    You know I absolutely love these videos. Art education and interesting histories of the painters and the subjects. Mostly I admire the return of the meadowlands you have accomplished. Last evening I saw a movie/documentary called “KISS THE GROUND “. The premise of this documentary was that if we save the soil, as you are doing, we save the earth and climate change ceases to be a problem. I thought of you immediately. In the development of your meadows you and your family are doing just that, saving the soil. Absolutely wonderful! Thank you.

    Thanks so much Philip for inviting us into your home and sharing it, and your erudition, with us all. I was interested to see the picture of an artist's studio at such an early date. I associate this subject more with near contemporary painters such as Raoul Dufy and Carlos Nadal so this was a pleasant surprise. By the way, I could quite easily listen to your anecdotal explanations, delivered in your informal, conversational tone, all day!! Merci infiniment!!!

    The first painting, the man in the lower right has a strong resemblance to Samuel Pepys. When you crossed the room to the painting by Lily, who Pepys knew and talked about many times in his diary was very interesting. Pepys "gossiped" about this woman and Nell Quinn and of course Charles the Second, who he also knew and was known by Charles helped put that diary and its history into a strong perspective for me. That was the first Lily I have seen.

    Dear Philip, have you ever considered the possibility of one of the two portraits on the bottom right of the first painting being a self-portrait of the artist? I'd say, most probably, the one on the left that looks finished. That portrait speaks to me as being a "signature". As you certainly know, it was common at that time, and also later, for a client to commission a painting with a classic theme and have himself included in it as a character in the middle of the crowd, usually in a secondary role. I only recently discovered this series and it has been giving me a lot of pleasure, and knowledge. By the way, I would say that your choice about your lovely dog's breed has a meaning and a story, but I'd leave that for another time (or maybe that has already been addressed in another video). Cheers

    Fascinating to learn how it all started with the genealogical context and (presumably) somewhat speculative nature of your early purchases as a dealer. I've always wondered whether duplicates of a portrait ,by the original artist, would be painted with the same detail as the original or would be of a lesser quality.

  • @carrierockwell2447
    @carrierockwell2447 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think there may have been students in the artist’s studio as well? Could the artist have wanted a painting of the studio for posterity?
    The intimacy of an artist studio or several artists studio is a rare glimpse, I think, because it is almost like a boudoir.
    As a painter of portraits myself and working with other painters in a single studio, it always had a messy order to it.
    Thank you so much for inviting us in to your space to teach about paintings that we would not have the opportunity to see otherwise.
