than miles and miles of individual wires prone to chaffing and being eaten by rodents.
It’ll be miles better than these for proper off-roading from all the initial reveal info! But it’s a solid axle vehicle so not really a comparison to these, probably best compared to a wrangler really

Exactly. The highest setting is for rock crawling and the suspension is very stiff on that setting.
Yeah, it always ticks me off that they run the max height and then complain of it being too stiff.

Comfort mode is suspension setting.. Not off road setting

Grand Cherokee is more LR Discovery competition than LR Defender...
Seems fair to compare. They're both unibody off road image lifestyle crossovers. Underneath they're very similar. Discovery might fit too, it's very similar to the defender underneath.
More Range Rover than Land Rover.

What about the toyota land cruiser V8 its very very reliable
@@dollarzUS it’s too thirsty. Gets like 12/13mpg vs 17-20mpg in the Hemi

Besides the title of your video being a bit far fetched it was a good fun video.

Thorough review gentle. Great work.
That Land Rover motor screams future issues and cost
I disagree, straight 6 engines are easier to work on than V8, and an electric turbo charger may be expensive to replace bur easier to identify issues sooner.
$67k to $20k as soon as the warranty ends in 3yrs. Let the depreciation begin!

That new GC looks fantastic
Why did Jeep force you into an Overland to get the off road package? I feel like it could have been made available in a lower trim too for those who want a little less and to help with cost.
Overland is the base V8 trim too. Go figure
@@moparproud3978 Good point! The V8 sure is a pricey option but it would be great to see a V8 and Off Road package in a base or near base trim too. Since this competes somewhat with the Tahoe Z71, I think it is a little on the high side in terms of price for features compared to the Tahoe off roaring abilities aside.
@@JustinKelly I’m going to hold out hope that happens with the two row version. Which is the better daily and off road one anyways with the shorter wheelbase. Could be something they offer later, which I suppose I get from a business perspective; it’s a $22k jump from a Laredo V6 to an Overland V8. Maybe the thinking is to get things paid off quicker? I dunno. Fingers crossed
The overland is their most off road version of the GC L

I am a Defender man, but, wait a minute, that Cherokee is a beauty! I think I would prefer it, but it looks so BIG! I would probably wait a year or two and get a second hand Defender.
Good thing 😊
Great work

Grand Cherokee short WB 4xE trailhawk vs the Defender off road .
I bought my first Jeep a GCL Overland and I'm impressed so far. I'm in FL only off-road it will see is the beach.
The defender engine sounds very nice.... But not sounding so reliable. That jeep interior is off the hook.
After test driving a Overland today I am thoroughly impressed at the interior quality and in person the vehicle is pretty substantial and is prettier in person... Almost bit the bullet on it I was that impressed but I have to pay off my wife surgery first then we will get her a new toy.
Defender if you care about what everyone else thinks about you and Jeep if you care about reliability
You'll be amazed by the Defender. Amazed by the amount of tires you'll need to get through a trail! 😉
Nice comparison! How would a Discovery stack up against a Cherokee L? Family hauler vs Family hauler.
I cannot wait for TFL to review the Ineos Grenadier AKA the Real New Defender.
We can’t be too quick to judge the capabilities, instead of bashing a company that is ACTUALLY listening to their consumers unlike the company that totally abandoned a loyal following for a new customer base we need to cheer the underdog.
@@theninethrees8044 Ineos has been touting reliability and ease to maintain from the beginning. If this is part of their core priorities, clearly they blew it. And the days of live axled Land Cruisers are long, long gone.
Lastly, reliability is a spectrum. But engines that last 75,000 miles before they start to develop significant issues is unacceptable. On a side note, my local British Car shop has a collection of low mileage LR3s waiting for donor BMW engines.

I prefer Jeep over Land Rover. Most reliable SUV brand on the planet; even more so than Toyota (despite myths to the contrary) & the design of these newer gen Wranglers & GCs is excellent.
Customer reviews and reliability scores beg to differ
Toyota is better
Very Unbiased Review! Loved it
That Jeep is so nice and at a good price. The cockpit is a better place to be and the traction control is good enough to choose it over the Land Rover.
4:21 "This thing is so capable..." After watching your more recent three-way shootout with the Defender, Bronco, and Wrangler...that didn't age well.
No kidding. That video makes the LR look like an impotent POS.
The thing about the Jeep is that, if you want a more hardcore offroader most people will go for the Wrangler
I would skip both and buy a Land Cruiser. That said, Jeep has really upped their game. I have owned a Range Rover, and would never do it again. If you own a Land Rover product you need a dealer close by.
I would love to see grand Cherokee l vs discovery..
Defender vs wrangler vs bronco..
Agree the defender just looks amazing.

That's crazy you guys made this comparison, I'm actually looking at buying either one of those right now
Great review. I especially liked the how many Andres cargo test.😂
These two vehicles are strongly in the more money than sense category.
3 on the Jeep, 2 and a pinch on the Defender 😂
That was a funny part. 🤣
Love the Defender
That utilitarian, but modern looking interior is fantastic
Defender has a lot more capability off road with the rear locking E differential.
Defender with Supercharged V8 getting released in UK now
It will be in USA soon
Defender 130 model with a lot more cargo space and full adult sized Row 3 seats will be in USA approx late 2022.
The Defender with the P400 motor can easily fit 18” wheels, with small mods.
IMO the LR Discovery is a more appropriate comparison v the
Jeep Cherokee L, and Discovery has a lot more room in Row 3 v the Defender 110 with Row 3 seats.
If you consider changing the discs and calipers a small mod? Because that's the only reason they can't fit smaller wheels than 19s... Downsizing your braking system is definitely not the brightest idea...
Grand Cherokee any and every day!!!! The Hemi will still be running in 10 years if not right out the box!!!

It will. There are many early 2000's dodge trucks with that engine that are still running.

How are you liking the Overland a year later? Reliable?
The interior in the defender looks cheaper than the Pacifica
You have zero idea what you are talking about.
I've got to go with the Jeep. The cost difference for what you get plus if anything goes wrong is going to be cheaper to fix.
From England i have a 1999 Defender 90 that has Traction Control.
The Discovery Series 2 which came out in 99 had it as well I’m pretty sure. That’s the NA market
I think the first Land Rover to have traction control was the Freelander, introduced 1998.
In a contest of staunch unreliability, the new Grand Cherokee starts strong by leaking oil OUT OF THE BADGE. 0:18
Your move, Defender.
Defender WITH the I6. No 4 cylinder garbage. Most the issues stem from that engine but as for the 6 I'm not hearing of any issues for that engine. I think the electrical assist helps it tremendously. After seeing so many defenders and riding in some. Definitely a favorite of mine. It's sad I expect LR to be that expensive but jeep? Yeah I'm not paying that much for a jeep

Dash lighting up like a christmas tree, alarms stating a door is open when all are closed, burning down batteries, power window switches that would stop working, radio that would have the screen of death (had that too on a 2017 RAM 1500 with the top radio unit with 8 in, screen, sat nav and the Alpine radio). And on the same RAM, the driver side window would pull out of its support and fall down, mostly during winter. it happened to me 4 times, usually Friday evening so I'd be stuck with a transparent plastic bag for the week-end until I go tired and learned how to reinstall things...
You guys should really consider changing the defender screen theme to dark mode. Looks so much more slick than the white background default mode.
If I was spending my money and keeping in mind I live in the western USA not England it is an easy choice. Jeep. Plus a simple reliable, smooth, good sounding, V8 with no complication on it beats what the other one has by a mile. For less money. That said, the best combo is a Wrangler for off road and a Grand Cherokee for on road plus a little off road.
TFL - I love you guys but I have a gripe about your "real world reviews". Whats it like to open the defenders back door on a side slope? How about A-Pillar & C-pillar blind spots? What's it like at night, are the screens too bright? Headlights? Backup lights? How easy will it be to modify, winch, skid plates, suspension?
Also, a wrangler falls short in a lot of areas (noise, stability, security) and so some buyers will search for an SUV or pickup alternative. The nicest interior is not of priority. You guys always say "No one will take this expensive 4x4 off road", then you get in a wrangler costing the same amount and mums the word. I think you guys are missing a understanding of the different kinds of buyers that exist, and the TFL audience is not your typical buyer. (I needed a 4x4 with low range that was as good at 80mph for 10 hours on varying road surfaces, quiet and could keep my cargo dry and dust free. JGC Trailhawk v6 ticked all my boxes. There were desert pin strips down the sides in the first week.)
Thanks. love you guys

Wondering how the Ineos Grenadier will perform 😍
Both are my fav cars but i prefer jeep because its more luxury and i like the design and the feature's. good review btw
