#mycology #shrooms #cultivation
Youll never forget the first time you harvest. It really is magical😊
This is all the insight I need to start my at home shroomie family.
Are you ok with the knowledge?
Damn those shrooms are friking strong! That genetic is unreal!
There are so many of those, that the presure goes so wide area that those hold the weight.
Thank you! This set up seems ideal for us newbies who want to try different strains. ✌🏼♡︎
Woah your video quality skyrocketed my guy!! This is by far the best video I have watched about mycology for research, of course. Thank you!! 🙏 keep posting please, I’ll be there to watch and like every vid along with others!
This has honestly mind blowned me cause why didn't I think of just getting another tub? Helps prevent less contam depending on the strain
@Stay.Shroomy I so appreciate your channel and that of Stipe, from the Shroomery. Good to have accurate information, in contrast to so many channels that just repeat long debunked myths and misinformation about cultivation. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your explanations! Seriously, all the other videos from people talk about how everything has to be sterile and I know enough about biology and sterile processes...so it just didn't make sense that everyone is so stressed about it lol
I would love a tutorial for your mason jar spawning!
Once you spawn to bulk, there is no need for sterile technique. Before that though, it is needed.
@@TeaTellyWMaria What does this even mean lol? The jargon used is so confusing for someone who's trying to get into this for the first time. If I were to do just one shoe box instead of four like in the video, which yields an ounce of dry fruit, that doesn't seem like "bulk." So why would I need to worry so much about sterilization? As he said there are all kinds of bacteria floating around the air, how the hell would I keep the bin sterile while putting in the substrate and spores?
@@RC-hv1yx He means that when you are creating spawn (grain with spores to colonize) the bowls, grain and cap need to be sterile or you'll have mold for sure there.
even pan cyans grows in shoeboxes they are great.
Very nice. A few tips I use. I like to pack the edge, add more coir to level to help stop side-pinning, and I wash my hands with Hibiclens (chlorhexidine gluconate) without any issues going w/o gloves. Also wanted to note the vid thumbnail is using millet as food, and I like it best for similar dense growth and many good flushes.
Thanks for the video. I’m going to try it now and I’ll give you an update in a couple of weeks!
Which strain did you go with and did you have any luck?
@@ross5839 I just got a great flush of Hill Billy’s and my APE’s are pinning!
@@ross5839 went with Hill Billy and A.P.E.s and they were both great flushes!
How did it go?
@@jose2226 the first two sets of shoeboxes went great, good yields and good second flushes. I had some contamination in a couple of shoeboxes, but I live in SoCal and we went through some wicked hot days and weeks. I was thinking about putting the shoebox into a Martha tent when they start to pin. Any thoughts about that?
Thabk you for the idea about keeping inside of a mono bin. Perfect 👌
Thank you for this setup idea , it gave me success. ❤
Nice, good info on gloves/no gloves during that step.
Glad it was helpful!
Ive tried so many times. Ive used bags ive used jars ive used petri dishes ive used toats. Every time it gets that green and blue mold. The only time ive grown mushrooms is one time i squirted half a syringe into a 50 gal pot i was growing bud in organically. Mycelium took over the whole top layer about and inch thick just under the surface. But it never fruited. It was Ecuadorian cubensis i think, was years ago.
whats your sterile workspace like? I see tons of people using box fans and furnace filters, which I do not recommend. Either use a properly made SAB or commercial grade laminar flow hood. I've been using a SAB for over 10 years!
@@Stay.Shroomy .... I'm so confused. So you can't just do this in a regular room in your home? You need some kind of filtration system that is likely very expensive..?
With coir I don't wear gloves, but any bagged substrate material that has manure, definitely wear gloves.
Haha ya I don't disagree. Never actually used any manure. Just BRF and coir.
This may be a stupid question, but why?
@@adityaprasad465 manure is 💩, and it's just been a habit not to put my hand in 💩. Hands free Japanese toilet is the way to go 🙌🙌
@@edwardmitchell7 Haha that makes sense. I figured if it's cured and sterilized it doesn't matter, but yeah. Wasn't sure if you meant it would be a contam risk.
@Stay.Shroomy what are ur:
1. Spawn to grain ratio
2. Substrate recipe
genius 2 strain 1 tub
Thank you
Very Nice! Enjoyed your video. Thanks
There are studies showing that full spectrum blue light or white light are the best for mushrooms.
Even while kept in 24/7 light scenarios with no periods of darkness.
They prefer far-end blue light so full spectrum blue light is the best, like 7000K but I go with 6000K full spectrum which is slightly blue. 5000k is absolute white and is still better than red light. Red lights hinder mushroom growth.
Thanks!
Best video i seen so far, thank u
Glad it helped
Thanks. Nice and tight...definitely sending new hobbyist friends to this. Was wondering about your typical RH where you live? At 6500' we are pretty dry so I'm working on KISS ways to keep the fruiting chamber humid. Diaper tek as well as water beads are the path at the moment. In appreciation.
I'm in Denver!
I wish I would have known it was this easy the first I will be doing this on next ones just waiting on the culture now
I'm all about KISS and DIY
How did it go?
great video man !!! straight forward an to the Point . got a lead on spores or lc for any variety of PE ??? Thanks !!!
Hey Shroomy, how much water did u use and does it work on magic mushrooms as well? great video
You'll need to watch the separate prep videos for the grain and the substrate for how much water. These are magic mushies in the video.
Pe penis envy?
I agree with you with the gloves kind of. Yes there is contamination in the air.
Why its important to wear gloves is it reduces your chance of contam. Why?
Yeast and other contaminants on your skin can take over very quickly if you skipped a step. Dry coir is F.U.L.L of trich. Id rather spend the 5$ and 15 seconds once a year then to waste 2+ weeks of waste grain spawn
Brother that’s the point of a tent or still air box. So airflow isn’t stirring contaminants. So the chances are better there but you should wear gloves. Just lazy and careless to lot imo
Beautiful
I let my grain spawn go until it's almost all white with mycelium.
Crazy amount of choke but it gets the results
Is there holes on your shoebox tubs?
No
OK, I have a question: When I'm traveling in a camper(min)van, I want to grow mushrooms. BUT I only have room for the smaller showbox. Is that larger box on the outside absolutely necessary? I would love to add mushrooms to my already small microgreen garden, but space is a concern.
What is the core
woops !!! hahaha , i just clicked on more an see you got it covered , be in touch soon thanks ! Peace !
Did you use any heating ? What strain is this? I never seen somwtjing so huge.
Question , once you first flush. Theres a layer of myceliyn or aborted small pins that i cant remove( thry get squished) how do you rehydrate ? With out it rotting ?
those shrooms have nba player genetics
lol
I feel like i watched this yesterday.... Reupload?
Yea I changed some of the audio. Went on a bit of a rant and forgot to mention a step.
Is there a way to encourage native, wild mushrooms to grow outside? I have no intention of eating them, I just love all the little mushrooms that occasionally pop up in my yard, but I'm wondering if there's a way to get them to show up more often. I cannot use manure even if I wanted to, so anything other than that. Compost and a lot of misting maybe?
bury some caps in shady spots around your property
4:12 those fruits lack oxigen. The micelium covering all the stems indicates that.
Did you mist the substrate layer before closing the shoeboxes?
I grew mycellium in a bag. when it was white and started to grow mushrooms inside i moved to a shoe box and covered with soil. It pinned everywhere so I moved to fruiting box with air vents and light. After 2 weeks nothing had happened really so I spritzed with water. Been another week still nothing really has happened.
What Am I doing wrong?
update. Ive noticed a secondary like mold hairs growing on the leftover pins.. It must have been contaminated.
I had been lifting the top off my flowering box 2X a day for air for a few sec.
can you use the shoe box method in a greenhouse outside? I would like to grow my own, but really do not want to bother with growing them in the basement. I know I'd forget they were there.
give it a try and report back! I don't have any outdoor space.
i dont understand what you do there but it seems fun
Did you do anything with the sub, how did you not get any contamination, that's crazy, please explain better
I used agar to produce clean spawn from quality genetics. Thats pretty much the gist of it!
What are those holes inside of your outer tubs? There's some kind of membrane in front of it seems? Is this necessary?
Haha no audio? I talk about it, they are 6 1.25" covered in micropore tape. There are many kinds of monotub designs, this is just one I prefer.
Confused how/why you don’t get any side pins??
I get so many😑
Can you do this with psilocybin? Always wanted to try but never did because it seems like a lot
this method is actually mostly just for psilocybin mushrooms. gourmet mushrooms don't do well with this technique.
Is this a good method for other types of mushrooms like oysters or lions mane?
How often are you supposed to give them water
do you need the monotub? and where do you get the spawn?
you can fruit shoeboxes without a monotub, but I highly recommend using one. lots of people just take a 2nd tub and put it on top, a dub-tub. I never liked those too much.
And this applies to all mushrooms..Because certain ones grow in poop...?
Thanks so you don't mist it with water or anything
Typically no that's what fruiting it inside a mono helps with
@@Stay.Shroomy thanks a lot
Any difference to procedure when cultivating Natalensis?
Sorry never grown them but currently trying
Is that 100% coir ir is it cvg ? Nice grow btw
100% coir thanks
Could I do a normal grow bag, wait for the grain to colonize, then mix it and transfer it to a box like this?
certainly and I would recommend that as bags are not the best fruiting chamber option
@@Stay.ShroomyI have been thinking about this also. I have 2x 2lb grow bags ready to colonise. What ratio coir would I mix with please?
Those look like GCT
You don't put holes in the shoe boxes?
Naw
What’s the point of the shoeboxes if they fruit in a monotub anyway? I’m honestly asking I’m gonna start another run but am stuck between monotub or shoebox/dub tub
The point is to grow mushrooms. This tek is not intended to replace monotubs at all. Its for people that use shoeboxes and want the best way to fruit them. Monos have positive qualities all their own. A few reasons you might want to do this method...
1. You don't have to mix multiple jars of spawn together. 1 spawn jar = one shoebox.
2. You can grow more than one variety in the same space.
3. They are easier to manage than a full size mono substrate at harvest and cleanup.
Do I need to leave them in cooled area
60-75 Fahrenheit is ideal
@@Stay.Shroomy tnx a lot
Are these strong enough to make you really trip?
I just ate some that I grew myself at the Phish festival and had a blast!
Can I use potting mix instead of coir?
Coir is ideal because it’s nutrient deficient. Thus, contaminants won’t inherently grow on it
Ive got some Golden teachers growing but im seeing an issue they were pinning but turned into lil fat balls with no stem
Why is this happening
Mutations we call them blobs. You can try the next tub adding a compacted 2" top layer of coir at spawning. Seems to help with the issues.
Is that reg coco coir or a mix? Also do u make ur grain or wheres the best place to buy
i get the 5 kilo blocks. theres several brands. yeah I cook my grains, I prefer triple cleaned equine oats from a farm/ranch store or kroger brand wild bird seed (in the pet aisle). you can find links to the Amazon products in the video description!
Plain coir is just fine. The main thing is clean spawn to begin with.
I would love to know where to find this varieties?
They are biiiiig
Is there any place I could get them from?
I don't currently have any for sale, but you could probably find someone in my discord server that has it to trade. It was Melmac PE Thick Penis, to be specific. Links in the description
@Stay.Shroomy you still got your website? also, I take it you don't do your interactive mushroom Q&A on TH-cam anymore?
You could get that from my vendor if you want.
He's on instagram.
@Charlesmyco
I have two shoe boxes fruiting 1 with sub and 2 ub's and 1 ub by itself to see what happens but i have 5 ub's inoculating separate but they all are colonizing at different speeds
How long would you say it takes for them to be fully ready from just planting them?
about a month
Hello do i hv to let them colonize first ? Or can i go straight to fruiting?
the colonizing conditions is an old technique. i do recommend going straight to fruiting now. it speeds things up significantly.
@@Stay.Shroomy ok that's what I did...thank you
I went and watch your twitch video..I noticed you did pasteurize.. ur substrate..so you dont need to do that?
And I went to you amazon store...when will you have substrate on stock?
Did you buy tubs with holes or you make the holes?
Made them myself... Jammed a screwdriver thru a glass coke bottle cap then heated the bottle cap with a torch and then pushed the hot bottle cap thru the plastic. Be careful not to touch the hot plastic, and a make spot to catch dripping plastic between holes while reheating.
do you leave foil on those jars after inoculating them when you use the method of turning the lid
unmodded flipped lids don't need foil at any point ever! one of the big reasons I like it.
@@Stay.Shroomy even not when you pc them ?
Is there a specific coir that is needed that is maybe pasturized ?
Bro... That Thing is HUUUUUUUGE!
what size are the shoe boxes?
US size 10 / EU size 44 😋
Does anyone know the average yield with this method?
1 dry oz per quart of spawn used
What grain is you using
Looks like whole oats
Whats that ??a mould?
I Miss you
Did you pasteurize your cocoa coir or is it just soaked in tap water?
Tap water 💦
Is everything completely sterile using alcohol or something?
there are no hidden steps
what substrate did you use?
Cocoa coir
i know you aint eatin all those 😉😉
do you make your own substrate and spawn ?
yes i have vids for both on my channel
Dude, you must really dislike gloves
(Seriously though this is pretty cool)
He never added water!
Everything is already hydrated to field capacity.
Dont you get pins growing on the sides?
Side pins don't matter. Bonus mushrooms
Are those all basically seeds? If so why are there only a few big ass mushrooms?
some cultures grow lots of small mushrooms. this culture grows a few very large mushrooms. overall yield is the same.
Do u sterilise ur top soil for casing layer
Pasteurizing is enough for monotub substrates. There is no point in sterilizing when the grow will take place in a non-sterile environment. You must however sterilize your spawn.
what shoetubs do you use?
Sterlite 6 qt
@@Stay.Shroomy thank you!
I like wearing gloves so I don't get core under my fingernails.
epiiiiiiiiiiiic
do you sterilize the coco coir?
Nope just hydrate it
What is the spawn made from?
Triple cleaned equine oats
Is this the same munchauzen from the shroomery ?
Yes
@@Stay.Shroomy Damn man that's cool 😎.
I learned all I know from you, Rodger rabbit, pasty etc. it was different before the TH-cam age kicked in, lol you had to read and really search for the knowledge.
The shroomery and the Let's grow Mushrooms DVDs were all I needed. 😂
Keep it up man 👍
Did you just use regular coir?
yup!
Are these 6-quart shoeboxes?
yes
cant you use the spent substrate to make more? :D instead of the "spawn"
Thats called super spawning and I wouldn't recommend it
Isnt PE x Melmac = Thrasher?
Its not PE x Melmac. Melmac is a type of PE.
@@Stay.Shroomy OK. it says it's a "variant of a variant" from Melmac. So... I guess they just kept cloning Melmacs til they got something different.
This Is Magic Mushroom??
Potatoes
Somethin like that!
Ngl its almost two weeks no pins yet
Sometimes we draw an unlucky hand with the culture we germinate. I had 2 Gandalf cultures last year that would remained completely healthy but did not fruit at all. If you have a similar experience, I'd just go back to spores and start a new culture.
@@Stay.Shroomy unfortunate
Did you sterilize the coir?
No
Did you mean "pasteurize"?
@@SilverPhoenix-PlazmaMoonno, I meant sterilize. But yes, the question could have been sterilize or pasteurize. 😉
@ukegirl13 Can you help me understand a bit more? Pasteurization is good enough for non-nutrient substrates, but sterilization is recommended for manure and wood pellets etc. Is this correct? Which conditions would sterilizing CVG be beneficial? Thanks in advance. 🙏🍄🤙
