    Our cleaning lady has been with us since our twins were babies, 7 years now. She’s a life/sanity saver :)
    She’s not a company, just a mum that needs to make some extra money. We adore her. She even baby sat for half hour this week while cleaning. I had to pick up middle child and she offered to keep the others at home.

    Please do the budgeting series. I struggle with the scarcity mentality, would love to see a video on that. Also a video on how you locate ethically sourced items.
    This was not preachy. God gave you a great message to share. Thank you for sharing it.

      Spot on Katherine! I struggle with the scarcity mentality as well. It is such a huge issue for me, and it drives my sweet husband bonkers.
      I'd love to see more on this topic as well Angie, and this video was great!

    It's funny how this stuff is so logical and yet many don't do it, but seem to hold it against those that do make the sacrifices needed to get into the position where you can splurge every now and then. So so true 're different families/ different situation too. It's not a cookie cutter solution. Great video Angie !!

    I am so happy you included generosity in your list of family splurges. That is absolutely the heart God's wants us to have towards giving. Splurging is fun and so is being generous. Thank you for not shying away from talking about God and money.

    I do not have a large family (only 3 kids) but I really enjoy watching different families’ budgeting videos! Love how you stress that different people are going to have different priorities and splurges. People can get really judgey about things that others choose to spend money on.
    Also- my 9 year old son’s current plan is to move to NC and start his own landscaping company when he grows up 😉

    Love this 💕 my pastor recently did a sermon on giving/ finances and one thing he said really stuck with me. Our finances are intended to be a distribution center not a storehouse. It really struck me because I really struggle with trusting God to take care of me and provide for me. This past month my husband has been laid off and it’s been really hard but God has provided everything we need. All of our bills have been paid. Our church paid our rent. Like it was just crazy!

    I was just talking about this with my husband this morning. We are very frugal so we can splurge where we want to. For us, we like having a nicer car. We don't eat out or have cable to afford that. It's hard deciding what is right for you, especially when you have so many people pushing travel as the best way to spend extra money. We hate traveling and would much rather spend more on our house and car. It's taken a while to realize that it is a personal choice and now I get where other people are coming from, even if I wouldn't spend money in that area. I still don't like talking to other people about these things because it is so personal and people often respond negatively to these things because they don't understand my personal choices.

    • @angela.braniff
      @angela.braniff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes- it’s so weird to talk about these things when people can’t understand that we all value and enjoy different things! I totally get liking a nice car! But yes- the point is we all have areas we choose to be frugal- and choose to splurge. Do what works for YOU!!! 💗

    • @MarisaAndChew
      @MarisaAndChew 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hate traveling, I don't even leave my small town most of the time unless my kids have sports and I have to! I would much rather splurge on my plants, my pets, getting take out and more simple things that just make me feel good. My phone is like 5 or 6 years old, I plan to keep it until I need to upgrade because apps don't work or it drops dead, for me the environmental impact of upgrading every year isn't worth it, but for others it totally is and I respect that too! Your nicer car is likely pricey per month but likely also is better for the environment than my old car that I spend more on fuel. It is always a give and a take. I think once you realize what you do is for YOU and you don't have to keep up with anyone you're well on your way to being content!!

    It's really interesting learning what people focus at any point in time. The last point you made was really beautiful and a good thing to share because I think that we all get busy and don't actively focus on others and what we can do to give them what they need whether it's money, time and all other forms of giving. I've found it really hard to find my purpose over the last ten years as my health gets progressively worse. I had to give up work as a teacher and also being a foster Mum. I'm mainly bedridden apart from medical appointments and I prayed that God would let me know what my purpose is now. I started on focusing on prayer for others and to offer people on social media a person to talk to. When I watch channels I feel like God is telling me to reach out even if it's just a positive comment and cheering on from the sidelines. I know that our purpose isn't always clear and may never be but it's still so important to keep looking for simple things that may help others. I love your family and everything you stand for. You are an incredible loving Mum, Wife Sister, Mother etc and a really good example for us. Just in case you need to know you did not come across as preachy at all. All your videos are very relevant. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Xx

    I was on the fence about hiring a cleaning lady after jumping from a family of 4 to 7 in December. Friends kept telling me to do it, but I had an all or nothing mindset and didn't feel I needed someone to clean my whole house for me. It wasn't until I watch one of your videos where you said you hire some one to just do part of the cleaning that I realized I could do that too🤦‍♀️. I took the plung and she has come every week for a month now and it has been so great. One the hardest things is to admit that we need help and that it's okay to get that help.

    You know, the more I watch your videos, the more I appreciate how thoughtful and outspoken you are, even though I disagree with you on a lot of things generally. I am impressed with your consideration of others when it comes to cheap fashion - it is such a struggle to be mindful when your own frugality is on the line, and it shouldn't be. I appreciate your message of understanding and giving others space to decide what is important to them when it comes to spending - but it was fun to see what your guys' splurges are!

    • @angela.braniff
      @angela.braniff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well I’m glad you’re here. It’s not often people can disagree and still be kind. I’ve learned over the years that I can only really know and do what’s best for me. Our circumstances inform so much of our thinking and it’s naive to think there’s a cookie cutter formula that just works for everyone. 💗

    My husband made me way more generous when it comes to tips and donating. We met when we were both broke students and i was raised to be very protective about every dollar because my parents used to struggle a lot with money when they were young. We are in a pretty comfortable place now moneywise and i started to see the beauty in being able to help others out who are not so fortunate. Worries about the future still get me once in a while especially since we are now planning to build a house within the next few years and have to take on a big loan but i am stressing way less about our financial future than i used to.

    PS I'd love a video on how you personally, as a busy homeschooling, working mom and wife, stay attached to Jesus- and how you make time (when, if you journal, etc) prayer, and Bible study for yourself. How you stay grounded and focused on what's important. Keeping God first in your heart and busy life.

    We just added a 4yr old little boy to our family as our 5th. It has rocked my world. He eats as much as 2 and isn’t potty trained so 2x the laundry with accidents. So it feels like we added 2 and I’m having to change ALL my systems.

    This is such an interesting topic. My husband and I have family members on both sides that have struggled financially for years. We both knew we didn’t want that life if possible. We have two kids and they both are little but have savings accounts and college funds. We are not necessarily frugal but definitely live well within our means and have very little debt. Financial freedom is very important for us and something to be able to pass on to our children. And in the event our children decide they don’t want to go to college then we can take the money with a penalty and do something fun for ourselves! Lol

    I have always said to myself daily “I have more than I need”. That can be different for each person or family. It’s not like storing away a bunch of extra money but more like I am able to be generous. I only had 2 children but over the years have picked a few strays that my nieces an nephews called themselves when they needed me for variety of reasons. : I have always been big on experiences also. Laundry has always been 1 load per person each week. I ave used a service a few times when my daughter was in the hospital and I had to make choices that helped me be the mom she needed me to be. I took a Dave Ramsey class and was AMAZED how families first thought was to cut the budget for Groceries!!!! I know some eat out a lot etc but they were ready to eat beans and rice before cutting their cable! I chose to buy better food. As a hairstylist, It was nice to hear how getting your hair colored at a salon was important to you. Believe me , I do appreciate my own clients who relentlessly have to tell their husbands “but it’s the ONLY thing I do for MYSELF..”. Mind you, all of this has absolutely anything to do with how much money someone makes...it’s about CHOICES.

    I tell my kids your money is your vote. It is important to back companies that are philanthropic, sustainable, and/or have kind labor practices. If we dont have the money at the moment to do that we buy used. I may be buying things that aren't necessarily in line with my ethics but my dollar isn't going to the company that produces it.

    I love that you love to change your hair color! So do I; but, it didn't come about until our oldest daughter decided she wanted to go to cosmetology school! She didn't end up doing it as a career; however, our youngest daughter followed that schooling and did make it into a career and has her own salon with several stylists working there. She loves it and I love it, too! I, also, have had my hair every natural color. (When I retired, I did have a fuchsia as I was selling a costume jewelry brand as a supplemental income to my social security that hot pink was their brand color and I thought it might help my business--NOT!) Anyway, she won't let me pay her for any of her services, etc., so we've done a lot and she's kept me from the "gray world"! Retirement has also given us a new outlook on our budget. We definitely watch our purchasing.

    I really appreciated the way you approached this video. I almost didn't watch it because I can struggle with jealousy over what others can afford vs what I can (single income homeschool mom of 3 who in 10 years of marriage has not been on a vacation other than our honeymoon - when I feel that feeling of envy bubbling up, I cut off social media so it doesn't tempt me to compare myself to others) I'm excited to splurge and spend money on your book.

    I loved what you said about when you have more you don't build a higher fence you build a longer table. My parents lived this life, they always made sure that everyone was taken care of.... In 1987 my dad was in a really bad car accident and God provided everything we needed he was broken in half down the right side of his whole body. The doctors will sure he would never walk again and 18 months later he walked he went back to work and during this entire time my parents were the same two people they always were there was always someone that needed a helping hand more than we did and somehow or another they always helped they truly amazed me. My dad always said live your best life it's about the experience not the dollar.

    Girl! That is my EXACT list! The only thing you left out that my mom puts on hers even though it seems like it might not need to be on the list is food. We try to purchase local and organic as much as possible which definitely costs more but the health benefits to the family and of course supporting local and organic agriculture wherever we can and supporting the health of the soil and our local water ways is all just so important to us. I LOVED this video! Thank you for sharing! I’ve never found another gal with my EXACT list! :)

    Wow, thank you! I really, really needed to hear this today. I have struggled with a hoarding mentality consistently throughout my life. Not because I have ever had a lack of anything but because it stems from my Great Grandparents and Grandparents that lived in through the Great Depression or on the tail end of it. My Great Grandparents came from Czechoslovakia so they really struggled to have enough and so that mentality has just passed on down the line. I am trying to balance it. Try not to have too many clothes, only stuff me or my husband and 3 children wear on a consistent basis. We almost always purchase second hand for me and my kids. We do but new for my husband but he literally will wear it out to nothing. Then he cuts the scraps up and uses them in the shop for rags. Also we try to keep a good stock of food in the house roughly a years worth that we constantly rotate and we have room for it and have purchased or grown our own things at a reasonable price. So I don’t feel bad about that. We are farmers so we farm 1200- 2000 acres every year of wheat and beans. Plus s good sized garden and raise our own livestock for meat. We live off our farm check plus my very small part time job. We have to be frugal.

Like Lydia senn says... Pay yourself first then look at everything else. I dont do this, always puting others first, but I've come to learn it should not be the case. Lydia is so right. Ethical clothing is such a hard one with kids! I also feel like I’ve had my eyes opened to this very recently and now try hard to consciously purchase especially for myself and my husband who aren’t growing out of clothes so quickly. Sometimes you just have to take baby steps, starting somewhere to make the overall picture better - it might not be possible to ethically shop for all your kids, but the random thrifted item here and there is something I’ve started doing to help in the right direction, and just not buying as much period. Great video!! Thanks for the thought provoking content.

    Mom of soon to be 8 here, the last couple weeks of morning sickness, I've started doing laundry by room instead of putting it all together and sorting it. Usually I can do a light & dark batch for each room. Then I do different days for each room, instead of doing 1 laundry day (which I've been doing my whole life)

      Yeah- we did his financial plan early on in our marriage- unfortunately, there are some areas we just don’t agree with him, I mean, he would lose his mind if he heard how we funded our adoptions and drained savings when we felt God asking us to 😂 but I do love that he’s helping people see the value of getting out of debt and not living outside their means! Now with social media, the keeping up with the Jones’ mentality is very hard combat!

      Angela Braniff Honestly, I don’t know if he would. No different than getting in debt to fund a high risk pregnancy really!
      I agree TOTALLY on the social media... 6 years ago we deleted ALL social media. This is literally the only form we use and we don’t have any “friends” on here. I’m an enneagram 1 🤣 explains it all. Lol

    First of all, you look amazing with every hair color! We only have 2 kids but our splurges are very similar. We value experiences over almost everything else. It’s one of the reasons both of us work full time, for us having quality over quantity with our time feels right and allows us to have these experiences that we feel are invaluable. And I totally get the books thing. Growing up we were very fortunate, but my parents weren’t shoppers in general so we never got toys or clothes “just because” but they are avid readers so every Saturday morning, we’d drive to Borders and my sister and I got to share a giant cookie and a Mystic (😂 this is dating me) and we would fill up our little basket with books we wanted and they never said no! It was so exciting and to this day I love reading. I’m definitely continuing this with my kids. My 2 year old is already book obsessed, my 10 month old doesn’t really care yet but I’m sure she will! I’d love to learn more about ethical companies for adults and kids!

    If you homeschool - it is helpful to view things like cleaning help or lawn care, etc. as homeschool Tuition. You can't do it all. I know it doesn't mean we can always afford it (I know I can't right now) but My point is if you get help, especially when you homeschool, is no different than paying private school tuition..

    Love love love this video! I for sure heard your heart throughout. I’m the same way about giving. I love to give because I have been on the receiving end in different ways. The Lord has always provided. It wasn’t preachy in any form. God placed this on your heart to share & I’m loving the message! I agree with everything you said. ❤️ keep it up Mama!

    I’m so glad you talk about ethical products and clothing! Is this something you are able to do with the kids as well? I feel like it would be hard to justify the expense for something that will be worn for such a short period of time!

    • @angela.braniff
      @angela.braniff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Totally! I’m working on the best way to do this with kids. The obvious choice is to buy second hand, but there are times that isn’t possible. I can justify spending more on a shirt for me that i will wear for years! But to spend 50-60 on kids stuff that they dm grow out of and destroy doesn’t work for our budget and family size. I’ll keep y’all updated as I navigate this!

    Angela, thank you so much for mentioning consciousness when it comes to fashion. Like you said, if something is going for very cheap, something isn't right. Either the quality isn't there or someone is being treated badly. I read Fashionopolis by Dana Thomas last year and she writes about fast fashion and how bad it is for the environment and for people working in sweatshops, so it's great that you're being more conscious when buying clothes (and other items, I'm sure).

    I'm with you on many things: I do NOT hesitate to spend money on books, candles, beauty products. I splurge on other things, but HAVE NO ISSUE spending on those things. I work hard, I let myself buy those things. PS- I LOVE DRC (Congo) I spent 10 weeks there last year working in an Ebola Treatment Center. Beautiful place, beautiful people.
