The more organic the source, the more they shine. But as for hated brands, that's Bose and Beats. I agree that Grados are overrated today, but I think that's because they refuse to deviate from the sound signature that make them famous. Consider the options that made them famous. The SR60 was decent in 1994 if you didn't have Stax or Sennheisers. Heck, the SR60 was my first decent quality headphone and they'll always have a place in my heart for that reason. Finally, you may not like Dan Clark Audio (formerly MrSpeakers), but I was pretty impressed with the Voce.

Yea, that kinda bothered me with those guys, plus it threw off the accuracy of the video, at the other 2 places they were allowed to listen to whatever they wanted, at the last place it was "listen to these 2 specific songs off of vinyl" when the majority of people, listen to mp3s. It skews the results in the favour of the super high end, due to the different type of audio, and specific songs.

The difference between a 320kbps mp3 or ogg, aac etc. and a lossless file isn't noticeable for a majority of people. Most people also don't have a good enough source to hear the difference anyways.
128kbps is borderline ok, still passable, but countless ABX tests on the best amps, Dacs and headphones show the human ear cant tell the difference between 256 kbps and completely lossless. And science also confirms this as the "lossy" portion is entirely inaudible to the human ear anyhow. Also, allegorically, I cant tell the difference of 256 and lossless on my $1000+ headphone system. So jokes on you for wasting harddrive space on "lossless" snake oil. All you're "hearing" with lossless is selection bias. $2000 will make mp3s and lossless sound better and make you enjoy well recorded/mastered music better. What it wont do is enable you to tell the difference between 192kbps and lossless. It's humanly impossible. It's snake oil.

@@leowzhilin The opinions are subjective tbh, I wouldn't recommend my set (Sony DMP-Z1 with Z7 as headphones) to you since it's too pricey, it's a gigantic player with a built-in amp. As for music format, I listen to DSD for classical music mostly, better than flac in terms of details, sounds are richer. But if you want an entry level combo just go with the Sony A55 with some decent amp, choose a headphone that suits your taste, it's good enough if you're not being picky. I recommend Sony because their retail store allows you to try their products with their amps. And last, don't use the phone as a player, if you can't tell the differences between a phone and a walkman, then probably you don't need products like this. But anyway I suggest try them on before you make any purchases.
It's a completely fair comparison.. these are the environments the different headphones are made to be in. You don't go out and buy a pair of PS2000e's and then hook them up directly to your phone..
Grado make sense. You don't want to pair your expensive headphone with a weak source like the DAC on iPhone (which is pretty good by standard), you listening directly to analog source. Even if the low and mid price get the same treatment, they won't worth it anyway.
These days a hifi amplifier is a hifi amplifier; the baseline quality for even the most basic-ass stuff is so high it's legitimately questionable whether going from $100 up to $20,000 will get you literally any improvement. We are living in an age of cheap-bordering-on-free electronics. The speakers or headphones are where every dollar still counts because the difference is in physical materials physically moving air, not in the electronics.

I get what John Grado means about making a headphone for music rather than tests and sound effects. I'm very privileged to own the PS2000e and a Chord Mojo, which plays CD rips (WAV) from my iPad Pro. Currently I'm listening to an album of J.S. Bach organ pieces, played by Florence Mustric on the Beckerath tracker organ in Cleveland. The tonality is amazing from this purely acoustic instrument.

@@ibrahimbasic4575 A DAC is generally used in combination with an amplifier. Note: those headphones have an impedance that needs an amplifier. Your phone can drive up to 32ohms, I'm not sure what those grados were, but I know they need amplification to get the full use out of them. In amplification often there's buzzing, or noise of some sort. DACs will clean it up, and make it sound godly. So a good DAC/AMP combo from a good audio source is vital when enjoying a pair of headphones of that caliber. To put it in perspective, what they did is drive a 1980s mustang. But it was an automatic.
@@LiViDHOBO yea I'm familiar with what's going on, the headphone isn't getting it's full use by just driving it off of someone's phone To my knowledge all the problems u stated come from dacs that are damaged or cheap dacs that get damaged easily, but to me I think dacs won't make a difference unless your dac is broken in which case buying a new one could improve audio quality, dacs just convert all your ones and zeros into actual stuff we can hear so y would it make a difference if I bought a dac or used the dac off a computer. This is just my knowledge I could be wrong about external dacs actually being the same but I'd like to hear other people's opinions.
Simple. It was made by them, and they have to pay the bills and the people who worked for them. Like grado, they only produce few headphones, and these headphones needs to be able to pay their bills, and research/development. Them being expensive is not the issue. You're the one to decide whether its worth it or not.

Absolute best listening experience for me was the Omnimax theater in Lubbock which would show off their epic sound system before each film by playing a piece of music where each instrument was assigned it's own speaker(s) that were placed all around the theater. It wound up feeling like you were sitting in the middle of an orchestra. Every time I went there music was so overpowering I'd find myself smiling uncontrollably. So I can relate to their look of, holy crap, something I just listened to is making me giddy.
Take into account that in the last headphones not only the headphones are much better but the all the audio chain is also much much better than listening trough bluetooth to a mp3 file.
High-end audio is a bit like fine wine tasting...unless you have adequate experience and knowledge in the field, it's very difficult for the average person to make any meaningful conclusions on how they feel. This isn't at all their fault, but it's simply the truth behind why most people don't completely get it at first glance.

@@leowzhilin The opinions are subjective tbh, I wouldn't recommend my set (Sony DMP-Z1 with Z7 as headphones) to you since it's too pricey, it's a gigantic player with a built-in amp. As for music format, I listen to DSD for classical music mostly, better than flac in terms of details, sounds are richer. But if you want an entry level combo just go with the Sony A55 with some decent amp, choose a headphone that suits your taste, it's good enough if you're not being picky. I recommend Sony because their retail store allows you to try their products with their amps. And last, don't use the phone as a player, if you can't tell the differences between a phone and a walkman, then probably you don't need products like this. But anyway I suggest try them on before you make any purchases.
GRADO is good but the audio player also helped boosting your experience, therefore not really a fair comparison.
That is what I kept thinking. They had so much extra with the GRADO not just the headphones.
Having only the headphones wouldn't be fair either, since the Grado are made to be paired with an amp (and preferably some other gear aswell).
It's a completely fair comparison.. these are the environments the different headphones are made to be in. You don't go out and buy a pair of PS2000e's and then hook them up directly to your phone..

You don't want to pair your expensive headphone with a weak source like the DAC on iPhone (which is pretty good by standard), you listening directly to analog source.
Even if the low and mid price get the same treatment, they won't worth it anyway.

These days a hifi amplifier is a hifi amplifier; the baseline quality for even the most basic-ass stuff is so high it's legitimately questionable whether going from $100 up to $20,000 will get you literally any improvement. We are living in an age of cheap-bordering-on-free electronics. The speakers or headphones are where every dollar still counts because the difference is in physical materials physically moving air, not in the electronics.

Even the low end Grado's are amazing. I've got the SR60E and it really is like you're there compared to cheap headphones.

M50 is a classic model, and a standard, I really like it.
M50X is definitely up there, at least for Grado I feel like they should've slot them for middle price tier and test the SR225e instead, that's their most "worth it" model.

Actually Grado are open back so you really hear everybody and everything unless it's just incredibly loud , imakes it safer for walking, but it definitely doesn't block everybody out

I get what John Grado means about making a headphone for music rather than tests and sound effects. I'm very privileged to own the PS2000e and a Chord Mojo, which plays CD rips (WAV) from my iPad Pro. Currently I'm listening to an album of J.S. Bach organ pieces, played by Florence Mustric on the Beckerath tracker organ in Cleveland. The tonality is amazing from this purely acoustic instrument.
I hope the audio technician got to try the Grado's

Note: those headphones have an impedance that needs an amplifier. Your phone can drive up to 32ohms, I'm not sure what those grados were, but I know they need amplification to get the full use out of them.
In amplification often there's buzzing, or noise of some sort. DACs will clean it up, and make it sound godly.
So a good DAC/AMP combo from a good audio source is vital when enjoying a pair of headphones of that caliber.
To put it in perspective, what they did is drive a 1980s mustang. But it was an automatic.

To my knowledge all the problems u stated come from dacs that are damaged or cheap dacs that get damaged easily, but to me I think dacs won't make a difference unless your dac is broken in which case buying a new one could improve audio quality, dacs just convert all your ones and zeros into actual stuff we can hear so y would it make a difference if I bought a dac or used the dac off a computer. This is just my knowledge I could be wrong about external dacs actually being the same but I'd like to hear other people's opinions.

Absolute best listening experience for me was the Omnimax theater in Lubbock which would show off their epic sound system before each film by playing a piece of music where each instrument was assigned it's own speaker(s) that were placed all around the theater. It wound up feeling like you were sitting in the middle of an orchestra. Every time I went there music was so overpowering I'd find myself smiling uncontrollably. So I can relate to their look of, holy crap, something I just listened to is making me giddy.
I own a Grado myself! (Not those, mine are way less expensive) they're great!
Take into account that in the last headphones not only the headphones are much better but the all the audio chain is also much much better than listening trough bluetooth to a mp3 file.
