  • Which Full Range Driver is the best for your speaker build? I have put together a short review of both the Markaudio CHR-70 and AIYIMA 4" Full range drivers. The box sizes may not be ideal but, they are the same so, should give a great representation of the comparable differences. I have, using Dayton Audio DATSv3 put the Small Thiele (T/S) parameters in the video too.

I found the Aiyima to be brighter and clearer in the upper midrange, say in the 1-4khz range. The Mark Audio sounded more balanced but a bit flat. Purists often chase this flat sound, but truthfully not many people really enjoy listening to a flat speaker. In all of the demos except the beethoven piano, I liked the Aiyima sound better (I also prefer a slightly bright speaker). The piano tracks sounded the same to me. Not surprising since Pianos don't really have a lot of high frequency harmonics or details compared to the horns and strings in the other tracks.

So i just built a pair of Voigt pipes of old pallet-wood and mdf and slapped a 10euro pair of 4" full range drivers on them and just hooked them up and watched your vid with the sound through them (thats a lot of thems lol) The Aiyimas sounded much better in your video, to my ears at least. Subjectively comparing them in that circumstance the two presentations were totally different. The Chr's being very laid back with the Aiyima's being lively. I found the sparkle of the Aiyima's particularly pleasing and can imagine in your listening room they readily produce holographic imaging whereas the Chr's imaging would be more solid. Bass on both was good, but I felt the Aiyima's were a tad more defined and articulate. again purely down to the design traits of the drivers. I was very impressed with the Aiyima's and your videos have enticed me to buy a pair on that strength, for my upcoming Frugel Horn Mk III build.

    • @DIY-AUDIO

They are both good, I prefer the aiyima for certain music's and the bass is very good for a 4" driver. I have also got that Markaudio Pluvia 7hd and they are superb and smooth.

@@DIY-AUDIO Funny enough the Pluvia 7HD or PHD are on my list for trying at some stage. I also have a pair of Fostex FE105s (too coloured for me by current standards), and also a pair of CHN110 which are superb but too big for the FH3.
Incidentally I opted for the sister by Audio Labs as the two had an identical specification and were cheaper.

3" and 4" fr drivers are excellent to use as the "tweeter" in a 2-way build.
Take much of the stress off the bass driver with a very low XO point of 300hz or lower.
Opens up the sound quite a bit.

you will ruin the flat response if you crossover at 3k, let a full range speaker play full range.... if you want bass get a subwoofer... don't mess around with crossovers on a full range speaker, it's not a subwoofer...

When I built my house 28 years ago I installed highly regarded Pioneer 8" dual cone speakers in the ceiling of the kitchen and family room (HT surrounds). They sounded a little dull (like the Mark) so I added a Pioneer 5/8" tweeter crossed over at 6KHz, surface mounted, that made all the difference.

No they don't but some people do put on a notch filter to take into account the front baffle size. Plenty on line about it.

For me AIYIMA sounded better, it sounded way better and more precise on higher frequencies, without loosing lower frequencies, CHR 70 sounded more like a midrange and muddy on higher frequencies. So as full range speaker AIYIMA is a winner for me.
