My father bought a champ in 1986 and drove it for 30 years and on my 18th birthday my dad gave his champs keys to me and said there you go and I still drive his champ still. Amazing bakkie, cheap to maintain, cheap to drive and never let you down. If emission laws did not become a problem then people would probably still buy the 1400 champ😂
@MarkoVukovic0 It's pressure from the EU. But classic cars do get exempt. You just can't produce new cars that does not follow the new emission standards.
The worst thing about this video is that you have made me mourn the loss of my beloved 1400 Bakkie. Your reminded me of all the good times we had. Because of this video, I am probably going to go against my natural instinct and proper financial advice and search for one to buy. THANK YOU FOR THE AWESOME VIDEO
My first car was a grey 1400 Champ. It would powerslide at 20km/hr on a dirt road. I now drive a "crotch compensator" as you refer to the new bakkies, but I don't love it like a loved the champ. Still pissed at myself for selling it.
I still use my 1986 Nissan 1400 on a daily basis. It carries a fair load from time to time. I've made a few changes in the carb, I've fitted a Weber 32/34 and gone to electronic ignition. But thats all. I absolutely love my little bakkie.
Nostalgia overload. I learned to drive in one of these. My dad bought his brand new in 1982, and had it for over 10 years. He also taught me how to do doughnuts in that bakkie when I was 14 years old. Then there was a TV ad where a guy rides on a motorcross track with his, and my dad, in his alcohol overload state, tried the same 🤦♂😂
Nice job on the little bakkie. I owned a network installation business at on stage and it came with a bunch of them. Despite my misgivings they turned out to be absolute winners and I ended up keeping one of the older ones at home as a runabout. It had more than 400k km on the clock and was utterly reliable. It could also drift around a wet traffic circle without asking.
We had one in Lusaka for 15 years. No braai was complete without taking this on a beer and charcoal run. Never seen a video on the Champ, you sir, have a new sub.
I have a 2000 1400, NO rust due to my squrting old engine oil in every nook and cranny in my bakkie, I have also installed an electric fan in the space between the grill and radiator, its controlled by a toggle switch which brings the fan on when I see the temp going up on the guage in heavy traffic, I love this bakkie.
I am loving your channel, I grew up in South-Africa and have always told people that we had some seriously unique and special cars. Now I can just point them to your channel and say I told you so 😊
My first vehicle was a 1200. After that I bought a new 1400 in 1981, then a new 1400 Deluxe (with mags!) and then a new white 1400 Sport. They were amazing!
The love for the Datsun bakkie started for me when I was 6 years old in 1978. My father bought the Datsun 1200 before the B120 second hand. I still own it and I owen 6 more bakkies now from 12 to 1400's and still looking for more
My step father had the 1200 for so many decades. It just kept going and going. Never a single issue. The only issues later in its life was the drivers seat started to collapse (dad wasn't light) and ignition broke (due to very heavy bunch of keys). They definitely don't make cars like that any more.
Great little bakkies, I learned to drive in one, was my first car, drove to school in matric, towed a small caravan, loaded 3 friends and a trailer and travelled all over the country, also owned another two later in life (sorry I sold them...), they were bullet proof and if I recall could clock over 150kph when unloaded. Thanks, you brought back a lot of fond memories

Man alive...this video took me back so many years and happy memories! My dad had a baby blue 4 speed Deluxe which was stolen in '92, I got a brand new metallic blue 1400 Champ in '93 whilst in matric and that carried me through my student and 1st 5 years of working life! In 2001 I bought my last Champ. To this day I regret every selling it! Think it's time to find a fairly decent one that I can restore to it's former glory...
Stunning video, man! I fully agree that these little humble vehicles became so popular, because of their integrity. It is what it is and no showiness or pretension with them. They were cheap to buy, RELIABLE and economical to run. Best of all was that you could still buy replacement parts (including chassis sections) brand new from the dealerships at a fraction of the price of similar parts from other brands. Keep up the great work!
If Nissan bring back the 1400 Champ tomorrow i will buy it immediately. i Had a Champ that i modified with a Nissan EXA turbo engine, now that was great fun to drive of all the Bakkies i ever owned.

Just as a side note, the NP 200, Fiat Strada an OpelCorsa were all built on the Corsa platform. Opel had a controlling stake in Nissan and Fiat at the time and standardised the platforms. Had a 1975. 1200 cc. Datsun and could enlarge the cab by fitting a back panel and roof from a 2000 model champ. Later sold the 1200 and bought a 1400 champ. With some easy upgrades of the exhaust , electric fan and tyres ECT got a fuel consumption of 15 km/I. This was back in the day when fuel cost R5 per liter. Still think about those time when it was simple and easy to do maintenance and mod a car. Had to learn how to tune the carb by ear and closing the air screw and backing out 2 1/2 turn and the fine tune till engine runs smooth. Had to do valve stem seals on the 1200 when we bought it off an auction and decided to overhaul the engine. Big ends , mains the whole lot cost R1000 and a Saturday morning, between me and my dad. To my shame I still went out the Friday and only clocked in at 10am on the Saturday, finding him with a stripped block busy cleaning and honing the sleeves. Boy what fond memories. I bought my Datsun 1400 bakkie brand new in 1985. It was fantastic. I would service it myself as it was just too easy to do! The only downfall was that it just rusted away. I drove it for years until it basically rusted away.
Today even in 2024 I sometimes think maybe I must search for a decent looking champ.. I miss my old Corsa Bakkie but I want something without any BS. No power steering, No electronics.. Just the necessary to drive from point A to B.

Got to love a bakkie!
I drove a company one for a year and a half. Great reliable, but hell on the legs of a 6 ft guy. My knees hung around my ears. My head never reached the roof. They should have given it MORE LEGROOM!!!
I bought my Datsun 1400 bakkie brand new in 1985. It was fantastic. I would service it myself as it was just too easy to do! The only downfall was that it just rusted away. I drove it for years until it basically rusted away.
Mazda B1600. Love them
Had a live yellow SPORT.
WITH FULL SOUND... GOOD OLD DAIS
My grandfather had one, and my uncle owned 2, a sub contractor I work with also owns 2.
Today even in 2024 I sometimes think maybe I must search for a decent looking champ.. I miss my old Corsa Bakkie but I want something without any BS. No power steering, No electronics.. Just the necessary to drive from point A to B.
This guy is so cute!!😍😍
I dunno why the car industry forgot about small bakkies, I love my NP200.
You should do the menaces of CT, the Citi Golf and Polo Vivo. Slightly stanced with an exhaust kit, and our buddies egos compete with M drivers.
Unfortunately i can't drive one, too tall. Otherwise i would buy one. Such a cute and well built machine with loads of personality.
Great video! Would love to see a video on the hilux or another SA legend like the Opal Superboss
A Superboss v Gusheshe episode is on my channel page!
