Thank you to all my subscribers and viewers! I truly appreciate you all. I can't believe we already surpassed 26,000 subscribers! Thank you!
This is my 21th filmed project, and it was also my first time turning Texas Ebony. This log had been laughing at me for several months before I decided to tackle it. It was bone dry and measured about 6x6x12 and probably weighed about 20 lbs. I was not mentally prepared for the fight this thing would require, and I spent probably more than 6 hours on the hollowing alone. I had to stop frequently to get my bearings, let the carbides cool down, and check that my lathe was still in one piece. It was quite the test of mental fortitude. I hope the process seems more relaxing in the video. It was certainly a difficult project. I also had one finial attempt fail because I turned the burl too thin, and neither CA glue nor epoxy would hold it together. Those of you who follow me on Instagram (@adamsen_woodcraft) will hopefully see some bloopers in an upcoming post.
Cheers to all and have a blessed day!

I think your level of talent with woodturning tools, and attention to detail has always been of an extremely high standard which captured my attention and inspired me to learn.
However and since you started your woodturning journey I have lost my initial enthusiasm and motivation to watch your videos because of the higher importance you are now placing on being commercially successful.
All the laid back music and your skill with turning and capturing the video shots have lost their original magic for me David, and its becoming kinda plastic - that may well be how it is in this world we live in. Just being honest from my point of view.
Hi Peter, thank you for your honesty. I think I understand a little of what you're saying, and for the most part you're right... to an extent. Right now, my time is split between this woodturning passion/hobby and a very demanding and stressful full time job. If I am ever able to make woodturning/TH-cam my full time business, I need to learn consistency. However, those two things do not come without sacrifice.
One example of this was making the decision to remove music from the bulk of each video, focusing on the ASMR aspect instead. Music has always been one of the more controversial aspects of my older videos--some people love it, and some people hate it. About a year ago, I ran a TH-cam poll and found that the majority of responders actually like the music but could go without it, and an equal number of people on both extremes would either want more music or no music at all. In contrast, for every comment praising song choices there would be 3 or 4 comments criticizing them, and that is ultimately why I switched to an ASMR focus--to make my videos hopefully more palatable/less controversial to a wider audience. This decision also helped to improve my consistency on TH-cam, freeing me from the constant struggle of finding decent music that isn't, as one viewer once described, "kitch". As the saying goes, the medium is the message. I would rather have no music than cheapen the video with bad music. I am also a big fan of ASMR-style woodworking in general, mainly because that type of content is generally simple and free of distraction. In the end, I am simply trying to remain flexible to the platform, making changes that are needed to set myself up for success in an extremely competitive market.
I hope that helps clarify a bit. If you'd like to reach out to me personally, email me at david@adamsenwoodcraft.com.
Hi David,
I tried copying and pasting your email to reply to you personally but something never worked.
So I can only respond to you here for now.
All I can say in response to you is that YOU and YOUR skills was what inspired and motivated me to try and become become a woodturner. Not the music (although I found that pleasing), but just the pure mastery and skill you have in bringing the pieces you create to life.
That is what inspired me because your talent speaks for itself and in my mind is beyond the need for polls and the opinions of us lesser skilled and gifted as a result.
So from my point of view, TH-cam etc need you and what you are naturally inclined to create, not the other way round.
My best wishes to you
I hope you didn't quit! There are gobs of great turning instructors on TH-cam. I've been turning for years and still keep up with many of them. It is rare that I don't learn something. At the very least I am reminded of a technique that I could probably use more often. Cheers!
I like the music and the production value..its relaxing from my stressful demanding full time job.
Wellllll EXCUSE ME for doing what I like and making living while at it ‼
Is what I'd tell you Peter if I was David. Don't get on your high horse and think
you are the only one who appreciate and understand high art.
No matter what you think of him I think David is one hell of a gifted craftsman
and his art work should be shared by people at large.
I am a new 81 year old fan…after reading Peters comments and your very respectful reply, I am even more of a fan. I know nothing about woodworking but I do admire skill and the dance and movement of wood working is fascinating and calming. The strength of your hands and vision is just mesmerizing and by the way. I hardly listen to the music but I listen to the machines…..adding the music is kin to massage music..lovely ..thank you for your hard work and talent.
Thank you so much! You’re very kind!
@@lenelldevereux2284 , I’m with you on this. Music fades into the background. I’m all about the process. Nice thing about woodwork like this is that there is a lot of artistic expression, unlike rebuilding internal combustion engines or trying to follow the logic behind mathematical conjectures or fluid mechanics simulations. Just saying that I agree with you on it being calming and fascinating. The dexterity and soft hands are both equally impressive - if you were a rugby player you’d make a good inside center or full back!
I have a 200 year old ebony cabinet. Comes down from my family. Its considered an aristocratic possession in my country (sri lanka) to have furniture made of ebony wood. I love your videos. So calming and satisfying ❤️
Wow that sounds like a gorgeous piece. And thanks!
The 200k subscriber is way less than you deserve David. Thank you for letting us watch the birth of these pieces of art.
As a "Padawan Turner" who can't get enough of these video's: what stands out most to me are those channels put out by "tech" turners who really do turn out impressively complex pieces (and some that don't), compared to artists who see the lathe as a canvas and turn out works of inspired art. David Adamsen is one of those artists, and his works never fail to inspire me.
Thank you! I appreciate that.
@@DavidAdamsen Bro, you are head and shoulders above the rest.
I had never heard of Texas Ebony but I think I’m in love. Beautiful work.
Thank you Sam!
I know zero about woodturning. I’ve come to these videos drawn by the magic of seeing something magnificent emerging from what some people would consider a piece of firewood. Having been drawn in by that magic I now realise that the real magic, and skill, is in seeing the finished piece in the raw log, understanding what the structure of the timber is and what can be done with it, which bits to remove and which to keep, what shape to create, where to cut and where not to. And then there’s the skill involved in knowing how to do all of the above with a precision that I can only wonder at. You, sir, are a true artist and I now see why your videos have millions of views. Oh yes, and I’ve just subscribed.
David, your art is so PHENOMENAL!!!! I like to watch you work before I have to go to work so I can feel relaxed before a 10 hour day. Thank you for posting Sir!!! 👊🏾👍🏾💪🏾
Cheers, Will! I appreciate that!
He is truly an artist.....the level of creativity and craftsmanship involved just amazes me. When I was watching him make the wedding gift.. I paused the video and subscribed. I HAD to. I could watch this man work all day. I LOVE artistic expression...and I love seeing how it's done. This is my kinda therapy... Omg. 💎💎💎💎💎👍🏿
I am not in wood turning, am just a person in total admiration for artists who, like you, bring out beauty from a piece of material which, for me is just a piece of wood. I love everything of your videos, the great scenery of your home place, Maine, the filming, the music and the exiting disovery of where you are taking us to reveal a master piece. Superb piece of art. Magnifique!
Thanks so much, Vivian!
Who needs resin when the colours of nature are as splendid as these? Texas Ebony, what a beauty!
Incredible Artistry! Thank you for sharing your beautiful work David. Videos are so well done!
Thank you, Rich!
The contrast in gain is tremendous. Very beautiful David.
Yet again, another piece where I had no idea where you were going with it until you showed the final product. Very nice.
Thanks Mitch! Cheers!
Wow. What a gorgeous piece. I did some research and Texas Ebony has a hardness over 2800! Almost twice that of Maple. Great job! ❤❤🎵🎵
Thanks! Yes it is super hard, probably the most difficult wood I had ever worked with at the time.
That's incredible. What a beautiful piece of wood. I'm sure Our Maker is smiling down at the elegance you finessed from one of his creations
Thank you so much, Tommy! There is so much beauty for us to discover in God’s creation. 👍👊✌️
I've never did woodturning... but it's real amazing to see your talent, your art and your stunning ideas... totaly breathtaking!!!
And the closing results... oh, Lord... faboules... only breathtaking!!!
Oh, my goodness!!!
Never sean so nice and heartwarming woodworks....
Thank you very much!
Absolutely stunning! Texas Ebony is extremely hard, so I’m very impressed that you made this process look so simple. The gorgeous piece of art was well worth it, I’m sure. 😍
Imagine Gaboon ebony being even harder and darker 💯🖤

Again . . . brilliant design with a high-quality result. It was a pleasure to watch.
Thank you so much, Ward!
After reading all the comments, there's nothing i can add other than thank you for getting my mind off of these crazy, scary days. It's a pleasure to watch you work.👍😎
Thanks Richard! I appreciate you!
I just started watching you, and I am thoroughly enjoying your creativity, talent, and the unusual pieces you create. Thank you for the peaceful music and the satisfying work you do ❤❤😊
Thank you for the kind words. I appreciate it!
Wow, that finial is a crowning touch. Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you!
I didn't realise what a beautiful wood Texas Ebony was and your turning certainly did it justice. Please keep up the good work so that we can continue to enjoy it vicariously through you.
Thanks so much!
30+ years ago, my old man had to trim an Ebano branch that was growing over the roof. He had no chainsaw at the time. It was an all day affair. It was actually two ebony trees that grew Siamese style. Greetings from South Texas.
I believe that Texas Ebony is one of the prettiest pieces of wood I have ever seen! Great job!
David, what a talented young man you are! Beautiful piece of art, my favourite so far. Your videos from start to finish are brilliant. Maine looks absolutely gorgeous. Keep up the fantastic work! Love from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks so much Sue! I appreciate you! 👊✌️😊
I don't know about everyone else, but I find master turners to be hypnotic when at work!
I love your job! Amazing pieces!
Its a balm watching you work under a very good taste of music.
Thank you so much for sharing with us!
I never saw such a quality: Phantasy, working, result. My compliments. Never stop doing that.
You do draw the viewer in with your work. Amazing to watch. Awe-inspiring results, thank you for sharing
Thank you so much! I appreciate you!
Just a couple minutes in and I was like, oh my that is beautiful wood. Then to see the whole project come together. What a stunning piece.
Wow David its absolutely gorgeous! I love the colours in it. You make amazing things. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much, Amy!
Дерево очаровывает своей глубиной красоты. А если из него эту красоту извлекает одарённый человек, такой как Вы, то это вдвойне завораживает. Очень красиво, с уважением !
David.... very very cool. Really like the Texas ebony and you did it justice with using simple easy flowing shape in your design, and the red mallee burl was a great thought to use for top. It brought that little extra detail , contrast, and pop!....to the whole piece. Draws your eye to it. Job well done David. Really awesome!👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much, John! I appreciate that! It was probably the most difficult project I’ve done so far. The hollowing process was slow and brutal and I felt like I was losing my eye for shaping just because I was getting worn out. Doesn’t seem so difficult now that it’s over lol. 😂✌️🍻
😮❤❤ I could sit here all night long watching your videos. This one is awesome. That’s the only word I can think of other than beautiful. I don’t know how you think of these creations. It’s truly a gift and you wear it well thank you so much for sharing your gift with the world.😊
Thanks again very much!
Beautiful work! It makes me want to go out and buy a lathe every time I watch these.
David, thank you for another excellent video. I continue to be impressed with your art. The added bonus that you can present the process in a way that is relaxing and compelling is a wonderful gift. ❤😊
I think some people are just so talented to be able to bring out the beauty in wood like you just did. Enjoyed it.
Thanks Mary!
Texas Ebony is amazing! I enjoyed watching you and yes it is "ART". I found your site bright and early this morning. I am glad I did. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
Thank you, Irma!
Absolutely beautiful. That Texas Ebony didnt beat you. I love it.
Thank you Bonnie!
David: I am thoroughly amazed by your creative and ingenious videos. I am especially intrigued by your one-of-a-kind creations: the choice(s) of woods; your 'combination' of woods in a single project; and, your studio and/or museum quality final products. In other videos, I have commented on how I can't stop staring at your work. The same is true here. Your work is brilliant!
Thank you so much!
There are turners out there in the world who are very good. There are camerapersons who are very good. And video editors who know their stuff. You are able to do all those things, and do them amazingly well. Im so impressed with every video of yours that i watch. Your turning skills are enviable. Your camera and editing work is no less than professional. The woods you work with are gorgeous. The finished pieces......stunning. your hard work, and attention to detail definitely shows.
Wow thank you so much, Dave! I’ve been into photography since I was a kid and got inspired to turn by watching fellow woodturners on TH-cam. The details are all part of the fun! Cheers!
I love watching you work at the lathe, and the music complements your artful movements as you dance with the wood. It’s like watching a particularly fine ballet. And the result is so amazing! I look forward to watching more of your videos and trying to learn as much as possible from your turning mastery.
Wow thanks so much, Gregory! I try to learn something new in every project! ✌️
This is my favorite piece of all! Beautifully "arted", David--it was worth the fight. Glad you did not give up when it was so hard. Well done!!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate you! This was a fun but very difficult one. I’m going to have a hard time letting it go. ✌️👌☺️
Thank you for another amazing video. Look forward to watching and listening to the next video.
Thank you Todd! I appreciate you watching!

Like someone else said, I have run out of words to express how wonderful your work is. This one is far out beautiful. It is a work of art for display on a sofa table or mantle, but it is functional to stash something. Someone might hide candy. I'd use it for keeping guitar picks.
Thanks so much John!
Definitely art!! I have never heard of Texas Ebony before, David. If it was a lot of work it certainly looks like it was worth it. I love the finial. 👍👍👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦😃😃😃
Happy turning,
.....Gord
Thank you so much, Gord! There were several points during the hollowing process where I almost gave up. My live center had rusted in the tail stock and I had never successfully removed it until I was at the end of my rope with this project. I’m thankful I was able to use the forstner bits, they broke through a weird knotty spot that the carbides where barely scratching. Cheers! Same to you!
WOW! A tailstock that couldn’t be used for anything but your live center! I can only imagine how difficult that would be. I’m glad you were able to sort it out, David!
This is beautiful. Will it art? Of course it will art in your hands David! So beautiful and love the music. Cheers
Thank you so much, Crystal!
David I have learned to just sit back and watch , you are amazing and your pieces always comes out beautiful. 👍
Thank you so much Ken!
Idk why but I imagine this guy listening to hard rock or something while turning wood then putting these calming instrumentals on the videos
Great choice of music for such a gorgeous piece. Once again you have proven you are a master at wood turning. My wife has purchased several of your pieces and we look forward to seeing more of your work. Bravo!
Thank you so much, Steve! I really appreciate that! I’m so glad you enjoy them!!! 👍
Wow! What a masterpiece! God gave u a great gift! Keep up the great work!
Thank you, Wayne!
First and foremost I consider every piece you turn to be beautiful.
This particular piece stands out to me a lot and is a cut above some of your other pieces.
I love that you allowed the natural imperfections to stand out. This allowed this piece to be more natural looking and a more rustic look.
Thank you so much! I appreciate that!
I run out of adjectives to describe your works of art. All your other viewers have used them all anyway! This is most likely my favorite piece you have done. I guess I’ll just say stunning. Thank you once again for sharing another of your classy, soothing, calming videos. I guess I didn’t run out of adjectives after all...lol.
Thank you, Jeff! I really appreciate that. This was a really tough project, having never turned this wood before. There were many times over this 4 day process where I felt like I was losing my eye for shapes simply because I was so worried about being able to complete the hollowing process properly. I’m really glad you like it! 👊🍻✌️
You haven’t lost a thing!
WOW 🤩...What a BEAUTIFUL piece of ART.... love all the different colors and variations of the wood...Great job as always...🤗
Thank you so much, Kelli! ✌️👊
Your videos are a pleasure to watch.. Always know I'm in for a treat when a notification comes up for a new video.. But David you just do amazing turnings and your video work really are beautiful presentation of your pieces.. Just beautiful work period..
Thank you so much, Jim!
WOW, I got to get some of that Texas Ebony. What a beautiful piece. Nice job David.
Thanks Glen! 👍
WOW, that is some gorgeous timber, love what you made of it, and that finial complements the vessel really well.
Thanks so much!
David, I too agree. This is a wood turners dream. It is always good to see work like this. Well done.
Thanks Richard!
Always enjoy your work and top level video production values!
Thanks so much, Jay!
The vase is magnifiscent. Lid and especially handle... like the rest. Do dare to find your style. Your level of mastery deserves it.
David, another exceptional piece! I figured out a few things that I really like about your videos. First, you use a lot of wood species that few other turners use. Second, you have an excellent eye for proportion along with great patience for finishing. My pieces have benefited from watching your work. Thank you. From a fellow turner in New Hampshire. Be well, stay safe.
Thank you so much, Kelvin!
As usual, a great piece of Art. And the background music ... I feel like floating! Thank you for showing us your mastery.
Thanks! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely magnificent! It may have laughed at you for a time but you had the last laugh. You are an inspiration to the artist in every turner.
Thanks so much Michele!
I don't much about woodturning, but I get the impression that wood is incredibly hard.
Beautiful work.
I have watched this video two or three times now, one of my favorite pieces I have seen you turn. TH-cam algorithm dropped you into my feeds a few weeks ago and I’m glad that it did, I enjoy watching you turn and seeing the finished product. You have a true talent. I have so many questions about how you decide what to make but not enough space to type them out here!
the quality of work, lighting, shooting and installation at the highest level 👍👍👍
Thank you so much!
Man, your cinematography skills are certainly on par with your woodworking skills!! Fantastic!! I think as much work goes into the 'production' of your video, as with the 'turning'!! Either way my friend, sincere compliments!!
Thanks Larry I appreciate that!
David, this is an amazingly beautiful lidded pot. I love the burl lid top. What an awesome job! Gorgeous piece!
❤🙃
Just brilliant David. Well done
Thanks so much!
Such a beautiful work of art. Only a true and gifted artist with such craftsmanship can create something so lovely.
Excellent work, as I'll give this video a 👍🏻.
Thank you so much!
@@DavidAdamsen You're welcome ✌🏻
Brilliant execution of a stunning piece!
Thanks Kerri!
Very, very nice. I would be proud to display this piece. Good job!
David that was absolute wonderful! Yes it was very relaxing to watch and I understand the feeling you had when hollowing it out. Although you sure could not tell by watching you. It looked so smooth I wanted a chunk of that wood. I just turned a piece of Iron Wood and it was like a rock.
I like your finial with the live top it looks very cool. I made my wife a lidded box from a maple burl and the lid has the same live edge that you left.
This was a top of the line turning and video...well done!
Take care my friend,
Gary
Thank you so much, Gary! Ironwood is on my mental wishlist. But it’s so hard to find in natural edge form. Do have a video of that ironwood planned?!?! I’d love to see it! 👊✌️🍻
Hi David I do have a video coming up where I use a piece of Ironwood but it was not the main part of the video. It is a really involved process and it will not be this Friday but I could reschedule it. That is all the hinting I will do on it...LOL
I am glad I have a few ready but it is so hard to decide which one is next..
Take care,
Gary
ThePapa1947 Ooooh that sounds fantastic! I’m looking forward to it! Lucky you to be ahead of the game a little. Each week is a new project and new video. I don’t have anything in reserve 🥴😫
Yes, this is Art. A very beautiful piece of art that would like amazing in someone's home, in a museum, office building, hotel or restaurant.
Damn. I got so lost in just enjoying the music and the sound of tools that I forgot to watch the video. Beautiful work all the way around man. The wood piece and the video edit.
Thanks Matthew! Cheers!
You rock at vessels. Now I see you rock at spindles as well. That looked so smoooooooth.
This has got to be one of my favorite things made on a wood turning video for sure 🔥
Wow thanks so much!
That is a masterpiece! I would have loved to have it in my home & proudly shown it off to everyone. I bow to your talent my friend & I respect your GOD given gift.
Wow thank you so much, Nina! I appreciate you!
I failed to mention that I am also a Texan, I live in Bryan. But I've never heard of Texas Ebony, it's absolutely beautiful.
Spectacular ! That wood is gorgeous. Is a complete masterpiece. Love it!!❤️❤️👍👏🏻
Thanks Wanda!
The grain and color of that is to die for and the little burl is gorgeous, another beautiful piece
Thanks Amanda!
WOW! Very beautiful piece of art!
Thanks Alex!
I am a cellist and have a makers instrument. The tuning pegs, tailpiece and fingerboard are all ebony and are a similar colour and grain to this piece. I have a new appreciation of how hard ebony is and why it works well with my cello’s maple tuning box. This wood is incredibly hard. Many violins from around 1650 still have their original tuning pegs! This was a different mindful experience being able to clearly see the tool cutting the wood with a see through fine spray of blade dust. It was hard work for you, but enjoyable viewing for me. Thank you David.
Thank you so much Iain! 👊🍻✌️
Very beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much Mark!
I've always wanted to see Texas Ebony turn. This is so amazing
I have always wanted to see a finial done this way with a burl. Thank You for feeding my curiosity. Looks amazing.
Thank you so much, Richard!
In the hand of a master craftsman (you), it doth not only art but arts beautifully.
if youtube has a fair rules like those guys must be rewarded because they really make very good content .
👍🔥👍
Good job bro 🔥👌
David you are doing absolutely beautiful wood turning. I enjoy watching every time.
Thank you very much Russell!
Hello everyone! Thank you to all for the kind words, feedback, and encouragement. Because I received so many inquiries about purchasing this piece, I have decided to auction it on eBay: ebay.us/BPZwfR?cmpnId=5338273189

La Natura dona; la mano dell' uomo modella e trasforma la "materia" in oggetti sensazionali.
Dirty Harry Thanks! It’s a “depends” kinda question. Some woods are hard to finish well but not necessarily hard to turn (walnut, koa) but I would say that black palm and Texas Ebony are the hardest woods that I’ve turned because palm wood is so brittle and Ebony is so dense and hard.
It deserves a big price tag. Good luck with it.
That piece of wood is absolutely my favorite now! Texas Ebony, WOW!!! What a absolutely beautiful job you did! Thank you for sharing! ❤❤❤😲😲😲😲😲❤❤❤❤
Jennifer Criss Thanks Jennifer!
That is gorgeous. Love the different colors in the one piece. Looks almost like glass ❤️
That just looks hard as a rock. Impressive piece man
Thanks! It was a lot more difficult than I anticipated! ✌️
Wasn't sure where this was going, but it went in the right direction. You are very creative sir. I get many ideas from watching your vids. My thanks !!
Thanks so much!
Элегантная вещица получилась, браво! Здоровья и успехов!

Texas Ebony is so pretty. You skillfully brought out its natural beauty, David. You achieved excellent results, as always!
Just beautiful, and nice tutorial 👍
