I always comment about that last scream, and you're the only reactor I've seen actually call it out. It was just so primal. Somethin' came outta him, on that one. Then he went off stage, had a panic attack and quit comedy for five years. What's, essentially, part 2 to the story is his "All Eyes on Me" song. A worthwhile follow up. After that there's a lot of ways to take the journey, but a journey certainly is. I'm sure we'll all be in the comments, guiding you.

Bo's a GENIUS and unfortunately has gone through a very hardcore battle with anxiety attacks during performances on stage. He went on a 5 year hiatus after this too. He was about to make a comeback in 2020 then the pandemic hit so he made a special called "Inside" fully filmed, written and edited by himself🔥

He also worked and produced his movie "Eight Grade" during his 5 year hiatus, I've also seen his interview where he was asked about his emotional state in the Making of Happy where he basically denied being as emotional as he appeared, but I to think he was going though something to let out a scream like that, so either he is a really good actor or he attempted to hide this in the interview, this I don't know might be a bit of both are true. one thing is for certain, even though I believe he was experiencing something with that scream, he is also a performer who got the job done in a perfect way, and like they say what makes a good movie? is great actors. there is a part to this off stage as well where he goes back stage and plays the piano, if you can find this or know what it is, it's also very good and then when he is done with that he walks out the back door of the stage into what looks like his house and his girlfriend or wife greets him. it's very interesting. Bo is a Genius in my book. I think I've seen everything he as ever done. what a talent.

"Is this like an improv performance?"
Very much the opposite. Bo is known for scripting every single second of his standup specials, from the jokes, to musical and lighting cues, etc. There are often visual and meta gags - for example, in one of his specials he makes a joke about video editing, and there's an instant, awkward cut that goes instantly into a completely different bit. In this performance, he himself is working the autotune with a pedal station at his feet (most obvious when he kneels down to use his hands), but even that is carefully thought out and planned. Though as others have mentioned, he did begin to fall apart at the very end.
He's been hired by other prominent comedians to produce their tv/streaming specials because of how brilliant his use of video is to the format - I believe Chris Rock is one of them, for example. He revolutionized what live standup specials are: instead of basically just recording a performance, the video itself is part of the performance.
Others have talked a bit about his career trajectory, but to add onto it: he was one of the earliest truly big/"viral" youtube stars. For a frame of reference, he was a featured performer at the first "TH-cam Live" event that was hosted by various popular youtubers and famous people from 'traditional' media like Katy Perry and the Black Eyed Peas. He performed a song called 'Welcome To TH-cam' that mocked other popular youtubers of the day, as well as youtube itself. It's worth mentioning that if you weren't around in those days, most of the other youtubers that were on there (including those he references in his song) would probably be completely unfamiliar to you, but he has continued to be successful, in large part because of how he has matured and adapted over the years. For what it's worth, while it might be worth checking out his oldest stuff (and this was when he was around 16), some of the humour is quite dated - there's still a lot of cleverness in there, and his musical ability was clear, but there was a lot of edgelordy jokes, some of which he himself has renounced as an adult. But it was when he began doing more of a proper standup career, especially with his specials which, as mentioned, he puts a lot of care into, that he really came into his own. Gradually he talked more about meta subjects like fame and entertainment in general, as well as his own relationship to it, as well as to his fans. He even often mocks himself for this - in the special where he performs From God's Perspective (one of my favourites), he sets it up by giving an earnest monologue about how he's just some kid and you shouldn't take his word as being especially intelligent or worthwhile, before ironically beginning, "Anyway, this is a song from the perspective of god..."
This performance was the culmination of what had been building for years. Not just his own emotions and fears and anxieties, but also themes he had been discussing in previous specials. So it was a very fitting 'farewell', until he returned with Inside which is distillation of all of that set against the apocalypse that is COVID. And which is an absolutely incredible work of art.
Anyway this was much longer than I intended, but Bo has always captivated me, even from the beginning when I was put off by some of his off-colour jokes but couldn't help but be impressed with his skills in spite of it, and the way he has transformed himself into a truly revolutionary figure in comedy has been fascinating to watch.

Some of his earlier stuff I'd recommend though is "Lower your Expectations," "Repeat Stuff," "Country Song," "Left Brain, Right Brain," "We Think we Know you," "From God's Perspective," "Rant," and "Art is Dead." There's so so many other great ones out there too but those are a good start.

Ive listened to this song well over a hundred time and it literally makes me cry every time. I truly believe that it’s the greatest work of art of this decade. Idk if you noticed or if someone else in the comments has pointed it out but he is the one who is adjusting his auto tune the whole time and making his voice echo. An absolute masterclass from Bo Burnham I could easily write a whole essay on just this performance alone.

Bo's a legitimate genius, and if you're looking for a sort-of sequel to this amazing song, check out "All Eyes on Me" which came out five years after this, while Bo was stuck at home (and unable to perform for crowds) during the 2020 pandemic.
EDIT: for that matter, his entire pandemic special "Inside" is a must-watch - it ping-pongs around between comedy and existential heartbreak in a very similar way to this performance, so I think you'd find it very funny, fascinating, and moving. Would love to see your reactions to it!

I just found this reaction video and just THANK YOU! This is the what every reaction to this segment should be. I cry every single time I watch it, knowing what he was going through while performing it. The way he ended it with not a thank you or generic sign off, but "I hope you're happy" despite being in the middle of his own breakdown is so heartbreaking. The was the last time he was on stage. If you haven't watched his special "Inside" definitely check it out!! He's a lyrical and musical genius, but also just so real too.

This was my first time watching your channel. Such a thoughtful reaction! I discovered Bo through his latest Netflix special, Inside, which he made completely by himself in his 1-room guest house during COVID. It's a masterpiece! It even won him several Emmys and a Grammy.
I've fallen hard down the Bo rabbit hole ever since! Almost all the videos on my channel are analyses of his stuff (including this song), often focused on the cinematography. Bo is a master at staging, lighting, and cinematography (he also wrote and directed the film Eighth Grade). My favorite part of this one is when he essentially says, "you're not really here to hear about my problems; you are here to be entertained, so I'll just shut up and get back to the comedy." Then he stands up and goes back to the funny part of the song about the burrito, meanwhile he's backlit so we can't even see his face, just his silhouette, as if to say, "You don't care about the real me, just the shadow of me that is my stage persona." It gives me goosebumps every time, too!
Really hope you decide to check out more of his stuff. It's not all this serious, but many of his songs have elements of both humor and introspection/social commentary, etc. He also did some pretty fire raps back in the day that you should check out! And his first Netflix special, "what" is on TH-cam in its entirety of you ever want to react to the whole thing in chunks.
(I will warn you, though, that I often have trouble getting his videos past copyright. The audio is always fine because Bo allows it to be used on TH-cam, but Netflix is less forgiving with the video).

I'm definitely subscribing, and gonna browse your channel due to how well you were able to pick up on the nuances of the video.
P.S. While the silly problems in the beginning of his song were just made to be relatable problems. Everything else in his performance, from the voice pitches, to the lighting were intentionally used to portray a message. Like when the lighting was on his back to black him out (after he said he should just shut up and do his job), which signified anyone could be singing the same lyrics to entertain them.

@nickforellreacts Anything from Bo Burnham's 2 Netflix specials, "Inside" or "Inside: Outtakes" are a good pick (he got an emmy for All Eyes On Me). Bothe of which he filmed, directed, etc. by himself during Covid lockdown. His older stuff is great too, but you will likely take the most interest in his "Left Brain, Eight Brain" do to the narrative on the psychy in it. I'm sure people watching will suggest other vids to help guide you down the Bo experience.
Tim Minchin, you will get a lot of suggestions helping you guide your trip through his stuff as well. A great place to start would probably be "Thank you God" with the Australian orchestra, or "Lullaby" which is about a parent's mental state when taking care of a newborn.
Whatever you decide to watch, I'm looking forward to. These are just some suggestions that you might like from a psych nurse perspective.

I love how he uses the burrito as an allegory for fame, and how he wouldn’t have gotten so big (like the burrito) if somebody would have warned him about how messy it would be. Listen to this knowing about his anxiety issues and you can see lots of layers. He starts with small little problems, let’s you in on his actual inner turmoil, and then goes back to his clown-like facade to show that he’s smiling through his pain and performing through it all.
The children laughing in your background actually lean well into the theme of this song. We’re listening to his pain while the world around keeps finding joy when he can’t.

Great reaction once again, Bo is IMHO is on a genius level at least in my eyes, from my understanding, and take this with a grain of salt because some of it comes from Bo himself and some from other comments and videos I've seen. but after this act "Make Happy" Bo took off from performing for 5 years, during that time, he spent a large portain of the time Producing a movie "Eight Grade" which is excellent and got good reviews, But Bo was experiencing Panic Attacks on stage and after "Make Happy" they just became to much. I have been following and a big fan of Bo for many years and I'm pretty sure I've seen everything he's even done in the last 14-15 years or so.
If your interested in going down the Bo rabbit hole, it will keep you busy for soe time, their are so many great performances I hate to even name one, but their are "Welcome to the Internet" Left Brain Right Brain" " In Gods Perspective" "Words, words, words" some of his earlier work can trigger some people, but its all good. you won't be disappointed I can't seem to guarantee much of anything else, but I can guarantee this.
EDIT: It;s been told by many that Bo was having a panic attack as he was doing this show, how true it is I don't know but based on what you just witnessed, it's a good possibility there is another part to this not shown in this video but back stage, he plays a piano that might clue you in if you can find it. it too was good

FYI -- Bo Burnham is the NF of Comedy lol -- By this I mean, the more you learn of his story and his earlier content, the more things make sense later. There's no "journey", but I PROMISE if you learn about young Bo you'll understand older Bo 1000% more -- Bo was the youngest kid every to sign with Comedy Central -- He was literally making goofy videos in his room in high school and went "viral" -- So for those that have been with Bo from the start we got to watch him grow as a kid up to his newest special "Inside" -- BUT , please watch some older stuff first. You'll appreciate Inside so much more man -- Bo was very outspoken with his struggles with fame and celebrity in general. Wait until you see, "Art is Dead".
This video is the last thing he did before walking away for 5 years. He's done interviews about this, where he talks about this in depth. When he is saying "Can't handle this right now" this was literal, in that moment, he couldn't handle it, as he had been battling panic attacks and ect, even while on stage. When he drops the mic at the end and says "I hope your happy" he was actually telling the audience like, "I hope you fu**ing happy" in a half resentful way. When he's looking out at the crowd and you can't see everyone's face that was done intentionally, as the faceless crowd has almost grown to idolize him as he has a pretty cult following, but that just adds to all the things that caused him to go through his situation. "All Eyes On Me" is the sequal to this performance btw, and he talks about a lot of this in that. So it's good you watched this first, because All Eyes on Me literally helped him win an Emmy which was on "Inside" -- Anyways, I could type a book, and I'm almost there, so I'll stop now.

@@nickforell1 "Left Brain Right Brain" - Bo's internal struggles - "Art Is Dead" - His struggles with fame and how he feels about fame - "We Think We Know You" -- His most impactful video ever.
From Gods Perspective is essentially a mandatory reaction video too though -- But again, just watch a small handful of his earlier stuff before hitting Inside IMO. My only real suggestion is to get a sense of who Bo is before getting to All Eyes On Me. Everyone likes to recommend that one, but you only get to learn who Bo is once lol -- I promise the more you know about him, which you obviously picked up on a ton just with this reaction. A handful of songs and you'll figure it out.
All Eyes On Me -- The sequal to this one, but that's from his newest but it gives you perspective of where he's at now. I don't think you need to START with this one when you get to "Inside" but as long as you understand the progression -- when you understand my comment of , "Bo hates being famous hates his fans for making him famous, but was born to do this" -- Once that makes sense then you'll get it lol
Last thing, and you may not have to react to this -- at the end of this special he walks off stage and goes to a "location" I'll call it, to not ruin surprises -- and does a song called "Are You Happy" which he ends the special on. It's like 2 minutes, but try to at least watch this yourself even without reacting before getting to INSIDE.

The best description of this song/rant I've seen is that it's the greatest reversal on an audience ever. Taking the apparent silliness of the Pringles can thing and the burrito and flipping the script to reveal that they're both analogies of the very real problems he deals with in his life, AND keeping the audience entertained throughout is such an impressive performance.
As far as I'm aware, Bo has always had every moment of every show fully planned out as much as possible, which was probably one of his ways of handling his on stage anxiety attacks. But at the same time, that last scream definitely felt like a little bit extra came out with it.

So this is an edited version of my original comment which only consisted of one sentence.
Like I seen in the comments already,
someone who has dealt with depression a ridiculous amount, that hits different.
Bo is a hero to us, I hope he feels worth and gets in a better place.
Just like NF, that’s why I was drawn to both of them,
Nate has found a better place after 30 years,
I hope Bo has lately too :/
I know Bo has a newish Netflix special out but I hope he’s doing much better now days

You are literally my favourite person to watch react to things and bo is my fave comedian probably ever bc of the depth he goes into and how incredibly smart he is so the fact that you catch like all the underlying meanings and everything and ur so genuine about it- I love it! You appreciate him as much as the rest of us 😂😂👏👏

I’ve literally only just watched two of your Bo Burnham reactions and already love your reactions and take on especially this video. I remember when this special came out I was new to Bo and was completely blown away, like wth he was so funny and silly and then this came right out of left field and stuck with me. Thank you for reacting to this. Also you remind me of Mac from It’s Always Sunny. Just had to say that

great reaction! you should watch "are you happy?", the closing song for this special (a studio recorded one)
that really closes the circle (note how this special's title is "make happy", the last words he says on stage are "I hope you're happy" and the last song is called "are you happy")

Thx for giving me a new reaction channel 🙏 Bo is so good! He's said before that what he does on stage is an act but I don't think it's all of it, this is too real. He almost writes the simplest songs but they're deep & his understanding of music can make you feel what he wants you to feel. I wonder if he's such a genius that he doesn't need to try & that that makes him feel like he doesn't "deserve" his accolades? Idk, I really look forward to seeing you discover more. Literally anything from the "Inside" special would be great. Thanks again!

It had been a while since I listened to Bo. Now I know why! It is his intensity and that realness he gets you with. It twists deep inside, in so many ways I wouldn't have been bright enough to figure it out without reading other's comments. Since it had been awhile, I was, once again, completely taken off guard! I felt like I was going along on that Disney Log ride where everything is just calm, fine and dandy....then, wham! He did it to me again.....took me by complete surprise [having 'ADD' helps with that, lol].

I remember seeing this show live (A close friend took me for my birthday surprise) and I had a great time, but I remember how he looked on stage and felt like something was off and couldn't quit crying. My friend thought I was just THAT happy to be pushed to tears, until after the show when we were at the car ready to leave... I had a panic-attack because something felt off to me and by that point it had been three months since my last panic-attack so it hit so much harder than ones I usually had that used to happen weekly or daily. My friend realized what was happening and grabbed their headset from their bag, plugged it into their phone and had me listen to music until I calmed down a bit. It helped that it was chilly that night, so I just pretty much almost ripped my hoodie off. I don't remember much of anything after I had the headset on, but my friend claimed that I kept saying "Not alright" in various tones from mumbled to "heartbreaking cracking vocals" when trying to speak (Their description of it). That night traumatized them more than me I think, because I tend to not remember pieces since my brain just wants to suppress it all. It wasn't until his more latest show that I heard what happened days later at his last show for Make Happy and it began coming back to me.
My friend to this day believes that Bo's anxiety affected me since we had close seats to the stage and I must have worked myself up since I recognized the signs from myself and someone else I know who has daily panic-attacks still to this day. Since then I've gained some ground on things and haven't had an episode in five months, but it's hard for me to listen to the end of this song still.

I think he did an incredible job of describing what many of us feel as we walk through life struggling to make others happy while failing at being happy themselves. He was having a panic attack during this song, it was said by him that he went backstage and cried for a long time.

The most impactful part is the double-entendre at the end right before the mic drop. The "I hope you're happy." that is both "I hope I did my job and made you happy tonight" and "I hope you're happy with what you've done to my mental health." at the same time. It was.. heavy.

Bo is really a once in a generation kind of talent but he’s been struggling so much, snd struggling with even feeling guilty about feeling depressed and so on.. Great reaction to one of my all time favorite performances. There’s almost always metaphors and layers in his writing too. Other than the part where he changes it up, my next favorite part was when he said "I should probably just shut up and do my job so here I go." and then immediately goes back to the Chipotle stuff... but this time, it is different because now we know that it is just a mask. We are now in Bo's state of mind telling jokes... and it doesnt feel as funny as it did the first time.

I just saw this for the 1st time last week and then found your reaction today. Being an empath ( which I believe you’ve stated you are as well I can see it) & me personally having anxiety & depression that last scream had me in tears as well. It definitely floored me a bit & I felt so bad for him, seeing that he’s struggling so much & the crowd is doing exactly what he’s breaking down about. This one was heavy and I’m glad your reaction was the first I saw.
