Hi Trang - I'm so glad there is English version recipe of this wonderful cake. I love this cake and I need to find where I can buy the coconut flavoring. Thank you so much!
Almost every single Vietnamese store in NYC sells these. I've been wondering for 20 years how this is made... lol. Wow it's quite labor intensive. When I get my new kitchen I'm going to get a nice big steamer and I'll give this a try. Yours look so professional Trang. I think it will take me a few tries to get it out of the pan so perfectly like that. Cheers !!
+Mal Milligan Hi, these cakes are very popular Vietnamese treats. Yes, they are labor intensive but really worth the effort. A good steamer is nice to have but, for years, I did all of my steaming in a large wok and it worked just fine. Hope you get settled in your new kitchen soon! :)
Hi Trang, Love the way you make food, very clean, neat and tasty. Will make this cake on the weekend. I live in Colorado, not a lot of Vietnamese food/desert selling here. Thanks for all your clips. Hope you well. :))
Hi Jade, I've visited Colorado many times and love it there, but you're right, not many offerings for Vietnamese food. Hopefully the grocery stores have all the ingredients so you can make the yummy dishes you crave. Thank you for your support of my channel! 🥰
LOVE IT! This is like my all time favorite snack when I was little. After going through so many recipe of banh da lon, this one is the best simply because the mung bean layer actually hold its shape and not break apart. Whenever I eat this snack, I like to peel off one layer as a time and having the mung bean to hold it shape meant I am not making a mess on the couch. Thank you for the recipe chi Trang! If you don't mind, would you also please do a video on banh day dau?
+queenofpho Lol! You like to play your food :) I am glad you like the recipe! I will add your request for Banh Day Dau to the list of upcoming videos. Thanks for watching.
Wow! I wish I had a steamer. I always like watching your videos even if I know I don't have any of the ingredients/tools necessary to make the recipe. I might have to jerry-rig my own steamer tomorrow to give this cake a shot. :) Keep making great videos!
+bananafishu des Hi if you have a wok or a larger pot you could convert it into a steamer easily. I finally made this after getting all of the ingredients, and boy, do I love it. It's chewy and not too sweet, but still has a lot of flavour. The steaming was tedious, but it was very worth it. Thanks for posting this recipe!! :D
Thank you for the share! I like to learn how to make things my boyfriend grew up eating, so far it looks good, the layers are taking longer than in the video, maybe my low heat is too low. I can't wait to taste it.
Hi Laura, I hope this recipe turned out well and you and your boyfriend love it! The steaming time can vary but it's better to steam on Low heat then too high which can cause ugly bubbles all over the cake. I'd love to see a pic.
Yum! I could eat this by the truckload if I could I remember my mum and dad always buying it for me as a child. Looking forward to making this! I would like to know though if I use the mini muffin pans how would the times be different? Or will the be the same
I loved these cakes as a child too. For the mini muffin pans, I make just 3 layers using 1 tsp green batter and 1 1/2 tsp yellow batter. The steam times are: Layer 1 Green - 2 minutes, Layer 2 Yellow - 3 minutes, Layer 3 Green - 5 minutes. Good Luck and let me know how the cakes turn out for you!

Looks delicious but a bit time consuming for me. I tried one of your slow cooker Vietnamese meat balls recipe. It was great. Next mission is the slow cooker chicken curry. Thank you for sharing your recipes Trang.
Hi Howard, yes, although easy, this cake is time-consuming to make. I am glad to hear you enjoyed my slow-cooker Vietnamese meatballs. I think I know which recipes you prefer. 😉
I am sure the other one will be just as good. I love the idea of minimal preparation, come home after a busy day to a delicious healthy meal. Thanks again.
If you can find Pandan flavor or essence that would work too. It's not a thick but would add the lovely aroma. You can add green food coloring to brighten up the color. Enjoy!
Yellow layer has water listed in the ingredients, but you didn’t add it while making it in the video. Learned that the hard way after following the recipe and having to discard it because it was too watery.
I know a lot of people love this, but I'm eh about it. But you do make it look easy. I love the Halloween ones at the end, but I wonder if it would be bland without pandan or some other flavor to enhance it?
+Doodah Gurl Hi DG, I made the Halloween version of these cakes much sweeter because the kids love sugar. You can certainly add different extracts (like orange, coconut, or fruit punch ) to enhance the flavor or aroma. There are lots of options! :)
Thank you so very much. Are they traditional Cambodian desserts? Also, how long will they last for after steaming? I mean by staying fresh - not how quickly will they be eaten! :)
The cake is best if enjoyed the day it is made but you can store at room temperature for 1-2 days. In my house, they don't last very long so I never have to worry about storing it...lol! Good Luck with the recipe!
Hi there. I love how detailed this video is! I’m looking forward to trying this out for the first time. I’ve seen some recipes use coconut milk in the green mixture and I noticed yours doesn’t. Is it just personal preference?
Hello Trang! Hope you and your family are doing well. Have been missing your videos. I know you stated it is your personal preference to not use coconut milk in your green layer. However, if we wanted to add it would it replace some or all of the two cups of water? Or do you not recommend it because it will be too sweet? Please let me know. Thanks.
Do you have to consistently open the lid half way for EACH layer? I noticed you showed it for the first two layers, but wasn’t sure if it needs to be opened for every single layer??
+Xiaoyuan Xian Hi, buy pandan paste at your Asian grocer. If you live in the US, purchase online from Amazon. (Let me know if you need the link.) Fresh pandan leaves work great in this recipe: Add 1 cup water + 1 oz pandan leaves and puree in a blender. Strain and use the juice to make the green layer. Good Luck!
+Sephora Ammity If they are green mung beans, then yes, they are the same. The green mung beans have the shell on while the mung beans used in this recipe are shelled, showing the yellow bean underneath. Hope that helps.
Do you know why some recipe call for glutinous flour+tapioca, while others exclude glutinous and only has either tapioca with all purpose or just all tapioca? How does the cake taste and texture like with these differences?
What's the difference between glutinous rice flour and just regular rice flour? I bought the glutinous kind today because I didn't see any regular rice flour at my Asian market. Will the recipe still work?
Glutinous rice flour has a really gluey and sticky consistency compared to rice flour. If you can't find rice flour, just omit it but don't use glutinous rice flour as a substitute as the cake will be too sticky. I hope that helps.

oh noooo I followed but but for some reason the mung bean came out to only 25 ounces after I blended it. Im in the middle of making them now should I add water?
Hi, glutinous rice flour is made from sweet rice and rice flour from regular rice. The texture is completely different with the glutinous rice flour being much stickier. You do not want to substitute these flours in this recipe. Good Luck!
I tried this recipe. My yellow batter came out so liquidy because I followed the written recipe. However, I noticed that you did not add water to the mung bean before you blended it. Do I need that 1 3/4 cup of water for the yellow recipe?
The 1 3/4 cup water is used to cook the mung bean. That's all the water that is needed to make the yellow batter. You do not need to add more water when mixing with the other ingredients to make the yellow batter. Hope that helps.
Hi em, if you don't have an American measuring cup you can use any cup or bowl for all the measurements. Just use the same proportions as I have listed in the recipe and it should be just fine. Good Luck!
Super cute holiday twists!!! Thank you for sharing. I’m going to try this!!!

Hi, I want to try this recipe soon. Can you use pandan extract in place of the paste?

Do you have to consistently open the lid half way for EACH layer? I noticed you showed it for the first two layers, but wasn’t sure if it needs to be opened for every single layer??

Hi, are pandan products necessary for this dessert? Would it be ok if I omitted it?
The Pandan flavor and aroma is what makes this cake unique.
Hi, I don't have the panda paste. Can I make the green layer wiithout it??
Sure, it won't have the pandan aroma but the cake will still be delicious. Enjoy!
Can I use sweet purple yam instead of mung beans? Will the recipe the same as far as the measurements of flour? Thx

Are mung beans the same as green beans? They only sell green beans in my local supermarket, and they look exactly the same as mung beans
+Sephora Ammity If they are green mung beans, then yes, they are the same. The green mung beans have the shell on while the mung beans used in this recipe are shelled, showing the yellow bean underneath. Hope that helps.

can i use corn starch instead of the tapioca starch?
+Anna 124119 For this cake, please use tapioca starch. Corn starch will not yield the right taste or texture.
I tried to make it today. The mung beans were pretty hard to find here in Denmark, but I managed to get some eventually at a local vietnamese shop.
The only problem I had was that some condensation gathered on top of each layer after the assigned incubation time. Maybe I steamed at too high intensity (I only have a very primitive setup compared to the one in the video).
thanks chi
Can I substitute coconut milk with whole milk?
Yes, use a little bit less whole milk as coconut milk is thicker. Enjoy!
they do sell lite coconut milk at sprout or wholefood since it easy to digest than regular coconut.
Awesome, the lite coconut milk will be great!
Water wasn’t added to the yellow layer , why ? U had listed the ingredients
woo it's look so good
Thanks Julia! Hope you give the recipe a try. 😃
If I am making them in a small muffin tin, would the steam time still be that long for each layer?
+bubblekathy888 Hi Kathy, the steam times will be shorter. For the mini muffin pans, I make just 3 layers. Use 1 tsp of green batter and 1 1/2 tsp of yellow batter. The steam times are: Layer 1 Green - 2 minutes, Layer 2 Yellow - 3 minutes, Layer 3 Green - 5 minutes. Good Luck with the recipe!
hi, i was wondering if we need regular rice flour or glutinous rice flour?

+RunAwayRice okay thank you!

Hi Zindy, you only need 18 oz of mung bean, 9 oz for each layer.
