- I started using the Surface Book 3 for business and I’m back in love with Surface again. The Surface Book 2 was my main laptop for over a year before I switched over to mainly using the 16-inch MacBook Pro.
This Surface Book 3 15-inch has got some upgrades. It has 512GB storage, 32GB of RAM, and NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 Max Q graphics which is available on the Surface for business website. To sum it up. It’s a really expensive device, but you’re getting something that’s unique.

Sorry, but I am confused. Why would anyone go from a Surface Book to a laptop that doesn't have:
1. a touch screen
2. pen support
3. 2-in-1 design
4. MicroSD slot
5. face recognition
6. detachable tablet
7. gaming capabilities
But does have a long history of:
1. green screen issues
2. keyboard issues
3. malware issues
4. overheating
5. thermal throttling
Thank you for your video. I'm thinking of getting the book 3. Thank you for mentioning its able to do video editing and gaming. I am video editing myself and I need a laptop that can be powerful enough. And even gaming if I need to.

Hey Mark. I have the Surface Book 3 15", 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD with 1660 Ti GPU Max Q design. I love it! And I get great utility from its form factor including detaching it to use as a tablet/clipboard, writing on it, laying back in bed/couch drawing, surfing the web, reading comics, studying the bible etc.
Its also a powerful laptop for all that I do. writing, light gaming, Zoom/Skype meetings, video editing etc.
And drawing in studio or draft mode with the display turned around to utilize thr GPU is great too!
Also proping it up, display reveresed in display mode watching video is great too.
Any way I was hoping you could do a Book 3 Surface Laptop Studio deep comparison,pros and cons. What say ye? 🙂
surface book is the best design in my opinion, they could fix the woble and gap, but its so much better than the new surface studio transformer. i do illustrations with the display detached, comfortable and light. you cannot detach the new studio display. i see it as a portable surface pro with a dedicated gpu portable dock, true all in one.
i highly recommend getting the surface dock 2 and you can take advantage of the powerful specs to project onto a desktop style setup with peripherals etc
But when your surface get hot, it detach by itself . Then you lose all signals
and can also use it with an actual working display that has no transient image retention issues.

I got the SurfaceBook 3 13.5 and I love it!! And I agree with your point, the headphone jack needs to move lol. I also have the same Pixel 5 for simplicity and no bloatware, one reason I'll never go to Apple again. Apple didn't have bloatware but it does restrict you way too much for it's pricepoint.
I'm still rocking the original Surface Book. I'm really disappointed that there still isn't a magnetic cover for the screen when you use it as table mode. I think I'll wait for the Surface Book 4 to be announced to see what changes they have before I decide to buy another one.
You are so on the mark! I have SFB II, but rarely using the screen by itself, as I would not want to have it lying around somewhere. MS is just lacking someone, who really looks at appliances from a user-perspective.
I wish they would bring back the Surface Book

I bought, and ended up returning two of these devices. Both would not recognize touch or pen input on about 1/4 inch top side of the screen. Super annoying trying to minimize or resize an app and unable to do so. So sad, because I was absolutely looking forward to keeping this laptop.

I really appreciate this review! It was one of the last reviews I watched before making the decision to get the book3! I am doing Telehealth work as a therapist and need a reliable computer for teletherapy. The headphone part is a bit disappointing- do you think a wireless Bluetooth headphones would work well with this?
Wireless headphones work. I've used the pixel buds and airpods pro during video calls and watching movies/videos. I still prefer to use my wired headphones when editing videos

I had an SB2 and the battery failed so I got a $5300 mac book pro. The MBPro battery lasted 4.5hrs of the advertized 11 so I took that back and got an SB3 as well as an extra $1143 back in my pocket. There is no better all-around laptop sadly than the SB3. If it had a bigger battery and beefier video card and well as a 4TB+ drive the SB3 would be the undisputed king of laptops.

You had much better luck than I did. I bought the first one in September of last year. I am waiting for the 6th replacement device to arrive soon. These are terribly built. Pen and touch died on unit 1, bluetooth radio on unit 2, then they sent replacement with a stuck key on the keyboard, the next had a blown speaker (apparently not uncommon) and the last one came with a bad hinge. Not sure what will be wrong with the next one that is coming soon - but it's a good bet it won't last very long. Huge waste of money - I gave up and bought a Razer Blade so I had something reliable. Far better investment.
Wow! What a horrible experience. 😒My experience with the Book 3 I got in January if pretty much the opposite. None of the issues you've had.
Sadly you're replacement devices were likely refurbished with preexisting issues that had been poorly addressed (if at all) when recycled to you.😒 Definitely not a cool experience fir what is essentially a great and unique device with a great balance between power and design.

I also want to buy a Surface Book 3, but I'm not so sure about the display quality. There are some comments on Amazon, Microsoft community, Reddit etc. from people saying that after some weeks their Surface Book developed hairline cracks without any external force (similar to the surface laptop 3). Furthermore, they had problems to get any support from Microsoft. Most often, it was said to them that it was their own fault, and they should spend 600$/€ + for the repair. At this point, I don't know really know if I should risk buying one. What do you think? Or maybe someone else who had similar issues could give their take. I would be really interested.
Whats the difference in video editing between Surface Laptop vs Surface Book 15's. Is one better than the other in terms of graphics performance?

I was so close to buying the SB 3, but instead I went and got the surface laptop studio and I am very happy with it, despite it having to be replaced by Microsoft x3 times..... due to hardware issues like the battery not working when the power adapter was removed..... its a brand replacement I have now and I love it.. :D I switched from apple to windows for a while so see how things go for now, could be back to mac at some stage...
They need to get rid of the detachable tablet screen and simply make a very powerful Surface Book laptop.

Heaphone Jack should be placed in the keyboard base and removed all together from the tablet portion. Blues connection for keyboard section should be an option.

Please can you clear up this passage 5:30 - 5:50. I'm af SolidWorks beginner and might buy a used Surface Book 3 15" 16 RAM, 256 HD. If the graphic card is not sufficient (in this original configuration), would it be possible to exchange it with a stronger graphic card?

I really like this laptop, but a 1660ti gpu is just not gonna cut it at over $2000 USD.
Question tho: can you the stronger gpu base for a "weaker" top? Like get the i5 top and a 1660ti base?

Sorry, I don't have experience in 3d modeling so I can't say from experience, but it should be able to speed through software like Autodesk AutoCAD, Dassault SOLIDWORKS, Adobe Creative Cloud, and code in Microsoft Visual Studio.

I have and love this device, but one if the disappointing things is that the volume is kind of low. It's ok, but definitely doesn't boom like a MacBook.
Id still choose this over a Mac though. Can't beat the context conforming design, touch and inking, etc. 🙂
Do you think its still a good option to buy in 2021 with the 1065G7? Also, do you think the 13 inch with 1650 is good compared to 15 inch with 1660Ti?
price will be a little better in 2021. I still love this laptop. Great balance of power and fan noise. Sorry I don't have experience with the 13-inch
3:15 such bad headphone jack placement... I would have preferred it in the base or something.. I dont need the cable dangling all over the place

Nice review! A few queries - Is it too big/unwieldy to be used on lap? Does the screen wobble while typing/using on lap? How warm does the base get?
not too big to be used on lap. Doesn't wobble while typing. It has a good hinge 👍 What's also great is that if you're watching movies in tight spaces like in a bus/car/plane, you can detach the display and re-attach the other way

Hey man, your a great reviewer. I’m a student, and I want a laptop for school. Don’t have many requirement, I just want it to be windows, look good, portable, 13 - 15 inches, and touchscreen. Memory should be at least 256 gb. Good amount of ram. Any suggestions?

Yeah, the actual computer part is in the display and the processor is around the center therefore making it heat up under heavy load.

Did you have any issues with the screen going black for no reason? Or with it overheating at all?
haven't experienced those but i remember a couple times I wasn't able to increase or decrease display brightness. A restart fixed it.
I had that issue several times with mine and ended up returning the product aftr exchanging it 3 times. The wrost issue i had lastly was windows resetting unexpectedly and deleted everything from my computer
I updated my graphics driver to Feb 2021 version directly from Intel website for the SurfaceBook. But every now and then, I'll check my driver to make sure it didn't revert back. I think Microsoft stopped pushing that shit update from 2020 onto us.
I've had the screen going black issue at times. I'm not sure if updates fixed it because it hasn't happened in months.👍
