    This was the scene that convinced people that Sean Astin should have been nominated for best supporting actor. His performance all around is the heart of the film.

      You're almost right...Samwise is the heart of the story. Go back, read the books. While Gandalf is wise, Aragorn is noble, Frodo for sure is a hero, all the various characters with all their various charms - but from beginning to end, Samwise is the constant friend. The only one with no ambition but to help Frodo, but to see things through so that they can return to, or if nothing else, to preserve all the things he loves - friendship, family, simple things - The movies did a great, an absolutely fantastic job, of giving the audience the sense that at their heart, hobbits don't need wealth or treasure or tech or power, they just want to enjoy the simplest things of life - and Samwise carries that, unwaveringly, through the entirety of the story - and the movie does a fantastic job of translating that, and yes, Sean Astin did an extraordinary job of bringing that to life on film - but you can't understate the importance of the original literary model for the character and the concepts.

      @@kermitbohlen8401 do you think he should have been nominated for Best supporting actor?
      Those that did receive nominated that year were Tim Robbins for Mystic River (which he won) Ken Watanabe for The Last Samurai, Alec Baldwin for The Cooler, Benicio Del Toro for 21 Grams, and Djimon Hounsou for In America. I've seen Robbins, Watanabe, and Del Toros performances and all were excellent and deserving. The other two i haven't but I would gladly swap Baldwin for Astin to secure the nomination.

      @@Story2ScreenMovieReviewPodcast of course I do. I get your point. But on the other hand, not sure I care all that much if he did or not. Don't get me wrong, I love Sean Astin as an actor and career. But I don't care much for Hollywood awards. Hollywood has a pretty consistent habit of failing to recognize the people I think do some of the greatest writing, acting, cinematography, music, etc, etc, in film over the course of my lifetime - failing to be recognized by Hollywood is less important to me than "did they show up on set, give their all to the part they were handed, and did they get paid for their time and effort"?.
      To this day, can you believe that Sigourney Weaver doesn't have an Oscar? The Academy can suck it as far as I'm concerned.

      @@Story2ScreenMovieReviewPodcastSean Astin acted very well in all three movies. Just as they honored the last movie by awarding it in all the categories in which it was nominated, they should have given a special nomination to Sean Astin. I think he had a better performance than Robbins, who won the award that year.

    There is something profound about the statement: "I can't carry it for you...but I CAN carry you!"
    The profundity of the statement is that we can have people who we love and care about go through some horrible things (illness or some terrible loss) which we've never experience. We can't empathize with this burden they carry. Its up to us to do our best to carry them even though we can't carry those burdens.

    I feel like Frodo is often overlooked in this scene and both in the books and movie. He literally is suffering so much that he can't even remember what things taste like, but still he goes on. He's an amazing hero that's super overlooked.

    Everyone watching this scene: "Sam is such a good friend."
    Tolkien: "... And then the servant, knowing his proper place in life, abandons his hopes for home and hearth. As is his duty, he begins to carry his master. Being a proper servant, he, of course, will gladly toss his life away, but he hopes that his master will survive."

    • @Despotic_Waffle
      @Despotic_Waffle 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +17

      There's poetry in that too. Even though it's weird and uncanny to our modern sensibilities, if you boil it down it's the same core element that drives everyone; duty. If you take the story of the hobbits as an allegory to war trauma, then you start you piece it together.

    • @Dragonblade722
      @Dragonblade722 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +14

      @@Despotic_Waffle Well said. Make no mistake, Frodo and Sam are friends and have a great amount of care for each other. However, in addition to that they do have are parallel relationship as master and servant that adds a level of dedication and responsibility for Sam. It's the reason why Sam refers to Frodo as Mr. Frodo despite their closeness as that is the proper and respectful way for Sam to refer to Frodo. This is hard to translate to a modern audience (which is why it's not brought up in the movies) as the master/servant relationship is often painted with a negative, abusive perspective as opposed to one of dedication, and service to another.

      @TheNotoriusDumbass
      Sam didn't say this in the book.
      You are lying for no good reason.
      Here is the actual quote:
      Sam looked at him and wept in his heart, but no tears came to his dry and stinging eyes. ‘I said I’d carry him, if it broke my back,’ he muttered, ‘and I will!’
      ‘Come, Mr. Frodo!’ he cried. ‘I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you and it as
      well. So up you get! Come on, Mr. Frodo dear! Sam will give you a ride. Just tell him where to go, and he’ll go.’
      As Frodo clung upon his back, arms loosely about his neck, legs clasped firmly
      under his arms, Sam staggered to his feet; and then to his amazement he felt the
      burden light. He had feared that he would have barely strength to lift his master alone, and beyond that he had expected to share in the dreadful dragging weight of the accursed Ring. But it was not so. Whether because Frodo was so worn by his long pains, wound of knife, and venomous sting, and sorrow, fear, and homeless wandering, or because some gift of final strength was given to him, Sam lifted Frodo with no more difficulty than if he were carrying a hobbit-child pig-a-back in some romp on the lawns or hayfields of the Shire. He took a deep breath and started off.

    • @MrTrueCaller619

      It's the same thing . Can't a servant be the master's best Friend?

    • @TheNotoriousCheeto
      @TheNotoriousCheeto 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MrTrueCaller619 Maybe. But friendship is usually between equals. Tolkien wrote Sam as wholly subservient. You might like your boss at your job, and even be friendly. But if he told that same boss said to drop everything and come with him on an arduous trip, during which we would carry most of the supplies, and are expected to die if it means keeping him safe, I kind if doubt most people would agree. But in Tolkien's view of the world, we should not only be happy to do that but should refuse all offers to go home and encourage our boss even if it means our doom.

    I hope the reviewers watched the extended versions. I followed the production of the trilogy with the director and crew's production behind the scenes blog so I was so excited for this movie and saw the original theatric releases.
    Last year there was a 20th anniversary theatric release marathon of the extended versions. They had all 3 back to back in one day but that would have been overwhelming. Fortunately they also had each part spread over 3 days which I went and saw. There was so much context included that made the trilogy so much better. I think the extended version had the equivalent extra content of a whole additional movie (at least 3 x 30mins = 90 mins). So many little additions that filled out the plot and characters to mention. That was a long week with watching the 12 hours over 3 days in a theater. It was awesome!
