Gaha Sattasai (Prakrit) / Gatha Saptashati (Sanskrit) was written by King Hala. Hence it was known as Hala's Gatha Saptashati. There is an interesting story about him (& his queen). His queen was a princess from Sri Lanka & can speak Samskrt fluently. Once while they were playing "jala kreeda" in the palace pond (swimming pool), he began splashing water on her. She held her palms against the splash & said "Rajan ! Ma`odakam taadayat", which means "King ! don't splash water that beats me". King Hala who doesn't know Samskrtam, thought she is asking for Modakam (Modak, that is offered to Ganesha) as she was pregnant. He got modak s made, took to her & asked her to eat. She laughed at the King Hala's ignorance of Samskrt & explained it (ma udakam = not with water). Hala was embarrassed and began learning Samskrt. Gatha Saptashati's translations in Telugu are available.

Prakrit is only for Marathi 😂😂😂 😅 there are many areas where it is spoken don't forget . It's ancient India there was no Marathi at that time and prakrit was spoken equally in Andhra Pradesh too later Telugu evolved from Dravidian and prakrit and sanskrit . Other wise u don't find every dam word of Sanskrit and prakrit in Telugu. Marathi evolved post 12 century.

Thanks for the information. I am deeply grateful.
All the same, don't comment on things you don't know (like Telugu language), based on your visceral feelings. It is a typical Indian trait that needs to be checked & overcome, before the country gets split into various language based countries. Responsibility for it, rests with us & us only.
Have respect for all native Indian languages . I have a great regard & respect for Marathi (my third sister is married in the Maratha household - Bhongade) though I don't know enough.

    • @thesupremesupreme

@@MrPoornakumar I don't have any opposition to any language infact I speak both marati and Telugu . Telugu being my mother tongue. And I speak tamizh as well. I'm only against to the fact that modern states are different from old ones and borders keeps on changing. And we can't say only Marathi originated from prakrit so prakrit speakers are ancient Marathi this is unacceptable.as prakrit was spoken from north to south in ancient India. And prakrit and sanskrit has greatly impacted other regional languages of India. I'm against to the idea of claiming kings on regional basis and state wide basis as nationalism and state were new concepts and in previous times empire consists of different people in one empire.

Gaha Sattasai is actually a composition of poems in Maharashtri(one of the many Prakrits spoken in ancient India). Considering that Marathi was declared classical due to its continuity with Maharashtri, the first collection of ancient poems of Marathi is actually the Gaha Sattasai.

What a fascinating style of narration you have Sir.
I have one question, Sir. Gaha Sattasai was written by 17th Satvahana King Hala almost around 1st Century AD whereas Vatsyayana belonged to 3rd-4th Century CE hence Kamasutra was written later than Gaha Sattasai. How come Gaha Sattasai make a criticism of Kamasutra when it was written earlier also would it be fair to make a comparison of both when these two were written in a completely different time and space. I'll patiently wait for your response Sir. Thank you.

    • @trystwithhistory8480
      @trystwithhistory8480  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you for watching the video, thinking it through and asking a very interesting question.
Gaha Sattasai has been compiled over time and it spread from one region to another, over time, moment/culture specific situations were addressed in form of short poems and were added to the compilation. Thatswhy a time frame of its compilation has been allotted to it as mentioned in the video. This gives rise to a commentary on relevance of Kamasutra which finds its place in the early poems of Gaha Sattasai. The fluidity of its movement through time and consequent evolution allows space for speculation. In its own way, Kama Sutra, is supposed to have undergone consistent effort over centuries before reaching its datable form.
Also, your observation is brilliant, because, Charles Wilkins while translating Bhagvat Gita with the help of Kashinath Bhattacharya, had observed that it was composed before Atharva Veda, since it mentions all other Vedas except Atharva Veda.
      Thank you again.

We would love to do a sociological study of the era. It may be a bit longish and boring for many. 🙂

The castes division of people finds a mention in the Bhagavad-Gita. And the Gita was written by Ved Vyas in about 7000 BCE. You'll find mention in Adhyay 4 Sloka 13.

Sir, this work relates to Deccan where sanskritisation happened much later in time. Reference is made to how wives of Satvahan Kings brought the influence of Sanskrit and north on the language and culture of Deccan.

Srikrishna talks of varnashram dharm ie based on profession chosen on merit and inclination.. not caste... Ved Vyas himself was born of a fisherwoman and highly revered in his own lifetime.

Sir, who talks about caste even in current day Indian love songs.? To make special mention of caste being absent and justifying that it's from Deccan and no Sanskrit influence is imagination going drunk

I have been listening to your videos with interest. Great work! Please continue your great work.
However, I want to register a criticism on this one. You may want to check your analysis and facts:
1:00 to 1:40 ब्राह्मण, शुद्र, क्षत्रिय का जिक्र नहीं है, so you conclude this was composed before जातीसंस्था came (but examples used are वर्ण). This can’t be. Because Yajurveda and Rigveda mention वर्णसंस्था, etc. just because this one book doesn’t mention them doesn’t mean they were non existent when this poetry composition was written. Further the epigraphy in नाणेघाट proves that even kings in that area were performing Vedic rituals. So you can’t say the Vedic religion had not reached Deccan (and was limited to “भारत” which you talk about as a potentially limited area in early first millennium)
2:55 to 3:30 claims प्राकृत doesn’t have structure or grammar. - not true. प्राकृत sentences are more structured than Sanskrit (like many later languages) and has विभक्ती, verb conjugations etc very similar to Sanskrit and modern Indian languages.
