Photograph Kingfishers diving into the water. Continuing with a series of hides available for rent I visited the well known kingfisher hide at Droitwich in Worcestershire. Now under new management.

Beautiful. I wish these guys lived in the US too. We have the belted kingfisher, which I don't find to be as pretty.
I agree our Kingfishe is attractive.

Mike, many thanks for your review of the hide. As a very regular user and as I said in another comment, an admin of the facebook presence. I would just like to comment on a couple of your points for clarification. The Shelf in the hide is there to eliminate the need for a tripod, it is made for a hide plate/gimbal combination or a bean bag. Perches are a little big, as you say, Sharon is not a photographer and unfortunately, due to covid, no-one could go in the early stages of the re-opening so the bird is very much accustomed to bigger perches and shies away from thin ones. (It is a different male dominant now) . We are trying to wean him off them. Perch hight is low, this does as you say mean that the bird often flies upwards but what this gives is a great chance to get a hovering shot. From experience, a focal length of 400mm up to 500mm FF is ideal. Many 600mm lenses do not focus close enough for the perch set up there. The original info said for diving, 70-200 as someone has commented on, ideal diving lens would be a 100-400. 200mm FF will get you some good start off shots then as you move up to 300+, you will get some good shots if luck is with you but you also increase the chances of clipped wings, tail, beak etc because trajectory back to perch is not always the same. Again, thanks for the great Video and for acknowledge the work undertaken by Sharon and Pete to improve the hides and try to mend the, quite frankly, justifiably awe-full reputation brought on it by the previous owner following on from Marks sad death

This is an excellent presentation, with an huge amount of useful information given for free , it can take years to acquire this type of knowledge, it will be so helpful in my photo adventure in the quest to capture my first kingfisher shots , thank you and well done .

Great video Mike, the 120fps footage looks incredible. I’ve had good success shooting dive shots on wide zone focus mode and bird eye af priority with the A1 if you get chance to try. Keep up the great work

Great vidoe Mike. I visited here a few years ago and had a great day. It did then go a bit downhill tbh and reviews were really bad, but its great to see the farmer has built the new hide and it looks better than ever!

Fabulous! Long term id love to hear your thoughts on the A1, as like many it’s something I’ve considered or at least pondered on for a while. By the by where did you get it?
Thanks very much for sharing. I'm setting up a wildlife filming and photography park in Thailand, and I'm seeing some very interesting ideas on your channel. I'm working on getting the lower front part of the hide at the right angle for tripods. I only shoot video, so filming on bean bags would be very limiting. I particularly appreciate your comments on the size of perch and can see very clearly that you get much nicer images with your smaller and greener perches.

I'm no expert but I seem to hear a lot of people criticise these arrangements where a small enclosed area is baited, I don't understand what the issue is, what's your take on that?
There are people against it and it is also very popular. There are quite a few commercial sites for Kingfisher and they can be fully booked up. I do not think there are many things you can do today that someone is not against.
Beautiful slow motion on the Kingfishers Mike with the Sony A1. I had a bit more of a challenge with the A1 last week on the Dippers in North Devon with the white breast, but still got some incredible footage its an amazing camera ! Great work Mike lovely video still learning all the time with the A1 so many setting choices ! 👍

Great video as usual Mike. I'd be interested to know more of your thoughts on the stills from the A1 and 200-600. Obviously the FF sensor will make a difference over m43 and pixel count. At present I have little interest in doing video myself...just stills, but having owned the Olympus 300mm pro, the Sony 200-600 would have to go some to equal or surpass the Oly 300 in terms of sharpness?
I am happy with the quality from both the Sony and Olympus gear I have. I do not notice a difference in picture quality. The Sony AF is miles ahead of Olympus and the 4K 120 fps AF too.
Great shots and slow motion.... I would love to learn anything you’ve done over the years in regards to these great king fishers ... like at the. Of the video u were mentioning something about lowering a fish bowl ...? Is this to get the underwater shot ? Thanks mike keep up the good work
No it was a different why of holding the fish. We lowered the bowl just below the water using an electric motor when the Kingfisher was on the branch. When he was away we highed it out if the water so the fish could not escape. The method showed in this film is easier.
Great video sir. I had one question , while you are recording all this video footage do you use any picture profiles and do you grade your videos in post?
No picture profiles used and no grading done.
great video slow motion, may I know whether the shuttler speed need to set to a fast speed to prevent blur as what we do for photography bird in flight. There are some people saying need set to double speed of flame rate which should be 120 multiply by 2, 1/240 sec. it is necessary?
I now ignore the shutter speed rule. I shoot at a minimum of double the frame rate, but can see no difference if I go faster. One day I might bump into someone who can show me why I am wrong in this, but they are going to have to show me and not just tell me.
Yes, I tried faster speed from 1/400 to 1/1600 sec before and if I set to automatic , it was 1/60sec, I see no difference in video so far.
Thanks for posting this Mike. Very useful as with all of your videos. Am booked into this hide next month. The original promotional material suggested 400mm for the perched shots and 70-200 for the diving shots on FF. interested that you suggest 500-600 for the perched shots. What focal length would you recommend for the diving shots when using Sony FF lenses?
I would be using about 400mm.

Hi Mike, another great video. I shot with the same setup and I'm really impressed with your stills and the video. Can you please tell me the best time of year to photograph the Kingfisher in Worcester and your preferred camera mode/aperture/ISO to shoot at 1/4000? Thinking of revisiting the UK next year (Covid-19 permitting) Cheers Colin from Oz
I have only visited the site once, but generally the best time for maximum visits is when they have a nest full of youngsters close by. They can have three broods a year from May to August. Best to keep in touch with the owner asking how many visits are occuring.
These days I am using manual expose with auto ISO with the lens wide open.

The quality of the Sony footage looks superb. I presume the stills are better than the Olympus/300f4 too ? I have been holding back on buying Sony as the 200-600 lens I could afford is a zoom but from your video the quality looks stellar.
John. Prior to switching back to Olympus, I owned a Sony A7III, A9 and A7R4 + Sony 100 - 400mm GMaster and Sony 200 - 600mm. The 200 - 600mm is superb, especially when attached to the A7R4. The internal zoom means it is really well balanced, far better than the 100 - 400mm GMaster. It also produces cracking still images (I don't do video). Overall, I rated it better than my 100 - 400mm.
I can see no difference in quality between the Sony and Olympus. The Sony AF is miles ahead of Olympus and I am making good use of the 120 fps 4K.

@@MikeLaneFRPS . Thanks Mike. I have been tempted by the Canon R5 and100-500 for bird photography as the Af is much better than the Oly. The Sony A1 plus 200-600 must be similar to the R5. Did you go Sony over Canon mainly for its video properties ? The quality of this kingfisher video does appear to be the best I have seen on your channel.

I'd use a 300 mm with a 1.4 extender would this be enough?
With a full frame only just.
Mike photographed there in the past with Mark and just after he handed it over. My last two visits were really disappointing in terms of visits. Go to hear you had 5 visits. Would you go again?
Not planning to. I have photographed Kingfishers many times.
How do you anticipate the diving moment when all you can see at hide ground level on the camera is the pre-focused water surface and not the perch? I mean the time between diving and returning to the perch is only a split second.
You do not look through the camera at all. You watch the bird on the branch.
@@MikeLaneFRPS Right. So I'm assuming the perch is visible from ground level? and the moment the bird leaves it you fire the shutter in high fps at the already prefocused water surface?
Yes. The camera will be low down but I could be sitting on a chair using a cable release. As it leaves the perch you start the camera running at the maximum fps.
