Good video, I did want to point out one correction, 7:53 The D21 4x4 system was not a carry over, it was a new system.
The 720 had separate gearbox and transfer cases, the D21 had a paired unit with both gearbox and transfer bolted together.
I had an 84 gen-2 720 4x4 King cab in Australia in the late 80s.
Our models only went as big as the Z22 here, mine was smokey when I bought it (cheap as a result, as I was a mechanic)
I rebored it and fitted modified Z24 pistons to end up with higher compression and the bigger bore, about 2300cc.
It was a great little truck and towed my 510/1600 rally car to event, went on the beach fishing on Fraser Island and was good to drive on the highway 👌

Very good video! I agree with everything you said, except for one thing. The Kingcab was released as a 1976 model in midyear. I bought the first Kingcab in Chattanooga, TN in late June 1976. It was titled as a 1976 model and all paperwork associated with it described it as a 1976 model. When I asked when I could get a 5 speed truck, the owner of the dealership told me they would not be available until the 1977 model arrived in late November or December of 1976. More importantly, there is a minor difference in the console of a real 76 model. It is a smaller profile padded type, with no provision of space to mount a radio. Other than the vin number and production date, the only visual identifier for a real 1976 Kingcab is a 4 speed truck with that console. I traded my original 1976 for a Zcar in 1980 and regretted it almost immediately. I looked for a real 76 for 22 more years. The truck I own now is registered as a 1976 truck (with the correct console). I took the console out and sealed it up in a box immediately. I still have the truck (and the console). Please excuse the long message as I am only interested in the accurate history of these amazing trucks. For those who valuate collectible vehicles, there should be a difference in value between a 1976 Kingcab and all other models, as it is the original.

Speaking from experience, with proper maintenance, the 720 pickup will outlast anything on the road.
The 720's sold in the US were the last of the Japanese manufactured trucks, the Hardbody was manufactured in Smyrna TN at their new plant.

@@Cfchild1 these trucks are no doubt reliable, I love mine.
Halfway through 1983 some of the 720s began to be manufactured at the new Tennessee plant in the states. I was unaware that all of the hardbodies were produced in the states, thanks for sharing!

@@FastJack_ Ah, didn't realize some of the 720's were built in TN.
I checked the VIN on my 84 2wd KingCab and verified that it was built in Japan. I'm the third owner for over the last 16 years, 250K miles on the clock and still runs strong.
I really enjoyed that old ad and video footage you used to document on your video, great segments!
