Lovely! The red, on the inside, reminds me of satin, with its lustre, and depth of colour. That "flame" of chatoyance is a special treat! Keep up the good work!

Wonderful piece. Glad the red color stayed! Glad you took the bark off. The turning of the inside looks to be a difficult technique. I agree the shape is nice. Nice video👍

I'm behind watching Juniper. We call it in the south Eastern Red Cedar, which is really beautiful wood. It's strange, though. It's hard and soft at the same time 😅. That turned out stunningly beautiful, Gary.

Thank you Madonna! It sure does have a tendency to not stay together. A number of years ago I turned a cut off from one of these. I did it as an engrain turning and with was small and thin. Had it hanging on the wall in the hall way. I bumped it and it hit the floor. Now it is in 3 pieces. Probably will not fix it.
But when it stays together it is very cool looking.

@@ThePapa1947Yes, the light direction and quality is the key. By quality I mean of the light, in that the sunlight or a narrow beam flashlight will show it more than right next to a table lamp, a north facing window, or 4' fluorescent shop lights. The less direct, the better, as well for chatoyancy. A camera flash would be a small direct light, small being good, direct being less ideal. A small work light from a 60 degree angle would flash beautifully. I don't need to tell you about lighting, yours is solid. :)

Nice piece. I have turned a few bowls and vases from red cedar. I actually like the smell it produces. Like you my sense of smell had diminished over the years. I cannot smell white cedar at all unless it is wet. Keep up the fun.

Thank you Chris. Some of the cedars are not so bad but this juniper was very strong.
Back in 2006 something got messed up in my sense of smell and I could not tell gasoline from water.
Has slow come back but some things irritate, more than being able to smell them for what they are.
Doctors had no real clue but thought it could have been some infection.

You didn’t disappoint me Gary, another great turning.
I’ve turned juniper before and unfortunately the beautiful pink colour always turns a light brown. I’ve never had the reddish tinge stay, but the variation in colour is still great.
I usually turn these pieces the other way, not natural edge , however this turned out just fine.
The shellac finish looks great. I use shellac sanding sealer but always a wax and natural oil (walnut coconut Tung) finish. I make my own and put a little diatomaceous earth in for a fine finish. All natural and food safe although you probably shouldn’t be using juniper bowls for food.
I love the smell of juniper and don’t find that it affects me, sorry to hear you say that you use a ask.
I hope your throat is now better as I would be greatly disappointed if you couldn’t make videos regularly.
    Hope your thanksgiving was pleasant

    Bye from down under. Gregory

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you Greg. I just checked and the one I did in March 2021 is still as red as when I finished it.
I do not keep in around sunlight if that makes any difference. Also I wonder about what finish is used if that matters.
I like to turn them non natural edge as well. But so many times you end up cutting away so much heart wood there is none left. This may have been the case with this one.
Hardly anything I turn is meant to be used with food. And if I give one away I tell the please do not put any food you need a fork to eat it with. Candy is fine.
My throat was fine as soon as I finished this piece.

      Gary

Juniper, oh, Juniper. Haha. Where I live in Central Texas there is one dominant species of Juniper east of me and one dominant species west of me. They mix in my area so I know it well. It can make you mad or glad. Haha. I like it for so many reasons and mostly just accept it for it's nature. What you made is beautiful and useful in my opinion. Yep, the oil, aroma and dust can just be too much sometimes. Some folks HATE the pollen. Haha. Fortunately for me, the pollen does not bother me. I made a bookmark from a thin piece of cedar ( Juniperus ashei), 1/16 " thick, that is still flat and straight after using it for years. Sanding it made me sneeze. Haha.
