How to Grow Mushrooms: Dub Tub Method

  • This method to grow mushrooms is one of my long time favorites because it was my first bulk method after learning BRF cakes. I used to use a cheese shredder to shred 4 BRF cakes until i learned how to use quart of rye grain spawn and it worked every time.
In this video i could have gotten a bigger harvest if i would have used a sawdust substrate like Agrocybe aegerita prefers but as you can see they still tolerate the coco coir.

Can i grow white button mushrooms this way, because they need around 90% humidity of what i heard, and at the fruiting stage the second lit is only resting on the other which results in less humidity if im not wrong. What can i do to keep it more humid, so i can grow them?

@@wilkiedilkieagree 100%. In fact most tek methods don’t have enough fae which equals subpar results. I always try to replicate Mother Nature conditions for mushrooms as well as cannabis. Think about it: mushrooms grow outdoors, not confined in a box indoors. I create those same conditions regardless of the tek. High humidity, fresh O2 and temps similar to Mother Nature ie: high 70s day low 70s night. Led lighting on timers for day. Room humidity between 65-80%. Not everyone has a dedicated room for this but if you can you are in full control of the ambient environment. Even doing cakes in sgfc have huge yields when done in these rooms. The lid is not a tight seal even when clicked into place. It is fine how it is for 6-10 days during colonization. You can add a couple holes to the lid and cover with tape and that’s fine too.
The top tub is removed 3-5 times daily to fan and mist to replace the air and it works fine. You can add holes to the top bin if you want as well.

@@astbrnrd I'm a beginner too, but thinking about it, I'd presume that field capacity wouldn't be the same after the mycelium has started fruiting, and especially after harvesting. Mushrooms are 90% water, so if you've just harvested a bunch of mushrooms, that means the water that *was* in your substrate is now inside all those mushrooms. So if you want more mushrooms (i.e., another flush/harvest), you'll need to introduce much more water back into the substrate (i.e., rehydrate it by dunking/soaking). I hope this makes sense! 😊

    • @SporenSprout

You don’t need any grow tents or special environment, the tub provides the environment and you provide fresh air by fanning it 3-5 times per day and replenishing moisture on the top of the bin. Yes 1-2 LED strips in the basement is perfect.

@@tedkravos7129 the reasons I've heard for not spraying the mushrooms (or mycelium) directly are 1) because they are fragile and even the water droplets can bruise them, and 2) I think it was something about mushrooms will soak up water really fast, and too much water directly on them can increase contamination risk? This one I'm not sure about.
