  • In this video, I go over my process for fixing a drain clog/leak on a GE Profile counter depth bottom freezer refrigerator (PWE23KSDFSS). This is not a comprehensive repair video. I would not recommend this for anyone who is uncomfortable with working on appliances.
    Part: WR01X11006 Refrigerator Check Valve
Commenters have said these models can also be fixed with this video: PYE22KSKBSS, PWE23KMDEES

You Sir. You…..you deserve a large, easy to read mantle, that describes how important you have been to mankind. So all the world, especially your family, knows you have made a difference. A difference that most small minded can’t comprehend, like myself. I owe you a frosty beverage, nothing but good thoughts all your way!

Thanks Rick! Just like all the other commenters, finding your video made the task of unclogging our refrigerator drain pipe a 30 min job instead of the hours I was envisioning. Other videos show how to remove the bottom freezer, access the drain plug from behind a panel on the inside and then use hot water and a turkey baster to unclog. Your method was much easier. Our model number for anyone else looking is PYE22KSKBSS and it was identical to the video.

Another person who owes you some thanks and a virtual beer. Super easy. When I pulled the cap and small drain line off, I did have some water come out, but not sure if everything above it is clear or clogged with ice. After 12 hours it seems fine (no leaking and no water in freezer tray), but I'm going to give it a bit more time. If it does start leaking again, I think I'll just move all the food to another refrigerator in the house and just unplug this one for a day and let everything melt and drain. Hopefully I don't have to mess with it. BTW, I was shocked at how much gunk this cap caught. Easily a half inch of what felt like decomposing rubber. Makes you wonder where that came from.

    • @martyarnwine
      @martyarnwine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

FYI, I did have to unplug it and transfer food to another unit as it continued to leak on the floor. Checked it a day later and the pan had a lot more water, so I was pretty confident the ice in the line had melted and the problem was resolved. Drained that and plugged it back in and been working perfectly since!

Fantastic Video! My model number is a little different, however the unit appears, in all respects, to be the same! I cleaned all of the ice out of the freezer drain panel under the inside back cover and from the bottom of the freezer. A day later I found that ice was again forming in the in the drain catch inside the freezer. I then found this video, used your procedure and it is now fixed. From inside the freezer I could not reach the drain rubber drain/check valve. From the back it easily came off and yes, it was very clogged. Cleaned it up and did a little more surgery to it to open the hole a little more so it will go longer and may not clog again. They still do sell these if needed on the GE site. I tested the valve and it does appear to restrict water flow but I cannot imagine much of a need for that in a freezer of this size. Many, many thanks!!!!

Rick, I"m sending over a donation. When our fridge started leaking a while ago, I cleaned out behind that bottom panel at the back of the fridge as my first step. It was filthy (heads up, pet owners: Your dog or cat is shedding and your fridge is collecting it). I gently pushed the drain hose out of the way when I was vacuuming it, not knowing what it was for. A couple weeks later it leaked again. DANG
After watching all the same videos Tobe B mentions where they were dismantling the insides of the fridge, I threw up my hands and started shopping for a repair man for our 2015 GE Profile model PWE23KSDHSS counter depth. I'm in a rural area, so none were nearby. I decided to do one last search....
After watching your video, I took the back off again and tugged on that drain hose. There was a bunch of backed up water and the slotted fitting was completely clogged with debris. Why on earth would anyone tear apart the inside of the fridge when you can do this in 10 minutes by just removing the rear panel and cleaning a little slotted fitting?
    Thank you!

Absolutely the solution to the root cause! I did the complete disassembly approach from the front, suction out w a turkey baster then try the hot water - only treats the symptoms (although you do need to remove ice blocking the drain). Once I disconnected the black rubber connector to the tube, water spilled out - the blockage! After cleaning, I removed the connection between the two slots to give a larger slot. Never an issue since. Thank you!

  • @feversol

There are TWO drain tubes. My problem was the clogged black restrictor in the refrigerator tube which caused a backup and ice forming in and clogging the drain plug allowing water that should have gone down that tube to go into the bottom of the refrigerator under the bottom drawer then out of the door onto the floor. One of these many videos suggested replacing that black restrictor plug with with one having a larger hole. As I removed my black part off the tube, the bottom was brittle and broke off. That gave me a large hole that would no longer clog up with sediment. Apparently, that restrictor plug is supposed to allow the small amount of water to drain into the pan under the refrigerator while restricting the amount of ambient air that can go back into the refrigerator or freezer (in the tube that drains the freezer). I considered the problem resolved, put it back together and have not had a freezing issue again. The problem is NOT water freezing and plugging the tube. That is an SYMPTOM caused by the clogged black restrictor drain on top of that white tube. I had intended on drilling those small holes slightly larger, but when it broke off, I considered it just a larger hole that I had intended. Too big for sediment to clog and probably not too big that the refrigerator or freezer couldn't overcome that slight amount of extra air. If you open the door to refrigerator or freeze even once, you have let more ambient air in than that little plug could allow.

I had been working inside the refrigerator - pouring hot water down the drain but couldn’t get it to open. Followed your guidance and found my tube and black connector (why two little slits instead of a wider opening?) but they were bone dry and had no clog. I was about to give up and figured I could clean out the ice every quarter or so …. On a lark I poured hydrogen peroxide down the drain inside and waited 10 minutes. PRESTO where the hot water had not worked the peroxide opened it up and water is flowing. Still needed your guidance on the tube to get to the bottom of it. Thanks!

    Boom. Thanks! $350 saved.
Model number: PYE22KSKBSS w exact issue.
That black rubber cap just slides off. Lots of blockage! Maybe 16 oz of water drained out - a bowl would have been handy. I let the ice block in bottom melt then removed it in large chunks. Let it completely defrost so any ice melts. Then will run some water thru the lines. I cut the rubber slits off and left it wide open. Maybe I'll check it at a later date to see if I made a mistake.

If your freezer starts leaking again in the next two weeks after this fix then you will need to do a bit more. The drain above this will be frozen solid from being backed up due to the initial clog. so you need to remove the freezer door, gain access to the drain tube and pour boiling water from the top side of this tube to provide a clear path.

$385 seems very high if the drain is just clogged. I didn’t take long to fix. I’m not sure why they are calling it a maintenance issue. Rick, thanks for doing this. A friend and I went through the process as you depict it in the video, and no leaks for 5 days, then 2 big puddles on both front corners, which we have seen before. I really don't want to spend $3000+ for a new refrigerator and like this one but the water puddles are causing consternation in the household. Do you have any suggestions as to what could be the continuing cause? My engineer friend thinks it is related to when the auto-defrost kicks on and the drain pan cannot be utilized. Is there another hose drain elsewhere in this model? It is the PYE22PSHSS model, about 6 years old, and everything about it (front and back) looks exactly like the one you displayed in the video. Thanks in advance for any help you can be.

@@Rickmakes Rick, I took the entire drain tube out along with the black cap, all OK. The drain pan is completely dry, so nothing has come down the tube. I am thinking there may be another drain above this one that is blocked, causing the water from the defrost cycle to spread out and eventually fill, then spilling out to the floor in front. I just don't know where that drain is or how to get to it, from the front, or back. The GE manual is worthless and so is GE support. Any ideas on how to locate the possible blockage higher up would be great.
