  • I had recently been suggested this song and we finally did a (That Funny Feeling Reaction)
I am glad that you guys are enjoying these Bo Burnham reactions. I tried watching a Tim Minchin video the other day and just wasn't a huge fan. I am hoping to find another talented artist to do a reaction to. I love Funny videos and that is what I am looking for. I also love music that has a lot of feeling to it.

It's also another added euphemism to Bo's agoraphobia (fear of leaving the comfort of one's home), I think.
World at your fingertips = Internet in general, media, headlines, social media, smartphones
Ocean at your door = the vastness and emptiness of reality compared to Bo's always entertaining technology-induced reality

@@Send1tReacts I feel like it could really be either one. Climate change or what you said about being so stuck to your phone that you miss the real world. Cuz Bo talks about that elsewhere in the special too. So I feel like it's up to interpretation.

I take the meaning of the "Obeying all the traffic laws in GTA5" line as people turning to a game, that would otherwise intend mayhem, for some kind of control and normalcy that they're having a difficult time finding in the real world. Essentially relying on the virtual for a moment of feeling real.
Oh, also, I believe "Seven years to go" is the climate clock.

Agoraphobic is having an extreme or irrational fear of entering open or crowded places, of leaving one's own home, or of being in places from which escape is difficult. Also derealization is a feeling that one's surroundings are not real, especially as a symptom of mental disturbance.
You were pretty much spot on with your interpretation. Bo's basically describing nonsensical, crazy, and/or backwards things in the world that should seem out of place, wrong, or "funny" but everyone just accepts the craziness. This creates the sense of derealization and feels staying inside is best way to cope (agoraphobia).

Climate change, the ocean at your door, 7 years to go until it’s irreversible, that unapparent summer air in early fall, the quiet comprehending of the ending of it all.

Most people spend their days not really thinking about big issues or the fact that our planet is collapsing around us. I think "That Funny Feeling" is the feeling you get during those instances you actually face reality. It's the existential dread that pops up while you're doing something meaningless like scrolling through Facebook. The line "we were overdue, but this will be over soon", is either a reference to the pandemic or a mass extinction event in my opinion.

This is in my opinion the deepest song out of all of them. It doesn't look like it when you listen to it for the first time, he uses a lot of professional vocabulary that some may not have heard before, and a lot of the references are difficult to get, but once you take your time and look it up it puts you off your chair. It's mindblowing how genius the lyrics are and at the same time, the song is catchy and beautiful and well-performed.

The agora was the name for the market place in Ancient Greek culture, which was the main social gathering area too. So agoraphobia is a fear of public spaces - it is often associated with panic disorders. If you have a panic attack while out in public, you may start to avoid the place where it happened. But as you keep having them, more places become off limits until you don’t want to leave your home at all because you feel safe there.

    I take it as:
The whole world at your fingertips, as in: we all can have everything and anything that we want. From his experience he has everything he's ever wanted but
The ocean at your door: meaning everytime he leaves his house. Or comfort area he drowns.
He can have everything and yet still feel like he's drowning in life. Which is why hed rather stay...

Depending upon the perspective of the people involved, a gift shop at a gun range and a mass shooting at a mall are the same thing.
Also, like he said in All Eyes on Me: "You say the whole word's ending, honey it already did." there isn't some catastrophic thing set to happen in 2027. It already happened, in 2019. The world already ended. We're just in a very slow burn apocalypse right now. This is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper.

Yeah, the end isn't COMING. It isn't NEAR. We are LIVING THROUGH IT. We squandered our chances to prevent life as we know it from coming to an end, and now everything that comes next is just the slow winding down of this version of the world into... whatever comes next. The climate. The massive uptick in super-viral pathogens. The constant threat of impending nuclear war. Every time humanity has been faced with a doomsday scenario, instead of resolving it we've passed the buck down the line and now we're here... at the end of that line... and we're all watching as the reality sets in.
Nothing we do now can stop the chain reaction. All we can do is ride it out and hope some of us are still around once its done.

    My favorite song from inside!!!
7 years to go refers to a count down that is supposed to be when it is too late to counteract the effects of global warming. I think ocean at your door is also about global warming with the rising oceans as ice melts but that is just my take.
Agoraphobic refers to a debilitating social anxiety that often forces people to stay home and avoid others.
I also take the last repeating line "hey what can you say we were over due but it will be over soon" to be a reference to how we were due for a pandemic but it will (hopefully) be over soon
(Sorry if there are typos. I just got my eyes dilated at the eye doctor and can't see a thing I'm typing and am just trusting auto correct and my muscle memory)

This is my favorite song from this special; it makes me cry every time I hear it bc it is too damn real and bc more ppl were made aware of what's coming through this one song and I LOVE Bo for doing that for the planet. All the things he mentions are things that bug him, btw. Over the years he has mentioned these things as being irritants or annoyances in interviews, including how annoying it is to have loving supportive parents bc it doesn't work that way in the real world, and all that love and support at home in no way prepares you for reality, where the world just loves to build you up so that it can tear you down and if you have a need to please like Robert seems to, that critique can devastate, give you anxiety and panic attacks, like it did when he went from doing videos in his bedroom to doing live shows. It caused him to walk away from doing live shows, and although he walked away from that avenue, he kept busy in other forms of his chosen profession of entertaining the masses, and when he circled back around to comedy again, look at what he gave us 🌟🔥🌟
He has played guitar and piano forever. Check out 3.14 Apple Pi for some amazing fun from his early days ✌

I feel this song does a good job at showing both how far we have come and how we dont have a future, and how everything feels a bit pointless.
I got hit pretty hard by this, when I was working as a covid moniter in LA during the fires last year. I would be working with the sky being pure red, 3 masks and gloves while helping film a fashion show. It really felt hopeless to be there, knowing my job was to help keep people safe while being surrounded by what felt like the end of the world.

My take is that the funny feeling is the "derealisation" he tells you to google. It's that feeling of alienation and detachment from all those ridiculous things that are very real but also feel so unreal and distant from our lives (climate change, shootings, little things that don't really make sense in the background, the Pepsi half time show or the new live action lion king etc)

"The whole world at your fingertips, the ocean at your door" My interpretation of this line is saying that we have access to virtual all knowledge but outside that door the world feels so vast and unknown just like the ocean we can learn anything we want about it but it as soon as we step outside we realize how small we are compared to it which plays into the overall theme of the song being derealization it simply doesn't feel real

  • @beekind14

The ocean at your door is a double meaning I think, since he also talks about the rising oceans, and along with the 7 year reference, it's the climate clock and the time left on it. The ocean is at your door, you can go anywhere; or the ocean is at your door, the planet's dying.

While your take is legit and could be interpreted as such like with the gun range part, but I actually think he just mentions stuff that are part of his day to day life. Things he reads, watches, sees, does, etc... Like it sounds actually just like listing off his google searches and random things he did. I identify with that so maybe that was the idea since the song is about a feeling which would imply a song would wanna find a way to make it relatable. And we all know that feeling but can't quite describe it so he tried to capture that feeling by just going through all those things we and him do in a normal day, and that while the world is burning and about to die in 7 years. We imagine the world should be freaking out right now but students go to school, politicians debate about rent and celebrities worry about being cancelled; all of which may or may not have value to different extents to some people when there is a top priority that's being put off again and again. This one funny feeling you get about why is no one freaking out creates another funny feeling inside of knowing we're doomed yet not being able to do anything because nobody is doing anything, which Bo of course mentioned later as well. Does that make sense?

The whole world at your fingertips, The ocean at your door. It's another global warming reference. We have the whole world at our fingertips on our phones. THe height of technology, and we're about to be swept away by the rising seal levels.

"The whole world at your fingertips, the ocean at your door"
My initial take- because Bo can be so existential- was it was about climate change as we're all more consumed with whatever is going on with our phones than the bigger things happening right beside us but your take completely makes sense too with us neglecting the beauty right outside for whatever's online. Quite frankly, same concept applies either way; we're missing the more important matters in life for another few minutes on the internet to distract us....as I post on the internet instead of looking at the stars.

Regarding the line of “we were overdue but it’ll be over soon” could be referring to the pandemic. Typically a global plague of this magnitude happens roughly every 100 years and leading up to 2020 there was a rising sense of panic in the scientific community that we were “overdue” for another one of these events. And “it’ll be over soon” how many times have we heard that??

Check out some Elliott Smith songs and you can see the inspiration for the melody and tone of this

I was thinking another way. I thought it was about the homes built for the folks that could afford them, but they aren't appreciative of what they see. Their life is contained in the phone.

I think that funny feeling can be many things. Hopelessness, apathy, disassociation. That funny fealing is looking and the shit in the world, and realizing that the Gap is profiting off of monumental struggles. That we eat up subpar cash grabs with no effort like the live action Lion King, rralizing the world is permanently damaged in now 6 years. And we can't really do much about it anymore. But hey, what can you say, we were overdue. It'll be over soon.

It's a pity you didn't like Tim Minchin. Personally, I think he's a wonderful aussie bloke, and he's very close to my heart. He covers similar topic to Bo in his comedy, but maybe his style is what threw you off. Hope you find an artist you can enjoy as much as I enjoy Tim.

@@Send1tReacts thanks for giving it some consideration. If you haven’t already listened to it, I would recommend the following: “three minute song”, “rock and roll nerd” and “if I didn’t have you”. Anything from “Tim Minchin and the Heritage Orchestra” is also excellent.

The song is about existential dread. The over hyper corporate world. All the technology we have but all the societal and world ending things closing in. See all this messed up crap and that feeling u get. Y the fk is bugles giving us their take on race. U know how fk up and backward that is? 20 or 30 years ago that would sound insane. Now its normal

In my uneducated opinion, lyrics says to me how cynical the world and people are u can pretty much stick whatever i think is wrong with the world to his guitar play and rithm of his lyrics and it stil fits war anti abortion laws even for a 10 yr old rape victim etc so so many things that this song provoked my mind how to think of this world cynically its frightening how easy it is to be that cynical and still be 90% right about it..

I think its important to listen to this song knowing he wrote it during Covid. So most of the things he talks about happened during quarantine or were popular that year
