I am so glad you addressed the hair training myth in this video. I tried to hair train for years with zero success. I can, however, extend by a day or two using a few strategies (without excessive oil / dandruff, a sign that you should wash your hair to keep it healthy). My hair has been SO MUCH healthier now that I've stopped trying to extend wash days (i have fine hair).

I honestly think it's a little of both, and that it depends on your natural scalp type and probably your shampoo.
When you strip your face with harsh cleansers with high pH, some people's skin reacts by becoming dry and scaly, but some people's reacts by producing more oil and sebum to protect and replenish the skin. If you have normal skin, but your skin takes the second approach, you may seem like you have oily skin. But once you switch to pH balanced and more gentle face cleansers, your skin might rebalance and behave like normal balanced skin again.
The same is true of your scalp. If your scalp is normal, but you wash every day with really stripping shampoos, your scalp can overproduce oils to replenish and protect itself. But if you switch to less frequent washings, it takes time for your scalp to adjust and for a period of time, it will continue to produce at the same level before balancing out. I used to have an oily scalp, but once I started reducing my frequency, my hair first was oilier, then over an adjustment period was less and less oily.
I transition from daily washing the summer after high school. There was an adjustment period, but by the time I was in college in the fall I was down to 2x a week, and my hair on wash days after the adjustment period was cleaner looking than my hair before the shower when I washed it daily. And I didn't change absolutely anything else in my routine in that time.
All sorts of factors are involved in how long you can go between washes and still have fresh looking and feeling hair (i.e.hair length/density/thickness, how oily your skin is in its ideal state, the type of products you use, etc). But there is more to the adjustment period than just "learning to wash better."

@@Amanda.aka.Megan.Shines totally hear you! Hair training produced zero results for me despite using gentle, sulfate-free products, impeccable nutrition, etc. So sad. I wish i hadn't spent two years with greasy hair trying to train something that was never going to change. :(

I think it depends on your type of hair. I never got on the bandwagon of trying to not wash my hair for 5 or 6 days. Excessive dry shampoo build up, is not good for your scalp or hair follicles. If you're someone who has to heat style after every wash, then yes, that would be the time to try to extend your wash from everyday, or every other, to every 3 or 4 days. My hair is long and thick, but my follicles are thinner, so my hair gets weighed down easily so I need to wash it semi often. If you're waiting 6 or 7 days to wash, then using heat to constantly restyle, id just wash your hair. If your hair is super dry, not washing is not the cure for that. Adding moisture to your hair is key. Deep condition every wash, let it sit for 5 minutes. Use a leave in conditioner, then a oil. Heat and bleach will also strip the moisture from your hair . I also, always use a pretreatment before I shampoo. Also...this no sulfate thing is something I dont get. People are going 6 and 7 days without showing then using a sulfate free shampoo and it doesn't remove all the product build up! Sulfates are not your enemy.

@@jennysheets3763 I wish it was more commonplace for people to talk about how long “adjusting” actually takes. If you have been trying for a month with no real improvement, then it’s probably not an adjustment period. I think people are so ready to advise of an adjustment period because some people get greasy the first week or so and they give up. However, for some people extending between washes isn’t right for their hair/scalp, but they stick it out for far longer than they might have otherwise because they think they will adjust eventually.

I think hair training is very legit and backed by science, but can totally see how it may not work for all! I had craaazy oily hair where I'd have to wash it every day or it'd be disgusting. I then discovered and researched hair training and forced myself to stop washing it even though it was awful at first. After a year and a half of pushing through the misery, by the end I was washing my hair only once a week with barely any oil developed by the end. I changed no products or anything else at all.
The same thing happened with my skin. My face would get crazy oily throughout the day in highschool and I finally went to a dermatologist and she asked for my skincare routine and told me the problem was that I was only using completely oil-free products. She made me start adding skincare products with oil and although it kinda sucked at first after a few months my skin was no longer excessively oily and went back to normal. Our human bodies have incredible capabilities to adapt to external stimuli as needed in numerous other instances too. There's a lot of scientific evidence hair training is legit. I'm sure there's plenty of exceptions though, as there is to anything.

Yeah i felt sad hearing everyone hate on hair training in the comment section because I'm certain it totally saved my hair too honestly haha! I get how it may not work for some people, ppl are different, but I also think there's good reason it is legit. like you said, we adapt all the time to stuff. I lived in texas where it's super humid my whole life and moved to the pnw a few years back where its really dry and at first my skin got dry because of it and then i had issues with my face being greasy. My dermatologist said it was likely because of the sudden climate change and it was trying to hydrate again. I got better moisturizer and it fixed it

I still see other influencers perpetuating the hair training myth. Let me tell you, I perspire at night, I just do, especially in winter with the heating on full blast. My scalp gets gross in a hurry. No amount of leaving it a disgusting mess for days and days is going to break that cycle. I hate the idea of ppl being told that if your scalp is naturally super oily, it means you’re doing something wrong. Not true!

My grandparents taught me to use a fine tooth comb to clean my scalp, which is how I use my boar bristle brush. I can get away with post-poning washing my hair for a whole extra week if I start using it when I notice my scalp getting greasy. Really convenient for when I’m too busy or depressed to do a whole wash routine.

FYI- The brush that Abbey always refers to as the "Wet Brush Pro" is actually the "Wet Brush Shine". The Wet Brush Pro is the same as the Wet Brush as far as only having plastic bristles, but the Wet Brush Pro's bristles are stiffer. The Wet Brush Shine is the one that has a mixture of plastic bristles and boar bristles. Just in case you order a Wet Brush Pro and wonder why there are no boar bristles (like I did). There's also Wet Brush Pro Shine, which I think is the stiffer plastic bristles with the boar bristles, but the word "Shine" is the keyword when trying to get the combination of bristle types.

love your videos! Good to mention that hair shedding can also be an issue internally (not mechanical or breakage) but shedding from the root. This is different entirely and can be due to illness, nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune disorders like thyroid disease etc. Good to have this checked out by a doctor if the shedding seems abnormal or if its coming out in patchy spots. I lost nearly all my hair when I was younger due to a disorder but it grew back with help from my dermatologist

If you wash it every day the hair have no chance to produce a balanced amount of oil for your scalp. So you destroy your natural oils everyday which would normally give you shiny healthy hair. Just try not to wash it for 3 days and use a little bit dryshampoo.

Thank you so much for the discussion including debunking "hair training". I had always believed that while the skin of the scalp is a going concern hair itself like fingernails is essentially dead stuff. Taking care of hair is about keeping the hair shaft intact and smooth. I love all the wonderful products you list and want to try all of them. My straight superfine hair and bone dry scalp can use lots of help. Finally bought good shampoo - currently trying Olaplex and Pureology - and getting up my nerve to try stuff like masks and oils. I'm older now but had an oily scalp most of my life and it's hard to let go of ideas and habits that don't make sense anymore.

If you have an oily scalp, here’s a trick I have for you - right before you shampoo, use a light oil such as jojoba oil on your scalp, it can loosen any build up and oil. Try this out and tell me if it works! Additionally make sure you shampoo your hair twice on that day. It will make a huge difference.

Also!!!! Would you mind sharing tips on how to sleep with long hair? My hair is too weak to even tie back, and too thin to even put up in a clip. I had been sleeping on it loose with satin pillow cases, and bought a silk sleeping bonnet…. But I feel like I wake up after using the bonnet and my hair feels so greasy, sweaty, smelly, and like I need to wash it- whereas I can usually go a whole week without washing my hair! Do you have thoughts on this or can you think of any alternatives? I know using a sleep cap is supposed to be protective, hydrating, and reduces friction and breakage… I wonder why I’m getting such odd results! 🙏🏻♥️

I tried to train my hair too, before realizing that doesn't work. Plus I always got forehead breakouts when I did, and I'd rather not get the breakout to begin with instead of having the possiblity of being left with a dark mark (my skin is more important to me than my hairXD ). My hair is very healthy even though I wash every day, largely due to combing my hair less, and using leave in conditioner/oils, and not using hot tools or blow drying; + my skin is happier too! (PS: I'm not claiming not washing your hair frequently will definitely cause breakouts, but if you have forehead breakouts and you can't figure out why, that could be what's causing it)

I have very damaged super-fine straight hair and have been trying to only wash once a week but my hair only looks good for about two days and gets super greasy by midweek even with dry shampoo (I don't use any styling products at all, I just embrace the straight). So I started doing a co-wash midweek and it really really helps with the oiliness. My thinking is that I can rinse out the excess oil and the conditioner helps mitigate the water damage. Then I do leave-in conditioner, air dry (I got thin hair, it doesn't take long), and use a few drops of hair oil on the ends like I do on wash day. My favorite oily hair hairstyle is two low braids (which is about half the time since it gets greasy so fast).

The main reason being that it forms a protective layer on the hair but doesn't actually condition the hair. So if your hair is dry, silicones will lock in the dryness. The hair follicles of non washers were filled with gunk, sebum, dry shampoo dirt. Your hair starts at the root, scalp health is where I begin my hair care. Hair is dead and you can help with products. Your scalp ages just like all skin, take care of it and your hair health will follow

I shower at night, so how long does the oil/conditioning agent need to be in your hair to help protect in when washing? If I sprayed it in after I got home from work and let it sit for a few hours before showering would that be sufficient? Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge💜

This is so helpful! What’s your midweek reconditioning routine? Do you add conditioner or cream and oil every day until wash day?

Hi sorry just, do you actually have health anxiety? I just ask because, as someone who does have health anxiety, I see people use the term hypochondriac similarly to how they use the term OCD, to describe an actually fairly normal response as something they consider abnormal - while not really understanding the full extent of what having that mental illness actually means or how it impacts people.
If you do struggle with health anxiety absolutely no offense meant at all, just some thoughts I had about how people view that type of anxiety in general.
    (Love the video though!)

For me personally Olaplex 3 is better. I didn’t see the benefits of K18.

Wash my scalp everyday with a rosemary oil shampoo and no issues with dryness or hair loss. I tried the hair training and it made my hair worse.

omg I'm experiencing the same thing with hair loss! I moved out of my parents house in NJ to Tennessee and the hard water here in TN is HORRIFIC. I feel like I've lost half the hair I used to have and it makes me wanna cry. I try SO hard to take care of my hair with the right products. What do you recommend for hard water? do you have a favorite shower filter?

    • @pcru6851
      @pcru6851 ปีที่แล้ว

I live in Texas. We have hard water too. I have had hair loss and breakage as well. So, i understand the feeling of fear over losing your hair. The concern over "am i going bald". I had lost so much hair you could easily see my scalp through what little hair i had even in dim lighting.
What I have found to actually improve my hair health and combat the mineral deposits are:
      1. Get a hard water filter. There are bathtub filters and shower head filters. There are different kinds. But it Must Say Removes Mineral Deposits or for Hard Water.
      2. After you install the filler. Clarify your hair with a Chelating Shampoo. Sally's has a shampoo for Hard Water for Says it in Big Letters for $9.
      3. Deep Condition your hair with a Moisturizing Conditioner. Because of the Hard Water Deposits your hair is dry and brittle. That is why it is causing breakage. Chelating will dry your hair even more BUT your hair will be free of all mineral deposits. Clean slate for the deep conditioner. I deep condition every time I used any shampoo. My hair was dry and brittle for years. It will take sometime grow out/trim off the damage. Best to prevent the new damage.
I have very tight curls. I noticed a BIG difference in my skin and hair after the Hard Water Filter. I still Chelate my hair after a new filter install or when I see or feel the mineral deposits. My hair gets weighed down and my curls looks stretched. My roots are oily and flat. My brush will be dirty faster even after I have cleaned the brush and my hair.
Hope your hair does better. Good Luck.

What is your opinion on wearing a hat? On my day six I usually grab the hat as an option to cover oily hair. At that point I don’t want to add any more product to what I already have on (Aka dry shampoo). Thanks. And Love all your videos

Hello. Sooooo....I've tried K18 however only twice. I'm trying to stick with it for the "6" washes but I have NOT noticed anything different in my hair. Everything I see on the internet just goes on and on about how great K18 is. I'm still hopeful but why am I not seeing the results everyone else seems to see? Love your channel by the way :)

I did co wash for 10 or 12 years. Maybe used shampoo 5 times in those years. My hair was amazing. I've stopped because all the conditioners I loved I couldn't find any more and my hair is... not great. 😪 I miss my co wash hair.
