  • Spotted in forest round Monkeyland near Plettenberg/Knysna this beautiful bird Knysna Loerie also known as Knysna Tauraco or Bosloerie, Tauraco corythaix, is a relative of the European cuckoo. It is an elusive but exciting bird, with its vividly contrasting red wings and green body. The red and green colors of birds, are generally caused by light reflection, but in the case of the Knysna Loerie, it is the work of real pigment. Nearly identical to Livingstone Loerie ofwel Livingstone's Turaco (Tauraco livingstonii). Round Monkeyland you can hear their call often and spot them a lot. This movieclips (origional in HD) are taken in the open forest but they have also some in Birds of Eden park.

We had these in our gardens when I was younger, they would eat these green fruit on the trees that looked like mini mini pumpkins. Great video, you can see them so close. They look so beautiful when they fly with their blood red colour on the underside of their wings!

Always an amazing Bird to watch if you get a glimpse of this illusive shy but beautiful emerald forest hopper! It remains one of my favourite African Birds in the wild with its colourful feathered plumage of red and green.
