Never. In fact Ive never seen a lifter collapse and cause a ticking noise on the Pentastar. I only replace them if its in the customers budget. Which 90% of the time its not
I have seen other mechanics take the cam sensors off the valve covers before removing the valve cover. That may help with removing the valve cover. Make sure to replace cam sensors back to the same cam phaser. I haven't heard of cam phasers malfunctioning, but I do know that material can get stuck inside the cam phaser and that you could clean it out instead of replacing with new cam phasers. Also, I didn't see you use any tool to depress the tensioner, but I didn't understand how you still had all that slack. Must not matter so much, but correct me JT.
Thanks for your great videos. Definitely learning a lot. Im replacing the timing chain on a 3.6 engine in a 2014 Grand Cherokee. It's a stradegy I use when I bring up TDC. I can't explain because it's a feel. But I highly recommend no one to do this. Not a good idea, please use the tools.
Awesome video. Can you explain about how to time a 2010 Mazda CX-9 3.7 duratec engine. How would you verify the engine is in TDC on the compression stroke other than relying on the timing marks?
One simple way of verifying any engine TDC on number 1 cylinder. Remove all the plugs except for number 1 cylinder. Rotate the crank shaft by hand while looking at the timing marks. Once you feel the compression on that cylinder you know it's close to TDC, then simply line up the timing marks, as by then you're right there at TDC. It works every time, can't go wrong as long as the crank shaft timing marks are there.
Ford tech here. the dowel for the crank gear should be pointing at 12 oclock. that will be close enough and when you put the chain on just use the colored links to match up the dots on the cams and crank gear and you will be fine. cant mess it up that way. just make sure to crank the crank pulley down tight or you will have trouble later
Great Vid....thanx.....i noticed that the phaser magnets on the rear of all 4 camshafts have some kind of grease on them' all the way around each one, kinda silvery looking. your vid shows that too. Should it be wiped off? A new cam does not have a special lube pack from rock auto. . Is it necessary or is that a metal build up?
Yea man thats like powdered shaving being atracted to the magnet. You should clean that off because the cam sensor needs to read that. Thanks for watching
question, I changed all rollers and rockers some how my marks got off my mistake I'm sure my question is when comes to timing everything stats that the 3.6 times at TDC on the exhaust stroke this seems strange to me I always thought it would time TDC on compression stroke any help would B greatly appreciated. Thank U
JT, have you done any videos on how to visually check the phasers while you have them off, for example when you replace a cam for a cam follower failure?
I only use and recommend the OEM Mopar parts for this engine. Now some may argue that it was the Mopar part that originally failed. Keep in mind all parts have a life span to them. Also keep in mind that you hardly ever going on with the same part. Meaning that most of these parts have been revised and upgraded so they not the same as on your car. I dont know of any other company that sell these,

Question, this doesnt require to release tension from the timing chain tensioner right? Im only working on Bank 1 side and would love do exactly this method without messing with the tensioner
Nice. I do have a question for you. a shop told us that its either check Phaser or tone ring? Phaser I got but how can you test the tone ring? Its on the back of the cam right?
Hey so I messaged you the other day on my husbands account. We had replaced rockers, lifters and a cam we thought we jumped time after we turned it over had someone come and look at it turns out we didn't jump time. when we started the vehicle the idle was rough so i shut it off and then tried starting it again but it wont start now it turns over just wont start any suggestions?
I just bought a 2015 caravan and both exhaust valve cam lobes are worn away on cyl 2! engine making almost a rod knock sound??? Is the sound from trapped combustion? All other cam lobes look fine on left head. Have not looked right head yet but engine ran like it had 1 cyl dropping out. Question is - why did both these only lobes wear away? Was there a blockage of oil supply or thats just the way they fail?? Also, how do you know that the phasers are bad on the engines you service?? Your advise on how to proceed with this repair and what to change? Just swap the cam and the two lifters and rockers for cyl 2?
I can’t find ANYTHING on the 2014 impala. It has a tick that’s 99% coming from the valve train, but the bottom of the timing chain cover is over the bottom portion of the oil control valve. Can’t get the locking block in so I’m a little iffy. 🤦🏾♂️
lol, no witch craft sir. Thats why i just let the camera roll and did not chop up any part of that clip. So you can see that it do not take a lot of slack at all to put them on. Its all in the positioning of that camshaft that you turning with the wrench an slightly lifting up on the chain/phaser to create even more slack.
Why is it so easy to put them right side phaser on when all i need is 1/16 inch more to install. I hope the timing chain hasn't come off at the bottom. I did this one time before ... the marks were off so I'm doing it again.
I did this and i think my shit messed up, when i start it it makes a screeching noise, throwing error code P0019 and P000C, does that mean my timing is off?
Likely, curious, did you mark it before taking it apart? Because at the point you simply put it bact together using the marks on the new phasers. Also are you subscribed to the channel?
JT, some guy changed bank 1 exh camshaft to try and clear a camshaft sensor code. Now car drives under powered, wont shift right and 0014/0017 are coding. The timing marks dont line up perfectly on bank 1 phasers. How can I tell if he re assembled in the wrong chain position or more likely a bad phaser? Please help...Im opened up and looking at it many hours...Alan In Boise ID

Hello, my 2011 town and country has leaking valves. At 74k miles only on the front cylinders or bank 2 I believe. How much work is it to replace valve stem seals?
s there a way to adjust the timing without marks? I took the chain out and my stupidity allowed me to turn the the sprocket s individually, which turned the cams. Now I have no idea where I am at. Call me an idiot because I am. 2015 Chev malibu 2.5

O nooooo, the chain not suppose to skip a tooth. Curious, were you rotating counter clockwise? You may have to take the timing cover off now to get engine properly in time and replace that tensioner while you at it.
@@OnlineMechanicTipsthank you JT for the quick response, I did rotate it clockwise , Is there a chance that the chain is not doing its job properly? or the tensioner? can it be done in a home garage?

Hey bud, for the record, this is a terrible video and could be mis leading..I do not recommend you do it this way.USE THE TOOLS. This the way I do it because I'm pressed for time and I have done a lot of them so the theory fairly simple to me

Never. In fact Ive never seen a lifter collapse and cause a ticking noise on the Pentastar. I only replace them if its in the customers budget. Which 90% of the time its not
Your the mannnn thanks for this very informative video!!!! I love what you do an thanks for sharing you got the swag an the skills. Straight up
Thanks for watching bud. Appreciate that.
That was clean...great video👏👏
Thanks for your great videos. Definitely learning a lot. Im replacing the timing chain on a 3.6 engine in a 2014 Grand Cherokee. When I put cylinder 1 bank one/passenger side on TDC on the compression stroke all sprockets/phasers end up backwards and upside down.
Is it possible it was put back together backwards by some else. It looks like someone had done work on it already. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Always great content thanks JT
Appreciate it!
So far, excellent videos! I want to check my vvt oil control solenoid on my 2015 Ram 1500 with the 3.6L engine. I haven’t been able to find the location of that part. Can you help me? Thanks in advance for answering.
Sir I’m subscribed to this channels I’m doing this job and things gone smooth on my 2014 sxt 3.6 penstar got I the cams of on my both heads I know u said the driver side head U can remove with the trick and tool to get k. The tight spot But is passanger bank able to be removed to without timing cover coming off ?like the driver side ?
How do you know if your cam phaser is no good?? Appreciate the great info! Thanks
OMT, is there a small amount of backlash between the camshaft and the phaser? if you put the wrench on the Cam, will it move a hair independent of the phaser?
It depend. Are you on bank 1 or bank 2? Which head? Also are you subscribed to the channel?

Hey men when does cam phasers go bad your check eng comes on? , or why you replace them ?
That was a very informative video JT, Looks like you’ve done a few of those lol
i've had that right bank (1) tensioner plunger pop all the way out on me and I had to remove the supercharger, intercooler and timing cover etc. major suck!
Hi, I have to change the 2 on the driver’s side, how can I buy it? Do they have a specific name on each side?
Not really understanding ya question. If you mean the cam phasers, there's a exhaust phaser an a intake phaser. Why are you replacing them? Also are you subscribed to the channel?
Hey man you wouldn’t happen to be in Dallas Texas area?
I'm not, sorry
YOU MUST BE SO FAMOUS NOW BC I CANT GET A REPLY LOL😂ANY WAY the motor i replaced rockers and lifters why when motor is cold it sounds beautiful but when it build a little heat it sounds like the chain is loose or something tia
I got the passenger side done with this trick. But driver cams seems further apart requiring more slack. Does this no tool trick work on the driver side we well?

I used this method and it worked on passenger side. Driver side its not working.

Your help will come in the form of having the correct tools for this job. Bank 2 head requires special tools that you need.
@@OnlineMechanicTips i have the timing tool. Its popping out every time i let go of it
how does the timing chaim tensioner not get fully extended?
It's a stradegy I use when I bring up TDC. I can't explain because it's a feel. But I highly recommend no one to do this. Not a good idea, please use the tools.
Hello,sir. When need change dodge engine 3.5 - 3.6 chains?? 200k miles ? 300kmiles? Or more? Thanks !!!!!!!
b ank 1 has been a huge pain in the ass to line up. Dodge cam and lifters and rockers. F'n damn things will not line up!!!!!!
have you noted how different torque specs for oil control valve on same engine but different makes and models?
No I havent. Thats interesting. I need to look into that, thanks
Bro you need to move to Austin Texas I’d go to you for all my work I may just drive up where you’re at to do some work on my 2014 Charger
Great video! Thank you! What are the torque specs for the phasers?

question, I changed all rollers and rockers some how my marks got off my mistake I'm sure my question is when comes to timing everything stats that the 3.6 times at TDC on the exhaust stroke this seems strange to me I always thought it would time TDC on compression stroke any help would B greatly appreciated. Thank U
You don't seem worried about losing chain positions on the crankshaft
How did you get your valve cover off with the trans filler tube there!??
JT, have you done any videos on how to visually check the phasers while you have them off, for example when you replace a cam for a cam follower failure?
Do you have a recommendation as to a brand name for teh phasers? I see the Mopar, but also other brands. Do you always use Mopar? Yes I subscribed.
I dont know of any other company that sell these,
@@OnlineMechanicTips Thank you. I have a 2015 Jeep and I get a p0390 and Limp mode on the highway uphill under load. Its almost killed my a couple times. I am tearing down soon. Have all new rockers, lifters, spark plugs, and will be doing phasers. I am hoping the front oil plugs are loose because thats what I have heard causes this issue in the 2015. Oil cavitated and looses pressure to the phaser through the loose bolt threads. Thanks for your reply. I will order Mopar. Have nice day. Love your videos and honesty. the world needs more good guys like you sir !
What socket are you using to loosen the cam
So I guess while I was working on a 15 ram tradesmen 3.6 driver side intake side the tool shot out and the tensioner extended out all the way and I can get JT to release and get my tool back in the right spot and to make things worse the cam jumped time and I can’t get anything to go back correctly what do I have to do to fix this problem I really need some help
How did you back the VVT/phaser bolts out when your socket was going clockwise when you switched to the Fuel ratchet?
I have no clue what you mean dude. What you talking about?
What would happen if you installed the phaser actuators in the wrong position?
Bro you Life saver 👍
If you're replacing the right bank 1 side valve train, is it necessary to remove the left bank 2 valve cover? I have heard to remove both side valve covers, even if working on only one side, but is it for ensuring that all four phasers/cams are aligned perfectly? Or can I just remove right valve cover? Thanks.
Yea thats done for visual confidence. You don't have to. Just go by the marks on the phasers to assure timing will be on point.
@@OnlineMechanicTipsThanks for your response. It gives me more confidence in doing this job. Appreciate your informative, no-nonsense videos. Very educational, keep producing them!
Will a bad bank 1 cam phaser cause a bog down or lack of communication with the position sensor?
What codes did you find guy? Also are you subscribed to the channel?
Less talkie talkie, more workie workie!
Lmao
Question: How do you know if or when the Cam phasers are bad or when they need to be replaced?
I was wondering the same thing
They knock at start up and might even set a engine code.
Ever run into chain jumping a tooth or two to the left after pulling out cam phaser on intake side there ? Meaning had all set to TDC made my marks on chain, phaser its all straight as it should but when I pulled oil control valve bolt/ then cam phaser off the chain some how went left a tooth but cam and phaser stayed straight at TDC...reaching out hopefully some knows what I'm saying and can steer me in right direction.. thank you
Hey bud, im curious if you are using the special tools? There are tools design to prevent this and keep chain guide in position while you dissasemble valve train. This video was done without the proper tools because somebody wanted to know how I do it. Also are you subscribed to the channel?
@@OnlineMechanicTips hey man thank you for getting back to me. yes id did subscribe!
I'm trying to do this without the special tools at the moment.
Question, this doesnt require to release tension from the timing chain tensioner right? Im only working on Bank 1 side and would love do exactly this method without messing with the tensioner
Yes it requires that. I highly suggest you use the proper tools design for this job.
Nice. I do have a question for you. a shop told us that its either check Phaser or tone ring? Phaser I got but how can you test the tone ring? Its on the back of the cam right?
Yes the tone wheel are pressed fit on the rear of the cam shaft. There is a tool for testing it. Also are you subscribed to the channel?
I am. I’m in a whole new world now. So what would these tools look like to test it? Measurement, sound, X-ray? I can’t even fathom how to test it.
Is there a torque spec for the vvt on the camshaft???
How much do you think i should charge for rocker arms for 2 cams and 2 cams to be changed
I need some tools for don't move the timing chain?
Hey so I messaged you the other day on my husbands account. We had replaced rockers, lifters and a cam we thought we jumped time after we turned it over had someone come and look at it turns out we didn't jump time. when we started the vehicle the idle was rough so i shut it off and then tried starting it again but it wont start now it turns over just wont start any suggestions?
Looks easy when you do it. Is it me or the 3.6 seam to have alot of valve problems.
No valve problems. Valve train sys problems maybe. Mainly poorly built rocker arms that has been repaired nod.
Sounds like you have bad rocker arms. The bearing failed and wrecks camshaft.
I can’t find ANYTHING on the 2014 impala. It has a tick that’s 99% coming from the valve train, but the bottom of the timing chain cover is over the bottom portion of the oil control valve. Can’t get the locking block in so I’m a little iffy. 🤦🏾♂️
What size of wrench to hold the cam while unbolting it?
JT this is some witch craft!!! How is the tensionor on the other bank not extending out and stopping you from putting the phasers back on???
lol, no witch craft sir. Thats why i just let the camera roll and did not chop up any part of that clip. So you can see that it do not take a lot of slack at all to put them on. Its all in the positioning of that camshaft that you turning with the wrench an slightly lifting up on the chain/phaser to create even more slack.
I bet this is why I can't get rid of the P0024 code on my 09 Maxima.
6:32 Job start.
Make it look so easy.
Why is it so easy to put them right side phaser on when all i need is 1/16 inch more to install. I hope the timing chain hasn't come off at the bottom.
I did this one time before ... the marks were off so I'm doing it again.
Do you have to drain the oil before doing this
No, but I do a oil and coolant service after this
I did this and i think my shit messed up, when i start it it makes a screeching noise, throwing error code P0019 and P000C, does that mean my timing is off?
Likely, curious, did you mark it before taking it apart? Because at the point you simply put it bact together using the marks on the new phasers. Also are you subscribed to the channel?

Please help...Im opened up and looking at it many hours...Alan In Boise ID

I have never made an attempt at such a repair. Im not sure buddy
I seen a guy take a phaser apart once in a video, he could not get it back together and ended up replacing it.
Thanks for the video
But what about the tensioners, aren't the timing chain teeth supposed to move if you don't use the proper tools?
Hey bud, I highly suggest you to use the proper tools to do this job. The only reason this video exist was because guys wanted to how I really do it..We work off time so after doing a number of these jobs you tend to understand and create shortcuts.

What size is the phaser bolt size 35?
hi JT, can you help me please, I have a 2012 jeep wrangler 3.6 pentastar, I'm trying to fix the ticking problem, I did your test 👍 and I rotate the engine from the harmonic balancer and I noticed that the chain skips , what can be the problem?? also the camshafts are not aline

Bro we already know mechanics take major shortcuts to save time because most of them work by the job and the job has a set amount of hours that supposed to take so if you can get ahead of that you're good if you get behind that you're screwed so no worries just don't f*** it up and you're fine who cares how you get it done
