Usually it is moulded in heated Dai(s) in hydraulic press. The finished product is used as toys in toy industry, as O-rings, pipes, etc. in automobile industry, etc.

Not only is the sound off putting but doing this also looks extremely dangerous as I kept thinking what'd happen if they got their hand stuck there?

Yeah same. As someone whose been caught in a lathe and lost a fingernail to a sheet metal roller this kind of stuff is almost unwatchable
Don't worry about that these machines/mixing mills have emergency stop switches at all 4 pillars holding rolling cylinders and there's even bars on top of those rolling cylinders so that if someone's arm get stuck in the material near cylinders he can pull that bar to jam the gears hence stopping the motor. But sadly I have seen many companies remove this feature because sometimes it gets in the way of their process.
I myself work on one these machines and that thing literally don't have ANY emergency feature and if something happened then all I can do is scream!!!
Once one of my contact lost his one arm on one of these machines. Reason- he didn't drink that day. Yes it's not a typing mistake. He normally used to work on it while being drunk (not too much), I used to say Bro something can go wrong if you kept doing this. He- Nah, if I tried to work on it without being drunk then something can go wrong. And one day he didn't drink, went on the mill and lost his whole palm. Nasty

Since the rollers are conductive and the silicone isn't you could easily install a circuit that cuts the power if there is electrical contact between the 2 rollers since hands are conductive.

they don't need to be, compressing silicone like that would generate a LOT of heat.
