  • In today's episode from Duck End, Philip shares with you some evocative works of art from his childhood. A rugged, angular landscape by Kyffin Williams (1918-2006) begins the sixteenth episode in the series. Join Philip tomorrow at 4pm on Instagram for another Thursday revelations and questions session and the launch of a new and exciting part of Philip Mould online. We would like to thank our musical source for this episode.

One of my favourite episodes to date! Born and raised in New South Wales (a descendant of fore-fathers who originally immigrated from Wales in the late 19th), I’ve often wondered what it was about New South Wales that reminded James Cook of Wales - beyond a similarity on coast line. I now see it might be the tough robust nature of the landscape , unyielding, and requiring hard toil to scrap a living from it. I also enjoyed the phrase “ like many artists, he found a way to relating to the world that suited him best.” Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Kyffin was a painter for the people and extremely popular in his life time. Your painting is typical of his work and a true delight. I am just surprised that he is not as well known as Lowry in which his life shares many similarities. So pleased you have shown a piece of this fabulous artist.

Each time I watch one of these videos, I come away not just better informed, but much calmer and happier. The wide open outdoor spaces (with your gorgeous dog) remind me of Life outside these four walls, while each visited room filled with art, books, wonderful carpets and storied furnishings feels like a warm embrace. Aside from being an incredibly informative series, I think you're also performing a necessary public service. Thank you!

Love these videos. Have a special soft spot for the father and son thing. My son helped me move soil for a new garden I was filling for his mother the other day, and he even pumped up the tyres on the wheel barrow for me. He is probably a little too young (even at 25!) to know how I cherish things like that. Of course, I can’t mention my feelings to him. So I thought I’d record it here.

On second viewing I am even more enamoured of this picture. My husband and I cycled in Wales in the very late eighties/early nineties, and I loved its rugged beauty and pure water.
Sunday lunch at a pub: Welsh lamb’s liver cooked to perfection by the owner’s wife - an iconic farmer’s wife, painterly, pink cheeked and with capable hands - I can see her now. Oh glorious days! Thank you for the memory.

This tutorial was mind blowing. Several months ago a fine auction house in Boca Raton, Florida had for sale on eBay a piece by “mystery artist” I knew it was important but I couldn’t remember who it was. I saved it to my photos so now I can look at the one that got away for a stupid price.

OMG. OMG. He's a master. I'd never heard of him before. Thank you so much for showing us this. He's the Seamus Heaney of landscape. I looked up more of his work. He's phenomenal. The limited pallet, the composition, the depth of plane, rule of thirds, the atmospheric sky, buttered texture...and his work is consistent. You can feel the shape of the landscape and the circumference of the earth. And with a pallet knife? The frame is perfect for the piece. You have a jewel, there. The web refers to him as "Sir Kyffin Williams." He was knighted? Love the door. This is one of my favorite Seamus Heaney poems:
Requiem for the Croppies by Seamus Heaney
The pockets of our greatcoats full of barley...
No kitchens on the run, no striking camp...
We moved quick and sudden in our own country.
The priest lay behind ditches with the tramp.
A people hardly marching... on the hike...
We found new tactics happening each day:
We'd cut through reins and rider with the pike
    And stampede cattle into infantry,
Then retreat through hedges where cavalry must be thrown.
Until... on Vinegar Hill... the final conclave.
Terraced thousands died, shaking scythes at cannon.
The hillside blushed, soaked in our broken wave.
They buried us without shroud or coffin
And in August... the barley grew up out of our grave.

A delightful episode that got me thinking on how the local slate would cleave into clean flat lines and sufaces with so many cottages, roofs and walls are made from that slate. Using a palette knife in such a landscape that is devoid of gentler curves makes sense and is in harmony with the slate and rock that defines the spirit of the area.
This episode prompted me to take some R S Thomas poems off my bookshelf and travel back there in my mind's eye, I'm really loving your series Mr Mould (& Son) and hope you feel encouraged to do more of these personal looks at art and the joy it brings you and us. Thank-you.

Although the work isn't my cup of tea, no, life is hard enough without adding moody olive landscapes of hard rocky Wales, but I totally understand your appreciation of what he was doing. What was interesting was the palette knife application, yes, it is cleaner than brushes, its hard to get paint really out of a brush. Mixing own paint with a knife is perfect...I used the side of a cut piece of mount board for painting my early work to define the lines and structure, dragging the paint across. I didn't use brushes at all, just card and rags..., much more liberating, then scrubbing it half off, beautiful effects. Only recently have I tried brushes more for oil works. Loved the photo view of Wales, what a painting that would make! Thanks for these lovely little insights into your life and love of art at home.

The painting reminds me of the west of Ireland painters, such as Yeats. Similar landscape. similar style. Thanks for this wonderful series!!

Just found your 'Art in Isolation' series. As an artist in isolation, I'm loving this. Thank you!

I am particularly drawn to this painting , my paternal grandmother emigrated from Wales and some of the photographs she had are evoked in this painting. Sadly they were destroyed in a house fire.

That landscape is, I think, my favorite piece of your art collection. It is so solid and still. I agree that is somewhat moody, it seems that the most beautiful things have a touch of melancholy and touch the heart in a deep and complex way.

I eagerly await your program every day since I happened upon them last week. This painting of Kyffin Williams looks familiar to me. Wasn't another of his works appraised on the UK "Antiques Roadshow" at one time? I trust that you're not tiring of sharing your knowledge, your art works and your lovely home with us all. I for one couldn't be happier to visit with you.

Cannot help but notice how complementary the frames are to the pictures.

I love North Wales. My father was born in Ruthin and we would take wonderful happy holidays there, camping at the foot of Snowdonia, wading in the waterfalls at Betws-y-Cowyd and taking the Ffestiniog railway through the national park. I suppose it’s no wonder the three of us all took up art in later life as it was such an inspiration.

Thank you again for bringing absolute delight. It does not get better than this dogs art countryside and erudition. You made me think about paintings in my home. As an expat Australian living in HK I have many childhood memories of lying in the garden looking at the sky through eucalyptus trees. I have two paintings by Juan Ford because I love the light in the sky that he paints. I can almost hear the lawnmower in the next garden and smell the grass. Thank you for connecting me even more with the art I already love.
